New extension category Ships by name

As we are discussing the matter and I experienced a new phenomenon: ships built at the same yard in the same year. (Solved it by adding the yard number. But of course this had te be discussed too.) I am preparing an extension of the on-going discussion about ships by name. See the first parts of User:Stunteltje/Sandbox/Ships, not finished at all, just a start. You'll find part your comments and please comment there between the lines if you like. I intend to present my suggesions for naming in the on-going discussion. I'll ask a few other people too to react there. What do you think? --Stunteltje (talk) 08:10, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Discussion ships

As I already outlined I expected to continue the full discussion on the discussion page around the 20.000th ship by name. Unfortunately someone opened the discussion at the Village pump. So I copied the first part of the discussion there and mentioned that I have to go out now, but want to discuss further on the discussion page. I also intended to copy our other discussions of my user pages, but I don't have time left for that. Up to you or I'll wait for the moment we discuss further on the discussion page. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:10, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

OpenStreetMap

You are aware of OpenStreetMap? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 17:58, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I'm aware of OSM. Question - is why are you asking me about it? I haven't made use of OSM data for my maps, as the OS data (especially Boundary-Line) is more suitable for the map I've produced for Commons. In fact, I suspect the British admin-boundary data within OSM is derived from Boundary-Line in any case(!) Familiarising myself with OSM should help with Ireland though.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:23, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Addtional Scottish council maps

HI

I notice that great work you did at creating this pic:

and I was wondering if you could create other examples for the other Scottish council elections:

Its a real battle trying to get more older election page up-to a proper standard which is shame --Crazyseiko (talk) 23:11, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

I didn't actually produce the map showing the 2012 results (that was User:Spiritofsussex), but he used my blank map (File:Scottish council areas 2011.svg) to create it. You should be able to use the same blank (along with the results), to produce maps for 1999-2007 elections - there are instructions at w:User:Nilfanion/Elections. Let me know if you need further advice.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:29, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Railway maps

Hi mate.

I was wondering if you could do me a new map along the lines of File:First Great Western route map 2010.svg. It needs to cover the area is bounded by Gloucester, Bristol, Bath/Freshford, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton and the Severn Estuary; it includes the branch line to Severn Beach. There's a version on page 4 of [1]. I don't need the stations highlighted, just the lines. I guess in black. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:31, 28 June 2012 (UTC)

That should be straightforward enough, as it looks to be quite a small area of the network. I'll revisit the TOC maps sometime too - I realise I left that half-done...--Nilfanion (talk) 21:39, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
OK, need a new one for Greater Bristol Metro. It needs the following bits highlighted (Bristol blue maybe? You decide).
Bristol to Exeter Line from Bristol to the south end of the WSM branch.
GWML from Bristol to Bath Spa
Cross Country route from Bristol to Cam & Dursley
Thornbury branch line
Portishead line
Severn beach Line
South Wales main Line between Westerleigh jct and Pilning
Henbury Loop Line
You can see a diagrammatic map at [2]. If it were possible to highlight the stations, that would be good too, let me know and I'll say how they need to be highlighted, because the linked map is wrong about them. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:59, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

P.S. Thanks for taking the picture and making it available.

Yes, that sounds fine, thank you for letting me know (and glad you find it useful).--Nilfanion (talk) 23:47, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nilfanion,

I am writing from Dorling Kindersley, a London based book publishing house.

We are currently researching a book called, “Where On Earth” and some of it’s pages will be dedicated to cyclones. To illustrate the text on cyclones we would like to use this particular image in our book from your collection:-

Maps

Hi, Nilfanion.

I noticed that you recently created File:United Kingdom relief location map.png, and I was wondering if you would be able to talk me through the steps of how you did it. I've been fascinated with maps and atlases for since childhood, and I've had a go at making maps myself, such as File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, File:Matthewedwards.svg, and File:Topographical map of the Antipodes Islands in English.svg. To make those I used NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM3 v 2.1) edited with 3DEM from Visualization Software LLC, and GRASS GIS, and the instructions at Topographic vector mapping tutorial on Wikipedia.

However, GRASS is rather complicated and although I've managed to draw those I still haven't really got the hang of the software, and I can't for the life figure out how to add bathymetric information. I saw that your UK map had it and I've also read User:Nilfanion/Maps and glanced through Category:Maps by Nilfanion, and like I said, if it isn't too much trouble I was hoping you might explain the steps as to how you create your maps so I may have a go myself and hopefully use that method to producing maps with NASA shapefiles.

