SreeBot

Hi Magog, my alternate user account SreeBot was indefinitely blocked since BAG felt that it is malfunctioning. It does not seem like they will give me an opportunity to fix the errors they found. I am discontinuing using that script and also does not plan to transfer files from en wiki to Commons amass again. I am grateful for your comments and suggestions. I did enjoy a lot and also learned a lot of things during its development and while running it. I am sorry if I bothered you with its usage. Thanks again. --Sreejith K (talk) 12:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

If you were willing to take into account all of the suggestions regarding the bot, I bet you could get it unblocked and running. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:49, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
I am willing to take all the suggestions and bug reports into account and every time I get one, I can promise that I would not do the next transfer without fixing it. But even then, I think my tool is more or less redundant now as we have a similar tool Wikipedia:FTCG which is doing a pretty good job which I am learning from the tool's talk page. I think I should better invest my time now in Category:Files moved from en.wikipedia to Commons requiring review before thinking about the tool again. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:40, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey,

I think this is a big misunderstanding.

All I wanted to do was to translate one article (Lexus F division) from English into Spanish.

Since I didn't know how to link the images from the original article (images weren't showing up even if I inserted correctly the codes)I just re-uploaded them into my "account", they only way I found that it could work.

If you could edit the Spanish article and adding the original links or images from the English article I would really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot and regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.217.175.178 (talk • contribs) 2012-01-26T08:22:39‎ (UTC)

Use of shape file from the internet

The shapefile I got from the internet has no information whatsoever attached to it. It merely provides the shape of the counties. I do not believe this constitutes a copyright infringement in anyway because all are free to use it AS LONG as they cite the website. The terms of use are at the following page: https://www.nhgis.org/research/citation

"Citation and Use of NHGIS Data

All persons are granted a limited license to use this documentation and the accompanying data, subject to the following condition:

Publications and research reports based on the database must cite it appropriately. The citation should include the following:

Minnesota Population Center. National Historical Geographic Information System: Version 2.0. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota 2011.

If possible, citations should also include the URL for the NHGIS site: http://www.nhgis.org"

What exactly did you mean the other day when you said "That looks good enough for {{Attribution}} to me; if you don't mind, I'm going to add it to your uploads."? I'm not really that familiar with Wikimedia but I thought attribution was taken care of when I selected {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}. Thanks in advance for the clarification.--Tilden76 (talk) 19:21, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

There are two copyrights involved here: the copyright for the original map, and the copyright for your version (i.e., your rendering) of the map along with its colors, etc. Your rendering is covered by {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}, but the original authors still get credit per {{Attribution}}. Does that make sense? Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:23, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

I think so. Do I need to alter it in anyway to properly attribute the original map to NHGIS?--Tilden76 (talk) 22:39, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

What I would do in your situation is this: add this to the permission field of every image that you upload which is based on the NHGIS shape file: Map data is courtesy NHGIS: {{attribution|NHGIS}}. Alternatively, I could just do it for you, as that would be much easier. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:51, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. I'm a novice when it comes to Wikimedia and I just want to make sure that everything I upload is properly attributed.--Tilden76 (talk) 22:00, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Cleanup script

I think your cleanup script should add {{Own}} template to the source if the license is {{Self}} or {{PD-self}} (like {{PD-user-en}}). I would think that it is safe to assume so. Also, if possible add logic to replace the header == {{int:license-header}} == with == {{int:license-header}} == because I came across this header quite a lot.

Btw, I moved the cleanup link to my toolbar with a simple hack which you can see in my commons.js. I find this location more convenient than the left side menus. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:37, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

