Batch upload

Hi, that's the one I was talking about the other day : Commons:Batch_uploading/Fonds_Eugène_Trutat. I'll probably have to proceed soon (would be better to have some more images before GLAM-Wiki Fr), but if you have some time, I would really appreciate your comments. Jean-Fred (talk) 22:49, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

Responded over there and added the page to my watchlist. Multichill (talk) 21:21, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Pieter Kuiper

Let me get this straight

Pieter, who has nearly been indef blocked, who is forbidden from communicating with Mbz1 because of his use of Latuff cartoons to harass her - and for complaining about which, she was blocked for a couple months - hypocrisy, much? who has a consistent pattern of harassment, and who is the subject of endless discussions on this board, does not deserve ANY block? That's ridiculous. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:12, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, and you have no problem with unblocking him before talking to me, eh? Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:16, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Nope, no problem at all. If an user is losing it I'll first clean up the damage and than contact the user in question. Multichill (talk) 20:17, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
If thinking someomne should be blocked means you cannot block them, then blocks cannot be done. There are many reasons why Pieter should be blocked. Adam Cuerden (talk) 20:20, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Are you going to unblock him so an uninvolved admin can decide? Just say yes or no. Multichill (talk) 20:21, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Maastricht/Utrecht

Multichill (talk) 16:45, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Test? lol. this is not a test. this is a message to community: "Don't say, Show"

Example 1: Instead of all those texts translated to hundreds of languages, put some buttons like this:

this means: tour, tutorial, FAQ, help desk, community, chat, talk to an online admin. no need for translation. everyone understands it.

Looked like a test. Btw, you can sign your posts with ~~~~ Multichill (talk) 16:46, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Can you please add the English name of "Giant Hogweed" to "File:Reuzenbereklauw.JPG"

Hi, this plant is quite toxic, and grows in urban areas as much as the wild. It could be easily mistaken for some decorative plant. It is a pretty picture and who knows what people will get their hands on. Many thanks for considering this request. Tsubbiah

4th of July 2006 Coronado California Pearl Harbor Survivor

July 15, 2010 4:29 Hello,

I was hopping you could help me identify one of the men in your photo taken in San Diego.

In 2006, I attended Coronado's 4th of July parade and snapped a shot of one of the men in your photo, which I would like to publish.

If you could contact me, I can show you which of the men I am speaking about.

I can be reached at: amedina585 atgmail.com

Thank you, Anita

I'm afraid I can't help you. I didn't take these photos, the photos are all from the Navy website. Multichill (talk) 16:50, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Very long time no speak

Just thought of you when I had my watch list 'awash' with siebot changing Panoramic views of Borobudur - trust all is well and that you are busy as always - cheers ( I still have years of work in the Indonesian NEI images - real life is in the way at the moment) SatuSuro (talk) 02:28, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Hoi Multichill,

Multichill (talk) 16:57, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

LoC transfers from enwp

We can reliably transfer some LoC material from enwp. I made a list of external urls+commons templates. These are all specific collections, unlike the more general collections, for which we often need to determine PD-Old/US etc. by hand. All can use {{LOC-image}}. It might be handy to extract the survey number from the LoC records, for use in PD-USGov-NPS-HAER, PD-USGov-NPS-HALS, PD-USGov-Interior-HABS. but if it's too much work i'd say we shouldn't bother. TheDJ (talk) 20:27, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Maybe you should add a request at Commons:Bots/Work requests? Multichill (talk) 16:58, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Au Sable Chasm

Why did you add Category:Temporary categories for images from the New York Public Library to Category:Stereoscopic views of the Au Sable Chasm, New York? Unless I'm very confused, that is a category for machine uploads that haven't been checked. I went through and validated that all of these fit the subject, and I moved the category accordingly; I see no reason this should still be considered a temporary category needing checking. - Jmabel ! talk 17:19, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Also, is there a reason you put Category:Ausable Chasm in Category:Clinton County, New York rather than the more specific Category:Keeseville, New York? I believe the chasm is entirely within the limits of Keeseville, though I could be mistaken. - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Given your lack of reply, I am going to remove the "Temporary categories...", add Keeseville, and leave Clinton County as well. But feel free to reopen discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you, Multichill (talk) 16:59, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Can this be made a gadget?

Multichill, have a look at User:Havang(nl)/List 1. The page is made using NOGALLERY on the category, followed by a standard editing of each image line, see the edit mode. It was easily done by hand, but I should like to have it as a temporary edit as gadget button on category pages. What do you think about it? --Havang(nl) (talk) 05:10, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Looks like the pywikipedia listify function. How would you use it? Multichill (talk) 09:23, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Programming such that a button (or icon) on the category page activates th change of all images from thumbnail to 800px images, which then show under each other (or large screen possibly 2 images); it's as good or even beter as a slide show. The gadget should be accisble to all visitors. Cliking the button again should make them return to normal thumbnails, idem for closing the category page. --Havang(nl) (talk) 09:51, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Sound good, you could make a gadget or toolserver toy. Multichill (talk) 17:03, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Rijksmonumenten template

--Havang(nl) (talk) 10:42, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

If you ever feel like running that query for me, it would be most appreciated. If it's not that easy to do or you're too busy, then don't worry about it. Rijksmonument identifier

Dag Multichill.

