There are simply some images whose content is objectively not particularly suited to the JPEG format -- see Template:BadJPEG... AnonMoos (talk) 14:44, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have 1 granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy to have your contributions automatically sighted. Hello, Nihonjoe!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Nihonjoe,

Thanks for helping Commons fixing misleading file names. Please bear in mind that renames should comply with the above mentioned guideline. Please attempt to state which reason for renaming you are applying. Please avoid renames such as

 • 21:53, 2010 October 11 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) m (2,272 bytes) (moved File:Paul Hogan 1926.jpg to File:Paul T. Hogan 1926.jpg: To differentiate between the various Paul Hogans of the world.)
 • 19:33, 2010 October 17 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) moved File:Kit shorts UNIONII 1011.png to File:Kit shorts UNION 10a.png ‎ (better name)
 • 15:39, 2010 October 18 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) moved File:50S6thSt.JPG to File:50 S 6th St, Minneapolis, Minnesota.jpg ‎ (more descriptive title)
 • 21:50, 2010 October 11 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) moved File:Moto Guzzi 110 1965.JPG to File:Moto Guzzi Hispania Lario 110.jpg ‎ (more descriptive title)

As Commons is a multilingual website, please avoid renaming file to other languages and spellings (Commons:Language policy)

 • 21:56, 2010 October 11 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) moved File:التل.jpg to File:Shrine of Ammar bin Yasser in Ariqah.jpg ‎ (more descriptive name (Arabic name only means "The hill"))
 • 05:39, 2010 September 21 Nihonjoe (talk | contribs) moved File:Vöppstedter Ruine von Osten.jpg to File:Voeppstedter Ruine von Osten.jpg ‎ (Vermeidung von Umlaut-ö)

Thanks.  Docu  at 04:40, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Not sure what you're trying to get at here, but all the ones I've done to this point were valid renames. Even the Arabic one as it was a more descriptive title (even more descriptive than the Arabic title; I would have renamed it tot he same in Arabic had someone suggested the correct Arabic title with that meaning). ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 05:57, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Which of the listed reasons for renaming were you trying to apply? I can't find any that says "To differentiate between the various Paul Hogans of the world.". Further, please avoid changing the language of file names.  Docu  at 06:05, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Are you being purposely difficult? Most of the reasons given when I move a file are what the person requesting the move entered. I don't often change that reason unless it's completely unintelligible. "To differentiate between the various Paul Hogans of the world." is just a more specific way of stating "More descriptive filename". And I will move a file from one language to another if it's going to be a more descriptive file name. If you can provide me with the Arabic for "Shrine of Ammar bin Yasser in Ariqah", I'll be happy to move the file to that name. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 06:17, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
Before renaming files, you should check if they meet our Commons guideline (Commons:File renaming). Once you read it, you will notice that "More descriptive file name" isn't mentioned. Please review that guideline before doing further renames. Your knowledge of Arabic isn't a reason to translate names to English. This is a multilingual project, please try to keep it that way. Docu  at 06:52, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
I've read the guideline, multiple times. And I didn't do any translating (I don't even know Arabic); I merely assisted by moving the file to a more descriptive title (specifically covered under "change from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image displays". "Hill", whether in Arabic or in English, is a completely meaningless name when used to describe the Shrine of Ammar bin Yasser in Ariqah. Why don't you go pester someone else who may actually need your enlightened intervention. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 17:45, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Cropping images

By way of information for the future, when you want to crop an image I suggest you use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the copped version as a separate new image, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 16:00, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

