GeographBot hole

In case you have not noticed, in the range of Geograph photo numbers 640000 - 649999, the bot has uploaded only half the images. the missing ones are scattered uniformly through the number range. Here are the first few. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 14:20, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I plan on rescanning everything when I'm done uploading. This should catch any missing files. Multichill (talk) 18:23, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Another hole has appeared at 148xxxx. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 11:27, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Urgent

Your Geograph bot is only uploading the 640 pixel versions. See these four for example. Big image uploading was introduced at around Geograph number 1,660,000 which is where your bot is currently working. So urgent action would be a good idea. Logic for identifying big images can be found in geograph_org2commons.php. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 11:53, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

I'll probably just write something to overwrite the images later on. Multichill (talk) 13:04, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Especially if you are not going to upload the high res versions, you need to look at Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project and suppress an upload if the Geograph number appears there. The numbers are pretty "clean". That would avoid duplications such as File:Southwark Cathedral - sword rest - geograph.org.uk - 1396758.jpg and File:Stocksbridge - Leisure Centre - geograph.org.uk - 1396760.jpg. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 13:16, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

10 million

The Geograph upload is getting the file count up fast, I've started a thread at VP on the next milestone (Commons:Village pump#Approaching 10 million files). I'm not sure what the final file is in the Geograph batch, I think its ~1.9M? If that's about right, the upload will conclude about the same time as Commons reaches 10M.

As 10 million is the biggest milestone for Commons in some time, I think it would be good if:

  1. We can identify file #10,000,000 and
  2. We maximize the chance of being it a high quality upload (preferably by a Wikimedian).

Would it be possible to throttle (or pause) the Geograph upload when the file count gets to say, 9,900,000?--Nilfanion (talk) 16:21, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure I run out of Geograph pictures to upload before we hit the 10M. Multichill (talk) 10:29, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
File:Vincent_De_Vroey_(2007).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

2011 Berlin hackfest availability

Hey, the Wikimedia Berlin developers' meeting is solidifying its dates. Could you update your availability? It sounds like you could make either date but I just want to make sure.

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Berlin_Hackathon_2011#Straw_Poll

Date will either be: May 20-22, 2011 or May 13-15, 2011. Please let us know as soon as possible whether either/both of those works. Thanks! Sumanah (talk) 17:46, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Nicole already set the date. This is very strange. Multichill (talk) 17:48, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Unlock CommonsHelper2 bot

Hi Multichill, you have blocked the CommonsHelper2 bot some time ago. I should have corrected the problems. Can you please unlock the bot? --Jan Luca (talk) 17:14, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

I think it would be nice to have a better upload bot. But I think the bot should be tested better before it is made available for everyone. I think you should put a limit on it so only you and a handfull "good" users (users that check everything) can use the bot untill it has been tested better. The problem is that many users just upload the images and do not check the information.
This image for example File:Mustamae in Summer 2003.jpeg:
  • Try to click the link to the file on enwiki. The "+" in the link instead of blanks makes it fail.
  • The license is "I, the copyright holder of this work..." instead of "Kaikjotja at English Wikipedia..."
There is a lot of images with errors like that. Who should fix those? See that is the problem when you allow everyone to use the bot.
So I suggest this: 1) Bot is limited to a few users (if you need someone to test I can help you) 2) Bot is unblocked. 3) Testing and reporting of any errors 4) Errors are fixed 5) Testing, fixing, testing, fixing..... 6) When bot seems to work ok limit is removed. Oh and errors on excisting images should also be fixed with a bot if possible. --MGA73 (talk) 20:43, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Continued from here; I agree that the above fixes should be made soon. Aside from the current issues, the bot was quite good (well, at least when I was using it sometime back) :). Rehman(+) 07:30, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Good idea! I would say that the test users are identify with their TUSC names (if the TUSC auth is OK and your TUSC user is in a list then you can upload). I have added a upload control interface (for change the description).
The link problem is fixed some day ago, see: https://jira.toolserver.org/browse/CHTWO-24.
The bugs from here I have fixed.
--Jan Luca (talk) 07:58, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Just did a test (tried en:File:Dowra Bridge.jpg) and it seems the bot still uses {{PD-self|date = December 2002}} instead of {{PD-user-w|en|wikipedia|WikiTikiTaviToo}}. I would perhaps also move "the intro test" (The upload bot is...) down somewhere. --MGA73 (talk) 21:43, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
I have only controlled if there is {{PD-self}} and not {{PD-self|...}}. Please test it again. Jan Luca (talk) 09:31, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
I did a new test and it looked better now. If the bot is "limited" so only a few users can use it I support unblock so we can do some more testing. --MGA73 (talk) 19:50, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Unblocked. I expect the operators to keep a close eye on it and fix issues. Don't open it up for the general public yet. Multichill (talk) 20:03, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! I will test the upload myself (with File:Test CommonsHelper2.jpg) before I let test it some selected persons. Jan Luca (talk) 10:32, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Looking forward to see this bot fixed and pumping! Best regards. Rehman(+) 15:27, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

So, any luck in the fixes and eventual unlocking? ;) This is a real neat bot which deserves more dedication... Rehman(+) 02:41, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

The author doesn't seem to be very active at Commons. Multichill (talk) 16:52, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Sadly, you're right. Just wondering, is it possible for another user to "take over" someone's bot? That bot was once a very helpful tool for me; really hope it would go online again someday. I will try emailing the user, just to see what they have to say. Nb, thanks for the vote. Happy holidays. Rehman 01:35, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I really forgot it, but I want to release the beta version soon now. At moment I have some problems with the API and the upload (see: [1]) --Jan Luca (talk) 19:01, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, it works now. I have changed the upload to use the PEAR extension "HTTP_Request2". I will ask the TS admins to install the PEAR extension. When this works, then I want to start a "close upload beta" where only some people are allowed to test the upload feature. --Jan Luca (talk) 16:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I have a working version on the Toolserver now: http://toolserver.org/~commonshelper2/dev/index.php. Under [2] you can see the both uploaded images.

