Resignation

--Herby talk thyme 08:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC) I've seen you have resigned as an admin. I want to be the first to say that I think it is very sad, but I understand your decision. I wish you a lot of luck in your life and I really hope to see you again. Kameraad Pjotr 18:31, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Goodbye mate, may you find fair waters wherever your life takes you. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:39, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, I don't exactly why you leave, but I wish you goodbye and perhaps you find back. Adieu! --High Contrast (talk) 19:15, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

It was good working with you, however short that period might have been. I also think this was implemented rather poorly, but I stand by the foundation and their opinion, however poorly that is communicated by Jimbo. Good luck TEIPa. TheDJ (talk) 19:30, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
@The Evil IP address, I've left you my comment on your :de-talkpage. --Túrelio (talk) 20:36, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Sad to see it indeed - you will be missed --Herby talk thyme 08:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I hope you will reconsider, and return to help make Commons a more welcoming place; but thank you for your work here. SJ+ 10:46, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Aw. I'm really saddened by this. I wish you good luck with your endavours. Kanonkas // talk // e-mail // 18:19, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Well I'll not presume too much but good to see an edit :) Now autopatrolled but if you want rollback I'll do that with great pleasure. --Herby talk thyme 10:44, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I trust you ✓ Done & regards --Herby talk thyme 13:25, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind I'm leaving you a message even though your talk page is protected. Seems like I missed some drama while I was away. Lucky me, eh? I'm in the middle of catching up and just realized we lost a couple of great admins, like you. This is not quite the Commons I would've liked to come back to. Now that the smoke seems to have cleared maybe it's time to reconsider. Actually, I have no idea, but I see you haven't completely left, so there's still some hope, right? Rocket000 (talk) 10:14, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Good news

Good to see it. BTW you may want to reduce the protection here...:) --Herby talk thyme 10:22, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Auto-translating polling templates

Regarding this, I'm not sure about translating via Translatewiki, but we can simply do it in our own MediaWiki namespace. I think you know my opinion on auto-translating vote templates. The main reasons I'm against it:

  1. Since we use symbols translating is unnecessary.
  2. Seeing multiple languages in use shows the wonderful multilingual nature of Commons. The meaning is always clear thanks to the symbols. Non-logged in users would see only English and may give the wrong idea about the multilingualism of Commons.
  3. It makes more sense for discussion pages that use a specific language (like non-en village pumps) to show the actual author's words instead of mixing languages.
  4. I don't like things said in the past to change (I learned to live with non-subst'd user messages but I still don't like altering history, especially when users used a template before auto-translation).
  5. Most important: Templates such as {{Vk}} and {{Vd}} need to be as light as possible since they are used many many times on DR pages. They are the main reason most of the pages from this year can't fully render because they're past the limits. Sometimes it's simply the amount of templates used that pushes it over the limit, not just too many expensive parser functions (LangSwitch doesn't have any). The solution to this in the past was to substitute the template, but with auto-translation, this isn't possible (we could do recursive subst but that's no different than replacing the template with text in whatever your interface happens to be in).

I would not like to see, for example, all the variants of {{Support}} to be redirected to the current English version if it was to be auto-translated at some point. I think we should keep non-autotranslated versions of these templates for people who want to use them (like me; a trivial example: sometimes I like to use a certain language on RfAs to match the candidate's native language). However, I also know some people want to use autotranslated templates so I propose the following (using {{support}} as an example):

  • Create MediaWiki:Support with the text "Support". Add translations as subpages of MediaWiki:Support. (Someone already made this!)
  • Use {{int:support}} as the auto-translated version (maybe with a shortcut template).
  • Keep {{support}} (or possibly rename to something like {{Sup}} if we want this to be the canonical (auto-trans.) version) and it's variants un-translated for those that want to use them.

This way everyone's happy (I hope) and we would reduce the stain on the servers. Let me know what you think.

{{DELheader}} is something that definitely needs a lighter form of auto-translation. I wonder if CSS would work, similar to the talk link in signatures. We already have the class "delh" for all the formatting. The other (less ideal) solution would be to have a bot simply replace {{delh}} with the English version when necessary. A good amount (1000s) of DRs have already had this done to them.

