Could you look through the blocking/user talk templates and update your sooper awesome table? Thanks in advance.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:09, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Looks like you already added them. Multichill (talk) 17:45, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Could you possibly add some text to this page (which you created) to indicate its intended scope? Right now, it seems to be a bit of a hodgepodge. If it is specific to the plant in Singapore, it should say so, and several images here should be recategorized elsewhere. If it is to cover all old Ford plants, then it is poorly named (and no doubt there are some images or categories elsewhere that would belong here). - Jmabel ! talk 06:39, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Butterflies uncategorized by A.Cassidy

A. Cassidy continues to upload very useful images of Lycaenidae but without a category. I have fixed a few and see you have too, more precisely. These are very useful images and excellent but very diificult to find from the jpeg titles.I left him a note on his talk page and we will see what happens. If the images remain uncategorised is this automaticaly tagged? Not sure what the system is. Can you help if all else fails?217.43.148.161 21:34, 1 December 2008 (UTC)Sorry forgot to log in Notafly (talk) 21:38, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Notafly, this makes it a lot easier to find these contributions of Accassidy. I don't think i thouched any of those uploads, but my bots did. I have several bots, this is the order they work in:
 1. Bot tags all uncategorized files with Uncategorized (example)
 2. Bot tries to categorize images based on their usage in galleries
 3. Bot tries to categorize images based on their usage in wikipedia (example
 4. Bot notifies users of their uncategorized uploads (example)
So these bots will either put the image in a category or leave it tagged with Uncategorized with the uploader notified. Multichill (talk) 21:58, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Bot-Categorisation

Since a few days I find a lot of pictures moved by your bot to Category:Buildings by function, for example Image:Bearbaiting.jpg, Image:Cel33.JPG etc. This does not make sense, as this cat is a topcat and should not used to put files. It causes a lot of work, and I just wonder what is more work: to put the right cats to "homeless" images in the first place or clean behind your bot. This is also effecting other cats that I clean on the way: Why would you put Image:Nl-Blokhut-article.ogg and Image:Bearbaiting.jpg in Category:Home? Is that "CommonSense"? Perhaps it would be possible to teach the bot to avoid certain cats (blacklist)? IMHO it is sometimes better to put less cats than a lot of wrong ones. TomAlt (talk) 23:48, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Same problem with Category:Architects. Image:AM Hunting Lodge.jpg and Image:Puente Colgante.jpg are totally wrong there! TomAlt (talk) 23:52, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
This is a bot... it just makes a best-guess at what categories images should be in. If the image had been categorized properly to being with then the bot would never have visited the image. J.smith (talk) 01:43, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
I know that. But IMHO opinion bots should help to minimize work for wikipedians, not cause extra work. Can't the bot be made smarter, so that it for example omit cats with a "Categories requiring diffusion" label / cat? Or uses for example generally Category:Buildings instead of any of its subcats? TomAlt (talk) 13:52, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
The images have to be categorized manually anyway, the bot makes it easier by adding suggestions. So the bot is reducing the amount of work to be done. If you come across these kind of images, just fix it. Multichill (talk) 17:09, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
It is simple: it is more work to first remove 5 totally wrong cats before you have to add proper ones by hand anyway. The suggestions your bot makes are (as far as I see in my area) in the majority nonsens and do not make it easier, but clutter up top-categories. This again misleads unexpirienced users to put more files in these cats. I appreciate that bots take a load of monkey work, but they have to work proper and not cause more mess in the cat system. If you could improve the "guidelines" for this bot i'm sure he could of much bigger help! TomAlt (talk) 18:45, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Maybe you dont like it because you're not using it the right way. When you've checked a image you're supposed to remove the template. At Image:Begijnhof Sint-Truiden2.JPG, Image:Begijnhof Sint-Truiden3.JPG, Image:Begijnhof Sint-Truiden4.JPG & Image:Begijnhof Sint-Truiden5.JPG you categorized the image (great!) but you didn't remove the template leaving extra work for other users. You can easily remove the template, just click the Check them now! Multichill (talk) 19:17, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, if that is the case it would have to be explained in the template that it can/should be removed after re-categorisation. I do not remove templates other users or bots set if I nobody tells me. I will do this in future.
Anyway, this is not an answer to my critical comments. It's not that I don't "like" your bot, I just think it causes unnecessary work and "sets an bad example" by adding wrong categories that have to be removed again. TomAlt (talk) 22:14, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

