Hi Magog, my alternate user account SreeBot was indefinitely blocked since BAG felt that it is malfunctioning. It does not seem like they will give me an opportunity to fix the errors they found. I am discontinuing using that script and also does not plan to transfer files from en wiki to Commons amass again. I am grateful for your comments and suggestions. I did enjoy a lot and also learned a lot of things during its development and while running it. I am sorry if I bothered you with its usage. I am willing to take all the suggestions and bug reports into account and every time I get one, I can promise that I would not do the next transfer without fixing it. But even then, I think my tool is more or less redundant now as we have a similar tool Wikipedia:FTCG which is doing a pretty good job which I am learning from the tool's talk page. Lexus F-division logo

Hey,

I think this is a big misunderstanding.

All I wanted to do was to translate one article (Lexus F division) from English into Spanish.

Since I didn't know how to link the images from the original article (images weren't showing up even if I inserted correctly the codes)I just re-uploaded them into my "account", they only way I found that it could work.

If you could edit the Spanish article and adding the original links or images from the English article I would really appreciate it.

Use of shape file from the internet

The shapefile I got from the internet has no information whatsoever attached to it. It merely provides the shape of the counties. I do not believe this constitutes a copyright infringement in anyway because all are free to use it AS LONG as they cite the website. What exactly did you mean the other day when you said "That looks good enough for {{Attribution}} to me; if you don't mind, I'm going to add it to your uploads."? I'm not really that familiar with Wikimedia but I thought attribution was taken care of when I selected {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}. There are two copyrights involved here: the copyright for the original map, and the copyright for your version (i.e., your rendering) of the map along with its colors, etc. Your rendering is covered by {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}, but the original authors still get credit per {{Attribution}}. What I would do in your situation is this: add this to the permission field of every image that you upload which is based on the NHGIS shape file: Map data is courtesy NHGIS: {{attribution|NHGIS}}. Cleanup script

I think your cleanup script should add {{Own}} template to the source if the license is {{Self}} or {{PD-self}} (like {{PD-user-en}}). I would think that it is safe to assume so. Also, if possible add logic to replace the header == {{int:license-header}} == with == {{int:license-header}} == because I came across this header quite a lot.

Btw, I moved the cleanup link to my toolbar with a simple hack which you can see in my commons.js. I find this location more convenient than the left side menus. --Sreejith K (talk) 06:37, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

• First request: I'm not sure that's a good idea. Shouldn't the own template only be used where the original uploader indicated ownership with specific wording?

To the first: no, please not add information which is just a guess! If there is somewhere no source given and you want to put something in because you have good information what the source could be then please clearly indicate that the source was not added by the uploader but by you. E.g. use that: "not provided by uploader. Own work could be assumed since, balblablablablabla." Also see Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Joy_Nilo_Pic.jpg.

If the license is {{Self}}, then that the source is {{Own}} is not a guess, but that's what the license says. May be the uploader chose the wrong license from the license dropdown, but still when the license section says own source, I see no reason not to add {{Own}} in the {{Information}} template. I agree that the responsibility to add it should be on those who are running the script. Even when the script is doing that automatically, any error made is still the responsibility of the person who runs it an not of the script. --Sreejith K (talk) 08:23, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

The reason is that the uploader just choose the license and it is not very obvious that there is a "source" included in the license. If there is "Own work" (and probably also the name of the author) stated explicitly and standing alone that is a stronger statement of Own work than without - don't you agree?

I mean: imagine you are a newbie and want to upload a image which is "free on the web" (hey, everybody can access it via google ;-) ) - so why not choosing the "public domain" license? Well, okay, there is that "self" in there, but you don't know what that means and you also had downloaded it yourself from the web.

Making the county map from the Republican Primary, 2012 colorblindfriendly

You have been doing some good work on the county map, so I would like to direct you attention to the need of making this map more colorblind friendly. I have posted this message on the talkpage of the articles using the map to get help from experienced mapmakers.
Since it is supertuesday and the maps will change a lot this will be a good time to make some good changes to the county map. So to all the mapguys out there:

• Could we make the county map colorblind friendly? (it would be good to use the same colors already used in the state map in the infobox)
• Could we included the Northern Marianna Islands in the territories?
• Wouldnt it be a good time to loose the Missouri nonbinding primary? No one is really going to care about it after the Missouri cacuses anyway.
• And if anyone has time: Could we update and make the schedule map colorblind friendly?

