First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Bob Bobster on Flickr[edit]

Hi Verne Equinox! Bob Bobster (bobster855) on Flickr is known to upload files created by others, marking them with licenses that he has no legal right to release them under, and failing to credit the actual authors. The account is therefore listed as an unreliable source at Commons:Questionable Flickr images.

I have initiated a review of all files taken from this Flickr user that I could find. Since you uploaded one or more of those files to Commons, you may wish to comment at Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Bob Bobster on Flickr. Shared bikeways in Australia[edit]

Hi - thanks for sorting these images. However, when you create a new subcategory, please make sure it is in all appropriate parent categories as well (i.e. "Shared bikeways in Australia" needed to be a subcategory of not only "Shared bikeways by country", but also "Bikeways of Australia"). Otherwise, you break the sorting for all the files you re-categorised. In short - if a new category doesn't have at least two parent cats, something is likey to be wrong ;-) Just a hint, as I said - thanks for your work and happy editing! Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open![edit]

Dear Verne Equinox,

Wiki Loves Africa 2020[edit]

Dear Verne Equinox

In the past, you contributed to the Wiki Loves Africa competition. This February, you have another opportunity to create beautiful photographs on the theme of "transportation" that could change how the world understands people and culture in your part of Africa. As with previous years, there are also many exciting cash prizes.

Wiki Loves Africa is an annual public contest where people across Africa can contribute media (photographs, video and audio) about their environment to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Images from the competition have helped millions learn more about Africa and see Africa more clearly from an African perspective. Overall, nearly 5000 people like you have contributed to this photo contest, and contributed 18,000 images about Africa.

When does it take place?

The 2020 competition will start on the 15th of February 2020 and close on 31st March 2020.

What should we contribute?

Pictures ! audios ! videos ! The theme for the 2020 contest is... Africa on the Move ! This theme encompasses a host of approaches and is intentionally open to interpretation. It encourages the submission of visual representations of movement or transportation, whether by path, road, sea air, by self-propelled, animal or mechanical means, or the historical or contemporary structures that have been created to facilitate movement or the transportation of people, goods, or animals.

In addition to the value your photos contribute to understanding and African visibility, there are several prizes on offer. The international prizes are:

  • 1st prize: US$1000
  • 2nd prize: US$800
  • 3rd prize: US$500

Additional categories are:

  • Culturally specific or traditional representations of transport or structures that facilitate transportation : US$500
  • Prize for best quality video: $500


Each winner will also receive a pack of goodies (proposed: a hat "I edit Wikipedia from Africa", a branded battery, stickers). Additional prizes will be available in some countries.

Au cours des années passées, vous avez participé au concours photographique Wiki Loves Africa. Ce mois de février vous avez à nouveau l'opportunité de proposer de fabuleuses illustrations sur le thème du "transport", qui pourraient profondément modifier la façon dont le reste du monde voit l’Afrique et comprend ses habitants et ses coutumes. Bonus, comme lors des années précédentes, il y a plusieurs prix à la clé.

Wiki Loves Africa un concours public annuel où chacun est invité à partager des illustrations via Wikimedia Commons, en rapport avec le thème de l’année, illustrations qui pourront être utilisées sur Wikipédia ou les autres sites de la Wikimedia Foundation.

Les photos collectées par le passé dans le cadre du concours ont aidé des millions de personne à mieux connaitre et comprendre l’Afrique et à la voir selon une perspective africaine. Au cours des dernières années, près de 5000 personnes comme vous ont contribué au concours, un total de 18,000 photos sur l’Afrique.

Quand le concours se déroule t-il?

Le concours 2020 démarre le 15 février 2020 et cloture le 31 mars 2020.

Quelles sont les contenus attendus?

Des photos ! Des enregistrements audio ! Des vidéos ! Le thème du concours 2020 est ... Le transport.

Ce thème englobe de nombreuses approches, il est aussi intentionnellement ouvert à l’interprétation. Le thème Transport ! encourage à proposer des représentations liées au mouvement ou au transport, que ce soit par la route, ou l’air, ou l’eau, de façon auto-propulsée ou avec l’aide de la force animale ou mécanique, ou bien également les structures architecturales historiques ou contemporaines qui sont à l’origine ou ont facilité le mouvement et le transport des êtres humains, des animaux ou des biens.

En plus de la valeur intrinsèque que vos photos apportent pour une meilleure visibilité et compréhension de l’Afrique à travers le monde, il y a de nombreux prix à gagner. Les prix internationaux sont les suivants:

  • 1er prix: US$1000
  • 2ème prix: US$800
  • 3ème prix: US$500

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. bis zum 30. September 2020 findet zum zehnten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments statt. Dabei können Bau-, Boden- und Kulturdenkmale fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich gern wieder ein, dieses Jahr mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Obwohl es den Wettbewerb seit zehn Jahren gibt, sind immer noch viele Motive überall in Deutschland zu fotografieren. Neben beeindruckenden märchenhaften Schlössern, Burgen und Kirchen können auch andere Kulturdenkmale wie Brücken, Industrieruinen, Bauernhöfe oder Parks fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. In den letzten Jahren sind zahlreiche neue Denkmallisten entstanden, die sich über Fotos freuen. Es haben sich auch Kulturdenkmale verändert, sie wurden saniert oder umgestaltet. Diese Entwicklung kann auch gezeigt werden. Für die Suche nach Motiven gibt es bei Wikipedia zahlreiche Listen und Karten. Als Einstieg hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Wiki Loves Earth 2021[edit]

bald ist es soweit: Vom 1. Mai bis zum 31. Mai 2021 findet zum neunten Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Earth statt. Deutschland ist zum achten Mal dabei. Dabei können unter anderem Nationalparks, Naturschutzgebiete, Geotope und Naturdenkmäler fotografiert und die Fotos hochgeladen werden. Du hast an einem der vergangenen Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen. Deshalb laden wir dich ein, auch dieses Jahr wieder mitzumachen. Wir freuen uns auf deine Fotos!

Wie du bei den Top 5 des vergangenen Jahres siehst, sind vor allem Tiere unter den Siegerbildern. Aus diesem Grund setzen wir den Fokus dieses Jahr stärker auf Landschaftsaufnahmen. Aber natürlich haben auch Tierbilder eine Chance zu gewinnen.

Es sind wie immer viele spannende Motive überall in Deutschland zu finden. Neben Naturdenkmälern wie alten Bäumen oder Naturparks im Gebirge und am Meer können Geotope wie Findlinge, Quellen und Aufschlüsse oder FFH-Gebiete fotografiert werden, um sie unter anderem in der Wikipedia zu dokumentieren. Auch im vergangenen Jahr sind zahlreiche neue Listen und Artikel in diesen Bereichen entstanden, für die wir uns über Fotos freuen. Als Einstieg für die Suche nach Motiven hilft diese Übersichtsseite. Weitere Informationen erhältst du bei WLE 2021 - Deutschland und unter dieser Anleitung. Falls du im Moment nicht wie sonst in die Natur fahren kannst, findest du vielleicht in den Tiefen deiner Festplatte oder auf dem Smartphone noch interessante Fotos.

I would not say a mistake. I do a lot of editing of other people's uploads - straightening, cropping, and so on, using Crop Tool. I did quite a batch a few months ago that may have been uploaded by a German editor. I have also been to Germany, but as I recall I did post any pictures from that visit.