@Ww2censor: What are you talking about? And why are you being so condescending in your comment? ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 16:10, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
When you uploaded File:Aegopis verticillus ( Férussac, 1822) (6684424059) - front of shell.png you provided the link to the commons image but as it was a Flickr image the flickreviewR bot failed the image because it was unable to find any Flickr link, so it was tagged for human review. I reviewed it, and if you look at my edit you will see my additions as well as a good flickr review. My advise, that you call condescending, is to assist editors be more productive and devote their volunteer time to avoid problems when possible. This is such a situation That's why I pointed you towards the CropTool for future use as it will make such cropping easier and as I stated, transferres all the necessary information that I added manualy as well as giving it a good review. If you find such constructive advise condescending so be it, but I'm just trying to help you for similar future image cropping. I'm sure you have no intention of making more work for us volunteers when it can be avoided. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 16:25, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
@Ww2censor: "Us volunteers"? As if I'm not a volunteer, too? This is why you're coming off as condescending: because you treat everyone but you and "us volunteers" as an idiot. Please try revising how you provide information like this in the future so it doesn't feel like you're talking down to us poor plebes. I don't use the crop tool myself because I find it clunky and a pain to use. If you feel it is beneath you to do what you did, feel free to do other less menial tasks. No one is forcing you to do anything. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 16:31, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Indeed you are a volunteer too and I never suggest you we not and if you just don't like the CropTool, you could have just said, and that's ok too but at least please provide the original Flickr link when you add a Flickrreview template when you crop an image, so it is easier to find for human reviewers. Good evening. Ww2censor (talk) 16:41, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Kosovo maps rename

You have renamed some files from Category:SVG locator maps of districts in Kosovo (location map scheme). Given the often hotly contested political landscape on the Balkans, that's not naming scheme I would prefer - but I'll accept your decision. Could you please check all other maps in Category:SVG locator maps of districts in Kosovo (location map scheme) so that you come up with a nomenclature that treats all files alike? That would be naming criterion #4 of Commons:File_renaming#FR2. Now some have the (UNMIK) name part, some file names start with District others don't. Some use English names, some use names from other languages. Thx. --TUBS 06:38, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

@TUBS: I only processed requested renames. They seemed reasonable, so I processed them. I don't have time to investigate every possible rename of other images right now. If you have concerns about the requested renames, please discuss them with the person(s) who requested them (look at the history of the pages). Thanks. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 17:03, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

@Majora: Wow, that's rather draconian. Perhaps make sure the person was actually abusing the right before removing the rights altogether? Assume good faith and all that (or is that only on enwiki?). If you meant "may result in the removal of the right it's determined it was being abused", then that's different, but the wording seems to lean toward my initial interpretation. I hope I'm wrong. :) ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 22:23, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
The right would only ever be removed if it was abused. That is why the we wanted to make sure file movers got this message. To ensure that they all understand what suppressing redirects is for and what it is not. Many file movers have never had this right on any project and they might not realize that suppressing a redirect would break file displays if the file was in use. That was our main concern. Since we are primarily tasked with providing media to the projects we wanted to ensure that the display of that media remains intact. --Majora (talk) 22:32, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
@Majora: All of the file moving I do uses whatever automated tool is displayed when someone adds the request to move a file. That tool automatically updates all of the links to the file on all WMF wikis, so there are no redirects needed and there should be no "breaking of files" (still not sure what this means, unless it means "breaking of file links"). If this somehow "breaks" a file (or file link), I have no way to know that since it tells me all of the file links on all the wikis have been updated. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 22:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Not necessarily. The moving tool attempts to use your account to replace the file usage on other projects. If it can't for whatever reason the command gets added to User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers to allow for CommonsDelinker to handle it. In the meantime the redirect autocreated makes it so the image is still displayed. So in those cases if the redirect was suppressed before and admin can review the request and the bot could process it the display of that image would break. In any case, if you only use the moving tool you are never in any danger. It doesn't allow for the suppression of redirects when the file is in use. You'd have to use the special page to get around that. I do see how that wording can be misconstrue and I do apologize for that. --Majora (talk) 22:42, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
@Majora: No problem. It just seemed draconian the way it was worded. Since the note has not been substituted (at least here), you could likely clarify the wording of the template you used for the notification to make that easier to understand (especially the part about using the automated tool like I do). ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 22:44, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) 'there should be no "breaking of files"' is badly wrong. phab:T29917 & phab:T37721 if you are not aware. If you can't think in the perspective of third-party reusers, then don't even think about suppressing the redirect --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 22:46, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
@Zhuyifei1999: Who said I was thinking about it? My concern was the confusion in the notification message, which Majora has addressed well. Nothing here is "badly wrong". ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 22:50, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
What must be made clear is that there is little tolerance for misuse of the right. AGF will be done, but if the file is in use on any project (I guess we can make an exception for bot-created galleries), and that non of the above conditions apply, then it is grounds for removal of the right, whether the filelink was delinked or not, before or afterwards. "Breaking files" just make theproblem more severe. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 22:59, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
@Zhuyifei1999: Are there any user rights where abuse is tolerated? As far as I've seen, abuse is generally dealt with reasonably quickly, perhaps after a discussion about it among interested editors. We don't need to be shaking our collective fingers at everyone and telling them, "You better watch out! Don't step out of line, or else!" People with such permissions already know they shouldn't be doing malicious or reckless things with them. As I wrote already, Majora addressed (and continues to address, below) my concern. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 23:05, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

