Hi Siebrand,
The picture was uploaded to the english Wikipedia as an update to a GFDL picture which has since been moved to Image:Old_tablet_press.jpg. I didn't want to simply delete the picture of the newer press, so I moved that as well, and started discussing the issue by email with the uploader. He is in contact with me, and I have asked him to address the copyright issues. --Slashme 06:53, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pulley3.svg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-3.0 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Image deletion warning Image:Narnia Timeline.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Asterias

Hi! I changed one of the labels for the Asteroidea image. I re-labeled "anus" to intestine, because the anus is the opening to the exterior of the animal, which is on the surface of the dermis.Since none of the exterior of the animal is shown, technically the anus is not shown. The structure that runs between the pyloric stomach and the anus is the intestine. Thanks!

Hello, Slashme!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thank you a lot for this new version, your work is very useful for many of us Wikipedians out there. Cipika (talk) 12:44, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the great feedback! I still need to make it work with Internet Explorer some time... --Slashme (talk) 19:31, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

--Túrelio (talk) 19:28, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

--Slashme (talk) 19:48, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry that I talked to you in German. Due the location Lörrach I had somehow assumed that you are from Germany. I'll hide the original image version or would you prefer a version-deletion? --Túrelio (talk) 20:05, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Passt schon! --Slashme (talk) 20:22, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Image of a 5c collet working

The image on the page of collets shows a sequence of operation of the 5c collet which does not make sense to me.

The sequence shown is ...

 • collet placed into collet space by user's hand movement
 • collet draw bar threaded onto the inside end of the 5c collet and pulls the collet into the head, locking the collet into place
 • machining
 • workpiece magically sliding into the collet hole. If you think about it, this is not possible.
 • workpiece withdrawn at the end of machining.

A correct sequence would be ...

 • collet placed into collet space by user's hand movement
 • collet draw bar threaded onto the inside end of the 5c collet
 • workpiece slid into collet to depth
 • draw bar tightened to pull the collet into the head, locking the collet into place
 • machining
 • draw bar unthreaded from inside end of collet, releasing tension on the collet
 • workpiece withdrawn from the relaxed collet.

It's such a nice looking animation but to me seems wrong. Perhaps if it were corrected would make people like me trying to understand how things work less confused. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 118.210.150.161 (talk) 13:00, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this feedback. The way I had designed the animation was:
 • Collet placed into collet space
 • Draw bar threded onto inside of the collet
 • Draw bar pulled to maximum range, tightening collet completely: it can be seen that the workpiece is too large to enter
 • Draw bar released enough to allow the workpiece to enter
 • Collet tightened around workpiece
 • Collet loosened, allowing workpiece to exit
I can see now that the whole "doesn't fit when closed; open slightly; now it fits" demonstration isn't really helpful to the user, so I can change that.
I don't really understand what aspect of the animation leads you to conclude that there is machining taking place before the workpiece / tool enters the collet, but maybe I could make this clearer by making the thing in the collet a drill bit, and spin it a few times before releasing it.
If you have a username, please let me know so that I can alert you when a new animation is ready. --Slashme (talk) 08:09, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ClassicalGuitarDiagram.svg

Good day! I found this amazing picture that you uploaded. I'm trying to translate the few words used in the picture into my native language. I'm using Inkscape. Not really good at it. Could you tell me how I can change the text? Should I first erase the English phrases? To be honest, I don't really know how to erase text which is not a separate object in Inscape. Could you please help me? We use two scripts, so I'll need two versions of the picture, one in Cyrillic and one in Latin. I simply need to replace Open strings with Ochiq torlar/Очиқ торлар and Open with Ochiq/Очиқ. Nataev talk 12:02, 16 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nataev, we can make this a multilingual SVG like this one. If you like, I'll do that this evening. Which language is this? --Slashme (talk) 11:58, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be just amazing! I want to use the picture on the this small website that I've launched. It is the first, and so far only, Uzbek website on learning to play the guitar. I created this diagram in Cyrillic Uzbek using this source file. I think at some point we can create a multilingual SVG version of that file as well. As for your picture, I can help with translating it into Russian, Turkish, and Uzbek (Russian: Открытые струны (open strings), Открыто (Open); Turkish: Boş teller (Open strings), Açık (Open); Latin Uzbek: Ochiq torlar (Open strings), Ochiq (Open); Cyrillic Uzbek: Очиқ торлар (Open strings), Очиқ (Open)). That'd be AWESOME, man. Nataev talk 08:30, 19 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nataev, I've applied the switch, but although my browser, Inkscape and rsvg-view3 render the file fine, it seems that Wikimedia doesn't render it correctly as a PNG: even the old versions don't show the notes properly in the thumbnails. This seems to be a Wikimedia bug, and not related to the internationalisation. Can you check whether the other languages show up if you open the original SVG in your browser? --Slashme (talk) 17:35, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Thank you for taking the time! My browsers are not rendering the PNG versions properly. The original SVG is a little messed up as well: the notes are not displaying and one label is in Russian, another in Uzbek. Maybe creating separate language versions would easier. What do you think? Nataev talk 09:38, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll check whether I made a mistake with the language tags, and I'll also create separate PDF versions for the various languages. - - Slashme (talk) 09:51, 25 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be great! Many thanks! Nataev talk 03:57, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm traveling at the moment, and I didn't bring a mouse, and I see that when I open the diagram in Inkscape, the notes don't line up properly with the sharps and flats, so I'll have to create the PDFs after 5 January, when I'm back home. --Slashme (talk) 12:27, 26 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Can you make these corrections in File:Countries driving on the left or right 1900.svg?