Cheers, Matthewedwards (talk) 15:39, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Certainly agree that GRASS is a rather complex tool, and that tutorial on en.wp is both somewhat complex and poorly translated IMO. I may write a similar full tutorial.
I'm a bit busy at present, so I'll give a brief description of my process (which produces PNGs) for now, and pad it out later
  1. Get the topography, and its hillshading, sorted. Create a png from them.
  2. Do the same for the bathymetry.
  3. Create a svg from the coastline data.
  4. Edit this (eg in Inkscape or a text editor) to ensure each land mass's coast has a single closed path, including any on the map's edge. Combine these into a single path.
  5. Alter the coast path to stroke:none;fill:black and convert it to a png
  6. You can then combine the bathymetry and topography, using the coast png as an input mask
  7. Export any other overlays required, and combine with the above in GIMP to get finished product.
I can't immediately recall where I got all my data from - but File:Ireland relief location map.png uses NASA data only.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:17, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Merseyside UK location map

I've just noticed File:Merseyside UK location map.svg has no railways on it! I assume that's an error. Could you upload a new version with railways, when you have the time? (No urgency.) -- Dr Greg  talk  00:56, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Other Protestant churches

There are still categories for these under Category:Churches in Cornwall by religion; Category:Churches in Lancashire by religion. The one for Devon has been tidied up but these still exist.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 16:49, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Didn't notice those. That said, with the Devon sorted, its just a question of using same princple - discussion isn't really needed now. I'll have a stab at them when I get chance--Nilfanion (talk) 00:42, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
For reference the list is:
Category:Other denomination churches in Berkshire‎, Category:Other denomination churches on the Isle of Wight, Category:Other Protestant churches in Cornwall, Category:Other Protestant churches in Devon (still), Category:Other Protestant churches in Essex, Category:Other Protestant churches in Lancashire and Category:Other Protestant churches in the United Kingdom.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:44, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, it is a time-consuming task to clear up something like this and in some cases there is very little information about where that church should go.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 08:16, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Derivative map template possibility

So useful are the maps coming out of your major project that I wondered if there is any mileage in a specific template to save time when anyone does derivatives, perhaps Template:Deriv-Nilfanion.

I have used some of your SVG maps to create a base locator map from which individual island locator maps can be made, and I am looking at more of them. For example File:Orkney blank.svg is from one of yours, stripped back to essentials and recoloured. Each time I fill all the fields for the base map as a derivative (which seems to require that I give the name of the original three times). For the locator maps derived from the base map, I forget the "derivative" elements and just give the base map as the source, while repeating the Licence field.

You provide Commons with a great deal more than the maps, so might too focussed a Template be problematic? Before I start using your name in vain, I would welcome any thoughts you have on parameters and so forth.

Hogweard (talk) 14:38, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree a custom template would be handy, the derivative upload process is tedious - a template will make it faster and ensure consistent text. One additional benefit is it ought to stop flooding the source files with links to derivatives, which aren't relevant a lot of the time. Look at File:English ceremonial counties 2010.svg to see what I mean.
With regards to its parameters: the source being something like "Derived from [file(s)], created by Nilfanion from OS data" and carrying forward the license info should suffice. IMO no need to mention me again in the author field of the derivative... And I'd suggest you solely focus the template on the maps - anything derived from photos ought to be uploaded as normal and marked with {{Retouched}}.
Incidentally, I just checked some of your Orkney maps and they don't even have license info at present(!) Never mind mentioning either me or OS.--Nilfanion (talk) 15:24, 9 September 2012 (UTC)
How about this one, as a quick knock-up job: Template:Deriv-Nifmap. The intention is that one should just replace Template:Information with Template:Deriv-Nifmap and use the same fields as for a plain upload. It will then feed those fields to Template:Information and give it the licence etc. It only works though for a file derived from a single file of yours; more complexity is beyond me at 11 o#clock at night.
I inserted it successfully into File:Orkney blank.svg. There is no carry-over into derivatives of the derivative, which for the ones I did just reference the original "blank" file. Hogweard (talk) 22:08, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

File:Raspberry Pi 7.jpg

Hi. I saw this diff and note that the retained file has no description. My version was linked to in my gallery on 27 March 2012. I don't care which version is retained, as they've been identified as duplicates. However, I wonder whether my version also had an empty description parameter, as the retained version does. If not, I'd like to suggest that combined information from both descriptions should be presented. What do you think? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 08:37, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Yes the files are exact duplicates. If I remember right I'd have preferred to have kept your version (as its older), but when the duplicate is bitwise-identical the script doesn't let you reverse the order - something it allows for non-exact file.
Your version did have a description. I should have detected that when I did the deletion, and carried it forward, but was oversight on my part (I've added it now).--Nilfanion (talk)
Thanks, although I now see that my description doesn't amount to much! Would it be possible for the script to check for an empty description in the retained file and copy the parameter from the other? Or maybe amalgamate multiple descriptions for a human (non-admin) to refer to and edit? Thanks. -- Trevj (talk) 08:32, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
The script allows the processing admin to include all info from the originals (description, licence, categories etc). Modification of the script to check for, and warn about empty description, no licence, no categories, might be possible. Allowing non-admins to merge duplicate descriptions would also be helpful.
Proper place to discuss those modifications is MediaWiki talk:Gadget-AjaxQuickDelete.js (beyond my skills set!).--Nilfanion (talk) 21:59, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Beyond mine too! Thanks, I might drop a note there. Cheers. -- Trevj (talk) 12:22, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Would it be possible to change the filename of this

