Hello, Shanmugamp7!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Welcome, Dear Filemover![edit]

Hi Shanmugamp7, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
 • Please do not tag redirects as Speedy. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello[edit]

Can you please help me with license.--Camoka4 (talk) 13:57, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, In commons we can't upload fair use materials (see Commons:Licensing), so you have to upload it to the specific projects, in which you want to use that file. File:Innocence of Muslims.jpg should be speedy deleted--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 14:01, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found this image on Businessinsider. Can you put appripriate changes to make it fit for Commons? Thanks.--Camoka4 (talk) 14:10, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
See the bottom of Businessinsider website (* Copyright © 2012 Business Insider, Inc. All rights reserved). I'm sorry to say this, "Without a free license, it's not possible to make it fit for commons", Thanks for your understanding :)--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 14:22, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Or if you can, get permission from author via OTRS to use that image under a free license--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 14:26, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just because that website has a standard copyright notice on the bottom doesn't mean they aren't violating someone else's copyright by using that screenshot in their article (though they could argue fair use). Camoka, you don't seem to get it: this is not a freely licensed image. Finding it elsewhere, changing the stated source to that, and then slapping a Creative Commons tag on it doesn't make it suitable for this particular repository of freely-licensed images! 77.99.26.23 14:50, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you are right, maybe that website also violate copyright. This is what, i've tried to explain to Camoka, btw thanks for helping :) --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 15:41, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"see Commons:FR#Which_files_should_not_be_renamed.3F #2)" - The fact, that this filename is not n english has nothing to do with ist. Rather, as i stated in my renamig request, "Benzynowa lampa gornicza Davy'ego" is misleading because translated into english it says: gasoline mining lamp of the Davy type. And this is not true, the file shows a special purpose device for exact measuring of firedamp. It is ethanol-operated instead of gasoline, whereas a Davy lamp would burn oil. The only similarity to the latter is that it has no glass. No gasoline/benzyn, but ethanol; no lamp, but a measuring device; no Davy, but Pieler. Lamp is of course questionable, such devices where historically named lamps, though they served not as a light source (the Davy lamp does, poorly so). Ethanol burns without a visible flame. --Markscheider (talk) 16:41, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Markscheider, The file name is in Polish lampa górnicza Davy'ego, So as per the criteria, the file may not be renamed to English (ofcourse English is not the only reason, but Polish name would be much better). Could you please suggest a correct name in Polish? Thanks --Shanmugamp7 (talk) 16:55, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, this is beyond my knowledge. I can understand some polish, enough to understand the meaning of the filename without having to use google translate, but i can't write or talk polish. Of course "Pieler" would be the same; it's the name of the inventor. And en:Ethanol is in polish pl:Etanol, so file:Etanol lampa gornicza Pieler'ego.jpg could maybe the answer, but i'm not sure about the suffix "ego". Maybe Pieler demands a different suffix or no suffix at all. --Markscheider (talk) 17:11, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, i just renamed it as per your suggestion, It seems that the uploader is active, so I'm going to ask him/her. If s/he has any objections/suggestion then we will rename it into polish name.--Shanmugamp7 (talk) 17:18, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine for me.--Markscheider (talk) 17:23, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am not the specialist in mining, so I have to trust your suggestions and I agree if you know it better. I am going to correct the Polish description. Julo (talk) 20:04, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Some information on Pieler lamps can be found here.--Markscheider (talk) 21:00, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Misericords in Caen[edit]

Hi Roi.dagobert, Galleries should have at least one media. Per Commons:Galleries Galleries without media are not galleries at all. They are considered out of the project scope and meet the criteria for speedy deletion. . Misericords in Caen is empty, so it meets the criteria for speedy deletion. 2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
