Categorising photographs[edit]

Thankyou for categorising images for Wikimedia Commons, including a lot of photographs of historic buildings. However, please may I encourage you to categorise more precisely? For example, you categorised File:Earl Sterndale - St. Michael's Church and Churchyard - geograph.org.uk - 1514007.jpg under Category:Churches in Derbyshire and Category:Earl Sterndale instead of using Category:St Michael's church, Earl Sterndale.

I have two reasons for asking. One is the practical reason that it makes files easier to find. The other is more self-centred of me: I have spent the last few years refining the categorisation of certain subjects on Wikimedia Commons, and made a lot of progress, but a new influx of files into an imprecise category such as Category:Churches in Derbyshire is a setback that gives me a significant amount of work!

Not every church yet has an individual category. Hence it made perfect sense for you to put File:Swanwick Church.jpg in Category:Swanwick, Derbyshire. Creating a category for an individual church, if done thoroughly, can be a bit specialist and fiddly. But I am happy to do that, and I have now created Category:St Andrew's Church, Swanwick and populated it with all the relevant files that I managed to find.

I hope you won't think ill of me for this request. I am autistic and preoccupied with creating order in my specialist subjects, so you are welcome to consider me obsessive! And thankyou once again for your contributions.

Walking from start to finish[edit]

I hear what you are saying- relative to Pennine Way- but dispute that you can handle this image just geographically. The core category is Pennine Way, and it should contain very little, a host of subcats and images that should be placed in one or two missing subcats. The start point and end point, will be two of them. A sub cats we need to have Categorys by location (done), Iconic points, Hostellries used by walkers in the Pennine Way, Folk-lore of the Pennine way, Flora on the Pennine way... etc.

The image needs to be in all these categories. According to my reading of the rules- if any of the needed sub-cats is missing then you plonk the image in the parent cat- however nice talking to you- and if you ever want to buy me a pint- this is a pub we could try. --ClemRutter (talk) 18:16, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ClemRutter: . I think I'd be fine with having the image in the Pennine Way category if it was made clear why it was there. At the moment there are more than 900 images, so it isn't immediately clear to someone browsing the category if a few are of particular significance, rather than just waiting to be put in a more specific category. I've added the pub, and the end point, to a new Category:Pubs_on_the_Pennine_Way, which seems a reason secondary hierachy, although there may be others. I've also added a link to the start and end points in the description of the Pennine Way. Silverfish (talk) 21:08, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a little more cleaning on the Pennine Way cat (892)- I think we are going in the same direction now.--ClemRutter (talk) 10:54, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
File:521792 406382672782834 1565877809 n.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
