big iron something

A long way up the mountain...

hi, i found you pics on searching for pipelines. This iron thing is in my opnion a destroyed aircraft turbine and has nothing to do with drilling or kind of that. So the question is, why the hell is this turbine lieing in forrest and no one cares? --92.229.212.95 18:24, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I know nothing about engines, so I guess you may be right... There may indeed be a story about it - it's half way up the south slope of Grouse Mountain, on an about 45-degree trail that goes from North Vancouver to the skiing area on top. (There is also a gondola ride to the top, but that comes from the west, and a service road, coming in a zigzag from the east). Certainly not a place for an aircraft of any kind (especially one big enough to need an engine this size) to be stationed. It's hard to imagine an engine surviving in a (more or less) one piece after an aircraft's collision with the mountain either. It seems to me that these days, it would be next to impossible to either bring something that big to that spot or to get it out of there, due to the steep terrain and big trees. I imagine there was some kind of ropeway there long ago - maybe for logging purposes, or in connection with the mountain top construction, and that could have been used to haul up things like this. Still, "why", remains a question. Could people have used an old aircraft engine to blow snow away, perhaps? Vmenkov (talk) 00:54, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
I was exactly thinking the same. Maybe this is the story [1]. But i can't imagine that this turbine wasn't ever rescued or something. I put this picture in the German WP where i`m editing normaly when i`m not searching for destroyed turbines :D --92.227.73.216 18:53, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the link! This is a piece of our history that I've never heard about. I've added the info to the en:Grouse Mountain article. The location of the 1954 crash given in the article matches exactly the place where I saw this thing in 2007, so this indeed would explain how it would get there. I share your surprise at the turbine still sitting there as of 2007, nobody having bothering to retrieve it in 53 years, but I imagine that the terrain made that unfeasible (or prohibitively costly). One can sometimes find strange things while hiking in Canadian forests! Vmenkov (talk) 00:20, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Commonist licenses

Dear Vmenkov,

As you might know Wikimedia is currently migrating from the GFDL to cc-by-sa-3.0. Wikimedia Commons is also migrating and we're down to less than 8000 files (started with about 1,8M files) . Unfortunatly this number keeps growing because Commonist contains outdated license templates. You appear to be running Commonist, could you please change the following lines in your license.txt?

{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}} should be changed to {{Self|GFDL|Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}
{{self2|GFDL|cc-by-2.5}} should be changed to {{self|GFDL|cc-by-3.0}}
{{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} should be changed to {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}

Can I also fix the images you have already uploaded by adding {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}?

Thank you very much, Multichill (talk) 12:50, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

OK, I have changed the licenses.txt file on my host, so it should take effect for future uploads. I also authorize you (or your bots) to change the licensing information in my already-uploaded files as you find it desirable. Vmenkov (talk) 01:35, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Great! I changed your recent uploads to {{Self|GFDL|Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}. Multichill (talk) 11:09, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

about Category:Linxia

I think Linxia != Linxia City != Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture ,I will move "Linxia City" to "Linxia","Linxia" may include "Category:Maps of Linxia" "Category:Counties of Linxia(may be different USA)" "History of Linxia" and so on."Linxia City" only belongs "Cities in Linxia".See Category:Cities in Gansu,These category according to PRC's admin(see [2]Emcc83 (talk) 08:24, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Tree photos - request

Hi Vmenkov - just been looking through your gallery, found some useful tree pics. If on your future travels you are able to get more, they would be much appreciated! Photos of conifers (both whole trees, and close-ups of foliage and cones) in the mountains of eastern Asia (like your photos from Shennongjia) would be particularly valuable, as Commons gets few photos from that region. If you can't identify them yourself, no problem, drop me a note and I'll do my best. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 15:46, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

MPF, thanks for your help with identifying tree and other species! I do like to take pictures of interesting-looking plants, but I usually have no idea how they are called, unless the helpful park managers have nailed an identifying tag to the tree. I have seen your edits on my watchlist, and used them to enhance the gallery in one article. I even thought of writing you a "thank you" note, but you have done that ahead of me :-)
I believe that pretty much all nature pictures I have made in China have been uploaded to Wiki Commons quite a while ago. From what I've seen on my watchlist, it seems that you may have seen most of them. However, I do categorize all my photos geographically (down to the county level, or at least the prefecture level), so if you want to review the full list, you can take a look at the following geographical categories (and their subcategories):
If I post more plant pictures that I think you could help with identification, I will let you know. Maybe I'll create a special temp category for them, to make a review by you - or other experts - easier. -- Vmenkov (talk) 03:40, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! - MPF (talk) 18:20, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the pictures! However, I suspect that the boat pictured in this photo is not the famous ca. 1272 vessel specifically known as the en:Quanzhou ship, but some other boat from the collection of the museum. The preserved section of the 1272 ship is described as being "24.02 m long and 9.15 m wide, and 2 m deep", while the boat pictured in the photo seems to be rather smaller. -- Vmenkov (talk) 00:14, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Spongeflies

Hi I thought you like to know I identified your mysterious cocoons like the one on the right. These are cocoons of so-called spongeflies (Sisyridae). Their larvae live underwater and crawl on land tot pupate. They are the only insects that make hairnet-cocoons like these. Greetings -B kimmel (talk) 15:14, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks! I certainly never knew about an insect like that... You're most welcome to correct the captions of the images (or at least that one of the images) to best describe the the structure depicted. -- Vmenkov (talk) 01:03, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