  • First request: I'm not sure that's a good idea. Shouldn't the own template only be used where the original uploader indicated ownership with specific wording?
  • Second request: ✓ Done.
  • Third request: interesting. You might try a poll at User talk:Magog the Ogre/cleanup.js to see how people want it. I'd go with whatever consensus is, including variable hacks to include either.
Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:29, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
To the first: no, please not add information which is just a guess! If there is somewhere no source given and you want to put something in because you have good information what the source could be then please clearly indicate that the source was not added by the uploader but by you. E.g. use that: "not provided by uploader. Own work could be assumed since, balblablablablabla." Also see Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Joy_Nilo_Pic.jpg.
Of course it is just a script and the responsibility is at the operators, but they will use it and I cannot bash every one of them. ;-) Thanks. --Saibo (Δ) 22:02, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
If the license is {{Self}}, then that the source is {{Own}} is not a guess, but that's what the license says. May be the uploader chose the wrong license from the license dropdown, but still when the license section says own source, I see no reason not to add {{Own}} in the {{Information}} template. I agree that the responsibility to add it should be on those who are running the script. Even when the script is doing that automatically, any error made is still the responsibility of the person who runs it an not of the script. --Sreejith K (talk) 08:23, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
The reason is that the uploader just choose the license and it is not very obvious that there is a "source" included in the license. If there is "Own work" (and probably also the name of the author) stated explicitly and standing alone that is a stronger statement of Own work than without - don't you agree?
I mean: imagine you are a newbie and want to upload a image which is "free on the web" (hey, everybody can access it via google ;-) ) - so why not choosing the "public domain" license? Well, okay, there is that "self" in there, but you don't know what that means and you also had downloaded it yourself from the web.
Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:28, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Strange...dropped info

See this diff. Seems to have dropped the date of the photo and the author of the derivative work. Kelly (talk) 03:56, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Ah; that's a bug in the cleanup tool, which recognized PD-1923 as "almost never belonging to the uploader" but didn't recognize attribution as "sometimes belonging to the author." I'll fix it. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:00, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Cool - yeah, that was a complicated image. Derivative work of a photo of public domain 3D art. Kelly (talk) 04:02, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
While I have you here, how many of the images in w:Category:Images delinked by OgreBot with the same name on Commons have duplicates in their history that I'll need to undelete? I'd prefer if there were none so I could just Twinkle delete the whole thing. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:04, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
None that I recall, you should have a green light. I think you already took care of the ones that needed special attention. Kelly (talk) 04:06, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
OK. BTW, OgreBot now interfaces with CommonsHelper (albeit indirectly), so you can actually perform the history split yourself if you want. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:08, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Sweet, I will have to check it out. Kelly (talk) 04:09, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Over at en Wikipedia, I left this note on a user's talk page - and got this reply. I don't even know what to say in response to something like that. Kelly (talk) 05:00, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

People will say and do illogical and/or stupid things. They have been doing it since the beginning of time, and will continue to do it until the Earth no longer stands; there is nothing you can do about it, so don't take it personally. You're right, of course - time to just press on. Kelly (talk) 06:38, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Remember not to climb the Reichstag dressed as Spider-man either. In all seriousness, I am a man with temper problems of my own, and one of the things I've always had to do is remind myself of how stupid the argument is in the grand scheme of life. I think there can be a spiritual component to that too, but I will leave that out of the discussion. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:55, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh goodness no; making vague references to "spirituality." I'm starting to sound like my father. Magog the Ogre (talk) 07:01, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Absolutely....and yeah, it's not like there's any shortage of en Wikipedia images to move to Commons. I figure if I totally ignore the contested images, I can move the others over here in about a hundred years...by then the contested images will be {{PD-old}}. Could you check this image file and see if I should have used Non-free use rationale for a newspaper masthead rather than uploading it to Commons with CC BY-SA 3.0. Although I took the photo of the Masthead, I now think I used the wrong license. Thanks. Woodlot (talk) 21:39, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Making the county map from the Republican Primary, 2012 colorblindfriendly

You have been doing some good work on the county map, so I would like to direct you attention to the need of making this map more colorblind friendly. I have posted this message on the talkpage of the articles using the map to get help from experienced mapmakers.
Since it is supertuesday and the maps will change a lot this will be a good time to make some good changes to the county map. So to all the mapguys out there:

  • Could we make the county map colorblind friendly? (it would be good to use the same colors already used in the state map in the infobox)
  • Could we included the Northern Marianna Islands in the territories?
  • Wouldnt it be a good time to loose the Missouri nonbinding primary? No one is really going to care about it after the Missouri cacuses anyway.
  • And if anyone has time: Could we update and make the schedule map colorblind friendly?

