Hello Robert

Hello Robert, Because of your journey to Rhine-Westphalia, where you shurely saw some tropical insects too, I made 4 pics of a Lucanidae, which I got as thank-you-present from a Swiss coleopterologue, whom I showed the Goulandris-Museum for Natural History in Kifissia, Athens. I have no idea, which country or even continent it comes from. Perhaps you or some friend of you knows. At the time they are only in the , not on a side. Hope, you had a good catch --Siga (talk) 13:57, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

I found it out myself (with the help of specialists). It is Rhaetulus didieri--Siga (talk) 19:13, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes.We identified it as didieri too. It seems to be rare and confined to Malaya.Nice addition Notafly (talk) 11:46, 17 March 2009 (UTC) PS. I will soon be uploading Coleoptera images from Museum Wiesbaden.

There doesn't seem to be any option to delete images, just to nominate for deletion - is this because en-wiki admin rights don't work on Commons? Also, it would be very helpful to rename files by moving them, especially where the original description is wrong or imprecise. Is there any reason why files must be re-uploaded to give them a new name, rather than just moved like articles are? Thanks for any advice you can give, Jimfbleak (talk) 17:46, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I recently red again "Ravageurs- récits sur les insectes nuisibles à l'agriculture", where Uncle Paul talks with his nephew Jules... delicious! To be red to children before they go to bed? About photos of my collecting locality...Good idea, but I think that I first have to make progresses in the categories of my pics. With sunbeams from Provence, Hélène.--H. Re:

I Notafly, I'm afraid, I've studied Entomology at the university mainly about insects wich have great importance in agriculture. But I'm not an expert as taxonomist, so I can't determine most flies without a good set of keys and a good documentation. Since december I'm writing the articles about Nematocera families in it.wiki using references from documentation available in many websites about diptera. After I read monographies and scientific articles which I found in the Web about a family, I get the knowledge which there wasn't before. In fact before my works in Wikipedia, I knew well about diptera only some Tephritid mediterranean species and I know very little and generic about most flies families (nothing about Sphaeroceridae). So I'm studying now!

I draw the diagrams of wings venation after I read available documentation such as descriptions of families or other taxa and new species in scientific publications and observing the photos or other drawings when are available. My diagrams are not very precise but can be useful to understand the terminology used in the articles texts in it.wiki and to get an idea of wing morphology, because in more flies the wing veins are important to recognize many families or subfamilies. Note that dipterists are too specialized in a few families because the determination of species is very hard and require years of experience: sometimes can be sufficient details as antennae, thorax bristles or wing veins, but often they need microscopic exams of genitalia or citologic exams! That's impossible for a dummy as me. Greetings --gian_d (talk) 21:46, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

my address is giandessi at gmail dot com , but I can't receive big files such as CD's: my Internet connection has traffic restrictions because is a satellite connection with Digiweb. Over 2 GB of traffic per month in downstream the speed is set to 128 kbps. Try to send me the photos of scatocerids and some work about them, I'll try to determine them --gian_d (talk) 12:21, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

German stamp set "Wagner"

Hi notafly, I've great news, I'll soon get a hires scan with 1200dpi of the complete set "mint" of the Wagner stamp from 1933. But please give me a bit of time to enhance and upload these scans. cu NobbiP 10:41, 15 April 2009 (UTC) P.S. is it right that your talk page is categorized in "unidentified insect" page?

very small flies

hi robert, i think i narrowed these down to Cecidomyiidae (-iinae?); they were really tiny, and four of them were probably laying eggs into a cleft of a grass stem. no idea if these can be determined, but i was also wondering what's protruding from the one in front, i have no anatomical explanation for this. cheers! --Sarefo (talk) 22:22, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi, do you think you can provide the full name for this? The only "I. rubecula" in Lepidoptera I can find is Itaballia rubecula which isn't a skipper. Koruthaialos rubecula is a skipper but it doesn't look like this. Thanks. Rocket000 (talk) 21:11, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Commanster pics

hi robert,

i'm right now uploading the about 2.900 pics from James Lindsey's Commanster site that weren't included in the first batch i did in 2007/2008. Now the hard part starts, to categorize them, probably by hand :( so, the hymenoptera pictures should be there now, but aren't yet categorized or in the proper gallery pages. cheers! -Sarefo (talk) 14:57, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hy Notafly, I'm afraid: I'm very interest, but I have a too slow connection and cannot download big files because the provider lowers the bandwidth when the peak of traffic exceeds 2 GB per month and it's very difficult to keep this limit. If I give you my home address can you send me the CD by mail? I'll pay you the shipping, of course.

If you are agree about that contact me at giandessi(at)gmail(dot)com with instructions about how pay the shipping, I'll give you my address, but please do not send me big files by email! Thanks

M4 or Cu1?

Hi Notafly. I have a doubt:. When I drew the diagrams of Nematocerous wing venation, I found that some Authors handle the vein 9 as fourth branch of media (M4) and others as first branch of anterior cubitous (Cu1 or CuA1). I don't remember, but I read that in the evolution of wing venation, CuA1 and M4 are fused. In Hennig (1973) I found a confirm about that.