(unindent) I have to agree with TomAlt (and others) that this bot is not very helpful as is. It creates more work than it saves and, worse still, it may encourage inexperienced users to miscategorize images. Simply adding the uncategorized tag to images that have no categories is a better option than adding a bunch of categories that (a) don't make sense and (b) violate COM:C#Over-categorization. --Sanfranman59 (talk) 22:56, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm coming late on this, but I rather agree with you. On the other side, the part with the usage is very practical to quickly check the information.
My main concern about this procedure is that the bot is converting 50.000 uncategorised images (i.e. they don't bother anyone except that they lack a cat.) to 50.000 images that disturb the whole category structure and are actually still uncategorised. Vonvon 18:19, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
It all depends how you see it. Very few people have the courage to tackle continuously the 200000 uncategorised images as general categorisation jobs; most prefer to work in a specific area with a specific specialisation. The bot categorisation connects the images most of the time in all sorts of directions where specialists are working where they try to keep their categories tidy. So the bot spreads the uncategorised images (most of the time) in the good direction and distributes the categorisation work to the many people working in their little corner. If you provide constructive feedback about strange bot behaviour, in the end it will become better, as it has been improved dramatically the last months. --Foroa (talk) 18:37, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. I guess very few people are categorising naked images out of the blue (for which the first action to do is then check usage), and for that the bot is good. Vonvon (talk) 20:00, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Generally I agree with the idea of bot categorisation job, but obviously it works bad in many cases, just like that. For last few days I've been cleaning Category:Charts by type. Images inside it (photos of towns, buildings, people, or maps, flags, coats of arms...) were all over-categorized without any sense. They were put also to such categories as Category:Alphabets, Category:Diagrams by type, Category:Categories by topic, Category:Demography. In many cases the right (or almost right) category was assigned as well, so why the bot puts so many redundant categories additionaly? I want to clean it up, but if the bot puts more and more images into these cats, I will soon quit as this seems to be sisyphean task. --Anniolek talk 17:22, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I also think very much that this bot-categorization makes things worse at the moment. Look at the category:coordinate systems, which is a mathematical category and is now filled up with 500 houses, please look! (about 90 percent of the content). The category geometry (declared to be a main category) is filled up with 100 symbols no one is interested in (category:problems was also made a mess). It is definitely better if some item are not categorized instead of filling up important categories. I am interested in mathematical categories, to keep them useful for mathematicians, but I do not want to remove houses out of cordinate systems.--Darapti (talk) 22:37, 2 December 2008 (UTC) Therefore I have the following proposal

just more work

Dear BotMultichill, I really (!) appreciate that you're categorizing uncategorized images... but please use a more reasonable logarithm or simply don't blindly rely on CommonSense. I've now repeatedly found images which you have categorized for no apparent reasons in numerous categories, which were partly redundant and partly just not applicable. Using CommonSense is just not a solution--I haven't yet seen a single case where CommonSense worked just well. That leads to a lot of extra work for those who now need to remove the images from those images--likely more work than categorizing the images from scratch. (After all, couldn't there be a reason that you used category X?... and then I go looking and trying to understand what a bot did!) Nobody gains anything out of this.

So please, please, please, dear bot, either convince Multichill that he should re-design you, or that he should oversee everything you do... or please just don't set to work anymore. As I say, I really appreciate work on categories. But not in a way that I constantly have to clear up after you. Thanks a lot (!), Ibn Battuta (talk) 19:30, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Multichill, as I have been recategorizing a couple of hundred pics from category:People of Germany in the last few days, I accompany Ibn Battuta here: Lots of Maps and landscapes in a people's category that should be empty anyway, and vice versa every person that has the word "Prussia" in his/her article, gets the category Category:Prussia-Maps (like this one. No chance to keep this main category empty (as it should be) when your bot fills it continouusly.. I don't like working against a bot, what can we do? How does your bot work? Maybe we can find a better algorithm, maybe it's worth talking with Duesentrieb? Please give us a sign ,-) Thank you! --Elya (talk) 18:52, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Hi Elya, this was the cause of the problem. See the current suggestions. Multichill (talk) 19:07, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Most of the time, when clicking on a link to the toolserver, my system does nothing. Toolserver seems to be only avaialble 50 % of the time and for the other half, results in an error in half of the cases. Anyway, the bot fills up all sorts of non-existing categories, which is very bad. I just created a couple of such populated non-existing categories, but some are very much redundant with existing categories. If this is a way to force uniformity with the en:wiki categories, just let us know. --Foroa (talk) 09:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Toolserver is unstable lately yes. Can you provide me with some samples so i can see what went wrong? Multichill (talk) 13:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Toolserver is almost always unstable for me. From Special:WantedCategories: category:Ruling clans of India, category:Historical Indian empires, category:Lists of monarchs. But anyway, and as shown above, I don't think that the bot should ever include non existing categories. --Foroa (talk) 13:27, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
I did a couple of spot checks in the categories mentioned above (in the top 5 of Special:WantedCategories) and all images seem categorised by BotMultichill in those three categories that where non-existent at that time, and all images seem to refer to the Kushan Empire gallery that had those three categories. --Foroa (talk) 18:00, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
After some checking, I think that "general" galleries that are having more than 2 or 3 categories should not be used to "induce" categories. --Foroa (talk) 07:50, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
Bot isn't supposed to add non-existant categories. Maybe a couple of images where put in a non-existant category because the gallery was categorized in one of these categories, but most of the images in Special:WantedCategories are not categorized by my bot. Multichill (talk) 17:41, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Wrong bot edit