Here is some tips from a colorblind person, posted earlier about the schedule map: "Here is my problem with the primary schedule map: February is the same color as May. April is the same color as march. I recommend using the following colors: Red, blue, gray, orange, yellow, black. The colors need to be at maximal saturation. Red and black need to be different in brightess. The gray needs to be not at all blue. The orange needs to be different from the yellow in brightness. NO GREEN. NO BROWN. NO PURPLE. NO PINK. I can't see any difference at all between blue and purple. And using pastel colors is just cruel because the colorblind have lower detection thresholds for saturation. Also, another way to code maps is with patterns. I'd love to see more pattern-coded maps. The colorblind actually have superior pattern-detection systems as a direct result of being colorblind." 85.83.95.235 20:18, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't have a problem with the color-blind friendly maps (although they are a bit uglier, I think it's a fair price to pay). It seems User:Gage doesn't like them though, and has reverted the changes in the past. As for Missouri, I am quite OK with entirely ditching it (it never should have been included in the first place). As for Northern Mariana Islands, I will look into it, as well as to verify the status of delegates in the Republican convention. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:08, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
I apriciated your work on this map and share your opinions on colorblind friendly maps. I am looking forward to see what will happen. When it comes to the territories I was noticing a quit nice solution in this map: File:Leading Republican 2012 primary candidate by state map.svg in the statewide poll article. Would it be possible to cut out the small box with all the territories and paste it to the county map? Then the whole white part could become obsolete. Take a look and see what you think. 85.83.95.235 20:38, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

PD-Italy

Hello. I'm primarily a user of it.wikiquote, but recently I have been interested to the problem of template "PD-Italy". Referring to your cancellation procedure, I want to be reassured that in the future the template won't be deleted. Otherwise, for example, many projects that support the images with template "PD-Italy" may be deleted and never replaced. So I'm writing to understand whether the template will be deleted and a possible way out wing problem. Thank you so much! raul (talk) 17:32, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

I can't promise you that, no, because the very format of Wikimedia projects allows for any previous decision to change if better reasons are put forth. However, based on the fact there was a unanimous decision among editors that it was best to keep the template, I seriously doubt it will be deleted again. The only scenario under which I could see it happening again would be if there is a change in the law or there is a court ruling that directly affects it (e.g., an EU court directly orders Italy to get rid of the special provision for photographs). I'm sorry I can't promise more, but this is about as sure as I can be regarding the existence of any template. Magog the Ogre (talk) 07:28, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks anyway. I asked this also because on it.wikipedia we plan to transfer all images on Commons with "PD-Italy" via bot. Hello raul (talk) 18:31, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

PD-in

Please see Commons:Requests_for_comment/PD_review#Template:PD-in - a follow-up to Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2012/02#New_template_for_printout_copyright_information_for_all_countries. Did you have any more thoughts on conversion to Javascript? Rd232 (talk) 23:51, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Yes:
  • The template is far too slow as is, so it's not a viable long-term solution.
  • I was waiting until Lua implementation on the templates. If there is high enough demand, I can try to implement it in JS, but I start a new job with insane hours on Saturday. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:09, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Ah, well... Lua is a long way off AFAIK, so Javascript would be best... but in those RL circumstances, it's probably not sensible to take on a big project like that. Congratulations though. Rd232 (talk) 01:30, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

If you want to make things easy on me, then you could create the shell, wherein the Javascript interfaces can easily interface with the template. It would probably be similar to {{ImageNote}}. That alone is a big enough pain to not get me off the ground. The logic for the individual countries, however, is much easier. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:33, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Well I'd certainly be interested in exploring collaboration, if that might allow it to happen! However, I'm a bit concerned that explaining exactly what you need might not be that much easier or quicker than doing it yourself... if you could explain a little more, I could have a crack at it though, and with feedback on that maybe we'd get there :). Rd232 (talk) 01:40, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
It would be the following:
  • A site-wide Javascript; this doesn't need to be implemented until it's ready for prime-time, of course, but it will need to be accessible to you and me in our vector.js/monobook.js/etc. file until it is ready.
  • The Javascript will need to be able to look at a page, and determine the variables of the template. The way that {{ImageNote}} does this is that it is placed in specially named <span> tags.
  • The box will look similar to the way that {{PD-in}} already looks. When the user clicks to drop down the box, it will list all of the countries, but instead of "PD" or "Not-PD until...", it will have a blank field next to the country. The reason it will display the countries before our Javascript touches it is it allows internationalization via the {{Country}} parameter.
  • The Javascript written by us will calculate all of the PD information and fill it in the spaces that were listed blank above.
  • The JS will be displaying some text messages; e.g., "All works published before 1923 are public domain in the United States" or "Works published after February 28, 1989 carry a copyright term of 70 years after the death of the author." Eventually the script might be able to deliver these texts in the user's native language; however, that is after version 1.0.
  • If you want, you could implement the Script so that when I give it an output, it will output it into the empty text field. However, I can probably do a lot of this on my own if this is too much.
If you give me that shell, I can run the JS to do all of the heavy lifting for figuring out if an image is public domain in a given country. You do not need to implement any of this; you would only implement the idea that I can take the inputs and monkey with them. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:01, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
OK. My JS is extremely limited (close to non-existent), but that seems enough to have a first crack at the shell. Will probably take a few days though as RL comes calling again... Rd232 (talk) 09:48, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Right, here's a first attempt, with just enough to show you what I'm thinking (no point doing all countries yet). User:Rd232/PD-in produces something that looks the same as {{PD-in}}, minus the content in the second cell of each row, which is left empty. User:Rd232/PD-in/row wraps that second cell in a div with class and ID specific to each country, so your JS can get a handle on it and fill the div with whatever it needs to. Does this work for you?
BTW, I do wonder if it wouldn't be neater to provide a dropdown list of all countrynames "is this file PD in...", for easy and quick determination of PD status in one country, and then provide the additional option "view status in all countries", which shows a table covering all countries in a sortable table (sortable by status). I say this because dividing things up by continent as you did seems designed to make it easier to find a single specific country, but it does make it harder to get a comprehensive overview. This way you'd have both. It wouldn't make much difference to the script, except I think the dropdown itself would have to be inserted and monitored by the script, as <select> doesn't seem to be supported by MediaWiki. Rd232 (talk) 14:05, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
OK, it's a good first attempt, but it's not passing any of the variables along. The Javascript cannot divine the publication date, etc.: it must be input. It will need the following variables, much like Template:PD-in, but with some thrown away that the JS is smart enough to calculate, but was too hard in template logic. You don't need to implement the logic for these, only need to pass it on so that the JavaScript can read it right out of the HTML.

