First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hi,

I tried uploading the file again (TWICE) but it still shows the error I think you were referring to (typo in date???).

What can I do?

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 20:01, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi it would be nice, if you could explain in the description in greater detail, what kind of hairs and so on I can see on the picture. Now I know it is something interesting which concerns the sensual organs of a wasp, but I don't know what. Kersti (talk) 20:51, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello SecretDisc!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. 85.182.126.61 16:58, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Thanks for the great picture.

One small problem: the magnification is not very useful if you do not tell the width of the picture in cm or in. (or whatever). On a computer, it depends on the size of the screen… It is more interesting to tell the resolution of the picture (i.e. the smallest thing visible). I estimated it:

 • from the scale, I guess that the 1× is about 113 μm wide;
 • the picture is 1280 px wide;
 • 1 px ~ 113/1280 = 0.089 μm → resolution of about 1 μm.

Telle me if I'm wrong.

Regards

Cdang (talk) 16:13, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Answer: Yes. The scale bar ist 226 pixels wide and represents 20 µm, so one pixel represents 0,088495575221238938053097345132743 µm, so 1280 pixels are 113 µm. That´s how it is in electron microscopy. AFM images are usually simply labelled for example "5 µm" decribing the overall image width. That unfortunately is still not usual for electron microscopy.

Hey, just letting you know that the pictures you uploaded of electron microscope magnifications of a butterfly wing were upload to Featured Picture status over on Wikipedia. Congratulations! If you want to nominate any more pictures, please see here. NauticaShades 19:25, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I am deeply moved!!

Your nominations[edit]

Um, I think you made a mistake. When nominating images you have to use the filename and extension with the "File:" or "Image:" at the top of the filepage. For example File:Ice.jpg <- that is a full filename with extension type. Then when you go to Commons:FPC at the top there's a long, manilla section that says "Formal Things." Read the rules if you haven't yet (there are tips included about what we're supposed to look for in images also) and as you scroll down you'll see a textarea and button that says "Create New Nomination" -> This will lead you to the edit page of something like Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:IMAGE NAME.jpg . You put the filename there, click 'enter' or create new nomination and it takes you to the template to create the nomination page. Once done with that you paste the page name inside of on top of the candidate list. Also, users are only allowed 2 active nominations at a time. I would've just done that for you but I'm having a hard time figuring out which of the files you uploaded you were attempting to nominate. I'm not certain about nominating video files, but you can try it. -- IdLoveOne (talk) 19:48, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I believe that is exactly the procedure I did...? I was not sure about video files, I just figured that because there is "picture of the day" and "media of the day" but there is only one nomination procedure explained, that one has to be valid for both types?? I have used video files, theora encoded, file type .ogg, so when I use the scheme from for example "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Hexaplex erythrostomus 01.JPG" for my file called "Coral Acropora 3D.OGG" is should be "Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Coral Acropora 3D.OGG, should it not? Thanks for help! Secretdisc 21:28, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing! And I fixed it sort of. -- IdLoveOne (talk) 06:11, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, has anything been changed about a media of the day nomination page? Am I supposed to use the picture of the day thing also for film clips? Secretdisc 11:36, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

request for use[edit]

Hello, I am trying to get information on using your Microscopy images of butterfly scales (all 4 magnifications) for a book I am working on in design theory. I understand from the Creative Commons Share Alike license I may do this, but I am requesting an ok from you as well as how you would like the work attributed. Can you please help? Asap please, as my deadline is looming. thank you! Maggie Mac

I grant you the right to use those images if you put "Jan Gräser, Germany" in your reference list.

Many thanks, Jan! Will do as you have requested. The book is entitled "Design by Nature" and will be released December 2011 by Peachpit Press. My talk for TEDx is located

 1. REDIRECT 1 and I am happy to send a book to you upon publication if you send an email to me so I can get further info: macnab@macnabdesign.com. Maggie

Here's another request: Dear Jan,

I am a butterfly enthusiast from India. I am currently working on a small field guide for a small nature park in the city of Jodhpur, India. The area of the park was taken over by invasive plants and now with great effort of the park's team they have been able to "re-wild" it with it's native plants:) The link to the park is- www.raojodhapark.com you can find more information about the park here.

I wanted your permission for using your microscopy images of the scales in my field guide. As suggested by you above, we will put "Jan Gräser, Germany" in our credit list. I will also send you a copy of the little booklet. My email address is: junglecentric@gmail.com Please send me your contact so that I can get in touch with you when my book is ready.

With best wishes, Payal

Hi Jan, I am working on a book for school teachers about Nature-inspired engineering and my publisher would like me to get a release signed by you to use some of your images. How can I contact you? My email is samstier AT gmail DOT com (samstier@gmail.com). I hope you get this! Thanks.

Hello, SecretDisc!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Webcam CT transmissions[edit]

Hello,

I'm a grad student in Architecture and I'm currently researching 3D scanning technologies to use in a multimedia project. I'm very interested in CT scanning and I would like to know how did you produce the Webcam video you uploaded.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Webcam_CT_transmissions.OGG

I basically want to know if this was done using relatively safe and accessible equipment or if it required access to advanced facilities.

If you want to reach me by email, write to esterion ALT yahoo DOT com

thanks

I would like the use the picture X-Ray USB-Stick Intenso High-Speed 32GB broken.jpg. But I can nout use it as CC-BY-SA. Is it possible to use it as CC-BY 3.0? It will be used for a IT-security-awareness-campain for parts in the federal armed forces of Germany. --Scooterfan (talk) 14:15, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK!
Okay, thanks for the quick reply. So we will name the source wikimedia.org / SecretDisc or just SecretDisc?
wikimedia.org / SecretDisc would be fine with me!

File:X-ray heart rate monitor sensor belt.jpg[edit]

Hi SecretDisc, and thank you for your excellent contributions! I suspect this tho be a Garmin Heart Rate Monitor. Is that so and would you also know the model number? I would find it helpful to know exactly what is shown. Thanks again, Mike --Mhi (talk) 11:14, 17 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think it is.

Hello! I've seen your photo and it gave me idea. I used it as an example of how photos on free licenses can be amazing and high quality (not only technical quality, but in my opinion also artistic). Thanks and greetings! Krzysiu (talk) 00:03, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
