First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

ファイルへのカテゴリ付与について[edit]

はじめまして。私は秋田県、千葉県の写真を中心に投稿している掬茶と言います。
以前「ファイルにカテゴリを付けてください」という通知があったと思いますが、今回その方法について説明したいと思います。
Tomio344456さんは愛知県豊橋市（足助地区）の画像を多く投稿しておられますが、
足助地区はそのカテゴリがあるので、ファイルをアップロードする際『カテゴリやその他の情報を追加する...』の欄を開き、
カテゴリの欄にAsuke, Aichi（Asuke,とAichiの間には半角スペースを入れてください）と入れ、追加ボタンで入力することでカテゴリが付与されます。
豊田市の他の地域なら同様にToyota, Aichiと入力してください。アップロードした後のファイルに対しては、
編集の欄を開き、Category:Asuke, Aichiと追加することで、カテゴリが追加されます。
また、一つのファイルに複数のカテゴリを追加することができる（むしろこちらの方が一般的）ので、例えば学校ならSchools in Aichi prefecture、
郵便局ならPost offices in Aichi prefecture、神社ならShrines in Aichi prefecture、寺ならTemples in Aichi prefecture（いずれも愛知県の場合）など、必要に応じてカテゴリを追加してください。

さて、このたびは大島ダム（File:Oshima Dam, Shinshiro 2009.JPG）と朝霧湖（File:Asagiri Lake, Shinshiro 2009.JPG）の写真を提供していただきありがとうございます。拝見しましたところ、写真のダムは大島ダムではなく、宇連ダムという別のダムのようです。お手数ですがファイル名を変更の上、再度アップロードしていただきたく思います。「適切なファイル名を指定する」という観点から、お願い申し上げます。--Qurren (talk) 13:28, 6 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ご指摘の3川については、とりあえず『緑区の史蹟』（あるいは『緑区史跡巡り』にも一部）に記述があります。
それらによれば、
志水川は鳴海町字石堀山と同町字前之輪の境を北上し扇川に流出する川であること、
手越小川は字神明地内において手越橋の北に橋がかかる川であること、
鴻ノ巣川は字鴻ノ巣地内において琵琶ケ池から排出する川であること、などが分かります。
なお、上記記述に相当する河川・水路は現在でも部分的に確認可能ですが、
一方で、町名変更による地名の消滅や区画整理による水路の暗渠化などで全体像が分かりにくく、
私も地図作成にあたり、昭和40年頃以前の名古屋市都市計画基本図などから類推して流路を描いた覚えがあります。
また、上記の3河川は、江戸時代の史料には登場するようですが、
名古屋市などによる公式な命名はおそらく存在しないか、あっても異なるかもしれないと思います。
私も現地をたずねて橋名板などが無いか探したこともありましたが、見つかりませんでした。
そんな河川を他の「公的な」河川と同図に記載したものですから、紛らわしいことこの上なかったかもしれませんね。 戸河美緒子 (talk) 05:14, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
