First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

...has been deleted. Please see Commons:Derivative works. LX (talk, contribs) 21:47, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Appropriately Licensed[edit]

You participated at the earlier discussion on licence choice for Featured Pictures. A number of users felt that such restrictions should be made at policy level. Please comment at Commons:Requests for comment/AppropriatelyLicensed. This is a proposal to amend this licence policy to disallow future uploads where the sole licence is inappropriate for the media (e.g., GFDL for images). In earlier discussions there were a number of comments that, while reasonable opinions, did not align with Wikimedia's mission for free content. Please read the FAQ before commenting. Notifying users when speedy-tagging their uploads[edit]

Please remember to leave a note on their talkpage (Commons:Deletion requests/Speedy deletion standard). If nothing else, it helps us distinguish chronic-problem from hit'n'run from occasional mistake. Thanks. DMacks (talk) 06:58, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for letting me know! My apologies for the oversight. Spencer (talk) 13:20, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I have a delete-o-matic button that can automatically fire up a notify-a-majig:) DMacks (talk) 13:21, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a Twinkle equivalent on Commons that can tag and notify together? Sorry I'm not too familiar with the system here, and any pointers in the right direction are much appreciated :). Spencer (talk) 13:27, 30 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets "Quick Delete" might be useful for you. DMacks (talk) 23:18, 1 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Prepend/append VisualFileChange[edit]

Reg. Special:Diff/412348209: Hello! When you are prepending och appending text that you want on a row on its own, don't forget to press the enter key after what your inserting (prepend) or before what you're inserting (append). No biggie but just good to know.Jonteemil (talk) 23:10, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the rest too :).Jonteemil (talk) 23:13, 17 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'm still trying to figure out the tools here so I appreciate the tip :) Spencer (talk) 18:56, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, just ask if you've got questions :).Jonteemil (talk) 02:56, 19 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Restore the photo[edit]

Hello. I think you deleted this photo for nothing. Please, you can restore it. It is located only in the Kazakh Wikipedia. And used only for the design of the article. I do not think that using photos from the Kazakh site will damage the reputation.

I tagged the file for deletion but did not delete it myself. Please review the message left on your talk page regarding why it was deleted. Spencer (talk) 00:21, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion tool[edit]

Hello Spencer. I wanted to know if you know about an automatic tool that exists on Commons to nominate images for speedy deletion. I normally nominate images manually. Thank you. NytharT.C 08:11, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nythar, yes there is! See above on my talk page at User_talk:Spencer#Notifying_users_when_speedy-tagging_their_uploads: go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and enable QuickDelete. After this is enabled, you'll see additional links along the left side, and the one I use most often is "SpeedyDelete". For this, typing in "F10" and "G10" for those associated speedy deletion criteria, typically when I'm deleting spam on en.Wiki (G10) or U5 userpages with personal photos (F10) and trying to cleanup the photos here on Commons as well. Spencer (talk) 08:16, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I enabled the gadget, but I can't see a "SpeedyDelete" option on the left side. Perhaps it's called something else? NytharT.C 08:24, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nythar Do you see it when you navigate to an image file? I don't see it here when I have my talk page open, but when I am on the page of an image file it appears. Spencer (talk) 08:26, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Still isn't appearing. There's an option for "Nominate for deletion" and a few others, but not a SpeedyDelete option. NytharT.C 08:34, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The only other thing I can think of is for you to navigate to your /common.js, and copying the stuff in from lines 3 down from mine User:Spencer/common.js. (And will need to refresh your cache for changes to implement). If that doesn't work, you'll want to ask for additional help at the Commons Help Desk, since I'm not sure what else you should try. Spencer (talk) 08:38, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That worked! Thank you very much, it'll be much easier now :) NytharT.C 08:42, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