; Welsh bards are not Arabs and their costumes are different.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 16:46, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Its certainly possible: You can either tag it with {{Rename}}, or I can do a rename - if you can suggest a better one? I suggest the description needs tweaking too...--Nilfanion (talk) 22:23, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
Could I suggest you amend description but I do not know enough German to translate it all. Filename could be: Bundesarchiv Bild 102-12697, London, Duke of York with Welsh Bards 1931.jpg.--Felix Folio Secundus (talk) 11:57, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Hurricane GIS Tracks?

Hello, I was installing the track map generator on Ubuntu 12.04 today and I discovered that it wouldn't build. It appears that the newest version of Cairo depreciated some of the features used by the track map generator. I was able to use w:Scientific Linux with an older version of Cairo however this does not appear to be feasible in the long term.

As a result, I have a question: in this response, did you say that there was a way to make the tracks with GIS? If so I was wondering how one would do such an image.

Thanks, — Iune(talk) 23:35, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm not surprised that the Tracks package would break in the long run (unmaintained code will eventually break if its dependencies are liable to change). GIS can be used to provide identical output, and can be extended in many more ways than the generator (a light-weight single function tool). Different projections, different data displayed (eg pressure or wind swathe?).
Basically what you need is a GIS program like Quantum GIS and the GIS-format source data (not HURDAT!). NHC provides current season info here, making it the obvious place to start. Only real complication is getting the background map added.
If there's sufficient interest from WPTC I'll try to work up a tutorial so that you can produce identical output to the tracks package, as well as pointing out possible ways to improve on it.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:10, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll look into Quantum GIS this weekend — Iune(talk) 02:41, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Licensing

Hello,
I uploaded this file. I added this licensing:

{{self|cc-by-3.0}}

As i made it by my own, based on the logo of a game called "Club Penguin", however, as it is based on a trademark, i don't want to encourage people to use it for advertising. Is there a better licensing for this file, on this case?
Deuterium (talk) 12:13, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

{{Trademarked}} is what you need. The license info at File:Disney Club Penguin Logo.svg, which I guess is an older version of the game's logo, is the appropriate way to handle this. I would suggest that you also mark it as PD - if its too simple for copyright, then neither you or Disney can assert copyright over it.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:49, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

AWB

Hi Nilfanion. I adjusted the instructions at Commons:AutoWikiBrowser because preferences is now under options rather than tools. Should there be a note concerning older versions of AWB where it's under tools? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 19:59, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

I don't think note is necessary. My understanding is that older versions of AWB are disabled, and if you attempt to log-on will instead tell you to update to current version. I'd double check that behaviour by testing an older version. Perhaps a message like "the current version of AWB is X and can be downloaded from (link). Older versions are disabled on this project" will be useful, but how to work old versions isn't really.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:00, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. I think I'll leave well-enough alone, seeing that the WP AWB soft redirect leads to all the info I could see anyone needing, and links to downloads etc. INeverCry 21:12, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

South West Geograph categorization

Hi, I have updated the South West script with the new logic. Any reason not to kick this off again? I'm thinking of starting it from zero (it was at 54,000 out of 148,000) which means a couple of days to catch up with where it was, but there might be a few mismatching old categories that it would replace in the process. Double categorization should now be impossible, as it will strip out any that match 'Geograph images in ' and add the new one, if different.

By the way, I have tried doing a bit of a dry run, and an example of a correction that starting from zero would bring up, would be File:Hurn Railway Station 1.jpg and File:Hurn_Railway_Station_3.jpg where Hampshire would be changed over to Category:Geograph images in Dorset. -- (talk) 11:38, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Sounds sensible to me, and yes starting from scratch and changing as appropriate is sensible. Category:Plymouth, Category:Torbay, Category:Poole, Category:Bournemouth, Category:North Somerset and Category:Bath and North East Somerset, are all the categories for the UA of their name, so you won't get any disambiguation errors. I will compile a full UK listing for UAs nationally, to ensure you avoid the sort of error Foroa reported in future.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:31, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Faebot's next Geograph run

Hi, Faebot is on Page 122,953 of 147,957 @16:53:06 for the Devon/Cornwall area per User:Faebot/Geograph#2b: Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, so should complete this major bit of categorization in the next two days or so. I will probably set up Wales again this weekend (or maybe the beginning of next week) which would be a similar nice month long task to churn through. It might be a good time for you to take another bit of a sniff around the Cornwall/Devon sorting, just to make sure, and I'll have confidence when using similar logic for the Wales region. I might then re-kick London sorting (as soon as Hampshire vs. the Isle of Wight finishes) which has been paused since we reviewed the process. Cheers -- (talk) 16:58, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Will do. I suspect I will find apparently misplaced files, for the same reasons as happened in the Welsh check. However, I doubt there will be anything drastically wrong (I've already been using Geograph in Devon to find Devon images without Devon cats).--Nilfanion (talk) 23:08, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Truly terrible error

