Three-revert rule and David Shankbone[edit]

Hey Herby, does the Three-revert rule from WP apply here at Commons? I see that editor David Shankbone has reverted a comment, on WJBscribe's talkpage, three times in less than twenty-four hours: [1], [2], [3].

Should this incident be reported at COM:AN, COM:AN/A, or COM:AN/V?

Please advise. Thank you, Honey...oops, I mean, Herby. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.76.7.247 (talk • contribs) at 11:24, 22 Mar 2008 (UTC)

Stop the trolling or I will block you (& 3 RR does not apply on Commons nor would it ever to such edits) --Herby talk thyme 12:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pity. I thought I'd ask you, Hon, since you have experience here and at WP, where you're an "Admin open to recall."

What about the actions of WJBscribe in this matter? Should I report his presiding over COI and BLP violations at Michael Lucas (director) to any or all of the forums listed above, or others, or both?

BTW, is the term "trolling" Wikispeak for "followup?"

Blocked for two hours. abf /talk to me/ 12:53, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blocked?? Yeah, right. ABF, I want Herby's reply -- go block something else.

How to block this IP without blocking all of north New Jersey[edit]

  • Herby and ABF: Wikipedia found a way to block this IP range without blocking the entire range. If you look at this thread on ANI, the message by Wknight tells you the range to block to at least make it more of a pain for the person to have to continually reset their modem until they find an open protocol. I suggest we do that for about a month here. --DavidShankbone 13:37, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whizkids Herby and ABF: apparently that does not work as I'm here, and I have been there, too.

David: if only you could stay off "substances" for about a month (how long has it been since you've been without for a month, since you started?), and undergo psychiatric help in the same period, to start. David C. Miller, you have been "found out." I know who you are and I know what you've done -- and you're not getting away with it. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.76.11.104 (talk • contribs) at 14:06, 22 Mar 2008 (UTC)

In general trolls are to be ignored as far as I am concerned. I have a life - you may wish to get one yourself I guess. In passing you are of course welcome to report anyone you like anywhere you wish to, might be amusing I suppose --Herby talk thyme 14:14, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Herby, it's troubling that you find amusement in somebody wanting to report possible Admin vio's of BLP and COI.
My involvement on Wikipedia is very limited. Take issues you have there to whatever page you want there. You probably know your way around better than me --Herby talk thyme 15:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, I probably do, given that I have successfully edited despite amateurish "blocks" while you have unsuccessfully evaded recall there. That's why you're here, right? No matter. Luck you.
Hey Herby - it did work on WP - but if it doesn't, that IP range may not be as active on Commons as it is on WP, and so you may just want to block the whole range. Wikinews is prepared to do so, as well. Obviously, WP has other considerations. The IP editor has become a running joke in the IRC chat rooms. --DavidShankbone 14:19, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Herby - it did work (even though I've edited there) - but if it doesn't (if it doesn't? IT DOESN'T, I'm here, aren't I, and I've been there). Shankbone talks through his ass -- that's what happens when you're on "substances" non-stop. Who gives a crap what a bunch of losers hanging on IRC think, Miller? Besides, the joke, in the end, will be on you. Don't walk around like you're safe. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.68.29.23 (talk • contribs) at 15:24, 22 Mar 2008 (UTC)
Yawn - keep re-setting that modem. lol. --DavidShankbone 15:36, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As for you, Miller, what's this about re-setting a modem? Do you mean turn it on to go online and then turn it off afterward? What's unusual about that? I usually turn it off at lunch, too -- is that unusual as well? And sometimes I take a long lunch -- how will you make all this fit your theory?
Miller alias Shankbone, laugh now, while you can. You will pay for what you've done. Revenge is sweet. It may not happen today or tomorrow or next month or next year even, but when it happens it'll be swift and fierce. You'll never know when and you will not know what hit you. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.76.78.174 (talk • contribs) at 17:46, 22 Mar 2008 (UTC)
  • Miller, alias Shankbone, alias LSD (Law School Dropout): I don't appreciate your edits of my comments. And I don't know what you're so giddy about. You must think that the threat diminishes with the passing of time, only the day of reckoning is that much closer. But you continue being giddy, continue going about as if nothing is going to happen to you. Don't be vigilant; don't look over your shoulder. Don't be suspicious of people you meet. My revenge will be even sweeter, that way. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.68.31.188 (talk • contribs) at 11:43, 25 Mar 2008 (UTC)

