Dispute resolution

Hi, SHB2000. On my most recent RFR, I noticed that you had once again opposed me. If you'd like, we can talk about the reasons for your ongoing opposition towards me; if not, I won't press. I realize that some of my words in the ANU thread didn't sit right with you, and I apologize for that. Since I don't even know how it got to be this way, I would like to know why we are fighting rather than have this argument continue. Take care, 20 upper 22:56, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

What I and most others on the last ANU thread were concerned about relates more so your attitude towards getting perms. I'd like to know why you instigate a battlefield whenever someone opposes – but it's great that you've realised that and are willing to change :-). Thanks for the apology and I wish you a great 2024. --SHB2000 (talk) 00:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't have high emotional intelligence because I find it difficult to take criticism that is directed at me rather than my work. I detest receiving constant criticism and being shunned because of my perceived mistakes. Could you tell me why you don't think I'd be a good patroller or file mover? Have I demonstrated any indication that I don't understand the patrolling or renaming policy, or this all based on trust? 20 upper 07:41, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
The former – all based on trust. --SHB2000 (talk) 08:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
I think you meant to say "the latter". Anyway, is there a specific reason why you don't trust me? 20 upper 09:24, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Oh yes, my apologies. It's a cycle. Talking in more broader terms and not you specifically, when someone demands rights but has their request rejected and respond with further poor and appalling responses, it gives a bad impression on the community that is less willing to give perms out for future requests. The cycle then continues. --SHB2000 (talk) 10:04, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Any suggestions on how to stop that pattern? 20 upper 08:49, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm not qualified to answer that, unfortunately :-(. The one thing I will say is that you probably shouldn't have responded the way you did at COM:RFR#20 upper to The Squirrel Conspiracy and should consider apologising to them. --SHB2000 (talk) 09:10, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Nope 20 upper 10:33, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Eh, then I don't know what the best course of action for you is. SHB2000 (talk) 10:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm a bit confused here, but that's okay. 20 upper 11:13, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, as I said, I'm probably not the best person to ask also because I'm not an admin :-(. --SHB2000 (talk) 11:18, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

sanborn rename

Why are you still renaming Sanborn Plates manually?

  • this will be done with a script
  • except that it won't be done, because the proposal was voted down.
Could you give me links? I'm not aware of the proposal. --SHB2000 (talk) 07:20, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Commons:Village_pump#Sanborn Maps. Time to Vote. Nowakki (talk) 07:44, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Welp, I guess I'll leave the rest as-is. --SHB2000 (talk) 07:55, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Don't you have tech support? What you did could be done by a script in minutes. And it would take minutes to write the script. Seems like a horrible waste of resources. Have you been sentenced to community service or something? Nowakki (talk) 08:11, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Geez, that was needlessly passive aggressive. Sorry, but not everyone can write a script so easily as you could. --SHB2000 (talk) 08:16, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
You don't need to know how to write a script to request it from tech support.
I understand that you are in a kind of regular position to do a community service here, so I imagine that there should be an obligation to provide you with what you need. Nowakki (talk) 08:20, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Incivility

Hi SHB2000, please avoids comments like this one where you suggest that the person you are replying to is not “right in the head”. I suggest to fix that comment. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 10:14, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, AFBorchert, I've toned it down a little? Is it better now? (I often forget that Commons is a multilingual wiki and what might seem native and perfectly acceptable to me might not come out that way to a non-native speaker). SHB2000 (talk) 10:47, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, that is better, albeit not as mellow as it could be. --AFBorchert (talk) 12:49, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Yann, I unfortunately don't have license reviewer right. Extremely sorry about that :-(. --SHB2000 (talk) 21:26, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Files with wrong spelling of proper names

Good morning SHB2000, last night you renamed File:Elisabeth-Flügge-Straße in Hamburg-Alsterdorf.jpg to Elisabeth-Flügge-Strasse in Hamburg-Alsterdoerp.jpg Maybe you did not read the comments below the renaming request? This would be understandable, given the speed of your editing. The comments were made by two native speakers of German who live in Hamburg. We do not think it is a good idea to reinstate spelling errors in proper place names, regardless of the opinion of the original uploader. Furthermore, the attitude of the original Uploader seems to be that they should decide how proper names are best mis-spelled in a language foreign to them. I find that attitude problematic, to put it mildly. What is your opinion? Thank you! —Minderbinder (talk) 07:19, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Minderbinder, personally, I don't hold strong opinions on this issue, especially given my de-0, but generally per COM:FR, "Unless there is a compelling reason not to, uploader requests should be honored. This is a courtesy, not an absolute right, however. If a file mover feels that a proposed new name is disruptive or inappropriate, they can suggest a different name or decline the request." – because of this, I don't usually decline FR1 requests, but I am absolutely fine with anyone reverting my file moves, especially in the case of a misspelling. Hope that clarifies my position! --SHB2000 (talk) 08:51, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello SHB2000,
I did not realize you are a native speaker of German, my mistake. I will keep this is English though, as the uploader may want to follow this conversation too.
Elisabeth-Flügge-Straße (Straßenschlüssel E336) is situated in the quarter (Stadtteil) of Hamburg-Alsterdorf, see:
  • Statistisches Amt für Hamburg und Schleswig-Holstein (Hrsg.): Straßen- und Gebietsverzeichnis der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg 2011, 3., aktualisierte Auflage. Statistikamt Nord, Hamburg 2013, ISSN 0938-636X, S. 50 (Online).
Elisabeth-Flügge-Straße is spelled Elisabeth-Flügge-Straße, there are no two ways about it. Alsterdorf is spelled Alsterdorf, again no room for versions. See also page 5 of the document on all names of quarters (Stadtteile). For the file in question, the spelling is even on the street sign in the picture. There is only one permissible spelling of "Straße" in Standarddeutsch (Hochdeutsch), which is the official language in Germany (and Hamburg). In fact the misspelling of "Strasse" would lead to a comical effect of a short A, as in Gasse. This is simply a typo, a misspelling. These are proper names (Eigennamen) and misspelling them is not a courtesy to the uploader, but simply wrong. Correcting the spelling mistakes in proper names is a compelling reason per COM:FR 3: To correct obvious errors in filenames, including misspelled proper names. The file has been moved back in the meantime, so no need for further action. Thank you. --Minderbinder (talk) 09:48, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
I don't speak German, FTR (as mentioned, my de is a de-0, not a de-N) – I presume it was a misreading (don't worry, it happens to all of us :-)). Thanks for moving them back, though. --SHB2000 (talk) 10:39, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