The bot is clearly broken - why on earth would it think the image to right is Dorset instead of Devon?! Joking of course :) This one illustrates the limitations nicely, as only a human would be certain to get both this right and a second photo from the pub looking towards where this one was taken. It's only Devon image wrongly in the Dorset cat.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:30, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Pacific Typhoon from 2000 to 2012

Hello, I love your work on the typhoon mapping! I am an artist and am currently working on a sculpture in which I am translating the typhoon tracks over Taiwan in to a multi-media sculpture. I have been trying to compile track information in the Pacific and generally close to Tawian from the years 2000 to 2012. Can you help me obtain files that I can work with in Adobe Illustrator? I would ideally like to take each typhoon season by year and over lay them for the 12 years I am looking for. Could you perhaps help me with this?? Or point me in the direction of someone that could help. Essentially I am wanting to work with the track files in a format that I can extract the track each individual track, no globe image behind it, then I can compile them myself. Please let me know if you can help with something like this. All the best, Thank you.

Your project sounds very interesting.
I could produce a series of PNGs, with the track shown against a transparent background, calibrated to show the same geographic area (which will ease overlays). Basically you'd like get a series of files like File:Haitang 2005 track.png but with a transparent background. Those files will be raster images, which may or may not be too limiting for your needs. Several other people here can use the package to create similar tracks, but I doubt they have the skills to handle a request like this.
If you will need to have vector images to work with, that's a lot more complex. Best way to do that would be using GIS software like w:Quantum GIS. That can convert the raw data to a vector format like SVG - if you have experience with GIS you can probably do that yourself. I would be able to, but it would be time-consuming.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:31, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Faebot is going through the whole of Wales, and to avoid wrong categorization dropping out of Google Maps for images that OS data cannot handle, I allowed Wirral area categorization. However after looking at the Commons category discussion on what was the Wirral category, and the associated Wikipedia articles, the best naming to choose is still out-foxing me, I may just be tired. If you have an opinion I would welcome something I can let Faebot apply and remap the work so far if needed. Cheers (talk) 17:33, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

As I've said before, don't use constituencies like Wirral South or Wirral West. The bot is using administrative data, so when it returns "Wirral" it means the administrative area called Wirral ie the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, not any other meaning of the word "Wirral". That means there are two options:
  1. Use "Merseyside"
  2. Use "Metropolitan Borough of Wirral"
Both are viable, it depends on if you want to provide greater precision. There's no harm in doing so, and probably will be beneficial so I'd say use borough-level.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:49, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I think I was tired. I'll remap Faebot now to use the Borough for any of the Wirral names, we have a category for that anyway. Cheers -- (talk) 23:01, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

changes

FYI, I've started a thread on the village pump (Commons:Village Pump#Changing PD to free license) regarding your recent changes from PD to cc-by-sa on some of your works. I can certainly understand why you would want to make such a change, but I'm not sure if that should be encouraged. Or if its even enforceable, you did put the works into the public domain.--Nilfanion (talk) 22:19, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

I added a "Credit Phil Konstantin" to my photos when they were first uploaded. A few days later, a "know-it-all" Wiki user told me I was not allowed to require people to credit me when they use my photos. The Wiki user said Wikipedia REQUIRED that all photos by Public Domain. Since there were no options on the upload page, I had to choose the unwanted PD. Later, I discovered the CC 3 designation. All I want is my name credited as photographer. Other than that, I have made asked for no limitations on use. If someone says they downloaded it before I changed it, that's OK with me. Phil Konstantin Philkon (talk) 23:27, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

category redirects

According to [3]: The name "Pörsten-Leipzig" is wrong, its not the name of the railway line, and nobody would search for this name. The correct and only name is "Leipzig-Plagwitz–Pörsten". So I think, the redirect is not necessary. --Andre de (talk) 12:29, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nilfanion, independent of your current conflict with Foroa, I want to suggest that it might be wise to add some small note for admins, as myself, to such redirect-cats as Category:People from Osaka stating that they were created intentionally and should not be deleted. Otherwise there is always a risk that a user puts a media into this redir-cat, then another user discovers this and moves the media into the regular-cat and then tags the redir-cat for deletion. --Túrelio (talk) 13:12, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

