Renom a FPC

Hi Cart:

The apples photo is going to fail in a few minutes. It was 8-0 at one point, then went 11-5 for a few days, still passing and a couple hours before closing went 11-6. I just made a version where I darkened the background and lightened the apples, and took out the small "u" to the right of the hook/sausage. The sausage seems essentially unremoveable because PS and LR can't determine what should be behind it on the blackboard. I think we can renom a failed nom. Is that correct? Is there a minimum time frame for doing so? If a renom is done what is ettiquete for notifying or not notifying prior voters? Thank you. PumpkinSky talk 03:53, 21 November 2017 (UTC)

@PumpkinSky: I generally stay away from renominations since they are very seldom successful. Doing one too soon after the first nom can be perceived as "nagging". There is no form or rules for renominations but I'd say that letting people rest a bit between noms increase the chance of success. If you are bent on renominate it, I'd say wait at least 4-5 months. A year's wait is probably better since that can get you some new sets of eyes. Voters at FPC come and go and opinions/consensus change. You don't have to notify any previous voters, a renom is a fresh start. --cart-Talk 09:47, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
Sounds good. I'll wait at least 4 months. It's a shame it came to within a few hours of making. I've seen this happen to others. Thanks for the info PumpkinSky talk 11:20, 21 November 2017 (UTC).

Photoshop and blown skies

Hi Cart.

I have an image I'm having trouble with. I had -EV on it but apparently not enough. If I move the temp slider to the right to have a proper looking line of trees the sky is blown. If I move it to the left to have blue skies, the tree branches get burn spots. I've tried all I know in LR and a some stuff in PS I found via google but nothing gets both the trees and the skies looking properly. Is there something you know of in PS that has worked for you in this situation? Thank you and hope you are doing well. PumpkinSky talk 19:44, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

What you are looking for are the LR Graduated Radial and Filters and for the finish a bit of Adjustment Brush. --cart-Talk 20:30, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
That seems to be working. I'll need more time to finish it. THANKS! PumpkinSky talk 20:54, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Thanks

Not too sure how the rollback/revert happened but thanks for reverting and assuming good faith, very much appreciated. :) Bidgee (talk) 11:01, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Same place as apples photo

Hi Cart. This photo was just uploaded, but I can't get rid of the problem in the trees, so I'm not putting at QIC. It was taken at the same place as the apples photo, where you said you like classic Americana stuff, the photo that failed FPC by one vote: File:Cindy's Produce Indian Corn LR.jpg.

Farmhouse photo

Hi Cart. Thanks for your comments on this. I'm beginning to think it'd be easier to reshoot this. I am very pleased with the sharp focus this one has, but as noted it has a few other issues. It's not a long drive. I can do a closeups, but for the crazy angles you mentioned, what did you have in mind? I think moving to the left would make that bush too prominent. Moving to the right would be better plus it may not have the car in it, depending on how it was shot. Thank you. PumpkinSky talk 17:16, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

