Re: SN 2006gy
Regarding the deletion of this image, note that on the bottom of the NASA webpage that you pulled it from (here) there is a link to the original authors (here) at the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The image is also credited to them (NASA/CXC), which means it is their work. Their image use policy (here) clearly states "The images on this web site may be used for non-commercial educational and public information purposes", which basically means it can't be used here since those are stringent usage restrictions. While the Commons itself is noncommercial and educational, the goal of this project is to create a repository of images that anyone (including commercial and non-educational) can use for any reason. See the Commons' policy regarding these types of images. Also, I meant to post a notice on your page immediately after deleting them, but I became distracted, so I'm sorry if I upset you. Thanks. --Tom (talk - email) 21:00, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Tagging duplicates
I turned down your speedy deletion request on Image:Dana-perino-02.jpg because it wasn't an exact duplicate. Specifically, Image:Dana-perino-02.jpg is a lightened version of Image:Dana Perino.jpg; such duplicates are plenty welcome on Commons.

Autopatrol given
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. --4nn1l2 (talk) 11:54, 23 June 2019 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Ali Abdullah Saleh - Putin meeting 2010-06-30.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Ali Abdullah Saleh - Putin meeting 2010-06-30.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

- For the record, this is a load of crock. Even if {{Kremlin.ru}} is not an "official" license template, it would have been easier to fix it than go through this song and dance. Just fix it. You know what it is. --SVTCobra 04:26, 18 August 2019 (UTC)
Flickr2Commons
I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first").--A1Cafel (talk) 13:17, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- I have been using the Upload Wizard's "Share images from Flickr". I am not downloading them to my computer and reuploading. They also appear to get automatically reviewed. There may be rare exceptions where I wanted to edit them in a way I couldn't with the Crop Tool. I can't even remember the last time I did that. If you have some examples, I'd be happy to take a look at them and figure out why I didn't use the Upload Wizard.
- I presume you are not telling me to stop using the Upload Wizard. Cheers, --SVTCobra 13:26, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
An unfree Flickr license has been found on File:Donald Tsang at WEF 2012.jpg
acagastya 06:30, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, SVTCobra. Long story short, when I saw the file, and its source, it was licensed under CC BY-NC SA. Any CC license which is either non-commercial or non-derivative is not allowed on Commons, and they are not considered "free". If a person Alice uploads two photos, one being under a free license, and other one is not, well I would suggest you contact them, to release the media under a dual license, one being free. Since the license was incompatible, I had to update the page. But while we are at the discussion of OTRS, I would say, please ask Green Giant, Yann, Steinsplitter, or -revi. Till then, I advise we stick to the free ones which do not have such confusions.
- But you know what, when @Materialscientist: marked it verified, the license must have been free. And they would have changed it later on. So, someone on OTRS team should handle that.
acagastya 06:40, 27 August 2019 (UTC)- I have verified the cc-by-sa-2.0 license for the uncropped image back in 2012, and we have received an OTRS permission after that. Hence I believe this image may be kept on Commons without any further action. Commons takes the position that CC licenses are not revocable. Materialscientist (talk) 10:52, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you both. Cheers, --SVTCobra 14:22, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- While I believe license should not be revokable, I did not know this was allowed. Now I know it is, so I will keep in mind.

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:GeorgieandWolly.JPG
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:GeorgieandWolly.JPG, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- @A1Cafel: On second thought, we use the image at Wikinews and I'd like to not see our archive broken so I am a little invested in this. Also, it is the original work of the Wikipedia uploader (they upload several autographed waterpaintings). I turned the nomination into a regular deletion request. I think you need to show or at least explain what the work is derived from. Cheers, --SVTCobra 17:05, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