FYI, your bot made a wrong edit here. Guinea and Papua New Guinea are separate countries on separate continents. —Wknight94 (talk) 23:33, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Here's an unrelated weird one: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Wells_in_France&diff=15500963&oldid=8404055. In fact, much of Category:Furniture designers from France looks wrong now. —Wknight94 (talk) 04:11, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Editing Comments

I'm new and I need help categorizing the images. Actually, I thought I'd already done that by including them under "Wenzhou" and "Universities & Colleges". Surprisingly, the upload form placed this Relevant info into the comment box (very annoying)!. I was wondering if you could also fix that for me on the pictures I uploaded. And perhaps give me a decent template, 'cause I'm about to expand the gallery so that I can use the images for the w:Wenzhou Medical College page. Thank you. Compendium wmc (talk) 10:14, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Everything was fine until you blanked the page. Comment is always filled with the information you enter, that's just how mediawiki works. I tagged Image:WMC University Town.png as no permission because the you didn't take the image yourself. Multichill (talk) 08:46, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Categories

You suggested I add categories to a recently uploaded image. Would you give me a lead on the mechanism for this? Thanks. ACCassidy (talk) 22:52, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Accassidy, thanks for your uploads. You already did the difficult part (identification), this makes categorization a lot easier. First enable hotcat, you can do this by clicking my preferences -> Gadgets -> Tools for categories -> Hot Cat. You now have the an easy tool for adding categories. All your images appear to be butterflies. For a lot of Genus categories have been created, so trying the genus is a good start. Otherwise the enwp might be a good start, lookup the butterlfy, click the category and you'll probably find a link to Commons. Category:Lepidoptera is probably also good start. Multichill (talk) 08:59, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Ikbal Ali Shah and Jan Fishan Khan

The bot seems to have gone screwy categorizing Ikbal Ali Shah and Jan Fishan Khan (for latter, see below):

//Check categories|year=2008|month=November|day=17
|lang1=en|wiki1=wikipedia|article1=Idries_Shah
|lang2=en|wiki2=wikipedia|article2=Saira_Shah
|lang3=en|wiki3=wikipedia|article3=Omar_Ali-Shah
|lang4=en|wiki4=wikipedia|article4=Tahir_Shah
|lang5=en|wiki5=wikipedia|article5=Sirdar_Ikbal_Ali_Shah
|lang6=en|wiki6=wikipedia|article6=Saira_Elizabeth_Luiza_Shah
|lang7=en|wiki7=wikipedia|article7=Amina_Shah
|lang8=en|wiki8=wikipedia|article8=Jan_Fishan_Khan
|lang9=en|wiki9=wikipedia|article9=Arif_Ali-Shah
|lang10=en|wiki10=wikipedia|article10=Safia_Shah
//

This produced all sorts of mad categories taken from the wrong Wikipedia pages. Now sorted manually. Esowteric (talk) 18:23, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

That's because those images are in use at en:Tahir Shah. If the bot would always be right i wouldn't have to tag it with Check categories. Multichill (talk) 19:34, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Media needing categories as of ....

Groeten Wouter (talk) 21:25, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

categories - commonsense tool

thanks for the tool help, i'm just uploading images as necessary for bio, and house articles. the categories seem a little hard to use to me, but i will add if i can figure out. Pohick2 (talk) 01:58, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Great, if you add the image to an article at wikipedia you can get suggestions by clicking find categories (top of the page, 9th link). Multichill (talk) 14:52, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Bundesarchiv

I'm trying to develop categories for the material from the Bundesarchiv, and Wuzur and Duesentrieb proposed to inform you. IMHO the Categories concerning the German Democratic Republic and the Third Reich need partially reorganisation. I started with the help of Wuzur. Please have a Look at:

Economy_of_the_German_Democratic_Republic

where I started to build a basic structure

and

Third Reich

where I started to reorganize the structure, but where many problems are left, e.g. the categories for persons of the third reich.

What do you think of the "concept", shall I continue? -- Mbdortmund (talk) 12:06, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Mbdortmund, thanks for you message. Because of the amount of images it might be wise to create more specific categories. Category:Germany should be the root of all these Germany related categories. A user should be able to easily find these new categories, for example, i think Category:Economy of the German Democratic Republic should be a subcategory of Category:Economy of Germany. Otherwise images might be hard to find because they're spread around subcategories of Category:German Empire, Category:Weimar Republic, Category:Third Reich, Category:German Democratic Republic & Category:Germany. Multichill (talk) 13:23, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Bot refinements

I don't know if it's your bot which is responsible but there is some disquiet about dumb bots littering categories with inappropriate files on VP. After going through some of the files in Category:Media needing category review in use at zh.wikipedia, may I suggest that your categorisation bots use disabled cats rather than actually placing a file into a category. With the only active cats being the holding categories such as Category:Media needing category review in use at zh.wikipedia. This will serve as a suggestion as to where a file may go and an easy way to navigate to that cat to see if it is suitable, without possibly placing a file in a wrong category.