  • work_type=photograph|photo|radio|audio|cinema|television|audiovisual|art (I don't know of any others). Defaults to art.
  • publication=year of first publication. Defaults to current year. Maybe in some uber-late version the script will figure out the original upload date, but I'm not implemented that right away.
  • creation=year of creation. Required, unless there is a publication date, in which case it defaults to year of publication.
  • author_death=year of death of the last creator of the work, if known. Defaults to author still alive.
  • US_formalities=were US formalities observed? (copyright notice, deposit, renewal if necessary). Defaults to yes.
  • copyright_notice=did it carry a copyright notice? Defaults to yes. Depending on date of publication and value of US_formalities, default may change to no (as US_formalities necessarily entitled a copyright notice with first publication before 1978).
  • original_country=list of countries where it was first published. Separated by comma (","). Country list should be in the three digit format of flags at Category:Flag icon templates. An example would be original_country=FRA,AUS,USA. If published internationally (e.g., on the internet), then use INT. Defaults to INT.
  • anon=was this work a corporate creation, or anonymous, or is the date of the author's death unknown to the world? Defaults to no. If set to yes, author_death is ignored.
  • wartime=to be implemented at another time; will have whether the author fought in the first or second world war. Possible values: I (only first world war); II (only second world war); I,II (both world wars).
  • USGov=work created by the US government. Defaults to no.