I agree that is a risk. I haven't created that many (so am able to actively monitor them), so I feel no particular need to add such a note. The cat-redirect emptying bots are reasonably prompt so its unlikely a file will remain there for too long.
What I would say is the conflict between myself and Foroa ought to be solved by developing some sort of community consensus. Once that is established, I'd imagine we will have a relatively circumscribed set of situations where category redirects ought to be used. I didn't create any redirects from meta-categories, for example, as I see no potential for someone to use link to such a category externally.
{{Category redirect}} itself can then be edited to directly reflect that consensus, making additional notes redundant.--Nilfanion (talk) 13:19, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Bonjour,

Merci d'avance, Automatik (talk) 22:27, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for replying in English - easier for me to do so.
Template:InterProject/Wikinews is used in a few places on Commons to provide a link to (en) Wikinews. For instance, it is used on Special:RecentChanges to link to n:Special:RecentChanges
Template:Sisterlinks is no longer used on Commons, but its role is still valid and useful. That is done by the sister templates in Category:Interwiki link templates. There are examples of this at Category:People and Category:France. Wikipedia links are not included in the Commons template, as they are handled via the sidebar on Commons.--Nilfanion (talk) 09:41, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer, it's clear to me. Automatik (talk) 19:43, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Scales on maps

What to what scale are your maps such as this one, this one and this one drawn? Are the scales and specs consistent throughout the UK? Thanks. Hogweard (talk) 17:27, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

The maps have been designed to fill the canvas with the subject area (allowing for a reasonable margin), and ensure that the boundary conditions were as simple as possible. For example on the Outer Hebrides, the boundaries are all to tenths-of-a-degree. Maps showing the entire country are even more - as I made sure the aspect ratio and boundaries matched the existing maps like File:England location map.svg. Those things, and the choice of projection, are all to ease usage in location map templates.
The exact scale wasn't a design consideration, and each map will have a different scale. Its extremely unlikely that any of my maps have simple scales like 1:250,000, and its coincidence if two maps have the same scale. All I can really say is that the scaling is consistent - smaller subjects have larger scales.
Approximate scales can be determined by working back from the boundary parameters: The Outer Hebrides map is 2.6 degrees wide which is ~155 km wide, at the central latitude of 57.65 N. The SVG is nominally 91mm wide at 300dpi. So that's approximately 1:1,700,000 as a printout. The nature of equirectangular projections means that the scale is variable at different latitudes (cf File:France location map-Regions and departements.svg.--Nilfanion (talk) 23:43, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
Thank you; it is a more complicated business than I hoped, but things can be done with this. If you have or know of a detailed SVG blank map (coastline only) for the British Isles or at least for Great Britain as a whole then I can base some new maps on that.
I have a current problem in that Inkscape crashes my computer when manipulating your larger SVG files simply because of their size, which shows your dedication to detail. I am hoping that some more RAM may solve that problem.
Hogweard (talk) 18:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
It should be relatively easy to extract an SVG coastline map from the existing maps. Even if Inkscape fails due to memory issues, a text editor can be used for that - deleting the relevant paths isn't that difficult.
As for basing new maps on the coastline, what is it you are trying to do? I should be able to offer more concrete advice and probably prepare a base coastline map more suitable for your needs.
For example, if you are trying to display historical information on a modern coastline, then its likely your sources will use the OS National Grid (OSGB). I can readily create an SVG coastline on the same projection. Advantages there is that is the "ideal" projection for British maps, a uniform scale and is easy to plot grid references onto. Those are all big plus points for combining with other maps or data using that projection (any OS map). The drawback is converting WGS84 latitude/longitude to an OS grid ref is hard. That can't be done on-the-fly by location maps, hence the use of equirectangular projections, and converting maps between the two can only really be done in a GIS package.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:40, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
I have in mind immediately a set of historic county maps, to be drawn on an otherwise blank map of the British Isles. There is a good dataset in KML format provided by the Historic Counties Trust as its "County Borders" project. This data is very detailed, based on OSGB and scaled at 1:100 000; that is big data and too detailed in its current form for and when I tried to manipulate just one county's data to try to create an SVG it caused another crash! (Mind you, I was doing it manually without much of an idea about what I was doing.)
The coastline data is not good, but the borders between counties are done exactly. If there were a way to generate a deprecated version of this boundary data to a more web-friendly scale and converted to SVG, we could have some pretty good maps. So far the published data covers only England and Wales, though I asked the HCT and understand that the Scotland boundary data is there, just awaiting a good source of coastline data. Hogweard (talk) 22:52, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
That task is easy enough, and I can readily produce their data in SVG format. A good source of coastline data is readily available too - OS Opendata. The Boundary-Line product contains the modern admin boundaries and, more importantly here, mean high water for GB. HCT could readily use that to finalise their Scottish data.
That said, I advise a degree of caution in its use. I found that data a while a go and asked about it here. The data shows the counties as defined by the HCT, which is roughly (but not necesarily exactly) what they were in 1887. There's other caveats as well such as differences from the time of Domesday, how the exclaves are handled and so on.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:05, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
The HCT data should be plenty good enough for most purposes, and detached parts can be include or wxclusded easily enough (I'll ask if that data is there). If you can do it, I would be most grateful, and I will ask the HCT to put a link and an acknowledgement on their website if you wish (and they are very pleasant chaps so I'm sure they will). Hogweard (talk) 18:50, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm going to be unavailable for a week or so, but will get at this when I can. I certainly agree that the data is good enough for most purposes (and its a very useful resource). Its more about making sure its not misrepresented, HCT data is subtly different from "the counties in the year X", so shows something different to File:English counties 1851 with ridings.svg.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:21, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