Multichill (talk) 17:07, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Template:Object location dec

- Erik Baas (talk) 14:04, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Test herhaald met File:Hoorn, Grote Oost 83-85.jpg, zelfde resultaat... Wat nu ? Moeten we alle templates vervangen, of weet jij een slimmere manier ? - Erik Baas (talk) 14:17, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Multichill (talk) 17:10, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Bot to find and mark dupes

Hi Multichill. A job for your bot? Check all recent uploads if there is a dupe. If there is then mark the recent file as a dupe. Perhaps we need a special template for dupes tagged by a bot - just to inform admins to check an extra time. Perhaps the bot should also inform the uploader

"Hi! Thank you for uploading files to Commons. I noticed that one (or more) of the files you uploaded is a duplicate to an excisting file. If you want to rename a file please use {{rename|new name.ext|reason}}. If it was a mistake perhaps you could help check the old file if it has the right categories and description since you did not find it. The file(s) are listet below:
  • all the files"

Ofcourse the first time the bot should not just check recent uploads but all the files. Hopefully we will not end up with too many dupes. --MGA73 (talk) 20:53, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I could just do a daily dupes query for now or better: If I make the query, could you add it to your crontab to monitor it? Multichill (talk) 17:13, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Erfgoedinbeeld to check

Leuk initiatief.

Ordnance Survey

Hey couple queries relating to what I mentioned at Commons:Batch uploading/Ordnance Survey a while back. Firstly, I'm not sure if the image descriptions for the maps I've created (such as File:Stirling UK ward map (blank).svg) are in compliance with the OpenData licence, as I they don't have "© Crown copyright and database right". Do I need to fix them?

Secondly and more important, would a bot be able to take those blank SVG maps and use them to create and upload locator maps? I used File:Bristol UK ward map (blank).svg to create the files in Category:Locator maps of wards in Bristol, but repeating the process for all those maps will take forever by hand (over 10K maps). If bots can help out, I'll put a request in at Commons:Bots/Work requests after I've worked out what precisely I want.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:37, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

I think the attribution is ok. You should probably put the request at the bot request page. Multichill (talk) 17:29, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

100 MB file size limit

Good day. It has been suggested that I contact you with reference to the 100 MB file size limit currently imposed on Commons. I have a 330 Mpx picture when saved at highest quality, has a size of 250 MB. Is there a way I could upload this image, instead of a lower quality version?. Thanks -- S23678 (talk) 20:34, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Wow, nice picture! You could probably get around it with a server side import. I can't do that, but some of the people in #wikimedia-tech on Freenode can. You'll probably have more luck over there. Multichill (talk) 17:30, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Latvian politicians

Hi. I've discovered a gold mine for Latvian politicians at here. The flickr user is Saeima (which is the national parliament of Lativa) and has the official national parliament coat of arms. Given the extent of the photos 2300 odd including valuable ones of sessions like this etc I'd say it is definately a photographer insider of the Saeima. I wondered if you could use a bot to upload all of the photos of the politicians to the commons unless there is some problem. Photos like this are very hard to get hold of; its obvious to me that the person who uploaded them to flickr is the photographer so has the right to release the images under this license. Please can you bot upload them, it won't work when I do it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:11, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

I created Commons:Flickr batch uploading/Latvian politicians. Multichill (talk) 17:35, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

BHIC

Hoi, Multichill. Groeten --Havang(nl) (talk) 13:08, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Multichill,

I added the templates to a few categories. If you have a moment, would you run your bot through it? Thanks.  Docu  at 11:01, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

BTW, the lack of archiving brought your talk page into Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded.  Docu  at 11:07, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Puzzled

Dear MC. Concerning your recent block, could you explain to me the difference beween nl:lul and en:dick (both figuratively spoken of course)? Thank you. Caruthers (talk) 21:05, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

I think you mean en:WP:DICK, a link to an essay on WP so well-established that it's in the Wikipedia: namespace and has its own uppercased shortform redirect. Its relevance is obvious.
By the way, who are you socking for? Andy Dingley (talk) 01:08, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
en:WP:DICK sure is pretty well known, just like en:WP:DUCK which is also appropriate in this case. Multichill (talk) 20:31, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Upload a new version of this file

Hallo. As I noticed you was who proposed a File naming policy. I found as a problem that when an user uses the link "Upload a new version of this file", the upload dialog in such case provides no explanation what is meaned by "new version of the file" and no warning that different files (even if it's a different photo of the identical or a similar subject] must be uploaded under a new name. A detailed policy should still get more precised but some of users haven't notion that overwriting of files can be problematic. Could you initiate a substantial change of upload form for overwriting of files? --ŠJů (talk) 16:31, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

