Hello.

Could you update the File:Time Zones of Africa.svg by coloring Sudan in yellow because it switched to UTC+2 in 2017, and could you rectify the erroneously strait border of the time zones in the Congo Democratic Republic because they follow provincial borders in that country? I requested this because I don't know how to create and upload SVG files myself.

Thank you.

Maphobbyist (talk) 14:36, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry. I just hadn't the time to do it. NNW 17:02, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's updated now. And Mali and Guinea are two countries again. NNW 11:31, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the update. If it is not impertinent of me and if you have the time, could you update File:Daylight saving time in Asia.svg some time? Maphobbyist (talk) 21:42, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Could you update the File:Daylight saving time in Asia.svg by coloring the whole of Cyprus in blue (because Northern Cyprus started to use DST again in November, after abolishing it for one year)? Could you also color all the islands of Russia, Japan and the Philippines in orange and all the islands of Indonesia in red (because they have been forgotten and appear in gray). I requested this because I don't know how to create and upload SVG files myself.

Thank you.

Mergers[edit]

Hi, We need a Norway_Vestfold_-_Færder.svg which is a merge of Norway_Vestfold_-_Tjøme.svg and Norway Vestfold - Nøtterøy.svg. Is that something you have time to fix since you have made the others? --J. P. Fagerback (talk) 07:09, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! A map of Færder is available now, the others are updated. Of course it will take some time to create new maps of Trøndelag. :o) NNW 12:42, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A few more:

  • Lardal need to be included in Larvik also.
  • Hof need to be included into Holmestrand.
  • Rissa and Leksvik has become Indre Fosen.

Thanks in advance.--J. P. Fagerback (talk) 17:50, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Hi there, I've recently used a couple of your (brilliant) maps - Scotland and Scotland North to show the locations of womens football teams in the swpl and swpl18 in scotland.

Could you create anything that primarily the central belt of scotland but includes aberdeen?

It's to show the swpl2 clubs here: [3] ? GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 17:37, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Scotland centre location map.svg is available now. NNW 10:33, 8 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I'm having real difficulty adding Scotland centre location map.svg to [4] in replacement of the current swpl 2 map for the locations of teams. I've tried quite a few things...? GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 17:37, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have to create a location map template for it. The easiest way: You copy en:Template:Location map Scotland South into a new en:Template:Location map Scotland Centre (or something similar) and change the file name and the top/bottom/left/right coordinates with those of the file description of Scotland centre location map.svg (and the name parameter, of course). Then you can change the name of the location map template in en:Scottish Women's Premier League#SWPL 2. That’s all. NNW 17:40, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. Will do that. Thanks NNW GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 00:16, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I can't get it to work - [Scotland centre location map] after i made this template: [5] - i don't have a clue what's going on... GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 00:43, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that you named it Template:Scotland Central Belt, not Template:Location map Scotland Central Belt. I tried to move it but I wasn't allowed to do it. NNW 09:01, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think i understand. I tried it again and it wouldn't work. Might try to move it as you tried to but not sure how. I'll keep trying, would hate to give up GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 19:12, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you are not allowed to rename the template either, just ask an administrator. Or create a new template with the correct name and get the other one deleted. NNW 19:14, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Tried again - failed utterly. Might try to contact a page about maps to see if someone will help. Completely lost. Thank you so so much for your help NNW GlasgowBraveheart (talk) 19:24, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Correction requests[edit]

Hello, NordNordWest.

There are mistakes in these maps which have not been undone. Would you correct them?

1. In both File:Christian States.svg and File:State Religions.svg, El Salvador is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Article 26 of the Constitution of El Salvador does not declare the Catholic Church as a state religion: "The juridical personality of the Catholic Church is recognized. The other churches may obtain recognition of their personality in conformity with the law". Source: http://confinder.richmond.edu/admin/docs/ElSalvador1983English.pdf

The border of South Sudan which became independent in 2011, is also missing in both File:Christian States.svg and File:State Religions.svg.

2. In File:Map of state religions.svg, Georgia is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Section 1 of Article 9 of the Constitution of Georgia does not declare the Georgian Orthodox Church as a state religion: "The state shall declare complete freedom of belief and religion, as well as shall recognise the special role of the Apostle Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia in the history of Georgia and its independence from the state." Source: http://www.parliament.ge/files/68_1944_951190_CONSTIT_27_12.06.pdf In the same map, Zambia is also is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. The preamble of the Constitution of Zambia declares Zambia as a "Christian nation", but does not declare an official state religion. Source: http://www.parliament.gov.zm/sites/default/files/documents/amendment_act/Constitution%20of%20Zambia%20%20%28Amendment%29%2C%202016-Act%20No.%202_0.pdf

3. In File:Paises con mayoría cristiana.svg Nakchivan needs to be painted in pink, because it is an exclave of Azerbaijan, and like Azerbaijan as a whole, Nakchivan doesn't have a Christian majority.

a couple of questions[edit]