That would be great if you can, when you're free. I'm sure we can find a suitable name for the resultant map. Hogweard (talk) 22:35, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Of course problem here is HCT hasn't got the Scottish data online... I'll get an England/Wales map up later this week.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:26, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
That's very helpful. If I find out that the HCT have Scottish county border data, I will let you know. Hogweard (talk) 18:41, 29 May 2013 (UTC)

File:England and Wales Historic Counties HCT map.svg got that map up now (finally).--Nilfanion (talk) 11:52, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

Isle of Wight map?

Hi there. I'm an editor over at Wikipedia, and I've been working on an article about the election recently held to the Isle of Wight Council. I've noticed the amazing ward maps you've been producing, and I was hoping if I would be able to ask if you would please be able to produce one for the island? I really think it would help make the article that much more complete, so if you are able to do this then thank you! I'd do it myself, but I haven't got a clue about how to go about making one. Look forward to your reply. Redverton (talk) 15:39, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

The relevant blank map is at File:Isle of Wight UK ward map (blank).svg - there haven't been any (significant) boundary changes since 2010, so that map is valid for the elections that have just been held. There are instructions at w:User:Nilfanion/Elections, which should be sufficient to help you create a coloured version for the 2013 election.
If need be I should be able it myself eventually, but I have a number of other tasks to do here at present (as well as in RL), such as getting current maps for those areas affected by boundary changes.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:58, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Lochan Lunn Da-Bhra and Loch Linnhe from Ben Nevis.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Borough map locators

Hi, I've seen all your great maps for boroughs and districts, but I have come across some boroughs that don't have your maps available. It would be great for you to create these so that all boroughs in the UK have the same style map. I will change the Wikipedia articles when you create the maps. Some of the districts/boroughs that don't have your locator maps include:

  • City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
  • Metropolitan Borough of Bury
  • Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley
  • City of Wolverhampton
  • Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster
  • City of Leeds
  • Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham
  • City of Liverpool
  • Metropolitan Borough of Wirral
  • Metropolitan Borough of Walsall

- there are possibly more If you could make these locator maps, then that would be excellent because it would help all the maps on district-level wikipedia articles to be equal and to be more appealing for readers. Once again, I really love how accurate your maps are! Thank you. EverythingGeography (talk) 14:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Question to clarify do you mean ones like File:Plymouth UK locator map.svg? ie The Borough/District within its ceremonial county?--Nilfanion (talk) 20:05, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I meant those ones. It would be great to have all Wikipedia articles to have matching maps like that one. EverythingGeography (talk) 20:16, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok, shouldn't take me too long. I will do this over the week.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:19, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you very much. How do you make those maps? EverythingGeography (talk) 20:22, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
In this case, its trivial (just colouring in File:Devon UK district map (blank).svg). As for where the blank came from - that's me using GIS software and exploiting OS OpenData. I can give fuller explanation if you are interested in doing map-work yourself.--Nilfanion (talk) 20:35, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
That's very easy. Am I allowed to upload images after them being coloured in by me? EverythingGeography (talk) 21:05, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Yup, like any other work on Commons you can create a derivative. Suggest you use DerivativeFX to ensure correct attribution.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:08, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
I didn't know its that easy! EverythingGeography (talk) 07:21, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
I was just wondering, does the image have to be .svg or does it not matter? EverythingGeography (talk) 08:01, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
SVG is preferred. The guidance at w:User:Nilfanion/Elections should be sufficient, and this particular job can easily be done with a text editor. All you need to do is change the fill of the relevant area from #fefee9 to #d40000 . If you want more detailed instructions, I will do so tonight.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:20, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
OK England is now (mostly) done. Category:Maps of English districts gets to them. There are no district locators for a few: Bristol, the Isle of Wight, Rutland etc. Because the county is the district in those cases....--Nilfanion (talk) 22:12, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, I am in the process of editing the articles on Wikipedia. EverythingGeography (talk) 08:05, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Keith, Banffshire ( not Keith, Moray )

Keith is in Banffshire not in Moray. It is in the county of Banff, within the Local Government area of Moray. Wikipedia states that "until 1975 it was in Banffshire". It still is in Banffshire. The Local Government was superseded by a new model of Local Government, but the County of Banff was and is still the County of Banff. The heading on Wikipedia is incorrect. Scotire (talk) 02:28, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