I'm trying to reduce the number of activities on Commons and focus on certain ones. Maybe you could do it yourself or you can find someone else willing to improve this? Multichill (talk) 17:43, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

mw-license extension changes

Please have a look at Template talk:Information#RTL. Could you check whether this problem was introduced in other templates when converted to using mw-license extension messages? --Slomox (talk) 23:32, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, I thought I caught all of those. Will check the templates. Multichill (talk) 08:05, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

GeographBot

OK, I am getting a little irritated by GeographBot's stupidity on upload now. It will always put some images in the wrong locations as it will get the location wrong sometimes (especially as categories care about subject location not camera location) - that's not a problem. Putting rural snaps into the category of the nearest city (for example File:Valley below Membland - geograph.org.uk -_295892.jpg) is unfortunate, as is the bot failing to identify anything and just putting it in the county category. But in both cases, the categorisation isn't completely incorrect and whilst it should be avoided, the category it gets placed in is likely to be maintained by someone who can correctly categorise the file.

However, some of yesterday's batch have ended up in wildly incorrect categories. Geograph images should never be in Category:Melbourne or Category:Boston (but they are [1] and [2]). Not only are those categories severely wrong, their maintainers may not know what to do with a file that has no direct interest to them and they may cause problems for users. The first image I mentioned could be correctly used as a "Rural view near Plymouth", but if someone used this as a "Rural view near Boston, MA"...

(As you know) I've already mentioned this on Commons:Batch uploading/Geograph. However, if GeographBot continues to upload files and placing them in categories for different countries, I am inclined to block it as malfunctioning.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:48, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

I am not happy that you have blocked User:SLQbot as there is no reason to assume that I would use the bot inappropriately. Also you have neglected to respond at Commons:Bots/Requests/SLQbot. Can you at least remove the autoblock as I am currently needing to break through the autoblock, which is only possible because I am an admin on Commons. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ljubo Karaman.jpg

Dear Colleague Multichill

I just wrote to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Ljubo Karaman.jpg, few sentences, but let me repeat them for you;
Ljubo Karaman.jpg and incriminated photo resembles, but is not the same - my file is still the original work!

  1. My file is an color image (It is a 50% difference at least)
  2. My file is a drawing (computer) for which he served as a template this incriminated photo (and this is a 50% difference at least)

This is the same procedure which was used also by Andy Warhol for his Marilyn Diptych, he took an existing Black-and-white photo of same Marilyn and made original artwork. I do not want to be so pretentious and argue that my file is a work of art, but can serve as an illustration of one's appearance. I have in mind the fact that Wikimedia Commons it is not a trash can, and a much more significant persons have no picture, but it's not my fault.

Thank you for your attention and my regards

Categories

I've left an extensive comment on the batch upload page with several points to consider. As for disambiguation, please don't disambiguate everything by default. There are villages called Toronto, New York and Moscow in the UK but each of these are clearly inconsequential places compared to the Toronto, New York and Moscow (and yes Category:Moscow has at least some Geograph content - it would be silly to move Category:Moscow to Category:Moscow, Russia just because of the Scottish village.

The point at which to disambiguate probably needs discussion somewhere - the VP maybe?--Nilfanion (talk) 10:56, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

File:Trafo_schema.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

CC PD mark

Hi,

I wondered if you noticed the answer on the thread you initiated on the VP ?

I went bold and overwrote the link to the main page. As for the "rel" attribute, it appears there is no way to do that at the moment — there is mw:Extension:Link_Attributes that appears to address that.

Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 22:20, 25 December 2010 (UTC)

I thought I left a response, but it looks like I didn't do that.
I talked with some of the CC guys and I told them to just change their link parser to strip off the deed.xx part. The are going to look into that. The syntax of that extension looks awful, we should probably come up with something better. Multichill (talk) 13:05, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Wouter (talk) 16:43, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Trust

you had a good christmas - and will have a new year that is a good one - I have started tampering with the Starr's scaevola taccada people portraits which you have had previous dealings with - my sense of order is offended greatly at having a plant name against images of people with virtually nothing to do with the plant

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Starr_010526-1341_Scaevola_taccada.jpg - possibly the starrs and the location in the cats only?

I have the distinct impression these images should be at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Forest_and_Kim_Starr renamed and specifically identified as 'family portraits' - rather than contextual pictures of the scaevola as it is found on hawaii

your opinion or guidance on this issue would be appreciated - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 04:56, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Ok no comment - but some action - thank you for that - and all the best for the new year - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 23:45, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I wanted to respond here, but forgot it. Anyway, some of these images do contain Scaevola taccada, but just somewhere hidden in the background. I would just say: Don't spend too much time on it :-). Multichill (talk) 07:54, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
hmm - a credibility test if there ever was one :) - 98% image of people and sky - 2 % scaevola taccada - and your advice - Im not coming back to it for a while anyways - cheers SatuSuro (talk) 08:06, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
