You are claiming to be the author of this (and several other) image on Commons for which you do not provide any EXIF data and have only a small image size. This makes me wonder if you yourself actually took the picture. If so, would you consider providing appropriate EXIF data and a larger image size? If not, would you care to explain your decision? If you are not the original author, then the image needs to have the correct author and source added or it will be at risk of being nominated for deletion. Thanks!! EXIF is not a must on Commons. In my case, the lack of EXIF is due to the lack of a good CR2/RW2 raw to JPG converter. Shyamal (talk) 05:43, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Pictures from the British Library flickr collection.

It looks like you've been finding some great images in the BL Flickr collection. Many thanks for taking the time to look through it, and for finding such good things!

One little request: when you're uploading such images, could you use the ingestion template described here, which sets up some appropriate image templates and categories).

You can see the effect on the description pages for c:Category:Mysore: a gazetteer compiled for Government. One advantage is that it puts the images in page-number order in the category (and also if they are used in another category, like c:Category:Maps of Mysore District.

It also re-writes the description pages to use an {{Artwork}} template, with a link back to the original image on Flickr, and with a facility also to add a link to the BL georeferenced version of the map, once it becomes available; and it adds a source category, to make it easy to find the descriptions of all images uploaded from the BL stream.

So if you could copy and use this script for your recent uploads from the BL collection, I'd be very grateful.

I don't doubt your knowledge. I was asking about procedure. For example, I am sure that File:Marmota sibirica - (Russia, Mongolia) - Rochers-de-Naye, Switzerland, 2009.JPG is not Marmota sibirica, but Marmota camtschatica. The Author weite me that she doesn't know the species, but it was written on the cage. Or File:Ochotona dauurica, Tariat sum, Arkhangai province, Mongolia.JPG is not Ochotona dauurica, but it is Ochotona alpina. And so on. Hunu (talk) 17:59, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Editing the metadata is a simple step that does not require any process, especially if the author has no objection. You can also write some reasoning on the talk page and put in a {{rename}} tag on the image. You can also post on the village pump for administrative assistance. If you stick around long enough on Commons, you might be granted permission to rename files on your own (which is what I did). Shyamal (talk) 07:50, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

The others calls at the start are a couple of white-cheeked barbets ( Megalaima viridis ). I would strongly encourage you to fix the captions of the incorrect identifications if you are sure. We get the quality we deserve on systems like this. Shyamal (talk) 11:20, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

There is no hepatic or red phase known in the common hawk cuckoo. The subadult plumage is more rufous and the throat and breast have streaks. Here is the description from Rasmussen & Anderton 2005 - "Subadult has paler brownish upperparts than immature Large[ie. sparverioides], with dull rufous bars, paler grey head, and narrow buff (not white) bars on tail; breast is streaked and belly marked with brown chevrons, bars or spots, less boldly than in immature Large." Videoconvert from wmflabs is nice!

I found this(https://tools.wmflabs.org/videoconvert) to be a nice tool for uploading videos. It does the conversion and upload into commons in a single pass. The only thing to check before you upload is to go to settings and ensure that license is latest and also ensure the file name is correct. Banded racer picture

Flycatcher Map not correct

Bird books (e.g. 'Birds of East Asia' by Mark Brazil) say that Ficedula narcissina winters in Borneo (and maybe in Phillipines). Neither of these is in the 'wintering range' for this bird on this map, so the map isn't correct. In addition, the three species are said to have differing wintering ranges, so just one range is not adequate, either. Maybe it would be better to delete this map?

This was made mainly to illustrate F. zanthopyga - for the others only the breeding area was supposed to be indicated - the wintering area is for zanthopyga - maybe the caption needs correction. It is unfortunate that it is in use for F. narcissina articles. You can correct the map - that is the idea behind SVG format. Shyamal (talk) 06:43, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Shyamal - File:SpanishSparrowMap.svg needs a small update; the birds in the western half of Turkey are P. h. hispaniolensis, with P. h. transcaspicus in Cyprus and eastern Turkey eastwards (ref.: Summers-Smith in HBW 14, 2009). Another ornithological question

Do you know how eggs of en:Emberiza stewarti look like? I'm asking because the File:Emberiza leucocephalos MHNT.ZOO.2010.11.219 Fergana Uzbekistan.jpg is probably wrong. There is no any sign that Emberiza leucocephalos could breed in Fergana (or Ferghana), Uzbekistan. So if the label is correct, species definition is wrong. I beleve that it could be en:Emberiza stewarti, it has English name the same as Emberiza leucocephalos in Russian. Hunu (talk) 11:11, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