Furthermore if you want to make things really simple you could include these suggested categories in the template box your bot uses with a little check box next to each. Anyone categorising could then tick only the categories he or she thinks appropriate with these categories being activated when a "categories checked" button is activated. KTo288 (talk) 13:57, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

You're talking about Commons:Village pump#Ridiculous categorization? I already commented over there. As for your suggestion, that's a nice suggestion, but i'm not going to implement it. The point of the bot is to get images categorized, this way more people stumble across images needing human attention. You can improve zh wiki results by adding Commonscat templates (example). I'll have my bot do a run of the zh wikipedia. I'm rescanning all wikipedia's anyway to improve the categorization results. Multichill (talk) 13:41, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
I suppose thats one way to fix the mountain of uncategorised files, but you're relying basically on people being provoked enough by an image in the wrong place to fix the categorisation, well I guess you have a thick enough skin to ride out the flak from irritated users.
On another tack is there someway we can prevent the uploading of uncategorised images, that at least one category must be added during the upload process. Anyway thanks for doing your best against the flood that is Category:Media needing categories.KTo288 (talk) 13:56, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
A lot of people work on a subset of our category tree. I hope these users will help by checking the files being automaticly categorized in their playfield. The huge backlog we have (topped at about 300.000+ images) makes small errors become big. I used this automatic categorization bot for about 70.000 files and i still have about 70.000 more images (out of 200.000) which could be possible categorized this way. I'm trying not to go to fast so the humans can keep up.
I don't think blocking the uploading of uncategorized files is the solution. Now uncategorized files will get tagged within an hour and the uploader will get a notification. One bot monitors all uploads/recent changes and tags uncategorized files, another bot notifies users of their uncategorized uploads. I fired up the notification bot about 2 weeks ago. I hope this helps in decreasing that huge pile or at least stop it from increasing. Multichill (talk) 15:01, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
That many, well I guess I should get back to the levee and categorise some files. KTo288 (talk) 17:56, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Images from the German Federal Archive

In the categories you are creating for these images, the "location=" parameter should correspond to an existing Commons category name. In some cases, you have used a location that is a category redirect, rather than an actual category. These have to be fixed manually, which is a pain. If you can, please try to confirm that the "location=" parameter is not pointing to a redirected category. Thanks. --R'n'B (talk) 14:06, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

I created a lot of categories (4000+), some ended up in redirect categories. I'm not able to check if it's a redirect category, but it looks like it's fixed already. Multichill (talk) 13:11, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Alleged uncategorized images

Your bot has tagged my US Army Institute of Heraldry images as being uncategorized.

Actually, ALL of my images you have tagged are categorized.

If you check, the License Tag PD-USGov-Military-Army-USAIOH also doubles as a category, as it places all inages in the category of US Army Institute of Heraldry Images.

If you look at the baseline of this talk page, placing that tag here has placed this talk page in that category as well.

Finally, the single largest user of these images is the Military History group over on Wikipedia, and their stuff over on Wikisource.

CORNELIUSSEON (talk) 08:13, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi CORNELIUSSEON, this is not a topic category. It's a source/licence category. I converted the nameing to the standard PD US source/licence convention. It's now available at Category:PD US Army USAIOH. All image should be place in one or more subcategories of Category:Heraldry (lot of them are already). Multichill (talk) 19:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

category of Image:麼-order.gif - bug report

Hi, (How can a machine answer in a discussion, anyway... ;o)

Your 'bot seems to consider that Image:麼-order.gif is uncategorized, but the model template:SOlicense provides a category when expanded. Maybe the test should be made on an expanded version of the page?

Feel free to discuss it, Michelet-密是力 (talk) 06:53, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

The licence template (SOlicense) contains a bad category hack. This is bad practice and should not be used. If you need some help removing this hack, leave me a note. Multichill (talk) 10:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

What do you mean by "bad category hack" ? (and I may use some help, yes, although this is not my model). Michelet-密是力 (talk) 19:06, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

to add topic categories. Multichill (talk) 13:47, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
A category hack, OK, useful since the model may be used with several different scripts used as parameter. But why do you call it a "bad" hack? Anyway: would it be better with a {{#swich{}|aaa=| etc }} ? Michelet-密是力 (talk) 06:38, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
No, not really. Templates should not be used to add topic categories. Multichill (talk) 22:04, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

User Lmbuga

Dear Multichill: As an answer to the request of user talk:Lmbuga at Spanish café I translate his main last intervention about the discusion in [1]. He wants all the editors involved in the discussion to have access to it. I am afraid this is by now purely anecdotical because afterwards he said that he was going to block himself forever immediately. So now we don´t have where to interact.

Cheers!.----Balbo (talk) 12:21, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

The real problem, (that for sure nobody understands).

The matter is that all this issue (the incorrect blocking that I made for two hours) was finished (enough clarified) before Mike. Lifeguard was involved. The behavior of the other users and mine was exquisite. I wouldn´t have had reason to ask them if they considered that my error was a reason for me to leave the administratorship. However, I preferred that transparency to be able to continue easily.

Mike-lifeguard reopened the topic. In addition he showed new data that favored my discredit and that involved that I should explain all again, make new clarifications. It was almost five o`clock in the morning and I had been working on Commons and Galipedia (although the work didn´t seem very productive, work of revision and control) from four o´clock p.m., with only two stops of no more than two hours each).

