@Goran tek-en: if a page has an English description, then it will show that in the previewer for all languages. I removed it and added an internationalized version since "Maginot Line in France" added nothing other than the internationalized label. I did this for all language versions of the page. I removed institution because it's not an institution. I added the other versions of the template since they're relevant. I added the category since it's relevant. I've already tried to explain what the problem with the file's licensing was at en:WP:MCQ#New editor, image licensing and the VW Phaeton., at en:User talk:Chaheel Riens#Volkswagen Phaeton main photo and at en:User talk:Toyota Corolla E140#Welcome!, but I not sure I've been doing a good job as doing so since they don't seem to want to believe what I've posted. Unfortunately, it looks as if they're going to try and upload it again. Your blocking of their account, however, does seem to have gotten their attention; so, maybe now they'll be more inclined to listen. It's sort of too bad that things ended up this way. Current filemoving instrument is requiring the file to be not used anywhere, to suppress the redirect (it is used when file name has obvious mistakes in it). The same with deletion policy: it requires for file to not be used somewhere. I understand the usability of this lists "in time", but few years later they don't seem to be useful. Question about Ukraine Map

First of all, I would like to apologize for contributing to the edit war problem on the Russo-Ukrainian War map. Second, I would like to ask, what is the best thing to do next time? At the time I reverted the map, the edit that person had posted was unsourced. So, should I leave the incorrect map up or do something else that I am not aware of? @Physeters: unfortunately I cannot tell what is sourced and what is unsourced. The only thing I can see is multiple people edit warring on a high visibility page, that this has been going on for weeks, that I have provided warnings on the talk and file pages, and that I needed to take drastic measures to stop it.
In this case, I would say make sure you get consensus on the talk page and then indicate as much in the edit summary. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 12:48, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Possible re-upload of copyvio

Hi Magog the Ogre. Would you mind taking a look at File:Dr raghuram 4 x 6 1.JPG? It might be a re-upload of File:Dr-Raghuram.jpg which you deleted as a copyvio about a month prior to this file being uploaded. It seems unlikely to be “own work”, but there’s a claim that permission was given to upload the photo. That permission, however, seems to be from the subject of the photo, and not the photographer who took the photo. @Saha86830: if you upload someone else's work, then you need to specify the source and why the image is free. In the vast majority of cases, images are not free. Hi, re: the pics on the Aslan Ashurov entry, I would be grateful for your guidance. The pics come from www.ashurovmalikov.com which I created for the Ashurov malikov families. I explained to them that Wiki needs the pics copyright free and they agreed I could post these pics to Wiki, about their ancestor, on those terms (which I tried to capture in the file descriptions). @Red Exile: when you uploaded the images, you marked them as "own work" and assigned yourself as the copyright holder. This is definitely not correct since the images ~100 years old. Please add how you received them and what their ultimate source is. In this case, you could ask the family where the photographs come from and if they know anything about the photographer. Template:Original description page

Hello, about five years ago you’ve changed changed the programming of the template, leaving the comment this broke the template. At File:101VIPatSYD wb denoise.JPG it’s actually your change that breaks the function. The link in File:101VIPatSYD wb denoise.JPG#Original upload log now only works, if spaces in the second parameter are changed to underscores. @32X: I cannot or it would break many more pages than it fixes. This template requires that the input be URL-encoded and always has. If you don't want to URL-encode, then you can alternatively use the raw parameter.

File deletion

Hello Magog the Ogre, I would like your advice on whether I am allowed to nominate File:Lion Crest with Paintbrush.svg for deletion. It is not educationally useful, not official and entirely fictional. The file was created out of bits from other files that are already on Commons, as a result its deletion would not be a loss. Personally I no longer wish to use this file on my user page, I would like to use something else (perhaps something less serious). But I also do not wish the file to remain on Commons to mislead anyone in future. In my opinion the quality image status for this file is totally undeserved and it was nominated without my input. Updating Module:Dir/RTL overrides and Template:Dir

Could you update the language lists for directionality:

Many new languages (or script variants) have been added in MediaWiki (including as well on translatewiki.net) since the time they were locked (and new ones are coming now, from Translatewiki.net and Wikimedia Incubator)

Such update is required for RTL languages (not all of them included in MediaWiki for now, so they have an incorrrect "ltr" direction by default) and multilingual descriptions. It is also required to avoid using costly calls to the MediaWiki parser from Lua for missing languages: we are limited to at most 20 languages for such languages (after that MediaWiki will not load language resources), so the lists also provide explicit LTR languages that are missing to avoid such calls. As well from MediaWiki templates, the template version does not call Lua for performance reasons, so the module and Template should be updated at the same time to keep the list of RTL languages in sync,

@Antoniosvb: the issue is that you're uploading a copyrighted image to Commons. But Commons doesn't allow copyrighted images. In order to add the image to the article, you need to upload it as fair use to English Wikipedia, which is a different upload mechanism.