PSky: The "crazy angles" are the ones you get without really thinking of it. The unexpected ones that occur when you are just playing around. :) If I visited such a house, I would probably take some 200-300 photos. I would act as if I was trying to "document" every aspect of it or like I was "scanning" it for a 3D model. Move around the place, shoot from different levels all around the house, place the camera close to the steps in front, use the bench as foreground, try to shoot a window through another window, shoot the upper details of the support pillars on the porch, lie on the porch and shoot up into the roof over it, locate a spider-web-infested corner and do a close-up, try to find something that shows just how abandoned it is, shoot just the two "arches" on the right side of the porch with the bench and the bush invading, the peeling paint and some flapping piece of wood on the door, and so on. I think you get the idea. ;) If you have time when you are done, sit down and look through the photos in the camera. Does anything pop out? Should you try to re-shoot it while you are already there? Later when you get home you will probably see things you never though would be any special while you were there.
This is a little like the way I went about documenting this little cottage along my favorite hiking trail here in Lysekil. This view was the obvious one I thought would be nice to represent the cottage, but it turned out that this one was a far better photo and I had got it just by circling the cottage and clicking. Same with the area behind the cottage. This one is the informative but this one is the better photo. Also the pond behind the cottage. This one is the obvious start, but this one is a better and more interesting photo.
Try to just play around. And bring a large memory card and some lunch with you. Let go! :) --cart-Talk 19:21, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
AH. Be more spontaneous, creative, and innovative. I think that'll be harder for me than you ;-) Thanks for the detailed response! PumpkinSky talk 19:52, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
What is it they say about a hundred monkeys x number of years and Shakespeare... If you circle the house and click 300 pics something is bound to happen. Seriously, you are good at spotting a nice photo, just look at what you encouraged Tournasol7 to do today. :) If you take many photos a bit randomly, I think you will surprise yourself and when you go through the bunch you will be able to spot the good ones. --cart-Talk 19:59, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
The deed is done. I'm SO GLAD I always take an extra battery! The first was only slightly used when I started today and I used up about 1/3 of the power on the second battery. I took 141 photos. The farm owner (he lives in a house beside this one) was very nice and said I could take all the photos I wanted of the outside, but not to go inside the old house. So I respected that and spent 2.5 hours taking photos. It was midafternoon when I got there and you can tell from the sunlight. Then came Gold Hour and then Blue Hour and I was getting really cold! The house faces west (getting direct afternoon sun) so I started in the back, then the sides, then the front. At this time it was close to Gold Hour starting so I concentrated on the front from then on and also took a few pics of the sunset. I wrapped up taking Gold/Blue Time photos of the more interesting things. I didn't move anything as it wasn't my property, just took photos. There was half a float, the kind used to hold up fish nets on the front bench. It had the name "Kelvin A. Lewis" on it, so I'm making a Commons category for all the ones I end up uploading and calling it "Kelvin A. Lewis Farmstead". In a few days, when I'm done processing and uploading I'll let you know in case you want to look at the photos. Thanks again for the tips. I did try your suggestions and to be more creative and to use differnt angles. We'll see how things went soon. PumpkinSky talk 23:17, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

@PumpkinSky: Very nice and refreshing to see! :) With this series you have certainly taken a big step forward wrt to the artistic quality in your photos. A documentary series as this is also really interesting to go through and much more valuable to the wiki-project than a single FP. I often enjoy doing such "360 documentation" much more than trying to get one perfect photo. Doing such, you can set your mind free and just enjoy photographing and not worry too much about all the comments you are bound to get at FPC. The total ambiance of the series really great! Seeing that you now can control the light, get your pics in focus and find interesting subjects, I think it's time that you start paying attention to the borders and framing of your photos. You are still a bit too fond of cutting things at the borders of the pic since you are too focused on main subject. This would have been great if you had shifted the camera a bit and included both buckets. Same here, light colors, lines are very nice but the tree to the left is cut, as is the jar in this. It may sound picky, but these photos have embryos of being excellent except for those small details. I like this one, it could do with a bit more light, contrast and a bit of a crop at the top otherwise nice compo. A fixed and cropped (16:9) verison of this, maybe without the car, would be really nice. It has a bit of Bodie to it. A bit of "level shifting" would also have been better in some photos. In the photos of the abandoned pickup, you have the treeline at the horizon interfering with the top of the truck. It would have been much better if you had knelt down a bit and got the "skeleton" of the top against the clear sky. In the FPC of those, you have a whole tree in the windshield when a small step to the left would have left the top clear between the two trees.

Ok, a lot to take in and it may sound like I'm just picking on your great series, but I know you want me to be honest and help you move forward. A great step has been taken, just mind the borders and what you get in the background. ;) --cart-Talk 09:57, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

Thank you very much for the comments and suggestions! I actually did do "level shifting" when I did the pics of the whole front of the house. I haven't gotten to them yet. I've only processed about 25% of the photos so far. Of the suggestions you make that are fixable in LR, I'll do that first before I process more of these images. Closing FPC

Hi Cart.

I hope you are well and the weather isn't too bad there. We just had a blizzard. Lots of snow, at least by standards of where I live, maybe not so much for where you live.