I had to explain that I din´d see his message of the 14 or 15 of November in my talk page because he didn´t write it at the end of the page (of maybe I just didn´t see it or I didn´t remember it). I had to explain that I have as a motto not to edit in case that I am waiting for an answer (unless I do it to give another answer).

I had to explain that, out of my 18.259 editions in Commons (even more in Galipedia) done in over two years, 2698 were done in user pages and almost all of thm intending to teach the rules, and they were made with lots of patience.

I had to explain that very few times I chose to block and that I don´t remember blocking anybody for longer than 3 days (although someone may have happened). I had to explain that it is the first time that I am told not to have attended a request in my user page. I had to explain that It is the first time (I guess) that I am wrong in a blocking. (I have made at least twice an error for the same reason. Mike.lifeguard has proved it when all the matter was clarified).

(I don´t criticize Mike.Lifeguard because of his behaviour or because of his thoughtlessness, he should have used the mail to contact me, as the affair was over. Seing the finished affair, his ego didn´t let him a rematch as I had the thoughtlessness of not having answered him, but it was originally his error, as he didn’t put the answer at the end of my talk page or the error was mine and his words passed unnoticed to me. Anyway, his attitude was too much for me.

I had to explain that opening the matter when it was already closed and pointing at a new error of mine is to give wings to those who hound me. I had to explain the cause of that feeling of being hounded. I had to explain that if we administrators must be careful with the users, we must be even much more with other administrators. I would have to explain the situation of weakness of the administrators. I should have to explain the situation of weakness of the administrators with a public real identity. I would have to explain that I couldn´t sleep tht night, (the reason of why I continued editing), that I had a headache for the lack of rest and I couldn´t go to work the next day. And that I am not in the mood of not sleeping of sleeping bad because of what happens in Commons or in Galipedia. I would have to explain that I am not in the mood for letting that what happens in Commons affects in my job.

I should have to explain that usually, and to be effective, as I have lots of work to be done, I do things too fast, and that because of this (I know that some people is waiting for my eventual errors to thrash me), every time I see a message in my talk page by heart beats fasters. I should have to explain that I am not God, that I don´t feel to be God, but that 2698 editions in user talk pages, in the way thy were made (extension, dedication...) I deserve that the warning may be done in private, specially when the matter Is finished and also is my behaviour in it.)

I can not be longer in Commons. I only would accept it if I could continue clean, I say, whith an impeccable history, without a history, free of past critics to reproach. I am tried of being scared. ¿What would happen in my next error, as I am convinced that ther will be other if I continue? ¿How long would I last in having new displeasures for trying to be more effective than what I am able to be?

I would have to explain all this in English. I cannot and all the dedication is not worthwhile, as I am nobody to change anything.

Good luck to everybody, including Mike.lifeguard. Lmbuga.

End of the translation. Cheers!--Balbo (talk) 12:40, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the translation Balbo. I don't understand the big fuss this is causing. Lmbuga made a mistake, we pointed out he made a mistake, mistake was fixed. After that i got lost, Multichill (talk) 12:53, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
It seems that this episode only triggered the dimission, but that there were already other former points of friction. It is a pity. By the way, (and not related to Lmbuga´s episode) I am modifying a page that you marked as a redirection page to Category:Stone buildings: Category:Stone houses. This is because the former is overcrowded and I am trying to separate images by use. Please, feel free to tell me your opinion if you don´t agree. Cheers!--Balbo (talk) 22:02, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
It sure is a pity. I didn't mark that category for redirection, my bot only changed the template. I converted it to a normal category, have fun with it. Multichill (talk) 22:12, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, i think it would be usefull if this category is not a Hiddencat, it can be removed than with Hot Cat (or?) and people will remove it by seeing, that many images are allready correctly categorized. --Martin H. (talk) 03:42, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Hotcat works already (first thing i tried). I made it hidden because it is a meta category. I don't know if making it not hidden would improve the process. You could put some text on the template. Multichill (talk) 19:11, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
I now see, that the tag is mostly replaced by users correctly, my concern has not been confirmed, so everything is fine with the hiddencat. --Martin H. (talk) 10:29, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Maps of districts of Styria, Austria

Hello. I've read your message on my talk page and I finished categorizing my images. I've only one question left: How can I have images deleted when they are not in use?

This Image, for example, is the same as this, but only the second one is in use.

Image:Bad Blumau in Steiermark is also not needed.