As for a list by country instead of by continent: that is a good idea. I originally used it, but threw it away because it was hard to work with them all in bulk (this was a bad decision, ultimately). Perhaps we could have a second field which lists the region (North America, Central America/Carribean, South America, Europe, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania) or continent. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:49, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I see you added variables. Does that edit cover that issue, so I can just do the rest of the countries? BTW, there was recently Help:Machine-readable data as a new page. In theory the variables needed could be a PERSONDATA type thing, maybe... But that should be equally accessible to the script, so I guess we don't need to worry about that right now. Rd232 (talk) 18:22, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
That's correct. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:30, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
OK, at User:Rd232/PD-in I've added all the countries in the current PD-in template, and added an "all countries" table. If we want to use the "all countries" version instead of the regional ones, we should add a region column. Shall I do that? And is there anything else that you need to be able to get started on the script? Rd232 (talk) 11:51, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
The way that I grouped European Union, I did for time-saving purposes. We won't need to do that once I write it in a live script with things like variables and functions. Anyway, if you really want to make things easier for me, you could make the JS that does the following: on page load (you don't need any special onload functions; just put it in the JS outside of any function, and it will automatically run), it calls function PD-in:
  • For each country, it will call PD-in. The only input variable for PD-in will be the name of the country. Thus the function declaration will look like this: function PD-in(countryName) {}.
  • The JS will take the output from the function and display it. It will display the string with an explanation (further explained below) with the appropriate background color (one for PD, one for not PD, perhaps another for "unknown").
  • The function will return a string. Because I don't want to go through the hassle of creating a new class type to store the data, I will be cramming two pieces of information in the field:
    • The first 4 characters of the string will be the year in which it became public domain, unless the first four characters are 0000 - which means no year is necessary, or the first four characters are 9999 - which means the year when it will become public domain is unknown (e.g., the author of the work isn't dead yet, and the country has a 70 pma copyright).
    • The remaining characters in the string will return an explanation of the previous answer.
    • So, for example, the string "2048because works created before 1977 but published between 1978-2002 are automatically copyrighted until at least 2048" should look something like this:
United States not public domain until 2048
because works created before 1977 but published between 1978-2002 are automatically copyrighted until at least 2048.
    • "0000because works published before 1923 are out of copyright":
United States public domain
because works published before 1923 are out of copyright.
    • "9999for 70 years after the death of the author":
Germany not public domain
for 70 years after the death of the author.
    • "1972because works published within the author's lifetime are only copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the author":
Germany public domain since 1972
because works published within the author's lifetime are only copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the author.
That's a lot of material, I realize, but that's what would make it easier for me to implement. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:06, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I've read this a few times, and I always come to the same conclusion: I don't understand Javascript enough to have a sensible go at it. I had trouble even doing minor adaptations of an existing script; writing something from scratch is really ... just going to be embarrassing, and surely not useful. Sorry. New images lists

Hi Magog,

Somehow the galleries generated by the bot stopped updating yesterday. Would you have a look at it? --  Docu  at 06:11, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

And, unless I'm mistaken, perhaps the day before. The toolserver had a huge fart. And unfortunately, my new router (to which I don't have the password) doesn't appear to be allowing SSH, so I can't access it for the time being. I'm sorry. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:13, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for looking into it.
On the 17th it still worked. 18th and 19th are missing. --  Docu  at 06:15, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
OK, if you're still watching: it turns out that the nightshade server is down on the Toolserver, which is where I host my cron job. I'm just running it manually right now for the past 3 days. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:16, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

It's down for a couple of days now. If you have time to looking into it, I'd be glad. --  Docu  at 18:16, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

No, I currently lack the resources to do it. Probably in the next few days. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:56, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm really sorry about the long wait; it's been a comical compendium of errors that's made it unoperational for the time being. First, the server it was scheduled on went down. Then I forgot to update the code on the Toolserver, instead just updating it on my local machine, so it's not able to run. Then my new landlords screwed me over on internet for a good week and a half, and I can't dial in at work because they have a firewall set up. I'm reduced to running SSH off my 4" by 2" cell phone screen. Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:12, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Looks like you fixed it. Thanks. I hope things will start working out again. --  Docu  at 04:29, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

RE:

But it was cut from another image, it needs the permission or the picture is mine? --Ângulo ótimo (talk) 13:01, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

In the license is written, "Public Affairs". If it's of "Public Affairs", need of permission? --Ângulo ótimo (talk) 13:19, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that the original image itself needs permission[2]. Magog the Ogre (talk) 15:49, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Even if it were in "Public Affairs"? --Ângulo ótimo (talk) 16:40, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
In English, "public affairs" is just a department that acts as the go-between for the organization and the public; see w:Public relations. That's right; it says nothing about its copyright status. Magog the Ogre (talk) 17:12, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Teleca

Could you check the deleted Wikipedia file information pages for four Teleca photos? They seem to have been uploaded by one user on Wikipedia and then later uploaded as own work by a different user on Commons. Somehow, I doubt that one single person would travel to Teleca buildings in various European and Asian countries and only take photos of those buildings, so something looks fishy. The last one wasn't even deleted from Wikipedia as F8 but as F11. I suspect that the whole set should be deleted on Commons too.

