Re: 2 images that could be deleted

I used CommonsHelper to transfer public domain images from en wikipedia into commons. But right now the CommonsHelper is broken, so that's why not all the information is retrieved and successfully transferred to commons. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:17, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the response. Please be sure to try and transfer all source information along with commons helper when you're using it. And if it doesn't have source information on the original Wikipedia, you probably want to ask the uploader for that too before transferring. Patstuart (talk) 08:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Images uploaded

Re. your message about my images that have been uploaded but not placed in an appropriate page. I'm fully aware of the way commons works. I was just uploading a few more before I put them on the pages. can't do everything at once. Sardaka 08:58, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Yup. I just saw that there were a few from a few days ago that were still unlinked, and I just thought I'd send you a message. Patstuart (talk) 09:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

I've gone through and changed several. Please note that placing the exact URL, as I did, makes the process considerably easier for the reader. It took more time than you might think to find some of them. Patstuart (talk) 21:08, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Image review

Thanks for reviewing Image:KdV2007PurpleMask.jpg. Three other images I uploaded at the same time from the same source were also rejected by the bot: Image:KdV2006TromboneShout.jpg, Image:KdV2006Cat5Dancer.jpg, and Image:KdV2006GreenIndian.jpg. They all seem free licensed at Flickr; I don't know why the bot rejected. Could you kindly take a look, review, and if you see anything I should do differently in uploading which might prevent that problem, let me know? Thanks much. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 22:46, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment and advice

I appreciate the info regarding categorizing images. I was having serious trouble getting the recent maps I created to display properly, so I was holding off on categories until I got them right. Didn't want anyone coming across a photo that wasn't 100%. I'll be sure to add categories to these and the other maps I plan on uploading soon.Dcmacnut 00:46, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Patstuart (talk) 06:03, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

You made the nom back in October, but the uploader only started responding in late January. Don't know if you knew about this, but wanted to bring it to your attention again if you want to track the progress and have any further input. It's not getting much attention I think because it's an old request, so I'm raising it on the Village Pump to get some more input. --BrokenSphere 16:48, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

on comparing differences in images

I read where you were asking questions about this image at FPC. I am not certain what is going on there lately, but I am certain that it is an interesting place to see somewhat interesting graphic manipulations of images.

I have not looked at the image you asked the question about, but if I had been more curious to see the changes, I would have done so by using any graphics application which supports layers and layer modes (Photoshop, PaintShopPro and GIMP are examples of applications that do this). I am only familar with GIMP and could only give precise instruction on how to see the changes via layer modes with this application and I have a biased opinion that since GIMP doesn't do many fancy layers tricks (bells and whistles) it might be easier to use for viewing image differences with. With any of the applications, user ease is something they have all spent a lot of effort on (or claim to have) so I will try to stick to the words to look for in the menus.

Open the original image in the application. Add the changed image as a layer (GIMP is known for being confusing here -- so if you are using GIMP, Edit/Copy the changed image, Edit/Paste to the original image then Layer/Add New Layer which is the step that confuses everyone). As mentioned before, Photoshop and PaintShopPro are professionally designed for users to not get confused by....

Once you have an image window with a stack of image and changed image, all of the applications should have a 'Layers Dialog' of some sort. In that dialog, for each layer is an icon that tells users which layers are visible. An eye is the typical icon (I haven't seen PaintShopPro to know this about it). Toggling that eye icon on the upper layer should be able to show the original layer and the changed layer and your eye will probably be able to see differences between them.

Another often interesting way to see differences between two images is to set the upper layer to Difference Mode. For GIMP and probably Photoshop, this is done in the layers dialog -- a radio (or dropdown) menu gives choices for layer mode.

Here at commons, I requested the deletion of an image after viewing it this way and after comparing the file sizes. If you have made it this far in this impromptu howto, I highly suggest looking at the different versions of this one image: Image:Coney_Island_beach_and_boardwalk_scenes_LOC-2117u-original.jpg and the one that was here before that came from http://www.flickr.com/photos/pingnews/522544318/ . There is a small 'Difference' when seen in Difference mode -- the file made by GIMP (which I saved at 100% quality -- there are millions of things you can do to an image and hundreds of ways to save it per each file format....) is almost half the size. One thing I cannot determine by viewing the differences via layer modes like that is to determine which is better -- I can determine that the much much much smaller size is definately better. Also, I pointed out these two images to you so that at least one other person can be left scratching their head wondering what the file size difference is made of.