Here is some tips from a colorblind person, posted earlier about the schedule map: "Here is my problem with the primary schedule map: February is the same color as May. April is the same color as march. I recommend using the following colors: Red, blue, gray, orange, yellow, black. The colors need to be at maximal saturation. Red and black need to be different in brightess. The gray needs to be not at all blue. The orange needs to be different from the yellow in brightness. NO GREEN. NO BROWN. NO PURPLE. NO PINK. I can't see any difference at all between blue and purple. And using pastel colors is just cruel because the colorblind have lower detection thresholds for saturation. Also, another way to code maps is with patterns. I'd love to see more pattern-coded maps. I don't have a problem with the color-blind friendly maps (although they are a bit uglier, I think it's a fair price to pay). It seems User:Gage doesn't like them though, and has reverted the changes in the past. As for Missouri, I am quite OK with entirely ditching it (it never should have been included in the first place). When it comes to the territories I was noticing a quit nice solution in this map: File:Leading Republican 2012 primary candidate by state map.svg in the statewide poll article. Would it be possible to cut out the small box with all the territories and paste it to the county map? Then the whole white part could become obsolete. PD-Italy

Hello. I'm primarily a user of it.wikiquote, but recently I have been interested to the problem of template "PD-Italy". Referring to your cancellation procedure, I want to be reassured that in the future the template won't be deleted. Otherwise, for example, many projects that support the images with template "PD-Italy" may be deleted and never replaced. I can't promise you that, no, because the very format of Wikimedia projects allows for any previous decision to change if better reasons are put forth. However, based on the fact there was a unanimous decision among editors that it was best to keep the template, I seriously doubt it will be deleted again. The only scenario under which I could see it happening again would be if there is a change in the law or there is a court ruling that directly affects it (e.g., an EU court directly orders Italy to get rid of the special provision for photographs). Yes:

• The template is far too slow as is, so it's not a viable long-term solution.

If you want to make things easy on me, then you could create the shell, wherein the Javascript interfaces can easily interface with the template. It would probably be similar to {{ImageNote}}. It would be the following:

• A site-wide Javascript; this doesn't need to be implemented until it's ready for prime-time, of course, but it will need to be accessible to you and me in our vector.js/monobook.js/etc. file until it is ready.
• The Javascript will need to be able to look at a page, and determine the variables of the template. The way that {{ImageNote}} does this is that it is placed in specially named <span> tags.
• The box will look similar to the way that {{PD-in}} already looks. When the user clicks to drop down the box, it will list all of the countries, but instead of "PD" or "Not-PD until...", it will have a blank field next to the country. The reason it will display the countries before our Javascript touches it is it allows internationalization via the {{Country}} parameter.
• The Javascript written by us will calculate all of the PD information and fill it in the spaces that were listed blank above.
• The JS will be displaying some text messages; e.g., "All works published before 1923 are public domain in the United States" or "Works published after February 28, 1989 carry a copyright term of 70 years after the death of the author." Eventually the script might be able to deliver these texts in the user's native language; however, that is after version 1.0.
• If you want, you could implement the Script so that when I give it an output, it will output it into the empty text field. However, I can probably do a lot of this on my own if this is too much.

If you give me that shell, I can run the JS to do all of the heavy lifting for figuring out if an image is public domain in a given country. Right, here's a first attempt, with just enough to show you what I'm thinking (no point doing all countries yet). User:Rd232/PD-in produces something that looks the same as {{PD-in}}, minus the content in the second cell of each row, which is left empty. User:Rd232/PD-in/row wraps that second cell in a div with class and ID specific to each country, so your JS can get a handle on it and fill the div with whatever it needs to. Does this work for you?