New model of Local Government did not "abolish counties"

In some people's ignorant reckoning, the counties of Scotland were made "former" when old Local Governments were superseded and new Local Governments were formed. So this suggests, by their twisted reckoning, that if there was an election for the Government of Scotland and a new Governement installed, then the Country of Scotland would be "former" and no more. Scotire (talk) 02:28, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Keith, Banffshire in Lieutenancy of Banffshire

Keith, Banffshire is in the Lieutenancy of Banffshire, not Moray. It has been changed on Wikipedia from the Leiutenancy of Banffshire to that of Moray. For confirmation that there is a Lieutenant of Banffshire, see http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_services/page_47212.html Scotire (talk) 02:28, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Banffshire is not a "former" county

Banffshire is not a "former" county. The entry on Wikipedia has been vandalized and changed to "former" county. - It is an existing county, and it's area is managed by people on the councils of Moray and Aberdeenshire. The councils are just that - people who are managers of the areas of the county, they are not the place. Scotire (talk) 02:28, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Everything that you are saying is incorrect. Also you should take these matters to Wikipedia, not Wikimedia Commons. EverythingGeography (talk) 08:14, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Faebot eats Scotland

I am running on a small subset of regions, you can see some results populating a few new categories at Category:Geograph images in Scotland and I have started to document this part of the project at User:Faebot/Geograph#C5. I am going by Category:Council areas of Scotland, and will probably re-iterate over the same initial sets until all regions have a mapping, then it can just run through the rest. If this gets contentious, then I'll happily park running this for real for a while. Note, I'm out of the country for a week in a couple of weeks and I'll not be leaving this to run unattended, just in case of issues popping up. Your early comments welcome. PS, I was picking up some points in the Isle of Man, sadly Mapit can't cope with this GPS data, I guess the OS data does not cover it (not checked, should be a easy special set later on); see here for an example. Thanks -- (talk) 13:57, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

Isle of Man isn't covered by OS data, but as you say it should be trivial to identify. You could just draw a box around the island, and everything dump inside that in the IOM category, without needing to check against other data.––Nilfanion (talk) 09:43, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
Faebot and NI

Drawing your attention to this question. I have it pretty much set up as there are relatively few photographs taken in Northern Ireland. -- (talk) 21:27, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

While we are looking at category structures for Scotland I think this could be updated- some of the subdivisions are the old "vice-Counties" that date back to the 19th century and haven't been used for donkeys years. Scottish National Heritage now uses seven "Lead SNH Areas" (which are much too large for us to reasonably consider) and the 32 Council Areas we use in the main stucture, and it would seem to make sense to move all these old categories to the CAs, so that they would be properly integrated into the hierarchy. Here's the search page showing how they operate. Does this make sense? Rodhullandemu (talk) 19:47, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Makes sense to me. Personally I'd eliminate anything and everything that is not a current admin area. And then re-add other units if there's genuine value to doing so. The CPs are an example - that's starting from square one to add something extra.
I don't know how much help I will be really. As I've got too many things on the go As usual: Uploading own photos, getting maps created/uploaded, cleaning up after Scotire on WP (see WT:SCOTLAND) and here...--Nilfanion (talk) 21:24, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
OK, I think the SSSIs won't take too much effort and it makes sense to do that before I start to drill down though the Council Areas. As for CPs, (1) I was hoping to use the MapIT website as used by Fae to get them on a per-image basis from coordinates, but I don't think they support that level of detail- I've emailed them just in case and (2) I have managed to get a spreadsheet of all the CPs but there are one or two inconsistencies to sort out. Don't worry about helping, it seems every Scottish page I go to on en:wp has been "touched" by Scotire in some way, but I can't help out there. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 21:50, 4 September 2013 (UTC)
Scottish CPs are not on MapIT at present (English/Welsh are), but its doable. The source I used for that map could be used by them to provide that service. The quality is marginally lower than OS Boundary-Line, but would be good enough for the vast majority.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:58, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Nilfanoin, you wrote me, that the both images File:Haytor 0370.jpg and File:Postbridge 0385.jpg are not allowed. These both stones are in a public area and so I am in the meaning, that they are depending from http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/48/contents#mdiv62 are free to show. But you are a english admin so it's sure, that you know more than me. In Austria such cases are free without problems, but this is in England ;-) --regards from Vienna and sorry for my bad english --K@rl (talk) 10:29, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Regarding these signs, Freedom of panorama in the UK is broadly comparable to Austria. However, graphic works (like the photo on the signs) are not covered. The sign itself would probably be ok, if the photo wasn't so prominent.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:44, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Okay, I think the photo on the stone is not so prominent on the complete stone and has not so a threshold of originality. But if you mean, so you can delete the both too. My heart is n't so hanging on there. regards K@rl (talk) 12:13, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Metrolink

Hi again Nilfanion,

Rumour (well, inside information) has it that the Rochdale stretch of Metrolink is to open very soon, with bosses aiming for 28th February (at best) or 18th March (at worst).