Hi Herby. When I say "stay away from my pictures" that's means that they shall not delete pictures for witch I have give licens permision to Wikipedia. Due to some overzealous deleting on my part, found this - users are clearly related. Would you take care of this as you see fit? All images by this person are likely suspect, I think. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 03:09, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep - I'm going for it being the "same" person. However given that one edited in 2006 & nothing since and the other just recently there would be nothing worth looking at I think. Questionable pics (licensewise & "valid"?) maybe or just a "fresh" start one? Worth watching for sure - cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:52, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Stuff[edit]

I don't know about the category nonsense. I have seen discussion about the use "of" or "in" in this context before (possibly on the village pump), but don't know offhand what was said. I'm not sure if either is entirely satisfactory to be honest. I mean how would you categorise the Tamar? Is it a river of Devon? Sort of I suppose. Is it a river in Devon? The vast majority of it is technically in Cornwall, but there a few bits upriver where both banks are in Devon. Putting it in the Rivers of England category is accurate (if you ignore the "Cornwall isn't English" POV), but vague. Thankfully that doesn't apply to the Plym or Dart or Erme or... In answer to your question I'd say the "of" form is marginally better - due to consistency with the other categories on Commons and the equivalent on enwiki. Do what you think's right ;)

On the picture of the Plym's head, I can't really much point to uploading it at present. w:River Plym would be the logical place to use the image, but the article isn't mature enough for it. Hmm.. That gives me an idea! w:List of Dartmoor tors and hills - lots of stubs in need of writing there! And lots of pics needed too :D--Nilfanion 15:29, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bad name[edit]

I was wondering if you could take a look at this image bad name case. The image at Image:Báb.jpg is a reproduction of the one at Image:Sayyid Kazim Rashti.jpg. In the 1800s the picture in question was printed in a single book as stated to be the en:Báb, but it is really is en:Sayyid Kazim as stated in Balyuzi, H.M. (1973) The Báb: The Herald of the Day of Days, Oxford, UK: George Ronald, pp. 16 ISBN 0853980489 "Hájí Siyyid Kázim-i-Rashtí - This photograph was mistakenly identified as one of the Báb by Nicolas in his book Seyyed Ali Mohammed dit le Báb." Regards, -- Jeff3000 15:32, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. It's just that the badname list is quite large, and there is a user who is wrongly using the incorrect image name and adding the photo to the wrong page in the English Wikipedia. Regards, -- Jeff3000 18:15, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcomes[edit]

Saw this - I have asked that the welcome template be added automatically when the talk page is redlinked - a possible solution. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 19:40, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I'm going to start something somewhere about this soon. Given the multilingualism of Commons I'd like to see a "welcome" placed before warnings (& even worse blocks). As you know I have no problem with the block button :) but I'd prefer to think that people understand why they are being blocked. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:43, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Meneer Piem en de Kalkoen[edit]

Hi Herbythyme. I wonder why you removed the picture belonging to the article "Meneer Piem en de Kalkoen"? (a Dutch childrenbook from the eighties in Holland) Can you please tell me why? Duinoord 12:05, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herby. Thanks for your message. I didn't know that the picture was tagged with copyright violations. I know that the publisher "Kosmos" doesn't exist anymore since the end of the eighties, so it's impossible to get any approval from them. Anyway, I don't see a problem in publishing the picture so if you don't mind maybe I will request for undeletion. Or is it better to upload it again so that the copyrightviolation tag is not there anymore? Hope to hear from you. By the way, do you speak dutch as well? Because I'm dutch, it would be easier to discuss.Duinoord 12:45, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The range block does not appear to work... :( Finn Rindahl 13:16, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you take a look at my block log you will see it does - the "72.76." bit remains constant, the variable is the next digit. Now I could block 72.76.0.0/16 but that is a lot of IPs and could mean some collateral damage. So they reboot the router (quite a lot of times now :)) to find an IP they can edit from & then when they do I block 72.76.*.0/24 depending on where they actually edit from. OK - marginally more work for us (but we are still blocking quite a few IPs (256)) but the idea of blocking many more is something I not wildly excited about doing. If we have to 76.76.0.0/20 is fairly safe & will I think block all the range but it is 4000 IPs. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:28, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okey dokey, sounds like you know what you're doing (I'm not really suprised by that...). As it is, it's more work for them to reboot that it is for us to do the occasional revert&block. But I'm still getting quite annoyed by this nonsense >:o Finn Rindahl 13:37, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind help one week ago. I found Image:Melbourne City Skylines.jpg and Image:Melbourne RMIT University City (Statue of Francis Ormond).jpg have been successfully deleted since you left your message in my talk page. I am wondering when the other two images would be deleted. e.g.Image:Chevron Renaissance Village Style Open Paizza.jpg, which has an incorrect file name and a duplicate of Image:Chevron Renaissance Village-Style Piazza.jpg and Image:Chevron Renaissance Shopping Mall & Apartment Complex in Gold Coast HWY.jpg is the duplicate of Image:Chevron Renaissance Shopping Mall & Apartment Complex in GC HWY.jpg. Got in touch with Bryan on IRC, the result was: Deleted --Kanonkas(talk) 13:11, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Image Express way.jpg[edit]

