Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

… Martin, dass Du ausgezeichnete Aufnahmen von brutalistischen Bauwerken machst und hier hochlädst! Der Brutalismus ist sicher nicht jedermanns Geschmack (auch nicht wirklich meiner ;–), aber es dennoch schlecht, dass diese teilweise wirklich einzigartigen Bauten heute oft vor sich hin gammeln und auch auf Commons usw. nur schlecht dokumentiert sind. Daher sind Deine Fotos eine Wohltat. Ebenfalls schade ist es, dass oft um die Bauten herum allerhand Störendes steht (vielleicht gerade, weil sie nicht besonders geachtet werden?!). • Danke Dir, Roman, für die freundlichen Worte! Du hast ganz recht, aber es geht mir hierbei auch nicht ums Sternchensammeln. Sonst würde ich mich an Schlösser halten, die ziehen immer! :-) Ich mag es, wenn wir auch mal atypische Kandidaten auf FPC haben und uns über deren Ästhetik austauschen, gerne kontrovers. Ich habe dem Brutalismus früher auch nichts abgewinnen können, jetzt denke ich ein bisschen anders darüber - wenngleich die wenigsten Massenbauten der 60er bis 90er natürlich irgendeinen bleibenden Wert zu entfalten vermögen. Aber die tatsächlichen Spitzenbeispiele sind sehr erhaltenswert - auch im Sinne des häufig ja gern unter rein zeitgeistigen Kriterien bewerteten Denkmalschutzes. Solcher Kontemporalismus ist doch immer ein wenig heikel, denn beinahe hätte man unter seinem Schutze etwa um 1800 auch alle Barockkirchen entsorgt, die heute auf FPC leicht den Sternchenbeutel befüllen. Daher tut eine gute Dokumentation immer Not, gerade auch in der Wikiwelt. Unlängst verstarb mit Gottfried Böhm einer der renommiertesten Architekten der letzten Jahrzehnte, der gerade in Köln und Umgebung viel gebaut hat. Dass es sich um einen Star handelte, fiel den meisten hier freilich erst auf, als die internationalen Nachrufe eintrudelten. Commons Photographers User Group: first board election
