First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thanks for the great picture.

One small problem: the magnification is not very useful if you do not tell the width of the picture in cm or in. (or whatever). On a computer, it depends on the size of the screen… It is more interesting to tell the resolution of the picture (i.e. the smallest thing visible). I estimated it:

  • from the scale, I guess that the 1× is about 113 μm wide;
  • the picture is 1280 px wide;
  • 1 px ~ 113/1280 = 0.089 μm → resolution of about 1 μm.

Telle me if I'm wrong.

Answer: Yes. The scale bar ist 226 pixels wide and represents 20 µm, so one pixel represents 0,088495575221238938053097345132743 µm, so 1280 pixels are 113 µm. That´s how it is in electron microscopy. AFM images are usually simply labelled for example "5 µm" decribing the overall image width. That unfortunately is still not usual for electron microscopy.

Your nominations[edit]

Um, I think you made a mistake. When nominating images you have to use the filename and extension with the "File:" or "Image:" at the top of the filepage. For example File:Ice.jpg <- that is a full filename with extension type. Then when you go to Commons:FPC at the top there's a long, manilla section that says "Formal Things." Read the rules if you haven't yet (there are tips included about what we're supposed to look for in images also) and as you scroll down you'll see a textarea and button that says "Create New Nomination" -> This will lead you to the edit page of something like Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:IMAGE NAME.jpg . You put the filename there, click 'enter' or create new nomination and it takes you to the template to create the nomination page. Once done with that you paste the page name inside of {{}} on top of the candidate list. Also, users are only allowed 2 active nominations at a time. I would've just done that for you but I'm having a hard time figuring out which of the files you uploaded you were attempting to nominate. Thanks, but I believe that is exactly the procedure I did...? I was not sure about video files, I just figured that because there is "picture of the day" and "media of the day" but there is only one nomination procedure explained, that one has to be valid for both types?? I have used video files, theora encoded, file type .ogg, so when I use the scheme from for example "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Hexaplex erythrostomus 01.JPG" for my file called "Coral Acropora 3D.OGG" is should be "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Coral Acropora 3D.OGG, should it not? Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