Once again, I am really sorry that I reacted so badly to having the uncat images appear in the section that I was working on. It is now long enough ago that I can honestly claim complete sincerity when I write this. Some positive changes have happened since then as well -- a bot that renames images and saves the original upload history on the talk pages!! That is kind of cool to see, at least for me it was.

I can tell you this one thing about software for certain: GIMP is terrible for noise reduction. Noise on images is when there are little multicolored spots where there should be solid or smoothly color graduations. The original horse image that is there now -- it has terrible noise in the shaded parts of the horses side and mane (for an example of noise). I have been impressed with the ability of others to reduce noise on images. I am a good deal more happy with the one application that I know because on most everything else, it seems to hold its own.

I highly recommend watching FPC and QIC for learning about image manipulation. I knew quite a bit about graphics when I first started to watch things there. I honestly know more now -- at their best, they are a place and reason for photographers and manipulators of digital photographs to exchange information and techniques. At their worst, they are competitive and elitist black holes.

I have tried to fit a lot of information into as few words as possible, something I am not known for or good at. If you have any questions, feel free to ask either me or any of the other more professional appearing graphic manipulators that are active at FP. It is interesting stuff and I am all in favor of yet another image viewing snob who knows what to look for!! -- carol 18:44, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the long impromptu message. I will say straight up that I am not extremely experienced with images; I mostly edit on commons just as I would Wikipedia. Any attempts I make to sound legitimate inthe field would be insincere. I still could not tell the difference between your two images, though I looked at them at 100%.

Deleted images

You deleted some images I uploaded a while ago of a fountain at Powerscourt and of Castletown House. I contacted the creators of the photos and got their permission to publish the photos under a creative commons license, so I wanted to know why you deleted them. hi

Thanks for the message regarding the copyright source and author of a pub picture. The pic is from Flickr and is loaded up as I have loaded up dozens before. I realise that is probably a bot that identified it but I cannot see the error. Strangely I have also had an error with source and author on an image called a chapel picture. This one was from Geograph. Can you help with either ? Victuallers 16:27, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

The problem with the first picture, I believe, is that you accidentally copied and pasted the URL for the wrong flickr picture. If you could go back and find the original on flickr, then you'd probably want to go and change the URL of the file here to the correct address. At that point, you would could remove the no source template, and readd the {{Flickrreview}} template. I have fixed the second picture; the problem was that it wasn't from flickr at all, which confused the bot when it saw the template. Patstuart (talk) 16:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt and expert replies. Appreciated. Victuallers 16:40, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Moving images to Commons from other language Wikipedia

It's very difficult to decide the correct license when moving, how to do it more exact? Rico Shen contact... 17:39, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

BTW, is there any Commons administrator also Vietnamese Wikipedia administrator? I think this damn problem should notify to that one. Rico Shen contact... 17:41, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
In this case, I nominated the images for deletion because it looks like the original uploader mismarked them, so it's not your fault, really, other than that I would suggest keeping a careful eye on what you transfer here. Unfortunately, though I cannot find a Vietnamese admin; you could leave a message at COM:VP asking for help in contacting an admin there or a steward; you could also try to leave a note at the Vietnamese Wikipedia, if you can make your way around (I don't know if a Chinese speaker might have more luck than an English speaker at deciphering the text). (no title)

I'm sorry. I thought that I had fixed the images, and that if I cleaned off my talk page, I could pay attention to new errors. In terms of the 'new to wiki' learning curve, I am finding the images to be the hardest. This is ironic, because my background as a scientist led into case law in the area of patents, trademarks, and copyright. Please tell me an expedient method for deleting a troublesome image. I read that 'nominate for deletion' was OK. Alternatively, please delete whatever is causing problems, and I will upload again - with more experience behind me. Doug youvan 03:03, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

In fact, there was no image creating a problem; the problem was that you kept on writing to an image page othat didn't exist anymore: see [2]. About deleting images: you can read up on this at COM:DELETE. Patstuart (talk) 20:07, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

Hola.