Magog the Ogre (talk) 10:58, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

The Wikipedia and Commons images are the same, right? Except for any resizing, that is. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:16, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Correct. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:45, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Fileinfo bug

If you use tools:~magog/fileinfo.php to generate a file upload history, the output uses a localised File namespace for the original filename. However, {{Original description}} requires an English File namespace, so in the end you get a link with a double namespace. See example at Special:PermanentLink/70316550: the link goes to de:File:Datei:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:13, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

That's odd, because this is the text I got: {{Original description|de.wikipedia|{{subst:PAGENAMEE:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg}}}}, which translates to {{Original description|de.wikipedia|ThomsonMessbr%C3%BCckeRFT.jpg}}, which translates to http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AThomsonMessbr%C3%BCckeRFT.jpg. I fixed a bug in it last night, but I don't understand why you'd have gotten that output today. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:37, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

I've found the error. If you type in the filename with namespace (Datei:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg) in the "source file" field, the output is {{Original description|de.wikipedia|{{subst:PAGENAMEE:Datei:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg}}}}. On the other hand, if you type in the filename without namespace (ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg), the output is {{Original description|de.wikipedia|{{subst:PAGENAMEE:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg}}}}. I guess I must have copied and pasted the filename with namespace yesterday. --Stefan4 (talk) 19:35, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Ah, right; because Commons doesn't recognize the Datei: namespace, it would have goofed that up. I'll write something in the code to fix that. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:54, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually, I think I might not fix it, because Mediawiki allows the : character in file names, which might cause issues. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:07, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

On a closer look, it seems that {{Original description}} doesn't allow any namespace at all, regardless of language. Would it be possible for tools:~magog/fileinfo.php to strip the namespace in the output? I assume yes since the tool manages to get the same upload history regardless of whether you type in a namespace or not. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:14, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

The parsing is either done by Peachy or by the Mediawiki software. I'll look into it. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:17, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Commonshelper

Thanks for your note. I'll love to use Commonshelper, but it has stopped working; both versions. Maybe it objects to Explorer. Until there is a working version, I will have to keep doing it manually.Hogweard (talk) 19:25, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

PD-in template

Hello,

The {{PD-in}} template at File:Tsavo Maneaters Field Museum.jpeg says "not public domain until 2018 in European Union, all countries, unless listed below". However the EU has the en:Rule_of the_shorter term#Situation_in_the European_Union . A US work that is PD in the US is automatically PD in France, I am sure. Teofilo (talk) 18:52, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I had to stop development of the template because the MediaWiki software renders the template too slowly, making it unusable (try editing the page, and clicking the "preview" button - you'll notice it takes a very long time for the server to respond; the template is barely usable as is, so many more "if" clauses would cause it to become worse). Currently, we are waiting for the software to incorporate a small programming language into templates (Lua) in order to make it more efficient. So the template is currently returning information that is incomplete (although it is always erring on the safe side - never returning "public domain" if it is unfree). Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:26, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Question (about the euro coins)

First of all, sorry for the problem about all these coins ... I thought the licence was ok ... However, I would like to upload the pictures of each coins ... is a own-made picture of an euro coin correct ? Treehill (fr) Treehill 09:15, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

It depends on the coin and the date when it was minted. See COM:MONEY#Euro and COM:MONEY#Belgium. Does that answer your question? Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:27, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Magog, you're so fast you cleaned up my mess on File:Micki Steele.jpg before I could get back to it! You're blistering speed is almost as impressive as your tremendous dedication to overseeing and assisting the move-to-commons efforts. I think this barnstar is probably long overdue, but your help on this one image was enough to remind me of how much you mean to the project. Thanks a million and take care! Michael Barera (talk) 00:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Well that's thoughtful, thank you very much. Magog the Ogre (talk) 02:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I'm wondering why you request a source for this photo. Is it because you want to be sure that it IS from 1946 and/or that it was taken by someone from India? --MGA73 (talk) 21:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Indian images that were published after 1941 are not free in the US unless they published in the US within 30 days of publication abroad. According to policy, they must be PD in both countries. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:42, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Good point. I deleted the file. --MGA73 (talk) 21:54, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I've been thinking more about this... If {{PD-India}} needs to be published in the US within 30 days etc. then what about {{PD-Denmark}} {{PD-Sweden-photo}} {{PD-Italy}} and {{Anonymous-EU}}? Should we harmonize the templates? --MGA73 (talk) 07:55, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Probably. It's a fairly Herculian task and I don't have the willpower, as I will be assailed from all directions (people take it personally and not factually when their images are deleted; see, for example, my recent DR: Commons:Deletion requests/Various PD-Australia after 1945)) and the Commons culture does a terrible job promoting intelligent discussion over stupidity. But even PD-Australia used to have the US data on it, but it was removed.[3] See also Template:PD-Italy/US, which I created. Magog the Ogre (talk) 07:59, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm afraid I might not be of much use - I speak only American English and a few tatterings of Spanish. We're already over-represented. Magog the Ogre (talk) 18:53, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
Forget all past bad things - I believe as human beings we all have a propensity to be good or bad. At least I admit that probably I might have been bad. But still if I can, at any point of time, extend any help to you, it will be my pleasure. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 18:59, 1 June 2012 (UTC).