Someone just closed their own FPC. I know this is frowned upon but I looked at the rules and they say "any experienced user" can close an FPC. Any thoughts? PumpkinSky talk 13:50, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

@PumpkinSky: It is allowed even if it is not a common, most users think it is simply good manners not to close thier own noms. But closings are always monitored by other users so while it may be frowned upon by some, it is not forbidden. Also 'pinging' @Basile Morin: since it is considered good manners to include the person you are talking about. ;) --cart-Talk 14:07, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
@Basile Morin: and Cart, the reason I closed the farm house was it was "not featured". Maybe I'm strange, actually I am, but to me where's the conflict when it's "not featured"? There's no sense of possible impropriety in it because you're gaining anyhing from it. For me, I would never close one of my own "featured" ones. I might ask someone to go look at it and close it, but I'd never close my own "featured" myself. People will of course have different opinions on this. Just my two cents. PumpkinSky talk 14:58, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
  • @Basile Morin: @PumpkinSky: , Heaven knows that Wiki-etiquette on this site is not easy to know or follow, and toes and egos will be trampled upon whatever you do!! Yes, it is true that closing a not-featured is very seldom frowned upon (unlike featured), they are like removing and closing your own withdrawn noms. Sort of like tidying up after yourself.
When I was new here at FPC, I got a comment that the site lacked a strong Alpha Male to lead and keep things in order here. I replied that there is no shortage of Alpha Males but a serious lack of female kindergarten teachers... :) --cart-Talk 15:06, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
as usual, Cart states it well. I agree with her, as usual. We need more Cart-ish folks at FPC and QIC! PumpkinSky talk 15:11, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
̈Well noted, thanks. Then I've just learnt something new today ː-) Good -- Basile Morin (talk) 15:17, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
̈*@Basile Morin: BTW, Basile, there's an FP closing later today, UTC time, that you can practice closing with. It's a red flower, wink wink. ;-) ;-) OH, @Basile Morin: and you don't have to wait for the bot to put the silver tab on the FPC, you can close as soon as the red date notice of closing appears, which means you can go close the one of the log house in the snow right now if you want. PumpkinSky talk 15:18, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Delist and replace

Do you know how to do that delist and replace at the bottom of FPC? The official instructions seem lacking. PumpkinSky talk 01:15, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

There is a manual at Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished#Closing a delisting request. --cart-Talk 06:30, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
That only covers delisting. What promotes the new photo? The bot says the alternative parameter is needed but it doesn't say if that delists the old photo or promotes the new photo. PumpkinSky talk 12:01, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
You manually transfer all the old FP-related "honors" to the new photo since that in essence replaces the old photo. Look at some earlier Delist/Replace examples such as this and check out how that was handled. Easiest way to do that is to look in the "History" of each file. When in doubt, always look at previous cases. --cart-Talk 12:09, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
So you have to both delist and replace manually. OK, I'll give it a try. PumpkinSky talk 12:17, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
You do that. Sorry, it's not every day that I'm in a chatty teacher-mode. Some days, I like to just putter about with my own photos like any lazy Commoner. --cart-Talk 12:20, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
That's ok. Thanks for the tips. PumpkinSky talk 12:33, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
I think I got it all. The only glitches are that the templates that go on the nominator's talk page wants andthe assessment tag on the file page want to go to the file name that normally gets used not the /replace subpage that D&R noms use, so I made manual notes about it. I also updated the instruction page that both parts need to be done manually. PumpkinSky talk 13:30, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

Kommentar

--cart-Talk 19:52, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Would you be able to nominate this file for "Valued Images"? I can't seem to find the right place for it. It would be appreciated. Adamdaley 02:47, 3 March 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamdaley (talk • contribs) 02:47, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