This image was put under deletion log The picture was taken by Mark D Martin( a user of Flickr). I sent him a Flickr Mail some days ago to ask his permission if I could use his Pic. He replyed by saying that he would love to help Wikipedia. So I posted it, but one of the reviewers( the people who check if the image is under permission or not) have put it under deletion log.Can u please remove the detion plee after checking the licensing. Please Help, and Do REPLY --Manaspunhani 21:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - firstly you should ask the admin who deleted the picture if they are prepared to undelete it. If they will not then you need to request undeletion here giving your reasons. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:56, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Image Express way.jpg[edit]

Its okay now. anyway thanks Manaspunhani 21:34, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see you removed my CSD, no problem I would have given it a chance too. If no content comes up today, would you then mind delete it later? If some content comes up eg, media then leave it :) Best regards --Kanonkas(talk) 07:23, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the analogous page to this one under Commons being deleted for my username Doug youvan 07:30, 5 May 2008 (UTC)?[reply]

Some help[edit]

I was wondering if I could get some help of yours. In the late 1800s there was a book published which contained an image which the author identified with the en:Bab. All the newer sources including Balyuzi, H.M. (1973) The Báb: The Herald of the Day of Days, Oxford, UK: George Ronald, pp. p. 16 ISBN 0853980489 which reproduces this image and states "Hájí Siyyid Kázim-i-Rashtí - This photograph was mistakenly identified as one of the Báb by Nicolas in his book "Seyyed Ali Mohammed dit le Báb"." state that the original book was wrong, and it is actually a picture of en:Sayyid Kazim. In Iran where Baha'is are persecuted, the image is used incorrectly, and now there are some Persian Wikipedia editors who are trying to change the name of the image to serve their purposes. The images in question on Commons are Image:Sayyid Kazim Rashti.jpg and Image:Seyed Ali Mohammed Bab.jpg. I was wondering if you could help in this Regards -- Jeff3000 14:32, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you take a look at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard#Sayyid_Kazim. The previous admin who acted wants another admin to look into it this time [7]. Regards, -- Jeff3000 16:17, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Xena[edit]

Does this ring a bell to you? We also got a phony permission on OTRS from someone with the same first name and this Flickr account (which curiously stopped working now, after a "We're not accepting that, sorry" reply two days ago...). You know what, I don't believe in coincidences. Patrícia msg 10:28, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yep - Lawless sock. Blocked, nuked pages - now for the images I guess - thanks (& the vote!) --Herby talk thyme 10:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hum - well I've left some that are not obvious copyvios - any thoughts? --Herby talk thyme 10:40, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, I'd nuke everything. Look at the metadata of this one, for example. Patrícia msg 10:43, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops - missed that - all gone now! Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:46, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! It becomes a matter of trust, really: even if some images look like they could be ok, are we trusting this uploader? It's a hard call, but...
About the vote: I was going through birdy's contribs yesterday, after deleting a couple of speedydeletion-tagged pages (tagged by her), and thought "she could have the tools here". Then today, surprise! Well, hopefully in a week this becomes reality ;). Cheers, Patrícia msg 10:58, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have been working on her for a while now :) One to watch in my view (in the good sense of the word!). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:04, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(reset) Looks good! I have been nagging this guy for ages, he's not even replying me any longer when I ask about adminship on Commons ;P. He has been taking care of images on pt.wikipedia since, well, ever. He knows his stuff but stubbornly refuses to be an admin. Can't blame him, it's not very well payed ;). Patrícia msg 11:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I do tend to prefer ones who don't want to be admins (at least not desperately!). It is only about having some extra tools to do the work - why should one person tag a page and another delete if the first person can do both. This one is one of Finn's btw --Herby talk thyme 11:34, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Source Code[edit]