File: Tommie Frazier photo.jpg

Hi Magog the Ogre. I received Athlons Sports Inc.'s Mitch Light's email with his signature and his decision to go with a CC-BY-SA 3.0 on the fill-out form that we use for Wikimedia. I forwarded it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as I have been instructed to do by Wikipedia user Eagles 24/7. I rushed all of that information to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. My thing is that I need to know what else I need to do to make the photograph eligible. This thing has been three weeks in the works with my contacting the magazine company Athlons Sports, Inc. Please tell what I need to do (?) - and I will perform that task. Again, I sent Mitch Light the checklist form that had him select a license to go with this new Tommie Frazier photo - and a place for him to check off with his signature as he represents the copyright holder of the photograph. I just need some assistance in this effort. Thanks. Rod Hayes (talk) 03:35, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Alright; I handled the OTRS ticket. It looks like you got caught in the backlog (which is a few weeks large), but also got stuck because the email was a bit hard to decipher who was authorizing what and who was just quoting who, so no one who viewed it took the time to action it. Sorry for any problems, but thanks for the contribution. Cheers. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:50, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Magog. I was just in the process of resending Mitch Light's emails - but I see I have probably sent you too many emails already. So I won't resend anymore. I am so sorry for making this difficult to decipher. Please just let me know if there is anything else I need to do. Otherwise, I'll just chill out. Again, I am sorry for making things so difficult to understand. Please forgive. Rod Hayes (talk) 04:01, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure if it was you or Mitch who made it difficult to decipher. Anyway, no need to apologize. Magog the Ogre (talk) 04:02, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

German language

Hello Magog the Ogre, could you add the German version to this template? I don't know, how it works. The text would be: "username" bei der deutschen Wikipedia. This would be the best variant (best grammar, I think), but I don't know, if it is possible. Other options would be: "username" bei Wikipedia auf Deutsch or "username" bei Wikipedia, Deutsch. I hope, this is not tooo confusing... ;-) Regards, --Brackenheim (talk) 11:13, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

My favorite version is “[username] in der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia”. --Leyo 11:36, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
+1 - this version is much better! --Brackenheim (talk) 14:01, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Is it always correct to do <red>language</red>sprachigen? And what would be the proper way to handle it if we wanted it to talk about the language Wikipedia called "Chinesisch (vereinfacht)"? Is it "Chinesischsprachigen (vereinfacht)" or something else? Magog the Ogre (talk) 16:54, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I would prefer “[username] aus der deutschsprachigen Wikipedia” as it is written in {{GFDL-user-de}}, too. I changed this already, because I didn't read this discussion before. Is it okay? --Emha (talk) 21:18, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Please review the test cases for all the languages at [4] and tell me if any are amiss and how they should read. Magog the Ogre (talk) 21:54, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Wiktionary is not female but neuter. Hence, “aus der” → “aus dem”.
“lateinsprachigen” → “lateinischen” or “lateinischsprachigen”
“pangasinan-sprachesprachigen” → “pangasinansprachigen”
--Leyo 08:07, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
norwegisch nynorsksprachigen is orthographically wrong (de:Durchkopplung; no space inside an adjective), but I don't know how to repair it optimally
‪беларуская (тарашкевіца)‬sprachigen: obviously wrong, mind the Durchkopplung
bishnupria manipurisprachigen, basa banyumasansprachigen, fiji hindisprachigen, sichuan yisprachigen: no space, better with hyphen
western punjabisprachigen: west(-)panjabisprachigen
schottisches gälischsprachigen: schottisch-gälischsprachigen
egyptian spoken arabicsprachigen: ägyptisch-arabischsprachigen
bikol centralsprachigen: bikolanosprachigen
all sprachesprachigen: without sprache
hill marisprachigen: bergmarisprachigen or westmarisprachigen
classical chinesesprachigen: klassisch-chinesisch-sprachigen
norfuk / pitkernsprachigen: better without spaces?
min dong chinesesprachigen: min-dong-chinesisch-sprachigen
буряадsprachigen: if it is buryat, then burjatischsprachigen
Personally I'd add more hyphens (...-sprachigen) as many words are rather long and difficult to read, which should be orthographically acceptable. (Thanks for your hint.) → «« Man77 »» [de]·[bar] 11:23, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
Are these errors or inconsistencies in the translation itself (i.e., it should be fixed in the software[5]), or are they errors that arise from adding sprachigen? If it's the former, I'll point you to open a bug at Bugzilla;[6] if it's the former, I will fix it locally, even if it means I have to make a special case. Magog the Ogre (talk) 22:22, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
Well, it depends. ‪беларуская (тарашкевіца)and буряад obviously are not translated, the same is with western punjabi, egyption arabic, bikol central, hill mari, classical chinese, min dong chinese, which are english. others need grammatic correction when suffixed (schottisches Gälisch as noun, schottisch-gälisch[(-)sprachig(en)] as adjective). Others need a hyphen when suffixed (basa banyuma etc)
I do not know what exactly leads to sprachesprachigen, but for examlpe "Ewe" can mean a ethnic group or a language, "Ewe-Sprache" is used to make clear you are referring to the language. As adjective you can use "Ewe-" (Ewe-Wikipedia), which could mean Ewe people's Wikipedia just as Ewe language Wikipedia, or you take the adjective of Sprache (language), which is sprachig (therefore Ewe-sprachig(en) or ewesprachig(en)). The suffix "-Sprache" for the languages (as a noun) is not wrong, therefore it's not a central problem, but it must not be used when given the adjective suffix "[-]sprachig". How to solve that? I think you know better. → «« Man77 »» [de]·[bar] 13:40, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
One more thing I'd like to add: Those South East Asian languages with basa, which I think means "language", and similar cases could maybe be better translated without "basa" or without "sprachig" ("banyumasansprachigen Wikipedia" or "Basa-Banyumasan-Wikipedia"). → «« Man77 »» [de]·[bar] 13:44, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
The answer right now is to use the switch statement. For that, I need a correct translation for each one, which is why I'm pestering you to be so exact. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:21, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Swedish

