My recent FPC closure[edit]

I admit, this was a mistake on my part; I looked at the date/time stamp of the original nomination only, not those of the other versions. Still, the closure was actually 5h44m early, not "one day"; and I think it unlikely that a flurry of last-minute "oppose" votes (4 or more) would have been cast in those 5¾ hours, so probably no harm done.

The FP promotion of this image has revealed a bigger problem, with the improper closure of the last two months' FP noms; see my post at the Village pump.

Also, there remain 5 debates which should be closed (the oldest one of which was "14:04, 28 June 2008 (UTC)", so the nine days expired just over three hours ago) and one more which will reach the end of its nine days in about an hour; but my modem is playing up (it's a Huawei E220, and they're unreliable, at least where I live), so I'll leave those to anyone else who feels like doing them. -- Korax1214 (talk) 16:10, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Abenberg SK 0001.jpg[edit]

For more than eight days now, I have been looking at the thumbnail of this image as it slowly falls from its original nomination at QI. Thank you for nominating it. There was a GIMP splash about 5.5 to 6 years ago; I haven't looked at those recently but this image of yours is enough to seem like the sane image that splash started as. There is an encouragement to make the splash to be somewhat zany; at that time, that particular splash did not seem to nice though or fun or funny. I tried to make mine non-specific to any particular individual who was involved, usually. Those were never accepted. I actually am here still trying to determine what good reasons the author of that splash had to never acknowledge my contribution and the reasons for the appointment of that person over all others. Married with at least one child, maybe two -- it seems (to me) to be a situation where it would be not so good to try to make a living from a free software community.

Eight days of thinking about this due to that entry of yours which is very beautiful. I do not know how many people are as fortunate as I have been to live in a city (not a big and overwhelming one) and in a rural area. They both have a beauty to them. I really liked the panorama of Italy that was nominated the day after this image of yours I speak about now -- it had a feeling of real life. It wasn't so personal as this one of yours.

Thanks for taking the time to drop images into the QI page. Many times, they get picked off the top and I might not get a chance to look at them. I don't know how many people see those development version splash, it should be in the archives at the web site -- I am opting to keep your image in my mind and not dig that out. Images (photographs and paintings) are both personal and shared, this one felt kind of personal. The shared image of a road is not so personal though. It is a good image; perhaps for many. Original had more support but also more oppose, totalling a 80% support tally (8/10), while the edit 2 had less oppose and a 87.5% support tally (7/8). D90[edit]

Hello Simon. Yes indeed: I bought a D90 last december as my second digital camera, with a AF-S 18-200mm DX lens. Till then, I had only a Canon PowerShot A620, which is really excellent in its category but has the typical limitations of many compact cameras: lens distortion, noise... Till now, I didn't make a lot of photos with my D90, as the gloomy winter days in NW Europe are not the best season for making pictures. So I'm still discovering all the possibilities of my new camera. Anyhow, my first impressions are very good. It reminds me a little bit the feeling of my good old Leica R6, although the latter is yet more "gediegen und solide" of course! Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

Profile size creep: The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
Activity criterion: It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Hi. I have proposed that your picture File:Sebald-Grab SK 01.jpg should not be a QI for two reasons: Firstly, the main object of the picture is too dark for me to make out any detail. The object should of course be dark, but still I'd have liked it a little bit less so. Secondly, the two right windows are very blurry in a slightly odd way; they actually look double-exposed. Motives like this one are the kinds that can benefit greatly from multi-exposure compilation (in HDR software), and it looks a little bit like that is what you have done, but with slightly unalligned exposures. One might argue that the background should be unsharp to draw the attention to the main subject, but IMO that doesn't hold when so much of it has been included in the framing of the picture. /Dcastor (talk) 09:39, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Zinnia elegans[edit]

Hey Simon! Ich bin gerade über die Zinnie auf deine wahn-sinns (!) Fotos gestoßen! Wow, die sind unglaublich super. Teilweise sehen sie durch das Licht total unwirklich und fast wie Gemälde aus. Ich glaub, das macht mir Lust darauf, mich doch für eine Spiegelreflexkamera zu entscheiden und mich dafür ein wenig mit der Materie auseinander zu setzen.... Naja, in erster Linie wollte ich dir bescheid sagen, dass ich das Zinnien-Foto für eine Pflanzenbeschreibung für meine Ausbildung benutzen werde. Ich hatte zwar auch eins (mit Biene allerdings), aber da sieht man die Blüte nicht so gut und die Qualität ist natürlich wegen dem "Knipser" aus der Firma um Welten schlechter.