BTW, I do wonder if it wouldn't be neater to provide a dropdown list of all countrynames "is this file PD in...", for easy and quick determination of PD status in one country, and then provide the additional option "view status in all countries", which shows a table covering all countries in a sortable table (sortable by status). I say this because dividing things up by continent as you did seems designed to make it easier to find a single specific country, but it does make it harder to get a comprehensive overview. This way you'd have both. It wouldn't make much difference to the script, except I think the dropdown itself would have to be inserted and monitored by the script, as <select> doesn't seem to be supported by MediaWiki. OK, it's a good first attempt, but it's not passing any of the variables along. The Javascript cannot divine the publication date, etc.: it must be input. It will need the following variables, much like Template:PD-in, but with some thrown away that the JS is smart enough to calculate, but was too hard in template logic. You don't need to implement the logic for these, only need to pass it on so that the JavaScript can read it right out of the HTML.

• work_type=photograph|photo|radio|audio|cinema|television|audiovisual|art (I don't know of any others). Defaults to art.
• publication=year of first publication. Defaults to current year. Maybe in some uber-late version the script will figure out the original upload date, but I'm not implemented that right away.
• creation=year of creation. Required, unless there is a publication date, in which case it defaults to year of publication.
• author_death=year of death of the last creator of the work, if known. Defaults to author still alive.
• US_formalities=were US formalities observed? (copyright notice, deposit, renewal if necessary). Defaults to yes.
• copyright_notice=did it carry a copyright notice? Defaults to yes. Depending on date of publication and value of US_formalities, default may change to no (as US_formalities necessarily entitled a copyright notice with first publication before 1978).
• original_country=list of countries where it was first published. Separated by comma (","). Country list should be in the three digit format of flags at Category:Flag icon templates. An example would be original_country=FRA,AUS,USA. If published internationally (e.g., on the internet), then use INT. Defaults to INT.
• anon=was this work a corporate creation, or anonymous, or is the date of the author's death unknown to the world? Defaults to no. If set to yes, author_death is ignored.
• wartime=to be implemented at another time; will have whether the author fought in the first or second world war. Possible values: I (only first world war); II (only second world war); I,II (both world wars).
• USGov=work created by the US government. Defaults to no.

As for a list by country instead of by continent: that is a good idea. I originally used it, but threw it away because it was hard to work with them all in bulk (this was a bad decision, ultimately). Perhaps we could have a second field which lists the region (North America, Central America/Carribean, South America, Europe, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania) or continent. If we want to use the "all countries" version instead of the regional ones, we should add a region column. Shall I do that? The way that I grouped European Union, I did for time-saving purposes. We won't need to do that once I write it in a live script with things like variables and functions. Anyway, if you really want to make things easier for me, you could make the JS that does the following: on page load (you don't need any special onload functions; just put it in the JS outside of any function, and it will automatically run), it calls function PD-in:

• For each country, it will call PD-in. The only input variable for PD-in will be the name of the country. Thus the function declaration will look like this: function PD-in(countryName) {}.
• The JS will take the output from the function and display it. It will display the string with an explanation (further explained below) with the appropriate background color (one for PD, one for not PD, perhaps another for "unknown").
• The function will return a string. Because I don't want to go through the hassle of creating a new class type to store the data, I will be cramming two pieces of information in the field:
  • The first 4 characters of the string will be the year in which it became public domain, unless the first four characters are 0000 - which means no year is necessary, or the first four characters are 9999 - which means the year when it will become public domain is unknown (e.g., the author of the work isn't dead yet, and the country has a 70 pma copyright).
  • The remaining characters in the string will return an explanation of the previous answer.
  • So, for example, the string "2048because works created before 1977 but published between 1978-2002 are automatically copyrighted until at least 2048" should look something like this:

I'm really sorry about the long wait; it's been a comical compendium of errors that's made it unoperational for the time being. First, the server it was scheduled on went down. Then I forgot to update the code on the Toolserver, instead just updating it on my local machine, so it's not able to run. Then my new landlords screwed me over on internet for a good week and a half, and I can't dial in at work because they have a firewall set up. Teleca

Could you check the deleted Wikipedia file information pages for four Teleca photos? They seem to have been uploaded by one user on Wikipedia and then later uploaded as own work by a different user on Commons. Somehow, I doubt that one single person would travel to Teleca buildings in various European and Asian countries and only take photos of those buildings, so something looks fishy. The last one wasn't even deleted from Wikipedia as F8 but as F11. I suspect that the whole set should be deleted on Commons too.

