Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Photo on Soupy Sales Wikipedia Page

Dear Nightscream,

I hope I'm posting this message in the right place. I would simply send you an email if I could; however, I have so far been unable to locate contact information for you, other than this page.

Anyway, I have a request regarding the Wikipedia page for the recently-deceased Soupy Sales: The large photo of Sales at the top right of the page shows him at the end of his life, in extremely frail health. Is it possible for you please to replace this photo with a more flattering and representative one, one that shows him during the peak of his performing career?

As a fan of Soupy Sales, I was taken aback, and even somewhat offended, to see that the only likeness of him on his Wikipedia page is one that shows him in a state of severe decline. I would have simply replaced the photo myself with a more representative image, except that I am not certain of the copyright ramifications.

I hope that there is something that can please be done about this. Thank you.

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:10.18.09BigAppleCon1.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. Deletion request

Hello,

Please tag duplicate images with {{Duplicate}}, otherwise admins cannot find and delete them. Blanking the page is not deletion. I deleted both File:10.18.09MikeMcKoneByLuigiNovi3.jpg & File:10.18.09MikeMcKoneByLuigiNovi2.jpg.

Also, what is exactly the problem with Category:2009 New York Comic Con ?

Alphabetical order

I've put a comment into Category talk:Comic book creators with links to guidelines for categories about people. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:12, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

File:KathrynLeighScottHeadshot.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Defaultsort

There's a {{DEFAULTSORT:}} tag that can be added to categorize something a certain way across multiple categories without having to put their name in multiple times in all categories the way it's meant to be sorted. E.g., instead of putting in Doe, John behind say, 5 categories to sort it that way, {{DEFAULTSORT:Doe, John}} will do this for you across all 5 and you only have to type it in once. BrokenSphere 04:22, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Well yes, the categorizations should be as specific as possible. My original message though is relating to how categories/images are sorted within categories. E.g. here, instead of inserting Horn, Greg into each category sort each time, the defaultsort parameter will do that for all of them at once. Does that make sense? BrokenSphere 00:43, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
OK. My initial point was about sorting only, not about categorizing as specificlaly as possible. BrokenSphere 19:24, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:RooseveltStadium.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file ([[:File:RooseveltStadium.jpg]]).

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Cat moving

Sorry to be so late getting back; been busy preparing for retirement from the Phone Company next week. No, far as I know there is no way to move a category to correct its spelling or its unwise naming. If there were, I might have moved Category:Von Steuben Day long ago. Must make a new cat, move all the contents, and finally reduce the old cat to a redirect. However, it remains an academic question, not requiring resolution until someone starts uploading pictures of Steuben parades or Cuba Day parades held in other places. Hi, {{DEFAULTSORT:}} sets the default sort keys, so there is no need to repeat the sort key as piped argument with the categories, unless the sort should be different from the defaultsort. Enjoy the work. --Foroa (talk) 07:42, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

category:Comics writer/artists

Hi, I noticed that you are doing good work here. Thank you for that. I deleted category:Comics writer/artists because we don't want slashes in category names, and it makes no sense to make all sorts of combination categories writers/artists, illustrators/writers, ...

Please not that {{DEFAULTSORT:}} specifies the sort keys, so it makes no sense to add them again as sort key. To the contrary: if the sort has to be changes, we would need to change all keys, instead of one single key.

Keep up the good work. --Foroa (talk) 08:13, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Fireworks pictures and all the rest

As I look down this page I don't see anything at all but deletion requests. Now I have another one: please get the fireworks pictures out of the Hudson River category. We are not going to use anything with your name on it except as the contributor of the picture, and then only your login name. Any insistence on no use except with the personal attribution you require is completey contrary to everything WP stands for. This is not good work at all as the previous commenter suggested. It is you trying to use WP to advertise yourself as an illustrator. I for one would appreciate it if you would stop. WP is a non-profit organization relying on the contributions of its editors. Your pictures are NOT contributions. As payment you require that we use your name in the way you specify. We are not helping you build an illustrator business so please stop. If you do I thank you in advance. You can contribute anonymously like any other editor. If you do not stop judging from your talk page you may be seeing more of WP administrators than you may find comfortable. That isn't my field so I am only making these private suggestions in the interest of convincing you to be more helpful. No one but us need know.Botteville (talk) 02:20, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