@Adamdaley: Hello, I'm sorry but I can't help you with this. If I nominate this photo for Valued Images, I become reasonable for the nomination and I can't do that since I know nothing about the subject. There is unfortunately no way I can make the nomination "for you" or "in your name". There are also some problems with the file/photo. You have uploaded two photos on the same file that should have been uploaded in two different places. There is a request tag for splitting the file on the page. Until that has been resolved, the photo can't be nominated for VI since there could be some dispute over which photo is the correct version. Then there is also the description on the page. It is not written in a neutral and encyclopedic way. Writing things like "Captivated by its noble teachings, Rajah Humabon was converted to Christianity" is called "biased" since there might be people who do not regard Christianity as "noble teachings". You can read about how to write descriptions in a neutral and encyclopedic way here: Wikipedia:Neutral point of view. All the best, --cart-Talk 09:42, 3 March 2018 (UTC)
  • That "biased" comment was on the original plaque. So I took at picture and added it to the description of the above image. --Adamdaley 00:56, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
@Adamdaley: Then you should mention that in the descroiption, something like: "On a plaque by the site it is written: ..." If you don't explain that the text is a quote, it will be misinterpreted as your own point of view. You have to be very clear and precise about things when working with encyclopedic stuff. --cart-Talk 08:38, 4 March 2018 (UTC)
Where is the page to submit a file for "Valued Images"? --Adamdaley 06:35, 6 March 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamdaley (talk • contribs) 06:35, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
@Adamdaley: Go to Commons:Valued image candidates. --cart-Talk 09:00, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
Could you help me nominate the following image for a Valued Image? File:Liberty Service Station, Birmingham Gardens.jpg since it has been declined at QI. --Adamdaley

@Adamdaley: I'm sorry, but once again no. I can't nominate something I can't support myself. In this case the file name and the description are wrong. This in not a photo of "Liberty Service Station" but of a sign they are displaying. The sign just happens to be located at that service station. If anything, it should be nominated as an example of such particular signs and I have not enough knowledge about such signs to judge if this is the best way of showing them. There is also a logo on the sign and in some cases, publishing logos here might be a copyright violation and the photo may me nominated for deletion. Again I must decline. --cart-Talk 23:04, 9 March 2018 (UTC)

It's also a petrol station and service station. What do you want me to call it? Rabbit? Adamdaley
At least show me how to nominate it for VI. That's all I meant. Adamdaley

@Adamdaley: Yes, there is unfortunately a large portion in the middle of the sky that is blown. --cart-Talk 09:54, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Could you take a look at a new updated files with File:Railway Goods Shed, Wallsend.jpg and File:Church sandgate cemetery nsw australia.jpg. --Adamdaley

Panorama

Hi, thanks for your panorama of Tasman Lake. Can you halp me to make panorama with others photos? It is possible to merge photos just with Lightroom? Have a nice evening! Tournasol7 (talk) 22:54, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

@Tournasol7: Wow... That's a strange way of thanking me if the first thing you think of is giving me more work...
I don't do edits like this on other users' photos on request. I do it if I feel like it, if I have the time, if I find the subject interesting enough or for some other reason. The idea is to show what can be done with photos, to give the user new ideas and perhaps inspire them to want to improve their own skill with taking and editing photos, not just take over their workload.
And no, as far as I know, you can't make panoramas with Lightroom, for that you need Photoshop or some other program. --cart-Talk 08:07, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
So I thought I couldn't do it in Lightroom, and I only have this program. Once I took some pictures of a castle for the panorama and tried to merge them (note) ...in Paint. It was already jammed by the second photo.
At the same time I would like to apologize for my question. I shouldn't thank you in this way... Sorry. Tournasol7 (talk) 13:48, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Not a hoverfly

Hello Cart Most think the hoverflies they see are bees. You have turned this, expecting a hoverfly when you saw a tiny bee. Most probably a species of Hylaeus. Must send a few photos to QI. Still watching and learning. Warm regards Robert Notafly (talk) 19:37, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Robert! How nice to hear from you again, I'm so glad you dropped by my talk page. And thank you for for taking time and trying to identify the little flying fellow, I appreciate it very much. :-) My knowledge of these creatures is unfortunately very limited. I had no idea bees can be so small. It certainly behave in a way that made me think of a hoverfly. Did you see both the photos it was in? (1) and 2). Would it be correct if I renamed those two files "Big red tulips with small bee" and changed the category to Category:Hylaeus?
I'm finally getting to the bottom of my very large backlog of photos from last year, only a hundred or so left. All the best, CJ -- Cart (talk) 20:05, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