Please see the third paragraph on COM:TALK#Can_I_do_whatever_I_want_to_my_own_user_talk_page.3F. There are unfortunately numerous reasons why this is unfeasible, which I can outline to you if you'd like. Patstuart (talk) 20:10, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Seriously!?! You would rather recite guidelines (for which you appear to be reading the words, but missing the intent) than simply have the courtesy and cvility to make one additional click? If you're not logged in there, write your user name and sign with your IP. If you have some other difficulty, just say so when you leave your first note, rather than making pronouncements from the mount. I don't mean to be uncivil, but life is too short for this kind of nonsense. --Skeezix1000 21:30, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
I was placing a template, for which there is no equivalent (or which you wouldn't have known what I was talking about anyway) on en.wp. Additionally, it was a message that would not be relevant to you until you returned to commons, and as such, I might as well have placed it here. Indeed, there are reasons for this guideline, and every one of them applies in this situation. If you find it crucial to get a message, please enable email notification; do not inconvencience commons users for the sake of your preference. Patstuart (talk) 21:44, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Are you the author of the images? Unless you are the author, the copyright belongs to someone else, and we have no right to mark them under a specific license. Please read up on COM:L. Patstuart (talk) 20:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Do you think the picture from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokio_hotel belongs to who? They don't belong to the person who posted it, right? and you haven't deleted it Ic3pr1ncess 21:03, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

In fact, English Wikipedia has different policies than Commons, it allows fair use, which commons (and subsequently several other Wikipedias) do not. However, this is also up for deletion right now, as it is replaceable with a free image. I didn't necessarily make the policies (might want to talk to this man if you disagree, however, I do abide by them. Patstuart (talk) 21:07, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

License for images

The content of these images consists of messages produced from the Mediawiki software together with content from one of the WMF projects. I intend that anyone should be able to update these images; the are to be used by translators of the Mediawiki interface, to locate messages to be translated as they appear to the user/editor. It is not correct to put the contents of the entire screenshot under the WMF copyright. I am happy to point out that if the logo is included, the logo itself is covered by that specific copyright. Is this what you are suggesting? And, if so, what language may I use to do that? Thank you for your help. -- ArielGlenn 20:02, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

a version of flickrreview.js

Hi Patstuart.

I have made a personalized version of your flickr review script, because I prefer to tag invalid images as not valid, but not with copyvio, and try to contact the flickr user in case they agree to change the license. Later, if I don't get any answer, I mark them with copyvio.

So, I have made a version of the script, but it is not working. Could you please take a look at it, just in case you find the errors? my javascript is very bad.

Gracias! -- Fernando Estel ☆ · 星 (Talk: here- es- en) 10:31, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Can you state exactly what seems to be going wrong? By simply looking at the script (I haven't looked more in depth yet), I can't find it. If no extra buttons appear at all, and you're using Firefox, you can try Tools... Error Console and reload the page (Shift-Reload). I've often found easy errors this way (e.g., forgot a right parenthesis when copy-pasting). Given more time, I may try it myself. Patstuart (talk) 06:42, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Hola, Patstuart. Espero tu respuesta. Gracias por anticipado. Un saludo.

Range block

I was considering a range block, but to be honest, I don't have any prior experience with conducting these sort of blocks. I just did some reading, and it looks 65,536 IP addresses would be taken care of in the range block. I guess blocking this IP range for a week or so would do less harm that protecting the Commons page for 2 days from all IPs. You also mentioned that this IP had a history of trolling? Could you link me to some relevant pages? I just want to check it out before I do the rangeblock. Nishkid64 (talk) 19:42, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, you will need to add the contributions range calculator available in preferences...gadgets...Tools for admins and special users. At that point, you can access Special:Contributions/72.76.14.25/16. See also User_talk:Herbythyme/Arc4#Three-revert_rule_and_David_Shankbone. Patstuart (talk) 19:45, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
Actually, it looks like Herby already did the range block: "15:42, 16 April 2008 Herbythyme (Talk | contribs | Block) blocked 72.76.82.0/24 (Talk) with an expiry time of 1 day (anonymous users only, account creation disabled) ‎ (Intimidating behaviour/harassment: stalker ip range) (unblock)" Nishkid64 (talk) 19:48, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
And thanks for the rangeblock info. I've added the gadget. Nishkid64 (talk) 19:50, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Spanish Empire

Hello Patstuart. I'm glad you agree with me. There are also the same problems with Image:Spanish Empire(Total Expansion).jpg, Image:Spanish Empire.png and Image:Spanish colonization of the Americas.png. Cheers! The Ogre 18:55, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Gracias! The Ogre 14:32, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Patstuart (talk) 17:02, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Image:Suvorov_fall.jpg