I think that the choose between CuA1/Cu1 and M4 depends from Authors and the apparent incongruence of nomenclature within the Diptera families is a false problem. But I think is correct in Wikimedia projects use a single interpretation, so I chose to call this vein as M4 or M3+4 in all families of Diptera. This follows Amorim & Rindal (2007) (Phylogeny of Mycetophiliphormia, with proposal of the subfamilies Heterotrichinae, Ohakuneinae, and Chiletrichinae for the Rangomaramidae (Diptera, Bibionomorpha), Zootaxa 1535). So, as you can see, I handle the base of CuA1 as m-cu (Amorim & Rindal) and the dm-cu crossvein as medial crossvein (m-m). But I've seen that in Brachycerous descriptions most recent Authors call those veins as CuA1 or Cu1, m-cu and dm-cu, instead of the nomenclature which I use mantaining an uniformity with lowers Diptera. M4 is used only in old works.

What I have to do? Can I use an one nomenclature scheme in all Diptera or use of different schema in Brachycera is better? --gian_d (talk) 05:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Which depends on you. But add a note to each file description for clarity.Perhaps an explanation page on Diptera wing venation would be a good idea. But it is a lot of work and technical for Wiki.atb Notafly (talk) 08:25, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, explanation is a good idea, thanks. Wiki.atb? I don't know, what does it mean? --gian_d (talk) 08:47, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

New version

Hello Robert, thanks for the compliment. I am just repairing my old photos. At the time, I took them, I did not know how to treat digital pics. The only problem: If I upload a new version, I have to wait at least two days, (often more than a week) until the new version replaces the old one in Commons. Can you do something about that? (To purge does not help). If you can not help, never mind. I can cope. Greetings --Siga (talk) 20:47, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

Check out the source code of the species categories you created. The bit behind the pipe symbol "|" will determine the sorting order in the genus category.

(Usually one should use capital letters - e.g. [[Category:Boloria|Frigga]] in this case - to make it easier to read on the genus page. But as I did this on-the-fly, I didn't change all the species categories.) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 17:41, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

No, use lowercase please. That seems to be what was agreed upon on here. Rocket000 (talk) 19:24, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Actually, in this case the categorization done by {{Lepidoptera}}, so there's no need to add a category manually. Rocket000 (talk) 19:28, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

Unsure determination

Is this Xixuthrus? Mispelled on file [1] Robert aka Notafly (talk) 21:32, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

No, it is Macrotoma (Bandar) pascoei [2]. If you know the locality, it is possible identify the subspecies too.--Vitalfranz (talk) 07:18, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
Many thanks. The pascoei specimen is from Sumatra. Now please one more [3]. I am in Italy each year. If I can take photos of any Cerambycidae in Rome Civico Museum of Zoology or in La Specola you may need I will do my best.Or next year send you some lists. Many thanks again Robert aka Notafly (talk) 09:41, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, if it comes from Sumatra, it belongs to the typical subspecies pascoei pascoei (Lansberge, 1884). The other Cerambycid is a female of Enoplocerus armillatus (Linnaeus, 1767) [4]. Thank you for the rest... unfortunately, I will have no chance to meet you in Italy since I'm living in Luxembourg... but I wish you a nice trip there!--Vitalfranz (talk) 11:48, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Many thanks to you for the identification, and for some category change I've seen you've made ! I will ask for renaming the picture.

I you have time, you can watch there or there fore more identifications (but I guess you've already seen these pages...). Sincerely, --Gagea (talk) 21:55, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Do you now if this species is dimorphic, and if it is possible to know if it's a male or a female ? Thanks in advance, --Gagea (talk) 22:05, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks you for your correction and for the link. However, I can't understand the way the species are organized in the book, and I can't find the species of the Lasaia genus... I don't have so much time right now (and I'm not on my own computer), but I will check the identification as soon as I can. --Gagea (talk) 17:25, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Green Beetle

Hi, thanks for your quick response. The length was around 10 mm, but that's a very rough guess after more than half a year. The pictures were taken in Stuttgart, Germany in an urban garden. --Pjt56 (talk) 21:50, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Meanwhile I've looked at other Commons pictures of C.h., on many of them the beetle seems to sit on a peppermint plant. I'm not 100% sure but I think this was also the case with my specimen. Does this help to make the identification more secure? --Pjt56 (talk) 08:56, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Please don't blank pages

Hi Notafly,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Category:Hypatema rhomboidella on Commons. I asume you meant for the page to be deleted, but blanking the page is not the right way to do this. I'd like to strongly recommend to use {{speedy| type reason here }} and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regularly for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed. Thanks again. 00:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)–Krinkletalk

Hello Notafly, today I have added a small video to the german wikipedia article Pipunculidae. So I also visited this article in English language. I noticed the picture description in the taxobox is "Eudorylaus sp. Male and female in copula", however on commons this photo is described as "Pipunculidae Diptera" only. If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Uploads on your behalf in the past