Hello! Hope you will manage to understand my English. 1. What are you guided by when you decide what N/S stretching should be used? Is this figure taken "by eye" or is it accurately calculated and based on something? For example, here you used at first sight weird 111.8685 % stretching. 2. How do you cut your maps accurate to tenths of a degree? As I understand, there must be some simple command in some GIS-soft; but cartography help pages here are not exhaustive so I did'n find the answer yet. --Yakiv Gluck (talk) 20:44, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

1. In the beginning I preferred stretchings which could be divided by 10: 110, 120, 130 % etc. Later I started to do it more precisely. You take the central latitude and then it's rounded (1/cos latitude)×100. There are some exceptions, e.g. the location map of Germany has had to fit into the infobox for municipalities which was much older than the location map project. It has got a stretching of 150 % instead of the correct 159 %. There are some other maps with such "wrong" stretching, too. Egypt had a stretching of 110 %, but when User:Sting created the relief version he wanted to have a stretching of 111.8685 %, so it wasn't my idea.
2. My SVGs are made with a vector graphic program, not with a GIS software, so it is easy to cut them to accurate tenths of a degree. NNW 16:16, 23 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

Can you add South Sudan in these maps:

File:Official English language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official Spanish language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official French language in the World.svg
File:Official Portuguese language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official Arabic language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official Chinese language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official Russian language in the World.svg - in use
File:Official German language in the World.svg
File:Official Italian language in the World.svg
File:Official Dutch language in the World.svg - in use

I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files, now it is reduced to less than 750 maps, but there is a long way to go.

Unfortunately I don't know how to edit SVG maps myself, that is why I asked you.

Thank you.

File:Turkey Istanbul location map.svg[edit]

First off, thank you for your work on this map. I wanted to ask if you could possibly make some notable additions to it.

Most importantly, large bodies of water such as Lake Küçükçekmece and Lake Büyükçekmece on the southern coast are missing. I think this is because they are also missing from the original map this was based off.

Lake Terkos (or "Durusu") on the north coast would also be helpful. Sazlıdere dam on the European side, and Ömerli dam would be great too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Junk2711 (talk • contribs) 16:57, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Random question on someone else's map[edit]

Hi NNW, I hope you are well. I have a bit of a random question regarding the choices made to create a map - unfortunately its author appears to have retired. I don't know if my questions arise from a misunderstanding on my part, poor choices on the cartographer's part, or some other reason... so I don't know if it's something that needs fixing or not. I would appreciate your opinion on whether this is something I should try to follow up. Essentially, I'm puzzled by which rivers are illustrated on File:Europe_laea_location_map.svg. Upstream of the confluence of the Loire and the Allier, the Loire disappears in favor of the Allier. The same thing seems to happen with the Drava and Mur, where (to my eyes) it looks like the tributary is followed upstream, rather than the main river. Likewise with the Neman and Neris, and a few others. Is my expectation that the main river would be followed as standard practice just an incorrect assumption? Thanks for any insight you could offer! Cheers, Storkk (talk) 09:23, 9 April 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Hello! You are right, as a cartographer you usually show a river from its source to its end. Unfortunately there are lots of errors in map data. There is a simple reason for it: You don't know the area, you start at the mouth of a river (the easiest way to create a network of rivers in maps) and choose always the longer river at a confluence. In most cases you will have a correct result but of course there a several other cases where you will produce something that is not wanted, e.g. the Vltava is longer than the Elbe. Seen from a hydrological point of view it would be correct to show Vltava and not the upper part of the Elbe, from a cartographic point of view Elbe should be shown. Another case: Saône and Doubs (also wrong in File:Europe_laea_location_map.svg). It’s lack of time and/or knowledge that such mistakes happens because you are not able to check all rivers. Allier and Loire look quite similar and have a similar length -> 50 % chance to choose the wrong river.
I don't know if these wrong choices were made by Alexrk2 or the original cartographers of Natural Earth. I’d guess that the data which was made in the U.S. has got more mistakes outside North America just because they didn’t know the rivers there as good as the rivers at home. And it gets even more complicated when rivers change their names. Then you have to do research or to decide if all this effort is worth the result, especially with rivers far from home. :o) I hope this explains a bit the complexity of map-making. NNW 10:05, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help, that all makes sense and it clears up much of my confusion. I've taken a look at the current version version of the Natural Earth data, and it looks like things are better with that dataset this days. It seems relatively straightforward to replace the rivers layer on the SVG maps, so I'll add that (and its long list of dependent children) to my todo list. Thanks for your help! G'day NordNordWest. I was looking for a map of the Yugoslav banovinas between 1929-1939 and saw File:Yugoslavia (1929-1939) location map.svg was your work. I'm wondering if you would be willing to do a version which coloured each banovina in a different colour and labelled each one? I am using currently a map done by another editor File:Banovine Jugoslavia.png, but it doesn't provide any source information, which may become an obstacle to its use on en WP. The article I am using it on will shortly be a Featured Article candidate on en WP, and I really want a map I can be sure of the source information for. Request for map[edit]

Hi Nord,

Can I request you for maps for Province No. 3, Province No. 4 (now, Gandaki Pradesh), Province No. 5, Province No. 6 (now, Karnali Pradesh) and Province No. 7, like before you created map for Province No. 1 (File:Nepal Province No 1 adm location map.svg) and Province No. 2 (File:Nepal Province No. 2 adm location map.svg). I know you might be busy but you can do it later when you will have time. Thank you---Raju Babu (talk) 11:43, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I really don't know when I will find the time to create completely new maps in the next time but I won't forget your request. NNW 17:32, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sir, you completely forgot my request... Raju Babu (talk) 06:54, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for map - Israel[edit]

Hello, I notice that you made the File:Israel location map.svg. Can I ask you to please make a variant of it like the File:Israel by israeli law adm location map.svg? The Israel by israeli law adm location map.svg has a weird white edges and it is not in the same dimensions of Israel location map.svg Israel location map.svg.