@Hunu: - sincere apologies for the delay, I am not sure how I missed seeing and responding to your message earlier. I am not familiar with the regional status of the bird and my quick searches do not either rule out or confirm their breeding in Uzbekistan but that is because I am mainly looking at English language content on the web. I am afraid I do not know enough to tell whether this is right or if it is likely to be in error. Eggs of most buntings, I presume do look alike which leaves little that we can do. I think egg identification is now quite an extinct art, and little chance of finding anyone with the resources for this region on the En wikipedia - all serious identification from eggs these days is done with molecular methods. Shyamal (talk) 13:16, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Wikiprojects on commons

Hi Shyamal, wanted to check with you how Wikiproject works on Commons. If a user would like to get more and more of his biologist friends/colleagues to upload images on Commons, and if they'd like to do it systematically and in a collaborative way among themselves, is that logic enough to start off a Wikiproject? I ask because they may be interested in implementing it institution-wide so perhaps volume will be large and the people contributing may need a collaborative space to discuss the uploaded images. But, I see Wikiproject scene on commons is not as active as on English Wikipedia....or am I mistaken? Let me know what you think. Is there scope for example for Wikiprojects exclusively for getting images owned by people of a particular organisation onto Commons? Any other means perhaps? Question from Russia

Hello! We are not communicate for long time. Now I have a question not about ornithology but from my another field of interest, recent Russian History. I uploaded to files File:Letter Koteln Prisoner2.jpg and File:GULAG letter.jpg, this are letters from Gulag prisoners which were found recently in buildings which were build by prisoners. Form my point of view both of them obviously correspond to PD-trivial. But some gays would like to delete them. Greetings! I can see that this is a bit annoying but that really is the nature of Copyright law! I think the first can be argued under a presumptive public domain after 70 years after death of the author but the second seems tougher to defend. To top it all the law for "public domain" of works from the Soviet Union seem to have been much debated - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template_talk:PD-USSR - hope this helps but I usually tend not to care too much, a few files are always deleted now and then here like the bunch above due to silly Italian laws that even Italians would not defend! Improved distribution map for Quelea quelea needed

Red-billed Quelea

Thank you again for creating a distribution map for the grey-capped social weaver. I've recently nominated the article on the red-billed quelea as Good Article, see the review talk page. One of the suggested improvements is to include a source for the distribution map. However, the description says it is "own work". It seems to me rather imprecise, given the written descriptions of the distribution of this species. I am wondering if the overlay of two maps which are already on the web (HBW Alive and BBC) would not be more precise, and the result could then be sourced. Distribution map for nelicourvi weaver

Hi Shyamal. Thank you again for the nice distribution maps you made before. This time, I would like to ask you again for a favour. The Nelicourvi weaver article lacks a distribution map. Handbook of Birds of the World Alive provides a simple map, BirdLife International has another simple map. A real detailed map can be found in The Birds of Africa: Volume VIII: The Malagasy Region: Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Mascarenes - Volume 8 van The Birds of Africa, Roger Stafford on page 869 here. @Dwergenpaartje: I have made some slight adjustments but with an overlay of the original map (there is some distortion and I cannot warp it exactly to match the SVG outline map) and I believe it is now close to the original - is there a chance that the historical boundaries were different? - are you using the descriptions in the text? • Felicia echinata, where you may use Fieldguide to Fynbos and/or Grau, J. (1973). Revision der Gattung Felicia (Asteraceae). Mitteilungen der Botanischer Staatssammlung München. IX page 683, figure 12, the circles
• Leucospermum calligerum, where you may use J.P. Rourke (1970). Taxonomic studies on Leucospermum R.Br.:178, the black dots.
• I will most probably also be working on the article on several other species, i.e. Leucospermum cuneiforme (Rourke p.37), Leucospermum conocarpodendron (p.48), Leucospermum cordifolium (p.116), Leucospermum truncatulum (p.200), Leucospermum prostratum (p.208), Leucospermum oleifolium (p. 241), and the genus Leucospermum (p.269), and would like to be able to include distribution maps.