Fileinfo bug

If you use tools:~magog/fileinfo.php to generate a file upload history, the output uses a localised File namespace for the original filename. However, {{Original description}} requires an English File namespace, so in the end you get a link with a double namespace. I've found the error. If you type in the filename with namespace (Datei:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg) in the "source file" field, the output is {{Original description|de.wikipedia|{{subst:PAGENAMEE:Datei:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg}}}}. On the other hand, if you type in the filename without namespace (ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg), the output is {{Original description|de.wikipedia|{{subst:PAGENAMEE:ThomsonMessbrückeRFT.jpg}}}}. PD-in template

Hello,

The {{PD-in}} template at File:Tsavo Maneaters Field Museum.jpeg says "not public domain until 2018 in European Union, all countries, unless listed below". However the EU has the en:Rule_of the_shorter term#Situation_in_the European_Union . A US work that is PD in the US is automatically PD in France, I am sure. Teofilo (talk) 18:52, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I had to stop development of the template because the MediaWiki software renders the template too slowly, making it unusable (try editing the page, and clicking the "preview" button - you'll notice it takes a very long time for the server to respond; the template is barely usable as is, so many more "if" clauses would cause it to become worse). Currently, we are waiting for the software to incorporate a small programming language into templates (Lua) in order to make it more efficient. So the template is currently returning information that is incomplete (although it is always erring on the safe side - never returning "public domain" if it is unfree). Probably. It's a fairly Herculian task and I don't have the willpower, as I will be assailed from all directions (people take it personally and not factually when their images are deleted; see, for example, my recent DR: Commons:Deletion requests/Various PD-Australia after 1945)) and the Commons culture does a terrible job promoting intelligent discussion over stupidity. Well, it depends. ‪беларуская (тарашкевіца)and буряад obviously are not translated, the same is with western punjabi, egyption arabic, bikol central, hill mari, classical chinese, min dong chinese, which are english. others need grammatic correction when suffixed (schottisches Gälisch as noun, schottisch-gälisch[(-)sprachig(en)] as adjective). Others need a hyphen when suffixed (basa banyuma etc)

I do not know what exactly leads to sprachesprachigen, but for examlpe "Ewe" can mean a ethnic group or a language, "Ewe-Sprache" is used to make clear you are referring to the language. As adjective you can use "Ewe-" (Ewe-Wikipedia), which could mean Ewe people's Wikipedia just as Ewe language Wikipedia, or you take the adjective of Sprache (language), which is sprachig (therefore Ewe-sprachig(en) or ewesprachig(en)). The suffix "-Sprache" for the languages (as a noun) is not wrong, therefore it's not a central problem, but it must not be used when given the adjective suffix "[-]sprachig". How to solve that? Swedish

How would you do if the syntax is more complex? I would like to add a Swedish translation but can't figure out how to get the syntax right. In most cases, the syntax is to take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|code|sv}}}}|0|-1}} and add "språkiga" at the end. For example:

• Take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|sv|sv}}}}|0|-1}} = {{#sub:svenska|0|-1}} and add "språkiga Wikipedia" to get "svenskspråkiga Wikipedia".
• Take {{#sub:{{lc:{{language|de|sv}}}}|0|-1}} = {{#sub:tyska|0|-1}} and add "språkiga Wikipedia" to get "tyskspråkiga Wikipedia".

However, the "sub" function (mw:Extension:StringFunctions#.23sub:) doesn't work (missing extension?) and besides you sometimes need to do different things. For example, take {{lc:{{language|nb|sv}}}} (norskt bokmål), delete a letter from the first word and add "språkiga Wikipedia" in the middle to get "norskspråkiga Wikipedia (bokmål)". --Stefan4 (talk) 18:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

But it also generates these, which appear possibly wrong to me:

• zh -> kinesiskspråkiga Wikipedia