I'll be happy if you can make a map based on Israel location map.svg but with the Golan Heights in the same yellowish color as Israel, leave Gaza Strip in the same grey color and the West Bank with stripes in both colors.

I would really appreciate it, tnx. Sokuya (talk) 11:44, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Israel by israeli law adm location map.svg has got the same size as Israel location map.svg but if you prefer a different look (Gaza without stripes) then it won't be a problem. What about Jerusalem? And do you have a good name for the file? NNW 15:59, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I want to consider East Jerusalem, No man's land in Latrun and Golan Heights as Israeli administrated territory in the map, so their color would be the same as the rest of Israel. "File:Israel administrative location map.svg" or something like that. I don't know. Sokuya (talk) 19:45, 15 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Israel administrative location map.svg is available now. NNW 17:31, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I really appreciate your help. Sokuya (talk) 20:42, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

File:Peru physical map.svg[edit]

Greetings,

I see that you have been working here with maps akin to File:Peru physical map.svg and I wondered if you know where the underlying elevation information might come from. I am asking because on the English Wikipedia the copyright status of the underlying information has been questioned and the uploader is fairly inactive. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:34, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how Urutseg worked. I guess he took a relief and created the contours lines automatically with a program which is able to do it. NNW 15:01, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I was wondering more about the source for the topographic information, not about how it was turned into a map. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 15:16, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of sources for free geodata. NNW 15:35, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi NordNordWest,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Republik China-diplomatische Beziehungen.svg is out of date. Burkina Faso + El Salvador. Could you update it? Thanks again. Fippe 20:13, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! It's updated now. NNW 15:38, 27 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! --Fippe 07:36, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong shape of Oddar Meanchay province?[edit]

The shape of the Oddar Meanchay province in the Cambodia map and a second map does not seem to be the actual one. Google shows the southern border differently, so does Microsoft, the 2018-map I have from Reise-Know-How as well as Wikimedia Commons. These maps follow the Sren River (Stung Sren) rather then a straight West-East line. The file on the province article is slightly corrected but still not to the extent of the above-mentioned maps. I guess there was a correction of the border some time in favour of the Siem Reap province in the recent past but I cannot find any sources for it. Can you help? --Peteremueller (talk) 07:14, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I usually try to use official maps from each country but as you can imagine Cambodia belongs to the "difficult" countries. With a quick search I have found this document which follows your hints. I used maps like this or this. I will have to see if I can find some further maps which might tell what is right or wrong. NNW 08:01, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I will try in the meanwhile to contact the Province administration to get an answer.--Peteremueller (talk) 01:14, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gruß -- sarang사랑 06:24, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Moin!
-- sarang사랑 13:50, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Madeira hat doch gar keinen Kringel. NNW 14:03, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Newly created municipalities in Greenland[edit]

Dear NNW, as a contributor to the Dutch Wikipedia I am writing an article on the Hiawatha crater which was discovered in what I understand to be Avannaata. The Dutch Wikipedia seems to be outdated on this, as it refers to the region as Qaasuitsup. According to the articles on the English Wikipedia, the new municipalities were created on the first of January, this year. You updated this file with the new borders. Could you provide me with a source on the new municipalities? I would like to update the Dutch Wikipedia, or at least have it updated by someone who is more familiar with the subject so that "my" article on the Hiawatha crater contains and links to the correct information. Maartenschrijft (talk) 23:55, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I took the information from Map of the municipalities and districts of Greenland.jpg and http://en.nunagis.gl . NNW 17:19, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reliefdarstelltung[edit]

Hallo NordNordWest

Gruss --Tschubby (talk) 14:58, 23 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Autobahnen in Deutschland: Abschnitte mit mehreren BAB[edit]

Hallo NordNordWest,

Liebe Grüße, NJ Giggie (talk) 15:53, 10 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

--NJ Giggie (talk) 08:46, 28 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Black Sea map[edit]

Hi there. Not sure if this is feasible, but I was wondering if it was possible to create a location map of the Black Sea, similar to the map you have of the Baltic Sea. Right now the only options available is File:Black Sea location map.svg and it is not of the best quality. Hope you can help, Thanks! --2607:FEA8:55A0:1B7:2583:AFD6:EF0E:1795 12:44, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I can add it to my to-do-list. First of all there is January, 1st with lots of necessary map updates. New maps will have to wait. NNW 13:58, 22 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