This seems to need more geographic familiarity - and with altitude contours it becomes harder to guide - I have been working with QGIS to try and generate a SVG contour map from open-source DEM files but so far my computer has let me down and I am still trying to reduce the data so that it can work without producing files that are more than a GB. I am still struggling with simplifying rasters but I found that Commons does not even have good physical maps. Added File:Africa-landcover.jpg and File:Africa_contours.svg as by-products. Shyamal L. It certainly is misplaced, looking at the history, I see that I had left it uncategorized. Strangely if you look at the descriptions in the text a few pages after the plate - there is a proper description of Brachypteryx goodfellowi - https://archive.org/stream/ibis961912190712brit#page/652/mode/1up - and I cannot find any mention of the genus Ianthia (or Janthia ) in any synonymy .... I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 580 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps, that is why I asked you.

Hi Shyamal, we have created the 2nd round. Unfortunately, as we found out that Montage is showing only 100 images in the ranking round, we had to divide it into 2 rounds. There would be this 2nd round of rating, where you would be able to rate the images from 1 to 5 and the last round of ranking with the best 100. The good news is by dividing it into 2 rounds the number of images to be judged by each jury would be much lesser. Please do let me know if you have any queries or face any issues. Thanks for the comments, unfortunately it is a bit too late to use this very useful input. Can you please tell me where the text is currently incorrect? Ideally it would be good for you to directly edit and correct what you find as wrong. The contest is a rather large and complex one with several organizers, three jury members - of whom I was one. Obviously we have not been able to incorporate community commentary and judgement into the system, which would have allowed the identification of incorrect metadata at an early enough stage. • I had suggested that the judgement rules be altered to give emphasis on metadata accuracy, value addition to relevant articles, intent and thought process behind creating the images. - Judging these parameters it seems cannot be done by one or two jury members, it really needs to be done by a knowledgeable community process and this might need a lot of time.
• It may be good to provide sufficient time - a first round where the community goes through the images - reviews them for accuracy of metadata, naming, spots any copyvios etc, makes use of good images in articles across languages and implicitly makes a vote. Perhaps some encouragement on this front in terms of community vetting prizes could be considered. I really think this would be a big and welcome step in democratizing what is otherwise a very suspect venture involving jury members making rather private decisions, not perhaps very well justified, and entirely without options for debate or discussion.
• The idea that monuments should be restricted to ASI listed ones appears to be rather limiting - but I suspect that opening it up will again throw up challenges in recognizing what is claimed as above.
• Judgement on photographic merit and judgements on other parameters (such as usability, usage, metadata accuracy etc) cannot be averaged.
• Software such as Montage, while doing well on isolating jury members and encouraging independent rating may also need to do the reverse - open up communications, commentary and feedback especially in what ought to be a last round.
• Montage would do well to provide convenient tools - such as links to Tineye/google image search, usage stats, and EXIF info

@Aristo Class: I have just had a look at en:Army ant, and frankly that article is a mess. I suspect that the original editor started with Eciton (a New World group member) and then someone added other groups into it. I am quite certain that this looks good for a Dorylus. What I am not entirely sure now is whether it is a queen or a male. I thought it was a queen because I saw what looked like a median ocellus. Alex Wild has this image and he is sure his winged specimen is a male https://www.alexanderwild.com/Ants/Taxonomic-List-of-Ant-Genera/Dorylus/i-skh6kbh/A - a male would have a 13 segmented antenna and I can imagine 12 or 13 in this image. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Chemical structures

Please, do not overwrite existing structures with worse equivalents. If you need to use different structure, upload it as a new file. E.g. you file [4] here is in fact incorrect due to using different font style. I have never heard of an IUPAC font specification - those are just print suggestions! The original file is not an SVG, that was the problem that was being fixed. Of course you are free to revert to the original. Shyamal L. (talk) 14:48, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Turns out to be a minor issue - that can be fixed with text to path - the png thumbnailer is altering the appearance. The original raster file does not follow most of the recommendations in the document you have linked either- and does not follow any SVG recommendations on Commons either. Shyamal L. You should either upload new files and propose a deletion of the invalid SVG files, or prepare files that are as similar as possible to those you're replacing – that was not the case, because your new structures had different style from the original. I don't think that replacing structure with one that has different style, different margins etc. is the proper way to handle problems with these images. BTW this file for example was very similar in style (mixing different fonts, serif and sans-serif, not centered bonds, not centered labels) to a bunch of files we're currently trying to get rid off, because of one editor who was impervious to any standards of chemical structure representation and managed to upload hundreds of such files. Sorry, this is not the proper way to draw a chemical structure. You could also ask in WikiProject Chemistry on Commons about this issue and I think someone would create proper structures. I have just had a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Chemistry/Structure_drawing and have been unable to find a similar project on Commons that you suggest - I fully understand the quest for standards but I think this is going to be near impossible (at the SVG level, for instance with or without transforms, metadata and other possibilities) without generating them via a standard toolserver project - perhaps something that does InChI or SMILES to SVG diagram using some canonicalization to produce any standard forms and even the best system will not be without problematic cases (speaking from experience gained with chemoinformatics software development from several decades ago). In any case I am happy to see that there is some effort to clean up the structure diagram files on Commons. Shyamal L. (talk) 03:40, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