If either of you can think of a better wording, I can make a quick tweak. My brain is apparently still trying to recover from the initial problem sending this message in the first place so I'm having a hard time coming up with a different phrasing. "The breaking of file displays"? "The redlinking of files in use"? --Majora (talk) 22:51, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
@Majora: I think something like this should work: "The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right." Something like that. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 22:56, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. ✓ Done. Thank you! --Majora (talk) 23:02, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Renaming AV receiver

Hi Nihonjoe, thank you for renaming File:Rear panel of Yamaha RX-A2020 AV receiver - at IFA fair 2012.jpg. I had a look at your user page and saw that you speak Basic Afrikaans and also Japanese, which I find kind of interesting. As I lived, being a native German, for a year in Cape Town in 1996/97, I dare to be curious and ask you where your Afrikaans knowledge comes from. Best, Pittigrilli (talk) 08:58, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Sorry for any confusion. I've removed that. I've had some language study in German, and therefore can usually figure the written language out since it's a similar language in many ways (since Dutch and German have common roots). I don't really speak it at all. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 16:29, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Graphic Designer's Barnstar
I think the graphic you created that is now representative for all of Speculative Fiction on Wikipedia is a wonderful contribution in the true spirit of charity and collaboration.

Glad to have you making improvements on the site, it is inspirational. Merlin31420 (talk) 18:19, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

@Merlin31420: Thanks! It's not anything fancy, but I think it works well enough for the portals. If you run across any other non-English speculative fiction portals that don't have it, feel free to let me know. I'll try to work it up for them, too. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 18:50, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

There is not any copyright violation here. Yes, the author has copyright over it, like the author of any file licensed under cc-by-sa 3. It's a free license, however. Darwin Ahoy! 20:18, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Hello! This is the result of an incorrectly renamed file. Return it back, or rename it with the name that was declared. --Matsievsky (talk) 17:42, 18 October 2022 (UTC)

@Matsievsky: We don't switch languages for file names. See COM:FRNOT. If you want to propose it be renamed into something else in Russian, please go ahead. The current file name is accurate. for its content. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 19:18, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
See COM:FRNOT: "Files should NOT be renamed ONLY to translate the filename to another language and/or because the filename is not correctly capitalized." Therefore, you are wrong. I renamed the file for two OTHER reasons. --Matsievsky (talk) 22:46, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
You know, Matsievsky, being rude to someone is not a great way to get them to do what you want. Looking back at the request, you used 2 and 4: the previous name wasn't a "meaningless or ambiguous name", so that was completely irrelevant and shouldn't have been used. I have renamed it to what you requested. Perhaps next time you can use only relevant criteria when requesting such renames, as well as learn to be more polite to your fellow volunteers. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 16:34, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Where is "meaningless or ambiguous name" from? --Matsievsky (talk) 17:06, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
@Matsievsky: That's what criterion 2 is: "To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays." See COM:FNC. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 17:09, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
In Russian criterion 2 is: "бессодержательный или расплывчатый" - "meaningless or vague". The name was vague. And what do you consider my rude? I apologize in advance for this rude. --Matsievsky (talk) 17:32, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
@Matsievsky: The part that came across as rude was the "Return it back, or rename it with the name that was declared" and "Therefore, you are wrong". The come across in English as overly demanding (the first one) and antagonistic (the second one). Since we're all volunteers here, ordering someone to do something (the "overly demanding" part) is not an effective way to get your fellow volunteers to do something. It's possibly just a difference between Russian and English ways of sentence construction. Either way, I appreciate the apology, and everything should be good now. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 17:38, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I've heard that Japanese is very polite. --Matsievsky (talk) 17:44, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
It can be, but not always. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 17:45, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Request

Hi

The request is legitimate like to Germany on 1933/35 which the country has 2 flags. There are proofs that the 1923 flag have been used until 1958. Panam2014 (talk) 03:26, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