Thank you, -- Joschi Täubler 10:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

You can use Duplicate like this. Multichill (talk) 18:37, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Categorizing: Maciej Jędrzejko. jpeg

Hi! I would love to do it, but I got lost; would you please tell me what I need to do to categorize the image? Yours, Paweł Jędrzejko 80.55.228.10 09:58, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Like this, but you didn't remove the uncategorized template. I removed the template. Multichill (talk) 18:35, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Bot message

Hi Multichill! I just got a message from your bot about categorization. While I appreciate the reminder (it was actually someone else's image I replaced with a new one, and therefore forgot to categorize), I was wondering if you could make the message friendly to established users. It seems rather rude to me to tell someone who has been active for years to "Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects", among other things. Thanks, Ynhockey (talk) 14:16, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

It's just the standard template at Template:Please link images, if you don't like the wording, go ahead and change it. Multichill (talk) 18:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
That's just the thing, it's beyond me why this bot has to use the template message meant for new users. It is bad form to warn established users with any kind of template message reminding of the project's norms. In fact, I don't see why this bot needs to leave any kind of message. Just make it say: "Hi, please categorize the following images:", or something. -- Ynhockey (talk) 01:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
What makes you think that template is only intented for new users? Multichill (talk) 22:01, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Ji! I agree with Ynhockey. Last map I putted goes into the categories of war maps, history map, maps about Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the recevied messege I did not found any explanation of how could I add that info to my map. --Čeha (talk) 14:41, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

It includes a link to Commons:Categories, please read that page. Multichill (talk) 18:26, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

pages marked for deletion - no cat's

Hi!

I received a (bot?) message on my talkpage about uncategorized images. The image in question was marked for deletion. I know about the importance of cat's, but if I mark an image for deletion ({{bad name- or {{speedy-templ. or whatever) it seems better to me to remove the cat's. But from now on I can add Category:Deletion requests. OK? Kind greetings, maarten Sepp (talk) 15:17, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Don't bother if the image gets deleted anyway. Multichill (talk) 18:18, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Wrong year category

You applied Category:1993 to this image. I don't think that matches. It's when the band was founded, but the image is taken in 2008, so that year would be more appropriate. Of course, I can change this, but I cannot for all your edits. I fear CommonSense's algorithm was wrong and the category shouldn't have been applied. --Eike Sauer (talk) 18:05, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Users should categorize their uploads. If they fail to do that my bot will try to figure out categories. Some categories will be right, some will be wrong, that's why all these images are tagged with Check categories. Multichill (talk) 18:17, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello Multichill,

Contested Islands between Romania and Ukraine.jpg (since 24 November 2008) is one of my maps, maked in Photoshop

Image:NavaStruma.gif (since 30 November 2008) is a drawing, since the witnesses.

Wilhelm Filderman.jpg (since 14 December 2008) is a picture from the romanian Wikipedia article about this person.

Soimos.jpg (since 14 December 2008) is one of my old pictures, from my collection.

Best wishes,--Spiridon MANOLIU (talk) 18:12, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Your Bot bit, but about

Thank you for alerting me to my failure to categorize a number of ogg files I uploaded yesterday. An oversight I have since corrected.

However, your bot also said I had not categorized Image:NielsGade.jpg. This is a canard. I assume it is some arcane bug in your bot, that you might want to fix. --Ravpapa 11:48, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

No bug or canard, my bot leaves a notification, you add categories. Multichill (talk) 21:11, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

Later: I figured out the source of the confusion. Your bot added to a message on my talk page that was already there previously, rather than writing a new message. Clever. My mistake. Sorry. --Ravpapa 16:56, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Yup, my bot only leaves the message once (unless you remove it/archive it). Multichill (talk) 18:05, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

You lost me here, is this German humor? Never really understood that. Multichill (talk) 19:37, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi, being a nut in programming, I just see that you removed parts from national languages' templates. Can you explain to a programmer=0 what this will "do"? The template was created, after a design I did, by an imo highly skilled person/human being which is not active any more on COM and WPs (due to a ~letal accident, in August 2008, I'm afraid).

Thanks. Wolfgang 17:49, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

But of course. This edit was to get the template working again. The language templates should never be transcluded directly therefore they should not add categories, only the main template should do this. Multichill (talk) 18:02, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, you're wrong on this point. I suppose you're native EN speaker [unless you'd be German...]? Someone with en=0 would hardly ever agree to sign a "contract" which he/she could not even read, nor understand.
So, THIS was THE exception of an up-to-that-point "general way to do it". It was abpout possibly begging creative artists to leave part of their work to WP/COM, whilst allowing a (to wp/com) acceptable minimum of self-advertizing. Maybe, there should be talk on VP, or wherever, about that. Wolfgang 18:12, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
PS:I meanwhile see you're Dutch (I'd not care about such very much, therefore I did not look up earlier). There's nothing else to add to my comment. Wolfgang 18:19, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Unported CC licences are English and are translated, but the English version is the base. We also have country specific licences like and . Multichill (talk) 20:12, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for this information. However, neither Switzerland nor Austria (fortunately) are part of "Germany" (as that flag suggests. Might I tag or move to ~/at? ;))
I actually cannot take the time for such soon, being more than just busy with my vG-cleanup&repair project, see e.g. User talk:W./Van Gogh by date and location or the vG-CAT talk page. As of now, the /de template being used but by one person AFAIK, this had priority ~"very_low". I'll probably contact you on the _cc issue by end of January, but badly would need help+feedback for the vG project and on Painting where traffic is ~zero. Looking forward to your answer, i'll stop this conversaion afterwards (what they called over-and-out in radio telephony). Best, Wolfgang 05:15, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Note: I am his mentor; this picture was his first work in WP (an until now his only work; he is about 75 years old and does not understand all what happened, but he never is interested to have an user-page in commons, so that he asked me for deleting this page). Proposal for bot categorizing

The bot categorizes only into categories of the form

name of category/bot proposal (or name of category/bot or category (bot) )

this is then a subcategory of the category (this can be created automatically).