How are you, buddy. Thanks for your polite reply. As I understand it, the reply is basically, the restriction you placed on the copyrights of your pictures apply only to outside users, is that correct? WP users can use at will on WP, is that correct? If that is the case I might have been a bit hasty. I suppose I was looking at all these deletions on the talk page. Pictures aren't yet my bag. Maybe you aren't an advertiser. In that case I have a request for you. I noticed that "Category:Hudson River" had hundreds of pictures in it. That in itself is not necessarily bad but a big chunk of them were fireworks. I really don't see how most of these would be used in articles. It seems to me a few would do. I suppose someone could put a reference to these fireworks in one article. In that case one would want to see them clustered under a single title. I suppose they are under the fireworks categories. But, this is Hudson River. They really don't concern the Hudson River. My next thought was to create a subcategory, "Fireworks on the Hudson River" so the user could elect to look at them or not just as he pleases. The system would not put it up! It puts up all my other subcategories. I figured there was some sort of interference. Do you know anything about that? Don't you agree, they ought to be a distinct subcategory? I don't deny they are quite good quality; I suppose you have expensive cameras. But why, I thought, put them in this unlikely place? And why use your powers to block subcategorization? That is the point where I took you for an advertiser. Maybe I was wrong; however, the problem remains. Should these be under Hudson River? If affirmative, should they not be subcategorized to get them out of the way, or to get them more easily in the way if one should decide to view them? If I want to see Hudson River but not fireworks it is a bit irritating to have to look at dozens of fireworks pictures. Well, you say, you have years on WP, some as administrator. As long as you do a good job as administrator that is fine with me. What is your take on this? What would you do? Why did you put these all under Hudson River? Why can I not subcategorize? You should be aware, I am not by choice an administrator. That does not mean other administrators do not review my efforts. With this comment, since you do have years of experience, presumably on Commons, I leave this matter for you to fix. I'll be curious to see how experienced administrators handle issues such as this. I know you can't necessarily do as YOU like. Later.Botteville (talk) 13:50, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Botteville, general interpretation of CC requirements say that a link back to a page where the author is given is sufficient. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:27, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
I am no real expert in license_languange. I would say, Nightscream's artistic way of interpreting (but not overriding) the attribution is a bit of a border case, but no real drama. If you are in doubt, throw it on COM:AN or so to get a round of legaleese. --Foroa (talk) 14:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
We appear to have reached an agreement. If nightscream wants them in and they are free use to WP editors on WP they should stay in, but he agrees they should be subcategorized. He does not have time to do it. For me this is a project I can slowly work on but then so are all the river pictures and any other general category that collected hundreds of pictures. I will work on it from time to time. I presume that because nightscream is agreeing it is not he blocking my subcategorization. Maybe there's another implemetation lag. No rush. Sooner or later I'll find the answer. Matter closed I believe.Botteville (talk) 16:09, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I have a photo of the Pinis together that I can upload soon, that would make this category still valid. Of course Wendy Pini can be a subcategory of it. BrokenSphere 19:37, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

When I created the article I put them together because that was how the English Wikipedia article was/is. If you think that 2 separate categories for both is more workable, those can just be linked back to the Wikipedia article and the dual category can be redirected. BrokenSphere 19:45, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Removal of galleries

If you're going to accuse an editor/administrator/photographer with over five years' worth of contributions under his belt of vandalism, then I might suggest that before doing so, you exclude other, less nefarious explanations for whichever edits you're referring to, and perhaps point to those edits in question with diffs when you leave a message for that editor. I apologize if I've made errors in editing or judgment, but knee-jerk accusations of vandalism of someone without doing this, and/or without checking that person's edit history, isn't in the best spirit of good faith. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 01:31, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Fair enough; I should have taken the time to write a personal note instead. I'm wondering how you came to the conclusion that the galleries Aria Giovanni, Mýa, Ashley Tisdale, Asia Carrera, Amber Benson, J. K. Rowling, Ron Jeremy, Linda Hamilton, Dominic Monaghan, Aaron Stanford, Robert Menendez, Maggie & Don Thompson, Alan Moore, Molly Crabapple, Brian Michael Bendis, and Jeph Loeb should look as they do in the revisions I've linked to here.
Galleries and categories are not mutually redundant. Even if you believed they were, I would expect an experienced user to nominate pages for deletion rather than to simply remove the categories from the gallery, blank them entirely, or leave them in a state of complete brokenness. You'll notice that your edits to those galleries were reverted by several other users as well.
Please respect my request to keep discussions where they started, as this makes conversations easier to follow. I am watching this page, so I will see responses made here. LX (talk, contribs) 05:54, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

I apologize if I was in error. I saw those and thought someone created them redundantly. And no, I didn't notice anyone reverting what I did (though I would've surmised that you did after your initial message). My knowledge of the Commons is still somewhat behind my knowledge of Wikipedia, and although my understanding of it has made certain strides of late, obviously this illustrates that I still have much to learn.

Out of curiosity, what is the purpose of galleries that are not served by category pages? How are they not redundant? Looking over the relevant page, the distinction between "all files" and a "sample" or "the best" seems arbitrary and superfluous. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 05:59, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your response, and it's reassuring to know that we hopefully won't have to do any more reverting. :) Some of the arguments for (and against) having both galleries and categories can be found at Commons:Images on normal pages or categories:Vote. I personally prefer categories for the most part and spend most of my time organizing those, but I can see some of the merits of galleries. For example, I've worked on sorting through Category:Stockholm, which contained hundreds of unsorted files at the top level when I started, and which is now fairly neatly organized into subcategories by topic and geographical subdivision. By contrast, the gallery Stockholm (which I haven't really worked on) might give a better overview of the subject by bringing in content from various subdirectories, organizing it into sections and providing descriptions. LX (talk, contribs) 06:15, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
I reverted some of your "gallery bypass"/redirect operations too. Maybe have a look at very good galleries such as William Lyon Mackenzie King visual chronology, Kölner Dom and Brugge to better understand the potential of galleries. Of course, if we delete all small, upcoming galleries, then we will never have proper galleries. --Foroa (talk) 07:19, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