May I recommend that you slow down and carefully read what people are writing? I clearly stated above that you need to upload it as a non-free file but you chose the option for free work. I will give more granular instructions:
  • Click this link: w:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard.
  • Click the button which says Upload a non-free file.
  • Choose the option for This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use.
  • Fill out the options in the dropdown accordingly.
  • Let me know when you've uploaded.

  • You copied and pasted the website into several of the fields. The purpose of showing the image is not a URL.

Mass deletion of national anthem files

Hi. I was checking on the deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/File:National Anthem of Guatemala by US Navy Band.ogg. It was granted by User:Natuur12 even though my question was never answered and not even addressed. Because I am going to appeal such deletion in the appropriate page, I was checking the logs and noticed there was a mass deletion of national anthem files that you requested to be deleted. Given that I have concerns about the deletion of the National Anthem of Guatemala file, I was wondering, did you check each individual anthem to see if your rationale applied to that specific case or did you just assume that all the anthems were still under copyright law or a mix of those two actions? @Thinker78: it really depends upon a number of factors. Just because a nation adopts an anthem doesn't necessarily take the copyright away from the creator. Was the song in circulation before it was adopted as the anthem? Was it written by a private citizen, a foreigner, an employee, or a work for hire? What are the laws and customs of the government in question?
I likely did a check on the the life of the composer and/or lyricist if not the govenrment copyright term on each of these. It's been 4 years and I do not recall anything for sure. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:31, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

I could really use some help

I know you don't want OgreBot edits requests here and I have already made some requests on the appropriate page to which you made a response so have made direct requests to an admin to modify User:Ww2censor/Recent philatelic uploads. However, I am still getting regular daily failure notices despite having got some exclusion made. The problem is that even when I view the logs carefully, I cannot see or find the offending categories that are flooding the bot's gallery function. Can you possibly have a look at the logs and advise if you see where the problem lies. I know you are not as active as you used to be but a week of failures is very frustrating for me, so hope you can take a few moments to give me some advise on what to do next. @Ww2censor: there are a few problems with your gallery. The first is that you're pulling in 29 (!) different categories. The second is that you're not excluding high enough subcategories. You excluded Benjamin Franklin but not Category:Postmasters General of the United States. So the next time some well-known postmaster gets added to a category, suddenly you'll find yourself in the massive category tree. Persistent vandalism

Hey @Magog the Ogre i been working weeks to update the Vermont county maps with the new standard style accurately depicting Grand Isle but another user is constantly reverting them back to the old style. It's getting really annoying and i can't keep up so would you please put a protection lock for the following pages? The Vermont gubernatorial county election maps for the years 1992 through 2022 The us senate county maps 1988 through 2022 The presidential county maps 2000 through 2020 Just make sure they are reverted back please because the vandal might have reverted them back again. I am aware of TK's odd proclivity to revert to the old shapes format, but User:SteveTheElectionGuy2001's edit to this was a good shading correction, assuming the statistics on WP are correct, and I would like to request it be reverted. Speaking of the shapes I would like to note that Steve's ban block may have been in error; he does not seem to exhibit the same shapes-reverting behavior as Tyler although I suppose there could have been Checkuser evidence I do not know of. @Duonaut: you will need to take that up with the CU.
The problem here is this guy has been edit warring, screwing with shapes, overwriting, sockpuppeting, ignoring messages, and acting as a pure nuisance for months if not years. Frankly, it doesn't matter if he's making good edits. He mixes good (correct outcomes) with bad (distorted shapes and edit warring). I'm not going to waste my time disentangling when he can't be arsed to do it himself.

Yeah, I've been editing a lot of politics articles and have followed Tyler's shapes antics since he started around the midterms (maybe earlier) and had a run-in with him before that because of some issue he had with a shading edit of mine. Assuming Steve is actually his alt I have no problems with his block — less opportunity for him to screw around. But I will post about it on AN just to be certain, wouldn't want an innocent to be caught in the crosshairs of this. for the ohio 2022 senate map in knox county Vance got 60 percent and in pike county he got 70 percent of the vote.
for the vermont governor map Scott actually got 70 percent of the vote in windsor and addison counties and the vermont house map needs to be updated in chitteden county balint got 70 percent of the vote

Re: Logos

Can you explain why the Gateway logo and the PC Partner logos meet the threshold of originality, so that I don't step on any copyright holder's toes in the future? For reference I use File:Nikon Logo.svg and File:Cyberpunk 2077 logo.svg as my benchmarks for whether a logo can be considered public domain (e.g. gradients and flourishes don't automatically bring the sum of the parts past the threshold, in the eyes of the United States gov't). I have restored the uploads in question as I no longer believe they are open and shut.