As for {{DRbox}}, it is noincluded on DR subpages so it's not really an issue. Furthermore, it can simply be removed from DRs after they are listed. Rocket000 (talk) 15:43, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, you're actually right about the voting templates. I don't think it would do any damage to just remove the autotranslation, it's just that I happen to like voting in a lots of languages ;-). I agree in the point of keeping the different language versions. I see some people using them and think this is also a sign of our multilinguality. Of course, we could also do it here, but I've recently been quite active on Translatewiki and think it's not that bad for translating stuff. A lot of professional people translate into many languages in just a short time. On Commons, I often find it very chaotic to find stuff that needs translating. Concerning {{Delh}} and {{DRbox}}, I definitely think they should have translations. There have been folks not adhering to this and I think language also played a role in it (sometimes it was also some convention from their local wiki). DRbox can indeed be removed afterwards, but for the meantime I think it's useful to have it localized. However, the usage of DRbox will likely decrease anyway after the restructuring of our deletion button. Only those without any JavaScript/AJAX or who don't use the button will need to use {{Delete2}}. I once had the idea of moving every interface and template message to Translatewiki, but not everyone likes it and there are indeed some disadvantages at the moment, like making it more difficult to change the content of one message. --The Evil IP address (talk) 18:39, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
It's fine with me if we use translatewiki, but I have little experience with it. Would we have to create and install an extension like we did for the licenses? The benefit of using our local MediaWiki namespace is that we don't have to leave this wiki to add a translation or use a site where we may not have an account (I don't). Also, updates here are instant. Translating a single word isn't that hard and doesn't require any regular maintenance (such as updating a parameter or something), only corrections if any. The only negatives I see is we could have less translating help if we keep it local (although single words don't take much work) and other projects can't use it if they want to.
{{delh}} and {{DRbox}} should definitly have translations, I was just saying {{delh}} needs a lighter method (non-LangSwitch) if possible and using {{LangSwitch}} or even {{autotranslate}} for {{DRbox}} is not a problem anyway since it only renders on DR subpages themselves and doesn't get transcluded elsewhere. Let's not worry about that one. Rocket000 (talk) 21:18, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Right, for English only people, the Translatewiki is indeed not their wiki. It's possible to "translate" into British and Australian English or to write documentation about the messages, but none of these jobs are fun. Well, the advantage with Translatewiki is that it's really modified for translations, with lists what needs translation/updating and an easy editor. Commons is rather a media repository and not an ideal place for translations. Also, the precedent with the License Texts works good IMO. We could just add new translations to the License Texts, I think, should be no big problem. I'm only unsure about the problem that messages can't be modified that easily. This is no issue with the license texts, because they hardly ever change, but when stuff is used in the interface of Commons, I'd feel it to be good if some folks from Commons, like admins, could easily go and change it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:00, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
File:Perlan.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello. I'm sorry to bother you, but i noticed that you deleted this template. It was a permission from the video game company Ubisoft to use screenshots of their games in Wikipedia. Would you please restore it temporarily so i can move it to the Spanish Wikipedia? Thank you. Biasoli (talk) 22:44, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Hiding the siteNotice

Hey Evil, just wondering why you edited MediaWiki:MainPages.js to hide all the siteNotices. Was there a discussion about this somewhere? Kaldari (talk) 23:42, 10 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I basically only copied this edit there so that the sitenotice is hidden on any main page. I'm not sure, but I think it was because the sitenotice was frequently filled up with novels about uninteresting stuff that was of no use for users on the main page. Hope that helps, --The Evil IP address (talk) 07:38, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Ah, what you probably want to do is #localNotice { display: none; }. That will only hide the local siteNotices, but will still allow centralNotices. The DOM scheme is:
<siteNotice>
   <centralNotice></centralNotice>
   <localNotice></localNotice>
</siteNotice>
Hope that helps. Kaldari (talk) 00:33, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
✓ Done. (Sorry it took a bit longer, I was somehow sure I had done the edit already.) --The Evil IP address (talk) 07:54, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

Artur Balder is back

Hi friend, as you can see, the article about Spanish writer and now too filmmaker Artur Balder has come back in English and 15 other languages, included, of course, Spanish, German, Italian and so on. You did delete all the pictures about this person and now we need them. Internet is full of pictures about this well-known writer (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22artur%20balder%22&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:es-ES:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1320&bih=677)that you and some other depicted as spam... Anyhow: we need pictures for the many articles. So let me know how to proceed because I dont want you to be there around destroying material without to ask why...--Lolox76 (talk) 20:39, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Sure, I'm gonna take a look at it. Which images are you referring to? I couln't find any from your account that appear to be of Artur Balder. --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:44, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello!

I support your decision on this cat-discussion but I think the consens of this discussion supports a deletion of category-tree as well. Another question: why was Category:Women named Maria not deleted? Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 15:22, 21 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello, the "Women named Maria" category is not yet deleted, because there are still subcategories in there. There were 350, too much for a human. I think Martin H. is currently working with his AWB on it. And is it really consensus to delete the whole tree? I don't see a use in Category:Men by given name, but it's not the same as "Woman named ...". --The Evil IP address (talk) 15:29, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
Where is the notable difference between "Woman named ..." and Category:Men by given name? According your deletion rational there is no difference. --High Contrast (talk) 19:21, 21 August 2011 (UTC)
On second thought, I think you're right. The categorisation is also based on names, which isn't good for categorisation (just as forenames are). --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:46, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Tree is deleted. --The Evil IP address (talk) 12:38, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

All images uploaded using this template have to be Public Domain images. It was moved to commons since PD images should be uploaded to commons.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 19:30, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Sure thing. I've deleted it because the Replace this image scheme doesn't exist and we should make use of already existing processes, e.g. Commons:Upload, the UploadWizard, instead of adding another one on top of it. It's just getting more confused for users than they already are. --The Evil IP address (talk) 09:16, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