File lacking evidence of permission

I don't think we have evidence for it being government work only because it was printed by goverment, however the template {{PD-India}} says PD limitation is 60 years since death for Indian-first published works, it's OK then, thank you. AFAIK it's also better to put {{PD-US}} for such works due to dual nature of the Commons space (: Mithril (talk) 11:01, 4 April 2020 (UTC)

I cant look up File:Vena spuria of Eristalis gatesi.svg, but I thought, that it is the same picture, as it was called "vector version" in the template. If it is not the same pictures the reason doesn't apply, but the template should be deleted. --Kersti (talk) 09:16, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

I am not sure about the history, but I am not sure what you want me to do here. As far as the file I uploaded - File:SyrphidLefroy.jpg goes, it seems to fit PD-US and PD-1923. Image for an Imaginary serpent

Hi Shyamal, could you draw a representative image for a mythical western ghat serpent karinkoli (Crowing crested cobra)? It is imagined as big as areca nut palm, with dark blue/black body. It has a crest on it's head like a rooster. It is also believed that there is a triangle like pattern which appears as the head of an arrow on its hood. Thanks for your message on FB. Great to hear from you again! Hope you're well and don't mind my replying here as I've stopped using FB after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The http://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/Drawing+with+epicycles+and+the+Fourier+transform applet is really impressive: amazing that they can approximate a pretty complex scene with just 200 points. Each point having an amplitude, frequency and perhaps phase, that's only 600 degrees of freedom. I doubt I could make that scene with a polyline with 300 vertices.

Good to see you're still uploading images of birds and insects. Have you found that JPEG are now preferable to SVG?

I've returned to making SVG animations after finding a way to smoothly chain them, as in the Fourier transform animations, File:Epicyclic_gearing_animation.svg and File:Coin_rotation_paradox.svg. I also discovered that using the focus CSS selector lets a teacher select one group to highlight in addition to another on hover, as in en:user:cmglee#historical_trigonometric_functions_graph.svg_☎_4_Jul_2020. I'm still finding out new things about SVG as I go along!

Venn Diagram color error

validating svgs

You seem to understand SVGs quite well, however validating is often not desired, see Help:SVG_guidelines#Why_validation_is_generally_not_desired.

Source-code-edits without visual changes might not be desired, see Help:SVG_guidelines#SVG_sourcecode_edits_without_visual_change for explanation.

Some edits are controversial, and imho should not be done to foreign files:

• File:WM18 metapage Logo.svg used data-name which is a valid SVG2.0-feature, which does not affect rendering, so it is harmless and imho should be kept.
• File:Icon apps query.svg is a valid SVG 1.0-file, i see no reason to remove the version
• File:WikiProject-Denmark-Logo.svg removing a grid
• File:Wikipedia_Library_owl_with_horizontal_text.svg removing aria-label
• File:Logo_Diversity_Conference_Stockholm_2017.svg removing the guides

I think the human editors/creators of the images or their derivatives will themselves not find any issue to complain about - as the software editors will work just as before - but the human editors are naturally welcome to revert changes if they think it has been too greatly altered. I fixed a bunch because the derivatives spawned by some of these with needless clip regions, rasters, repeated layers etc are quite an eyesore that could be avoided. My plan was originally only to fix only those of high usage but I also emptied some invalid categories. I will not be doing any more of these for now.

Most of the extended tags can never be used by editor software - for instance text conversion to paths leaves "aria-labels" as in the library owl above but they are not going to be usable for reversal of paths into text. I can imagine a search-engine functionality but that seems rather distant. (I am aware of the accessibility/assistive technology functionality of the feature but then MW+rsvg only delivers rendered bitmaps most of the time.) Shyamal L. (talk) 01:05, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