I need to find who the painter is and where the painting is, which will help to determine if there is a copyright different to that I advised on uploading--1mrg3105 06:21, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes; for the images marked with no source, please give the location where you found this image (e.g., a scan, website, personal photo, postcard, etc.) Patstuart (talk) 06:23, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Its a book scan, but the book doesn't say who painted it, or where the painting is now.
Ok, I updated the source and fixed the date--1mrg3105 07:32, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

What is the story with Image:Hanko_location.gif? Its just a section from a modern map! It can be any map!--1mrg3105 06:26, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but what book does it come from, and does the book give any information on the photo? And with Hanko: where did you find this image? Please give the source. Patstuart (talk) 06:27, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Is transliteration from Russian ok?
The Hanko one came from some online source. It was quicker then myself drawing a circle on the map. Are you saying that someone can own the copyright to the image by cropping a section of a map and drawing a circle on it!--1mrg3105 06:34, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
A transliteration is fine; the name in Russian works well too. However, what is the online source of the map? The person who drew the circle might own the copyright (see {{PD-ineligible}}); the person who drew the underlying map certainly does. Patstuart (talk) 06:47, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Please, you can not be serious! How would you expect me to determine the origin of the map from a 2x3cm snippet! I also refuse to believe that someone drawing a red circle on a commercial map would own copyright to the image. Its just too trivial. The Internet is awash with similar images of people posting directions to locations. it would be {{PD-trivial} IMHO ;o)--1mrg3105 07:20, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Please place the source on the internet where found the image so the license can be determined. And that's exactly the point: this is a commercial map; these companies zealously guard their copyrights. While the internet may be awash with copyright violations, commons strives to move beyond this. Patstuart (talk) 21:13, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
I can't find it again since I don't remember the exact words I used to search for it. Go ahead and delete it, and I will make one of my own. Then I will register it for copyright of my own ;o) I think this copyright thing is a load of crap within the context of the Internet. If people don't want their images used, they should not put it in the public information space.--1mrg3105 05:22, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, a lot of people don't put it on the internet; they have others do so. And intellectual property rights do not go void simply because they are online: just ask Microsoft ;). In any case, make sure you use a free map (e.g., not google maps): you can check out Category:Maps and the subcategories. Patstuart (talk) 05:25, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
What are you talking about!? There is no way to identify copyright ownership from the image. Even if the creator of the image claims such copyright, which is highly unlikely, they can not do so without becoming subject to it themselves since they would have to disclose which atlas was used. What Microsoft? is just making a federal case out of triviality. I needed to show the reader where the place was, and I did. No one is screaming law suit, are they?--1mrg3105 22:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
It does not matter. If you would like to take this to the village pump, feel free. I am 100% sure you will not find any support there. Look, we can't just upload copyrighted stuff and hope no one notices. It runs directly counter to the spirit of commons. Please read up on COM:L and get to understand our policies before uploading any more images. Patstuart (talk) 23:57, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I guess you first need to believe the item is copyrighted! The issue is one of ownership. If I find a wallet, I would certainly try to identify the owner and return it, but if I find a copy of yesterday's newspaper, am I also bound to find an owner, or can I safely use it for my own purposes without expecting legal action to be taken against me? I guess reasonable approach is what I'm looking for. Apparently you will not scrutinise every image I have uploaded. Whatever.--1mrg3105 23:18, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Please read w:free content: "Because the law by default grants copyright holders monopolistic control over their creations, copyrighted content must be explicitly declared free, usually by the referencing or inclusion of licensing statements from within the work." Copyright is automatically extended to all works, and it's been that way for at least a decade. Again, please feel free to ask any questions you have on this issue at help desk. Patstuart (talk) 01:05, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, sure.
For the Men_seated_by_railroad_bed_under_construction_next_to_Balaklava_harbor.jpg I can't find it used online. I have a collection of images going back to 1996 university days sent from people all over the world with usually no source attached. I am fairly sure the photo taken during the Crimean War is in public domain, and its owner is most certainly deceased. Doesn't mean someone doesn't have copyright, but I have no idea how to find that out. If you do, please advice. What is the problem of using it until the owner challenges the use, and then asking for exemption?
Please don't ask me to read policy and guideline. I don't want to be sick again. I just edit, not bureaucratise.--1mrg3105 01:24, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
For that image, it might be enough to state that the image was sent to you a decade ago. If it was the Crimean War, then it is a reasonable assumption the author died 70 years ago, and it is in the public domain: {{Pd-old}}.
I don't ask you to read policies to be a pain in the rear end; I ask you to read policies because they're the crux of Commons. You don't have to read the whole thing, but it is not wikilawyering to uphold our most basic policies. With all due respect, I just saw someone blocked indefinitely for having a cavalier attitude to public domain images, and I've seen people blocked for less. Please do not upload any images which aren't in the public domain. I don't mean to be confrontational, but this is important to our rules. Patstuart (talk) 01:34, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Alfred Keller