By that we are sure that wrong bot-categorization does not fill up categories with nonsense. People who are interested in the maintainance of the category can then visit the /bot subcategory and look whether there is really something in it which belongs to the category and can remove the 'bot'. Then the bot is really a proposal thing which can help and which does not destroy anything, and the final decision is made by humans. I think this would give the best out of two worlds and would be a very easy solution to this problem.--Darapti (talk) 22:37, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Nah, that will just move it out of sight. Multichill (talk) 22:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
Of course, it should be out of sight for users who are looking for images which they want to use in a course or for an article. The main point of a category is to find suitable images there, and it is very annoying to walk through a mess of pictures. Have a look at Category:Coordinate systems (do you really think that should be in sight?). I do not yet see a proposal from you how to avoid such a thing or who will clean it up. --Darapti (talk) 00:51, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
The main source of problems is enwp, in this case it looks like en:Category:Lists of coordinates is causing the problems. I switched the bot to a much slower pace. The bot now only checks yesterdays uploads. This produces about 200-300 results easy day. I'm posting a message to village pump to see if more people can help with checking the daily catch. Thanks for deleting all those .gif maps that I requested for deletion: because .gifs haven't been displaying well on Wikipedia recently, I had to upload new versions in .png format, and the .gifs were useless. It's good that all those useless files aren't sitting around anymore :-) Nyttend (talk) 21:07, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Usually we don't do superseding but with you being the author of all files and no usage i didn't see a problem. Multichill (talk) 18:27, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Please link images

Done! Sorry and thanks for the message. greetings --gian_d (talk) 00:15, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

No problem, glad you found some categories. Multichill (talk) 17:44, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Categories

Got the message that certain shots aren't linked to anything. They are, but maybe not categorized. Is this compulsory?

Sardaka (talk) 09:18, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Yup, please see Commons:Categories. I recommend enabling hotcat for easy adding of categories. You can do this by clicking my preferences -> Gadgets -> Tools for categories -> Hot Cat. Multichill (talk) 13:36, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Photographs

Hi there, I'm Catsynth, from the catalan-language Wikipedia. I've recently uploaded a couple of Depeche Mode photographs; how can I select a cathegory for them? Thanks in advance. --Catsynth (talk) 13:11, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Catsynth, you can categorize the images like this. Multichill (talk) 17:48, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Multichill, thanks for your help. I'll keep it inmind for future uploads. By the way, merry Christmas!--Catsynth (talk) 19:16, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Uncategorized Images

Hello, You recently sent me a very polite note about some uncategorized images I uploaded. Thank you. I would have put the pics in a category but didn't quite understand how. At any rate, there was a problem. I started a User page on 18 DEC and by 21 DEC I had decided to forget I ever found Wikipedia because of the ridiculous, obnoxious, and abusive behavior of OuroborosCobra. Thank you for being so welcoming--I wish I had heard from you sooner. Cadet Programs (talk) 01:38, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Don't let one user scare you away! Being new here can be hard, but after a while you'll start to like it. Multichill (talk) 17:43, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I've seen that you want to "categorize" some of the photos I've made and uploaded on Commons/Wikipedia. I don't know how to do it. I'm lost in your multiple pages. Scott Ross (image is: Scott_Ross.jpg) is an american keyboardist. Please help me. Thanks. User Talk: MenerbesMenerbes (talk) 17:35, 23 December 2008 (UTC)18:35

Does this look alright to you? Multichill (talk) 17:41, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Unlinked Images

Thx for the message. I'll add some link as soon as possible since it's almost Christmas. Hope you accept that.

404?

Roinpa (talk) 11:32, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Categorizing images

Hi! Read your comment on my talk page. I'd like to add categories to my pictures but I don't understand how to do it when an image is already uploaded. Please forgive my stupidity (I couldn't figure it out with the general rules) and have a merry Christmas! Pel thal (talk) 17:07, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Looks like you figured it out already! Have fun here at Commons. Multichill (talk) 17:35, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Uncategorized because of Vandalism

Hello, I just noticed that a vandal vandalized two image description pages at 1st of December ([2] and [3]), weeks later it was removed. But an hour after the vandalism your bot BotMultichill saw that the vandalized pictures were uncategorized. A day later the bot added categories. Only a few weeks later the vandalism was removed.
Can you teach your bot to look up if an uncategorized picture had had categories? I think it would be great, if it could work this way:

 1. Your bot finds an uncategorized picture and recognizes that it has had categories.
 2. Your bot tells somebody that somebody has to look for the picture because it is probably vandalized.