I can sort the black map out with the update no problem, but it occured to me that the coloured "route" map may be more tricky. Does the colour map have the Rochdale stretch info embedded into it (invisibly)? If so, I can probably work it out. If not, are you willing and able to update the map in readiness? Jza84 (talk) 16:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

The colour map doesn't have that embedded. A copy/paste of the required elements from the basic black map will work here (as the extension of a single colour route), but that may be difficult in Inkscape.--Nilfanion (talk) 00:55, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi Nilfanion, I'm glad you said that. I was trying to work out how to copy and paste it in Inkscape all last night without success! I tried it in illustator, but some information and styling is lost upon opening the SVG (probably my old version of illustrator). What I don't want to do is to come grovelling to you every time a new line opens, but wondered if this is something you can help with on the coloured map if you get chance this coming week? I thought I'd let you know too that I uploaded all the historical maps of the Metrolink system's growth based on your work too. :) Jza84 (talk) 15:23, 20 February 2013 (UTC)
-Sorted the black version, which is the the Metrolink maps category, but I've raised a GL request at en:Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab/Map_workshop#Metrolink. Not sure if you're able to pick it up - if not, hopefully someone will come along before Thursday! :P Jza84 (talk) 17:22, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for delay, but got the coloured one extended to Rochdale station (not town centre). One plus to leaving it to today saves any short-term inaccuracy by showing a non-open line on the map. This also confirms my lack of faith in the workshop page on WP, an experienced SVG editor ought to be able to do that in <15 min. So why didn't anyone....?--Nilfanion (talk) 09:01, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you sir - much appreciated as always. The workshop is a real shame - a project like that could give (for instance) design students great real-world experience, portfolio building, and the opportunity to have their work shown on some of the most valuable and wide-reaching real estate on the internet! (unindent) Hi Nilfanion, as you did such a great job with File:Metrolink route map 23 May 2013.svg, I wondered if you would consider doing a new one now that Ashton under Lyne is now on passenger service? --Peeky44 (talk) 10:35, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Map Help

I've made changes to the Falkirk page, I think that is a better layout for Scottish towns and cities than the current one that is being used. I included your map above the pushpin map and wanted to know if there was a way to add a pushpin onto your map (While keeping the current layout) or can you find a map that actually highlights Falkirk (town) within the Falkirk Council Area? (The same way New York City is highlighted within New York state on this map https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/12/Map_of_New_York_Highlighting_New_York_City.svg/787px-Map_of_New_York_Highlighting_New_York_City.svg.png)

Thanks :) Anarchistdy (talk) 05:43, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

This is more difficult than it sounds. The problem is how do you define the boundaries of the town of Falkirk? There are a number of subdivisions that may be applicable:

  1. Civil Parishes. Falkirk CP covers the town, as well as Hallglen to the south, and much of the rural area to the W.
  2. Community Council Areas. There is no single area called "Falkirk"; Falkirk Central covers the town centre, while the suburbs are contained within 5 other areas (which may also cover areas outside the town).
  3. Settlement. The Falkirk settlement includes Grangemouth and Stenhousemuir, but excludes Hallglen.
  4. Locality. The Falkirk locality is Falkirk only (excluding Hallglen).

If Falkirk was in England, this would be easy. Then the unit to use would be the Civil Parish, as that would be the area of Falkirk Town Council. But Falkirk Town Council doesn't exist. Settlements and localities are statistical areas and the GRO definition is here. For reference according to the 2001 census data here, the population of Falkirk Civil Parish was 43,012, Falkirk Settlement was 91,422 and Falkirk Locality was 32,379.

I think discussion is needed on WP to work out what exactly should be done. The fact Falkirk Council produced different data from the 2001 census using different units to GRO indicates the sheer complexity here. SCROL says Polment locality had a population of 19,563, while Falkirk Council says Polmont settlement had a population of 5,422 - because these are referring to wildly different areas. Both are reliable sources, and both are "right". When you can determine what the town is, then producing a map showing its boundary is relatively simple.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:09, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the response, I wasn't aware of the complexity. I thought they would just have the Falkirk town area outlined on an ordinance survey map somewhere.

I want to include the pushpin map on Scottish towns and cities as well as your map, (because your map of Scotland in the top right hand corner is too small), but that doesn't allow me to add a pushpin to your map (Which it did before, see: Larbert). Maybe you can change the layout of your maps? Have a large map of Scotland showing the council area above the zoomed in council area?

(I don't know if I'm explaining that right, basically have this map https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/8c/Falkirk_in_Scotland.svg/2000px-Falkirk_in_Scotland.svg.png at the top then this map underneath https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/b/b4/Falkirk_UK_location_map.svg/2000px-Falkirk_UK_location_map.svg.png but it would be one long image.)