I did.Bee is certain but let me check that it is a Hylaeus for the category (where I write cf it means compare with and I need help). Tiny isn't it? and looks the more so against the huge flower. I think you missed my praise of Harebells by a road Delightful. R Notafly (talk) 20:21, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Thank you, there is no hurry, I just like to get the file descriptions as accurate as possible. And learn something in the process. Also thanks for the kind words about the harebell, yes I somehow missed that. I thought the curve of that stem was so exquisite, that's why I photographed it. They are so fragile and each bell bloom such a short time, after that half of the bells on the stems are withered. You have to capture them at the right time. -- Cart (talk) 21:02, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

2 active nominations

So, should i remove the third image from the candidates page? --Satdeep Gill (talk) 18:08, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

I can archive it for you now that you've seen the message, to make it right. You can renominate it later. just remember to make that nomination "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:A Punjabi turbaned man - 1.jpg/2" then. :) -- Cart (talk) 18:19, 14 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. Also, can i withdraw 2 existing nominations and then nominate 2 new images? Is that considered right? --Satdeep Gill (talk) 02:32, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
@Satdeep Gill: Yes, that is correct. After you have put the "withdraw" on your nom, you can nominate another and in time someone will come along and archive your withdrawn nomination. Just don't be too quick about withdrawing, some users are quick and rude with their votes while others like to think about the photo a while. Far from all users visit the page every day and it might take some time for them to see it. Also constant withdrawing creates work for those who vote and maintain the page. ---- Cart (talk) 08:03, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Alright! That helps a lot. I will keep all these things in mind. Thanks a lot. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 08:23, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Waterfalls

Hi Cart,

some days ago you put a comment on my waterfall picture at FPC and you said in this series, there were some more possible FP candidates. Which of them do you like most?

BTW, when I was talking at FPC about a series of cascades, I wasn't referring to an image series but literally to a series of cascades, I mean it's not only one waterfall but there are several steps of waterfalls. Each one is nicer than the other.

Best regards,

--Basotxerri (talk) 20:23, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi there Basotxerri! Sorry that I read the text in a sloppy way and misunderstood you, but it doesn't matter, the series is great. :) One of my favorites would need some cropping though to make it perfect, but that is up to you. I'll just leave a note on the file. The best one IMO is File:Andoin - Cascadas de la Tobería -BT- 08.jpg, the light and the levels in it are stunning. After that it is File:Andoin - Cascadas de la Tobería -BT- 11.jpg, it might be a bit reminiscent of the first one though. I also like File:Berganzo - Ruta del Agua - Cascada de las Herrerías -BT- 06.jpg a lot, it too could do with some cropping at the bottom. Cheers, --Cart (talk) 20:41, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
Hello again, strangely I wouldn't have choose neither of them. I'll think about it. I was thinking more about a detail shot in order to differentiate it from the first nomination and what I like about the detail shots is that you really can see the structures of wood, rock and moss covered by the creamy water flow. What do you think about File:Andoin - Cascadas de la Tobería -BT- 11.jpg? What I don't like about the Ruta del Agua image is that I find the twigs on the top quite disturbing. What I've said, I'll think about it. Thanks for the answer! --Basotxerri (talk) 08:18, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
@Basotxerri: But that one was the second photo I was talking about. Or am I missing something? The pattern in it might be a bit too much like the first nom though. In File:Andoin - Cascadas de la Tobería -BT- 08.jpg you get some very pleasant horizontal lines instead of the verticals in the first nom. I see that you cropped some of the bottom, thanks, could be a bit more to get it perfectly balanced though but it will do. --Cart (talk) 09:31, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Sorry cart, I meant File:Andoin - Cascadas de la Tobería -BT- 13.jpg instead of the 11... --Basotxerri (talk) 11:41, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
@Basotxerri: Ah, that explains things. ;) That one is not doing very much for me, I'm sorry to say. It looks a bit contorted and unbalanced in some strange way. Not to mention that stick at the top, like someone is taking a piss in the stream. Apologies, but there is no polite way of describing it. Sorry. --Cart (talk) 11:49, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
Don't worry, that's OK. I appreciate your opinion, that's why I ask ;-) I'll no. 08... --Basotxerri (talk) 11:56, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