As with many other images, this one came from a forum. I have no idea who owns it, but have found it used on a website, so they may know, I hope your Portuguese is better then mine.--1mrg3105 23:28, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

--Feliks 03:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Saludos. Patstuart (talk) 03:37, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Pat, I'm posting here instead instead of there since my question is more about your motivation than qualification for requesting admin.-tools. The question is: are you really sure this is a good idea, as getting new tools is probably not the best prescreption if you want to limit your own wikitime. I'm asking in light of these [3] [4] edits. If you feel this question is totally irrelevant, feel free to disregard or even revert it. If you feel the question and your answer is indeed relevant, feel free to copy my comment to the RfA subpage. Regards, Finn Rindahl 11:42, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

deprecated function in your monobook.js

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Bug in category generation

In this edit existing categories were removed by the script. Superm401 - Talk 22:48, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Note that User:Kelly put them back manually before I made my edit. Superm401 - Talk 22:52, 14 July 2008 (UTC)
When the script comes across a category page that isn't blank, it prompts the user to continue or not. Apparently, Kelly clicked yes, and any category that were on the new page but not the old one disappeared. Nevertheless, I will try to include this in version 2.0; you see I don't really edit with this account much anymore, so I haven't been working on it. Perhaps I will return to edit more often some time. Patstuart (talk) 18:52, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Flickrreview script

Hi Patstuart, I know you probably get this alot, but the Flickrreview script from Commons:Flickr images/reviewers that I added to User:Cirt/monobook.js doesn't seem to be working for me at the moment, though it was working before - any ideas/help? Thanks for creating it, Cirt (talk) 10:35, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

I've tried a few pages with it, and it seems to be working fine for me. You might want to refresh your cache after you include the script: if you're on Firefox, that would be Ctrl-Shift-R. And just in case, I've also slightly changed the text to place in your monobook file on the flickr review page: [6]. Patstuart (talk) 18:55, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
Will try that out, thank you very much. Cirt (talk) 20:08, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Notice of namespace-rename "Image" -> "File"

Dear user, the MediaWiki developers recently announced that the "Image:" namespace is going to be renamed to "File:". "Image:" will remain an alias. The canonical namespace name wgCanonicalNamespace will change from "Image" to "File".

I noticed that you use wgCanonicalNamespace in either your monobook.js page or a JavaScript file in your userspace (check this list).

Please check and replace all occurrences of

wgCanonicalNamespace == "Image"

with

wgNamespaceNumber == 6

to ensure that your scripts keep working. Thanks! --Dschwen (talk) 18:41, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Flickrreview.js

Hello Pat!

I have recently added your flickreview script to monobook, but it is working not that constantly good as i wished to. Do you have an idea what could be the problem? Don't understand me wrong, I am really excited of your tool and it's very useful, too. That's why I miss it sometimes ;-)
Best regards, High Contrast (talk) 23:23, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Can you describe the problem in more detail? You can try two things:
1) Make sure you refresh your browser in full! If you use Firefox, hit Shift-Ctrl-F5. If you use another browser... well I don't know, google it.
2) If you are still experiencing problems, could you describe it in more detail? I would like to help out. It might help if you could open in Firefox, open Tools..Error Console and read the error messages. Patstuart (talk) 05:17, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Browser refreshing was done by me enough often. It did not change anything - it still does not work. There is no error listed in the firefox error console - just a few warning concerning Stylesheet for the CategoryTree extension, an AJAX based gadget. Couriously sometimes the flickrreview tool works, but only if someone tagged it with "no permission" (example here). What else do you want to know? --High Contrast (talk) 20:15, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