Now I'm looking for beta testers who can upload images and test if everything goes right.

Estonian CC licenses

Hei! Could you please create templates {{Cc-by-sa-3.0-ee}} and {{Cc-by-3.0-ee}} for these new licenses, which I've added here. I suppose I can't created them myself as mediawiki messages are involved. Thanks! 90.190.114.172 08:03, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Monument identifiers

I have a dilema with identifiers in monuments_es-vc_(ca). For exemple, at ca:Llista de monuments de la Ribera Baixa in the first monument the number is bic=10580. But we can not link it to his web information page as there is not any parameter avaivable in the url with this number but an internal identifier IdInmueble=26. So we have two parameters: bic=10580 and idurl=26. Probably we will modify fields in monuments_es-ct_(ca) for the same reason. Perhaps it will be a problem to deal with. Moreover, the complete form of the official identifier (bic stands for Bien de Interés Cultural) is "R-I-51-0010580", or "(R.I.) - 51 - 0010580 - 00000" depending of the source. We have reduced it to its numeric form to avoid confusion and to facilitate its use by participants (R.I. stands for Registro de Inmuebles and 51 is the category for monuments). Obviously we need to coordinate it with wlm-es. Any suggestions on both issues? --V.Riullop (talk) 18:21, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

GeographBot uploading broken images

Hi, Multichill. I happened to notice that GeographBot seems to have uploaded a bunch of broken images consisting of nothing but null bytes. I first noticed the broken images last week and deleted them, hoping that it was a transient error and that the bot would reupload them — which it did, but they're still broken. :( I suppose fixing half a dozen images by hand shouldn't be too hard, but I think it would also be nice to fix the bot so that we won't get more broken images like these in the future. Thanks, —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 20:11, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Guinea

Hi. Can you upload most of the images under here, particularly the photographs by User:Attawayjl. It has some much needed images of Guinea and people of Guinea Bissau. The aerial views of Conakry are valuable.. Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:25, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Also I remembered I made a flickr agreement with CharlesFred on flickr 325 sets!! which can be uploaded. Although they seem to like photographing men, they have an awful amount of valuable photos from all around the world. The OTRS ticket can be viewed at File:Agordatmen.jpg. GFDL I believe. Can you upload? I think if you evade the "men of the world" category you could by pass most of the images of men... Thousands of valuable images like this Blofeld Dr. (talk) 16:58, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi Blofeld Dr., you should probably open a request at Commons:Flickr batch uploading. Several people are monitoring that page. I'm rather busy so that's probably a better place to actually get it uploaded ;-) Multichill (talk) 21:02, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Template:Intersect categories

Can we get a kick of {{Intersect categories}}. Thank you. --Foroa (talk) 14:54, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

please stop recategorisation of SLQ ship images

Please stop recategorisation of SLQ ship images. Edits like [3] are wrong. A ship may be 'of' Australia and not 'in' Queensland. Also, your both is not understanding that 'in Queensland' is unnecessary for an image which is already categorised as 'in Brisbane' such as the example provided above. Until you fix your bot, it is being destructive. SLQbot already handles these cases correctly. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:46, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Please rollback these 4065 edits, or individually check each edit. In future, please discuss any planned bot runs which affect SLQ images. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:55, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

My apologies. I see now that {{Intersect categories}} says that a bot will do this, and docu (talk · contribs) is responsible.[4] I will rollback the edits as it is not your responsibility. That said, your bot does need to be fixed, as it should recognise that an image is already in a subcategory of the target category, and thus doesnt need the supercategory added. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:59, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry about this Jayvdb. We can fix it by adding intersect on the the subcategories as well. I should have inverted the two parameters though.
I used it as identified ships are generally in specific "Ships of .." categories. When going through this report, I noticed that quite a few are not Australian vessels. --  Docu  at 06:49, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
I dont understand what adding another intersect will do. I would rather just revert as there are people working on these images, and my expectation is that they are in the 'of Australia' category until someone moves them to the right country. I am almost finished writing the revert bot. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:06, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

WikimediaLicenseTexts

Hello, Multichill. I hve been building a wiki and I started with some images templates. I couldn't get them to work properly and have been trying to narrow the errors down for a few months Here is the image template I speak of here, if you scroll down to the examples you can see my delema. I have tracked some leads to here WikimediaLicenseTexts. this code looks like it will fix that template, only I'm not good enough of a programmer, I have no idea 1) where to install the php 2) and probably how. Could you please give a guiding hand. I've noticed you haven't edited for a while so if you could help please leave a message here. Thanx Mlpearc powwow 04:07, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Templates for WLM Spain

You have said that we need one template for each kind of BIC: monument, garden, archeologic site, etc. but this makes we have to create five or more template 100% similar. This is a problem on Spanish Wikipedia and I ask you if there will be another way. Maybe a parameter on the template, for example "tipobic=" (Typebic) filling with M (for monument), J (for garden), etc. Could the bot for the data base recognize that? But, another possibility, but worse maybe all the names redirecting to the same template. Thanks. --Millars (talk) 22:15, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

That's no problem at all. Just implement that :-) Multichill (talk) 15:56, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
OK. So, we'll take the first option. We'll use only one template for monuments, gardens, sites, etc. but with a parameter into the template because the bot must recognize when the template is used for a monument or not. Regards. --Millars (talk) 17:42, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