On images that I have generated, should I also be dropping my source code into the discussion page of those images? The intent is to describe the image in a manner that will survive a web site such as [[8]] - which might not be around forever. (The code is owned by me, so there is no IP / copyright issue.) Doug youvan 14:10, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I am not aware that other generated images have source code at all so I guess maybe a note that it is available might be all that is needed? Many thanks --Herby talk thyme 14:37, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(Yeah, I prefer pics vastly over that other stuff.) So, here is an example - from another contributor - that we can use for this "code discussion". One person might see beauty and another person might see a principle in fluid dynamics. They are both happy with the image as is. A third person, possibly in the field of fluid dynamics, might want to know what is underneath the image in terms of computer code, and ask: Was this years of proprietary work or is there a public-domain, canned program somewhere that could be used to make a similar animated gif in five minutes flat? Let's say the latter is true, but only referenced to a website. Hypothetically, that website disappears ten years from now. From that perspective, it would seem that at least a terse summary of the algorithms should have been deposited - contributor’s option - on the image discussion page. So, placing computer code on a discussion page for a computer-generated image falls between two very different extremes: On the one hand, it is clutter. On the other hand, it enables future work. For now, I'd like to place a limited amount of key computer code behind some of my computer-generated images. Is that a policy issue, or should I proceed? Doug youvan 15:24, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Give me the wonderful images here (mostly) over some content in other places any day! I'm no expert Doug so I think it would be best to post at the help desk - that way you should get people with some better idea on the specific subject. I understand the issues but I'm happy to admit when I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to give a definitive answer. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:32, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Moving over there, thanks. Doug youvan 15:45, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, just do it! It's certainly a good idea! you could try using the <source lang="..."> tag to get sourcecode formatting. Lupo 15:48, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments to Rocket[edit]

Please do not try and pull rank on any user here - how long you have been here is of interest. However equally you have been here long enough to know than length of service does not equate to being senior in any form. If you disagree take it to an admin board or other forum. Do not wheel war here on Commons - I assure you it will be unwise --Herby talk thyme 12:04, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He was the person pulling a rank on me lecturing me that this isn't wikipedia. Removing protection from license templates have legal implications, everyone knows this. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:08, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
This isn't Wikipedia. Rocket is one of the most active admins currently. Have a dialogue in a moderate form. Try and work collaboratively. If you can't manage that take it to a public forum.
The statement You shouldn't lecture me weather or not this is wikipedia. I have been around on commons for well over 3 years now. looks to me as though you are implying either power or seniority. Please do not do that - I have a feeling that the community would not be happy --Herby talk thyme 12:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Keep up the one sided warnings, see where that will take us. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:15, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Back off please - I was writing something for Rocket's page but was interrupted - take it to the community now please --Herby talk thyme 12:20, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Back off to where? If a single vanal is reading this we may be looking at a possible real-world legal dispute. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:27, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
As is often the case your approach comes over as rather aggressive to me and in this instance towards me. I advised you that length of time in Commons does not equate to being senior in any way - you are well aware of that. So you then have a go at me (while I am typing something up for Rocket's page). Please assume good faith & keep en wp ways out of Commons.
I have said already - take it to a public board to get the input of others. You & Rocket don't agree - don't war - get some other input --Herby talk thyme 12:40, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aggressive? I wasn't the person removing protection of other people without a discussion. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:43, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Your tone to me is aggressive in your interaction with me when I am merely try to get some discussion going. Bear in mind it is not how you see yourself but the impact you have on others. You are welcome to confine this discussion to your talk page as I am obviously watching it however I am will not be online now for a while & feel that your efforts would be best directly to solving the problems that we have rather than anything else - thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:58, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am "aggressive" in a sense that I do not want the foundation sued over a mere temporary disagreement. Issue can be discuss while we are not in such a risk. -- Cat ちぃ? 13:07, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Why did you remove my bot flag request? CoolGirl 14:12, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Listen to me![edit]