--Stefan Knauf (talk) 15:41, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Thought about that a while ago, but it's probably to difficult, or at least not the job of the bot. We do need more vandal fighting tools/vandal fighters here at Commons. I often notice vandalism not noticed for months. Multichill (talk) 22:13, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Something that might help is that the "tick box" for "follow this page" is by default put "on" on the upload page. The person who uploads a file will care most about changes. Wouter (talk) 20:14, 24 December 2008 (UTC)

Me has facilitado la tarea... --Crescent Moon (talk) 12:26, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Help needed

Dear robot, fascinating message, as usual. Please give explicit instructions for the assignment of my image to a category. --Smokefoot (talk) 01:16, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

You can add categories like this. Please read Commons:Categories for more information on the category structure here at Commons. Multichill (talk) 12:35, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Blanked pages...

Thanks your advice about Image:Icono bibliometro.png I have found a vandalism from Special:Contributions/81.34.145.14 This have blanked various images from Madrid Metro category. I have founs your robot also have tried do recategorize Image:Obras del Metro (línea 3).jpg. A suggerence : if found a blanked page, not is best revert to last edition from a registred user and also send a note to original upload for manual revision?

Special:Contributions/83.35.64.25 and Special:Contributions/83.49.7.99 are more blanked pages vandalism :(

Merry Chrismas and Happy New Year! --museo8bits (talk) 07:24, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism should be spotted by anti vandalism tools, not by a bot which comes by every once in a while to check for categories. Empty pages shouldn't be to difficult to detect. I might add it as a feature anyway. Multichill (talk) 12:32, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

I need help deleting old images

DNA maps are always updated & I used to create new maps instead of adding a newer version!

Thanks :) Cadenas2008 (talk) 08:53, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, ok, why are you telling me this? Don't forget to add categories to your (re)uploads. Multichill (talk) 12:21, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your advice

I enhanced the categories of my last image and did it right with the two new ones. From now on I will try to do it in the proper way.

I can live with it. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 01:20, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Right, and you expect me to understand a word you're saying? From User pl-0 : Ta osoba nie rozumie języka polskiego (albo ma z nim olbrzymie trudności). Multichill (talk) 11:50, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Because you wrote to me in Polish - it was not necessary - I thought you understand. Sorry. I am only occasionaly edit on Commons. I know about categorization, and even if sometimes I will send images wiwhout category, I will do that later. Sometimes it is difficult to decide what category is better. I edit on wikipedia, but Commons from time to time. Some of categories has different names than on wikipedia, f.e. Category:Biblical manuscripts on en-wiki and Category:Bible manuscripts on Commons. Is it possible to unify? There is another problem, I can not edit my user page on Commons if I am loged, though I can edit on your page and different pages. I cannot edit my images. Only after "log out" I can edit my user page and images. It is strange because I can edit on your page. With regards. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 21:12, 21 December 2008 (UTC)
Autotranslation was the source of this misunderstanding (your view, my view). You can always place an image in a general category and later refine. Unification is difficult (if not impossible) because the naming guidelines for categories are different. I don't know why you can't edit your userpage, it's not protected or anything like that. What kind of error do you get when you try to edit that page? Multichill (talk) 17:56, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
Yes I made some errors. I thought everything is like in wikipedia. In last time I have categorized this File:Uncial 0308 POxy 4500 recto.jpg. Usually I can edit on talk pages other users, byt with some exceptions (f.e. User talk:W.). I can live with it. I am not often visit Commons, unlike Wikipedia. Even on sr-wiki and es-wiki I am listed as one of more active users. It means I edit too much. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 20:41, 28 December 2008 (UTC)
Note on thisone: None of my talk pages was ever "blocked" for editing by anyone (there would be needed admin's competences to do so, and I would not see any reason in such unless there would be heavy vandalism for a longer period of time. If you, Leszek Jańczuk, really have troubles in editing any user page, this might rather be due to some proxy(?) server problem. I could not help on this -- my programmer's level is about the same as my Netherlands ;] -- Best, [w.] 06:01, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Absinthe

OK. I'll try not to forget again. Tks! FlaviaC (talk) 17:36, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

please feel free

please feel free to categorize any pictures that i add. Usually, "National Register of Historic Places" would be appropriate. However that category is not particularly helpful, and the photos I add are immediately used by me in the one or two relevant wikipedia articles.

I appreciate you are trying to do something good for wikimedia commons by asking users to add categories, but it is not a requirement that a category be added. If it was truly important (which I do not feel it is), it should be added into the required fields for uploading photos.

Sincerely, Doncram (talk) 23:38, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

HMMM. Actually, any-&everybody here H.A.S to feel free to improve on any file he/she notices to be "worth-while" for such.
IMO, it would seem polite to either upload pics which are either "close-to-be-perfectly-described/categorized/provided with sources&permissions" [which, imo, more often than not isn't an easy task at-all], O.R, alternatively, to explicitely beg for H.e.l.p on describing &c this special single file. Hello, Multichill/Archives/2008!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

hello Multichill, I have added categories now, in the process there was a box with info the logo might be deleted anytime (due to licens issues and not being free). However, in the end I could not find it anymore. Could you please let me know what this is about and what I could do in case? thanks, Sebastian Oltmanns (talk) 21:20, 15 January 2009 (UTC)