Dear Robert, I have just tried to list out all the images I uploaded on your behalf in the past. I fear that someone might come along and delete them since I am not the copyright owner on these:

It would be best to note below that you confirm (for the benefit of third-parties or administrators) that you are the copyright owner of the above images and that you had (via email) asked for my help in uploading them under the creative commons licenses indicated. That would ensure that these images do not get deleted in the future. Shyamal (talk) 06:36, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks Robert. I asked here and they say you need to send an email with the above list of files mentioned in the format below. I just found that I had missed some more files, so I added a statement on the year in which the uploads were made. Shyamal (talk) 01:44, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Merci pour ce message d’encouragement. Je connais ton travail sur ce sujet. Je commence seulement à mieux maîtriser les photographies d’insectes. Je devrais bientôt pourvoir doubler la définition. Re:Atissa

Hi Robert. No, I didn't see it, I wrote an article about Atissa in it.wiki but I didn't link any image. But there was some important changes: I left the wiki projects because I cannot watch more that many users have other purposes instead those of wiki projects. In it.wiki (but I think in other projects also) there are too many users which use Wikipedia with ideological political or commercial purposes until get false or falsified contents. I cannot close my eyes and pretend that this does not exist. Cause the community does not accept the idea that some users are bad users and should move away, a few days ago I have requested the cancellation of my flag as sysop and the lock of my account. If the ideological propaganda must be a more important ground plan than some unknown flies this cannot be my project. I'm afraid, I spent five years in wikipedia to get anything (in italian we say un pugno di mosche, "a handful of flies") --gian_d (talk) 12:19, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Re. Wimedia Commons for Dummies

Dear Notafly,

It was really nice to read your messages. First: be assured that I will do my best to give all the information required to find the name of the plants and flowers submitted. And yes, I am French and it seemed a good idea to try to submit my pictures for help in a French speaking (writing) group. But it is not of great importance as, as you well know, the names have to be the latin names used by all botanists. I bought myself a few books to try to find the names (some in French, some in English and some in German). Each book has a different way to look at flowers and plants but in the end I always get the latin name. But unfortunately as I am starting from scratch it is not a piece of cake for me, even with photos and descriptions. I am very thankful that you took the time to give me such good help. For the time being it is late and to tell the truth I am quite tired. I will try to work on the files tomorrow. Thanks again for your very appreciated help. I put the 4 tilde and hope you'll see "Dinkum". Best regards. Dinkum (talk) 20:06, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

"Maison Auzoux"

Hi Robert,It's always a pleasure to read you.

  • The Nikon is a good camera. What are your settings, initially, that are not perfect. Did a test if you work in manual. If you pull in RAW here is no problem because you can changeyour color temperature after the shoot. If you are working directly in JPG you can changebut you have to vary several parameters. The first: the color balance can be modified onthree RGB colors: dark, medium, and light. Then you can finish by the partial de-saturation of a color being careful. If you can shoot, always in RAW.
  • I did not know the paper models of the "Maison Auzoux". Thank you for letting me learn. Iam doing some research to see if we have, in the Toulouse Museum. By coincidence, I'm in Venice, where I made contact with a molding company that is scenography and reconstructions of animals (especially in paleontology) [7]. This is the modern equivalent of Auzoux ... best regards --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 13:44, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
  • I received the confirmation we have no specimen of the "Maison Auzoux" in the collections of the Museum of Toulouse. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 10:35, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Melanagromyza sp - 2012-05-11.ogv I do not think it will be possible to give a species id Gf-2012-05-11.ogv May be in the genus Phytomyza. What is the plant? Have you posted this at Diptera info where you will get a family specialist identification. Notafly (talk) 20:34, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for you remarks. The plant is Sambucus nigra. Milos Cerny at diptera.info wrote (similar to your comment): "Probably Phytomyza sp. Agromyzidae". I think it is a nice idea to use these words in the file description. A clearer id seems to be impossible. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 22:49, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Horaga onyx

Hello. I am Alan Cassidy and I am a specialist in S. E. Asian Lycaenidae. You have posted an image called Horagaonyx.jpg, which has now been referenced by several Wiki pages. Unfortunately, I think that the specimens concerned have been wrongly labelled and, in fact, belong to a species from a different sub-family. The true Horaga has 3 hindwing tails and the hindwing does not exhibit an anal lobe. The specimens shown all look as though they belong to the Remelanini of the Iolaini, not the Horagini. Additionally, most Horaga males have a white spot on the upperside forewing, which is missing from the butterflies in the image. Do you have a picture showing the undersides of these specimens? This would help to determine their actual species. It would also be helpful to know where the specimens were captured and in which collection they reside. Regards ACCassidy (talk) 12:38, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Hello Robert. Great! All images are more than welcome. I have no real preference really. I have done all species except the Skippers, but I am steadily working my way to full coverage of all African species, so feel free to upload the plates in any order you like. Could you keep me posted when you uploaded some? I will extract the individual species images and add them to the pages on wikipedia..! Cheers! Ruigeroeland (talk) 11:51, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
