First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

Julian the Apostate[edit]

Hi! I noted your picture request. Are you talking about this statue? I can shoot it next time I go to the Louvre (viz. in less than a week) but it seems this is not actually a representation of Julian the Apostate. Please let me know if you need other pictures from this museum. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 12:30, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Here you are. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 18:57, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A small but significant part of the exhibits travel in the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities. One time it's here, the other time it's over there, on your third trip it's back in the storeroom. The pictures you are referring to must have made in a time where the statue stood in the Denon wing. If you show me a picture with some background I can identify the room more precisely. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 16:13, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Reisio is still at it[edit]

I think I may be too involved now to play the role of an admin. I'm sorry and I hope this all works out soon. Rocket000 05:34, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please explain this edit as it was commented out after discussions on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#User:VeroStupido. Gnangarra 02:31, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did not notice the discussion; however I do not see why censoring the edit (even after the deletion of that image, which was far fater than the procedure for the removal of the original image) helps the discussion. --TcfkaPanairjdde 19:49, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted image re-uploaded[edit]

You deleted Image:Inca Logo.png for copyright violation, but User:Kyro re-uploaded it. Could you please check the matter? --TcfkaPanairjdde (talk) 23:24, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Weird. It's on Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Inca Logo.png now. rootology (T) 00:34, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, TcfkaPanairjdde!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

The Flickr images found in Joe Genario's photostream have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Ingresso principale città universitaria di Roma.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File renaming[edit]

Hey there, saw you were requesting rename rights. The reason the bot denied the rename on first try was because a "trusted" (that is, established) user had not confirmed that the requested name is appropriate. Since there is the potential for inappropriate renaming, only well-established users are allowed to perform this function. File rejected by the bot are placed into a category which trusted editors such as myself can patrol and confirm for renaming. I've gone ahead and confirmed the requested renaming for File:RIC 0002.2.jpg, so make sure and do not edit this file again until the renaming has taken place, otherwise the bot will reject it again (if this happens, just let me know and I'll reconfirm). If you have any questions, just let me know :) Huntster (t@c) 14:21, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alitalia HQ[edit]

In that case, it is possible to take these pictures, but they may only be uploaded to the English Wikipedia or others that allow fair use provisions. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:27, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is under United States law, so we have this thing called "fair use" - Commons does not accept fair use pictures, but other Wikipedias do. See en:Wikipedia:Fair use - We can use fair use to upload photos of some objects considered copyrighted in Italy, provided that we provide a proper justification. Anyway, the justification I plan to use is that the article should display a photo of the company headquarters; because of Italy's copyrighting of photographs of modern buildings, it is impossible to provide a free version of the photo, so it is acceptable to use a copyrighted version of the image under fair use.
In summary, Italian courts are to accept and be at peace with any proper fair use of Italian images, because the English Wikipedia and other Wikipedias are under United States law and allow fair use. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:10, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Have the Italian courts been involved in cases involving publishing of images of legitimately fair use purposes in the United States? Is there a precedent? Would the courts really make a big deal about this case? IMO the equivalent of a photo of the Alitalia headquarters would be, say, a 10 second sampler of a song, not a full on copy of an entire song. The point of fair use is not to replace the original market role for the media. I.E. a 10-second sample of a song will not replace the original market role for a song, while a copy of an entire song would replace the original market role. Likewise a single photo of the Alitalia headquarters is not going to replace the market role of the architect who designed the building.
Also if the Italian courts would really make a big deal about this, one could get around it by asking that only non-Italian citizens fulfill the request.
As a note, another photo request from a non-panorama country, France, has just been completed. An image of the Air France headquarters is available on the English Wikipedia, and it may be available on the French Wikipedia, which accepts very limited fair use circumstances.
As for where I am from, I am a citizen of the United States and a resident of Houston, Texas WhisperToMe (talk) 20:23, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There may be people who say something like, "I am willing to do it, but I do not want to get prosecuted, let alone convicted." If the courts will not indict people for posting a photo of the Alitalia HQ on Wikipedia as a proper fair use image, then Italian citizens may be willing to do it.
Also the architect may be more willing to ask for indictments or stir up trouble if the building or complex is particularly architecturally noteworthy. I haven't heard of any particular things from the Alitalia building. I also looked it up on Google Maps Street View, and it doesn't look particularly ornate or architecturally distinct, so maybe the architect may not be as willing to raise a ruckus if a photo of his building is on the English Wikipedia. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:29, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I want to move the discussion we had at Commons:Picture requests/Requests/Europe to the talk page. The page itself is meant for picture requests, not a long-winded discussion of Italian copyright law. My request for the Alitalia HQ is still open and will continue to be open, but only for EN and other fair use accepting Wikipedias. EDIT: Discussion moved here: Commons_talk:Picture_requests/Requests/Europe WhisperToMe (talk) 02:49, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As a note, the photo request list is not only for the Commons; it is for all Wikimedia projects, including all Wikipedias. WhisperToMe (talk) 06:08, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I photographed the Alitalia head office building myself. It may be uploaded on the Commons because the building has no artistic design. Only buildings with artistic and/or non-utilitarian designs are covered by fair use laws. The building is in the center of this image: File:AlitaliaHQFiumicinoItaly.JPG WhisperToMe (talk) 17:24, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 • In response to your comments:
 • COM:FOP#Italy
 • In order to determine whether it is copyrighted, we need to know the date of construction and/or the architect name. I can't find anything about when this building was constructed. As a matter of fact, I decided to ask at the Italian Wikipedia bar: it:Discussioni_Wikipedia:Ambasciata#Alitalia headquarters
 • Plus, does Italy have a threshold of originality? That Alitalia building is not original at all. It is a plain office building. In France in order for a building to be protected, it has to have an original design. The Air France head office, for instance, is protected as it has a special design.
 • WhisperToMe (talk) 07:32, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Legal counsel[edit]

Another thing I must add is that the Wikimedia Foundation does have a legal counsel. Why not ask the Wikimedia legal counsel to look over European copyright laws and to ask for their recommendations regarding potential government action (from European governments) against people who publish images that clearly qualify as fair use in the United States? WhisperToMe (talk) 00:30, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ciao. --User:G.dallorto (talk) 16:24, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
