Hello, Rbrausse!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi. I noticed you made some distribution maps derived from IUCN. You may be interested in this partnership. Regards, GoEThe (talk) 12:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Hypoxylon_Fragiforme.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Beste Grüße an euch. --Saibo (Δ) 15:02, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trouts[edit]

Hi! For first sorry for my clumsy english. Taxonomy of the Salmo genus is still well confused...I think no two ichthiologists have the same idea about it. I applied the taxonomy of the Kottelat & Freyhof Handbook of freshwater fish of Europe, probably the newest and more updated book about European freshwater ichthyology. For K & F "macrostigma" is limited to Maghreb Mediterranean streams while the southern European "macrostigma-like" trouts are to be classified as Salmo cettii. The S. trutta macrostigma from Corse are considered as conspecific to S. cettii from Sardinia, Sicily or continental Italy. Regards--Etrusko25 (talk) 08:45, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you've uploaded File:Iris_delavayi.jpg and I thought I should draw your attention to a common error. Please give uploaded files meaningful names. Otherwise they are difficult to track and it is hard to tell what the file is about without actually looking at it. I suggest you rename your image with an intuitive name that describes the file itself. Thanks, and happy editing!

This is just an information. New name might be File:unknown Iris.jpg. Renaming will be carried out by a filemover. No action at your side is required. Thank you. RE rillke questions? 13:02, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mimesa equestris[edit]

Excellent travail[edit]

Hello Rbrausse, I just discovered nice world about your work on fr:Utilisateur:Poleta33 talk page.
So I also discovered your excellent work on commons.
I will follow your work and do mine which involves adding Taxonavigation, ReptileDB genus and IUCN (Like this).
Would you do something for me? When you create a category like Category:Lygisaurus sesbrauna, would you mind adding a sortkey ? Even for a monotypic genus.
You just need to do that.
It would avoid me a lot of work.
Thanks in advance,
Best regards Liné1 (talk) 18:10, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This file is outdated and too large for the two rough areas depicted (coming originally from IUCN Red List, I guess). May be you will use not PNG format but JPEG? Bogomolov.PL (talk) 19:43, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The map from the IUCN Red List is very, very rough, you see. It is only one possible variant: if actual systematic status was drastically changed the portions from Russia and Western and Southern Mongolia, from Inner Mongolia in China were described as different species we can agree with this rough map. Do you know something about this? If no, we need a better map, as I've made with File:Meriones unguiculatus range PL.png (see the IUCN Red List map [1] - this is a horror).
  • And about the file type. The PNG file is the best for the common maps without the textured relief raster information when image consists of lines and color filled areas (see my File:Meriones unguiculatus range PL.png). But the DTM model depictions are better in the JPEG format, without any visible digital noise this image in JPEG is 672 KB, but in PNG 2.74 MB, 4 times more. If it's no difference why load larger file? Bogomolov.PL (talk) 20:25, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • I've used Windows Paint (former Paintbrush) to convert the PNG file to JPEG, this software is free and comes with Windows. You open image with Paint, next you save it as a JPEG. The JPEG artifacts are dangerous when we can notice them, but we can not.
    • I will ask my collegues (listed in sources at IUCN Red List page) for the information about taxonomic status and range as my field of interest are the mammals, you see. I was interested in this map as I was observing this species in the numerous points far out the range depicted on your map. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 21:24, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • I have a negative experience with IUCN Red List corrections, I've send the corrections list to the Red List (concerning this map) but with no response and no result.
      • Just now I am preparing the 2012 year report for the grant concerning small mammals of Mongolia but next I will try find an extra time for lizards. Bogomolov.PL (talk) 22:38, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rbrausse, File:Sialia mexicana distribution.png is splendid, but I think it applies to Sialia sialis, not Sialia mexicana. The latter species is familiar to me. Range maps are a major enhancement to species articles. If you need to change a filename, please add Rename to its file page. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 18:44, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hmm, I'm quite sure I used the correct shape... I'll be back in a minute, let me check this. Rbrausse (talk) 18:54, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
okay, you're right and I'm wrong: I actually used the wrong distribution map. Shit :/ Rbrausse (talk) 19:11, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It was easily corrected and no harm occurred. Thank you for checking. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 19:59, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
but but - the embarrassment! :) Confusing mexicana with sialis is such a stupid and avoidable error... I checked the new S. mexicana map thrice: it should be the correct one. Rbrausse (talk) 07:53, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your map is similar to that of Sibley for the species. It is a valued addition to the article. Good work. --Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:34, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