How would you do if the syntax is more complex? I would like to add a Swedish translation but can't figure out how to get the syntax right. In most cases, the syntax is to take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|code|sv}}}}|0|-1}} and add "språkiga" at the end. For example:

  • Take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|sv|sv}}}}|0|-1}} = {{#sub:svenska|0|-1}} and add "språkiga Wikipedia" to get "svenskspråkiga Wikipedia".
  • Take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|de|sv}}}}|0|-1}} = {{#sub:tyska|0|-1}} and add "språkiga Wikipedia" to get "tyskspråkiga Wikipedia".

However, the "sub" function (mw:Extension:StringFunctions#.23sub:) doesn't work (missing extension?) and besides you sometimes need to do different things. For example, take {{lc:{{language|nb|sv}}}} (norskt bokmål), delete a letter from the first word and add "språkiga Wikipedia" in the middle to get "norskspråkiga Wikipedia (bokmål)". --Stefan4 (talk) 18:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

To handle the first problem, you want to use {{Str left}} in conjunction with {{Str len}}. To handle the second problem, you want to use {{Str find}} to see if there is a parenthesis in the returned value. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:00, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
So, for example, I used the following code (I don't know if it is correct for all languages): {{#ifeq:{{str find|{{{3}}}| }}|-1|{{str left|{{{3}}}|{{#expr:{{str len|{{{3}}}}}-1}}}}språkiga {{{2}}}|{{str left|{{{3}}}|{{#expr:{{str find|{{{3}}}| }}-2}}}}språkiga {{{2}}} ({{str right|{{{3}}}|{{str find|{{{3}}}| }}}})}}. This generates:
  • no -> norskspråkiga Wikipedia
  • nb -> norskspråkiga Wikipedia (bokmål)
But it also generates these, which appear possibly wrong to me:
  • zh-hans -> förenklaspråkiga Wikipedia (kinesiska)
  • zh -> kinesiskspråkiga Wikipedia
Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:29, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
To my knowledge, there is no project using the language code zh-hans, so that is no problem I'd say. I'll do some testing to see if there are any problems with any other language codes. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:23, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Development is here: Template:User at project/core/sandbox; make sure to set your uselang to sv ([7]). Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:00, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
FYI, we may have gone through much of that for nothing: it doesn't appear that any Wikipedias with a parenthesis exist, save "Беларуская (тарашкевіца)‬", which is written in neither Swedish nor English. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:44, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I noticed. I see that some project names are wrong. I'll try to look into that in a few days. --Stefan4 (talk) 00:13, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