I admire Common's practices and policies very much! I don't disregard them. Look at my contributions and you will see that I have made many contributions to Commons. I think it is really fun contributing to Commons and I want a bot flag so that I can contribute even more to Commons. Don't you understand? I am working very hard and you don't appreciate it! CoolGirl 15:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I never intended to commit a copyright violation. It was a simple mistake! Well what can I say? It wasn't my intention. I am only trying to help Commons. I am already familiar with the policies and rules. My goal is to contribute to this site and to get a bot flag! I really want to be involved in Commons. At least, I'm trying! Admin advice[edit]

Hi. I finally took the courage to deal with some newer or older deletion requests, esp. categories. Can you please revise my admin actions from today and advise me if I haven't properly decided or done anything... I just can't get rid of the feeling that I miss doing something important... (If you prefer, answer me here, I watch your talk). Thank you in advance :-) --Spiritia 16:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You are mad not really :) I can see nothing wrong on the ones I looked at. To me being an admin means using your judgement with care & thought and being prepared to admit to being wrong - if you do that then you will be fine.
However - we all have our preferences and I will deal with speedies and things quite happily. Anytime I've tried to deal with a deletion request I seem to have got it wrong!
Please keep up the work you do - watch, listen & try and help where you can - you will not be doing much wrong I assure you. Feel free to ask if you have anything specific you would like me to look at - thanks --Herby talk thyme 17:55, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yay, thanks :-) I was particularly worried not to miss some steps from the request archival process or other procedural aspects. Thanks again for the support. Spiritia 21:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I've also seen some more images that probably aren't needed in the Category. I'll probably get round to removing some later and adding more important images. By the way is Plymouth and Torbay including in Devon? bsrboy 17:42, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Paris Jefferson[edit]

Because you withdrew the image Paris Jefferson of Wikipedia's page about Paris? (Renee Lawless 22:11, 14 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

Sigh. Blocked, reverted, all images deleted... quack quack. Cheers, Patrícia msg 22:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Review[edit]

Hello again Herby! I was wondering if you could review me, look what I should do, what I've done wrong, etc. If you don't mind of course. Thank you, best regards. --Kanonkas(talk) 05:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've given this a fair bit of thought & I'm going to skip this. This is a wiki & we all do as we see fit. Because I do something & do it in my way does not make me right or wrong compared to others. Sensibly - some things I probably do ok on, some others might look at and say "hey why does he do it like that" - answer - "that is the way I do it"! Look around - copy others who seem to know what they are doing - but remember you may find a better way yourself - you will be fine.
Judging constructive work here will never be easy I guess. However it made me think a bit so when this is not red you may care to take a look at it. I would stress it is not for your benefit but to clarify some thoughts I have - however it may be of interest. I'd hope to get it done this week. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:30, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok, thanks for your advice. Welcome back Herby ;) --Kanonkas(talk) 13:50, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's done - feel free to take a look & see if anything helps - regards & thanks! --Herby talk thyme 12:58, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Some days ago, I found this template which was in my opinion totally useless. It was just transcluding the (nonexisting) Template:Kennedy Space Center Launch, nothing else. I checked the history and it seems it was more or less a test, nothing more. So, I tagged it with Template:Speedydelete. If I interpretate this log correctly, you restored the page after it was deleted by Zirland and you removed my deletion request with the comment “(trying)”.

I don't really understand this – the template has no use. I asked ABF about this and he just deleted the page… could you perhaps explain why we need this (obviously broken) template? --Church of emacs 13:01, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can explain it easily in one sense of the word. Tagging the template put some valid material into the speedily deletable category (images of User:Gnangarra among other). As to why that was I have no idea but undeleting the "useless" template took the images back out from the deletion category. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:33, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... I am sorry, but I still cant see the sense... I do not really understand what you pointed out :S But if the template is necessary, please undelete it. Regards, abf /talk to me/ 11:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I agree completely - however valid images were in the speedy cat before I undeleted the template & were gone from it when I undeleted it. That is all :) --Herby talk thyme 11:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for this clarification --Church of emacs 12:46, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