In 1900, these places drove on the left and thus need to be colored in blue:

 • Austro-Hungarian Empire
 • Bosnia
 • Portuguese Timor (East Timor)
 • South Sudan (then part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan)
 • Aden Colony (South Yemen)

In 1900, these places drove on the right and thus need to be colored in red:

 • Brazil
 • Paraguay
 • South Korea (then part of a unified Korea)

Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, southern Poland and Bosnia are themselves colored in red, when they need to be colored in blue. British Columbia is shown too large, because it incorrectly covers Alberta.

Please see the articles en:Left- and right-hand traffic and en:List of countries with left-hand traffic and the sources.

Kindest regards.

Matricatria (talk) 20:16, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Matricatria: I'll do my best to figure out the borders of those countries as of 1900. Maybe I can do it tomorrow, maybe over the weekend. --Slashme (talk) 21:54, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Matricatria: I did my best to draw an approximate border for Austria-Hungary. Please take a look to see whether it looks OK now, and if not, please let me know which corrections to make! --Slashme (talk) 11:01, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the corrections! Austria-Hungary is indeed complete as are the other countries and territories. Only British Columbia and North Yemen need to be corrected. British Columbia is shown too large, because it incorrectly partially covers Alberta; and North Yemen, which was an Ottoman province, never drove on the left ( unlike the British Aden Colony (South Yemen)). Matricatria (talk) 11:43, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Matricatria: I've applied those changes, except that I think British Columbia is OK: the map projection is a bit different from some others, but if you look at where the lakes are, you can see that Alberta is still in red. I also noticed that some of the countries had just had blue or red areas roughly placed on top of existing countries without any change to the borders that I could see, so I've cleaned that up: you'll see that China, the Gambia, Angola, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Somalia and Ghana look a bit better now. --Slashme (talk) 12:20, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for pointing out British Columbia. Thank you very much for all your work! Matricatria (talk) 12:32, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello.
Can you color Argentina and Uruguay in blue?
Uruguay and Argentina drove on the left in 1900. Argentina switched to the right in 1945 and Uruguay switched to right in 1946.
They are the only South American countries to do so.
Sorry for overlooking this important detail. Otherwise, the map you corrected, is indeed updated.

Please forgive me. Belize, when it was a British colony and then known as British Honduras, switched to the right in 1961. Before that, it drove on the left. That is the last country, I forgot, that needs to be corrected. You can rest assured.

Yes it's working for the latest files. Thank you! You're right that author info is not really needed since they are PD anyway, but missing it would put the files into Category:Files with no machine-readable author.--Roy17 (talk) 23:38, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About parliament diagrams

Hey there, I saw the message on my talk page and I admit that some parliament diagrams are actually fake ones. I made those parliament diagrams because I also use them for some literary projects that I'm developing. I understand that it's not correct making fake diagrams. I also make real diagrams such as the Portuguese parliaments from the First Republic and during the Monarchy. I suggest making a specific website for fictional diagrams to avoid this kind of fake parliament fever...

Thanks for the attention Odnailro (talk) 12:28, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Odnailro: It's absolutely fine for you to create the diagrams using the parliament diagram tool, just don't upload them to Wikimedia commons! You can download the diagram after creating it and then upload it to another website. --Slashme (talk) 12:49, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As you've probably noticed, I've been deleting all the out-of-scope election diagrams. Thanks for all your work creating the DRs. Is there any way to restrict use of your tool to established users (perhaps with a certain number of edits?) That might prevent some of the non-contributors who are using it for web hosting. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:1975 2 Forint coin obverse.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi David, when I introduced the template for categorizing WPDC a logo was needed. I found some at Category:GitHub logos and took not the best looking one but that with the least byte size Feather-logos-github.svg. When you want another logo to be used, please just tell me ! As well you may create your own special SVG icon? Otherwise if you don't care at all it may remain as it is. PX -- sarang사랑 09:24, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vielen Dank, sarang! --Slashme (talk) 08:49, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
File:Pierre Antoine Berrurier.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you, the file should definitely be deleted if a better version is available. --Slashme (talk) 17:09, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo Slashme,
