File:Castle sign small.jpg

Hi. You flagged File:Castle sign small.jpg as "probably" not protected by {{FoP-Ireland}}. I have cited the relevant sections of the law (link to offical text provided in my citation) to demonstrate that photographs of art in public places do not violate copyright law in Ireland (see the file's deletion request). As an administrator, would you mind closing the deletion request? It has been open for five weeks. Thank you. O'Dea (talk) 04:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Dubious image

Hello. I'd like to bring a problem to your attention regarding these[1] [2] images. The same image, different descriptions...Kalilaths (talk) 07:23, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

@Kalilaths: that's... bizarre. You seem to have stumbled upon a 100-year-old error or fraud. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:29, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
Bizarre, yes. Both sources seem reliable and it is hard to determine which description is the accurate one. I'll check the sources thoroughly. Kalilaths (talk) 16:47, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Delete revisions help

Hi Magog, would you be able to help me out? File:Brown University logo.svg and File:University of Chicago wordmark.svg have had non-free versions uploaded by User:KarimKoueider and they need deleted. File:Babyjey.jpg

Hi Magog,

I found the Wikipedia article about my band and uploaded one of our promo photos. I am in the band and own the photo (it was taken with my phone, on self-timer). The claim is that I did not give permission for the photo, but in fact, I sent a signed letter on July 3rd, 2018 to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Are you able to update this and reverse the deletion request?

Thanks

Administrator's noticeboard.

Hi there. I have recently noticed issues with the edits made by the user Giorgi Balakhadze. He was first edit-warring on File:Location of the de facto Republic of Abkhazia in Eastern Europe.svg and later globally replaced that map with one that he was trying to push earlier. After addressing the issue on his user page he was very hostile and used aggressive wording by refusing further dialogue and telling me it was a waste of time talking to me. After doing some digging in his upload history I noticed a number of files that he has been POV pushing in before and brought them up on his talk page and also on an administrator's noticeboard as he did not want further dialogue. I also saw that in his block log you were the one who has previously blocked him for previous disruptive behaviour, and you were also the one who unblocked him on the basis that he will change this behaviour, which is why I thought it would be appropriate to ask you to take a look at the report I made here Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Actions of Giorgi Balakhadze, as well as at Giorgi's comments and actions. Other administrators expressed that they were too busy at the moment, so I really hope you can take a look at this issue. Thank you! --Relignments (talk) 19:38, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Discussion board

Hello Magog the Ogre, are there any appropriate pages to discuss or request deletion for dubious images? BTW, what is the difference between "own work" and "original research" on the Commons? And can we request deletion for the images that are based on unreliable sources? (e.g. personal blogs)? If so, could you please link me some helpful pages? Cheers. Kalilaths (talk) 11:56, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

Edit: I think, I have found out (by having a look at your contribs) how to request this. Kalilaths (talk) 20:20, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

@Kalilaths: there is a link under the tools section on your screen. It says "nominate for deletion." That is a catchall way to handle unreliable images. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:27, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

I wrote the template badly, and the bot broke it, not repaired. Zwiadowca 21 10:02, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

@Zwiadowca21: thanks. I'll take a look at what happened there. It's definitely a case of garbage in, garbage out, so I'm not sure if I'll make any fixes quite yet. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 10:10, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Help on photo

Hi, Magog. Would you be able to help me with a deletion request? I am needing redirects File:Robert L. Wilkie official photo.jpg and File:Robert L. Wilkie official photo (cropped).jpg deleted so I can upload a new photo that is different. I jumped the gun and assumed that his acting Secretary of the VA photo was going to be his official SECVA photo... but it's not! Thanks, Corky 01:02, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: I'm not clear what you're trying to do here. But I don't like to delete long-standing redirects since the old URL might be used by non-WMF wikis (e.g., legacy Wikivoyage) and websites. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:06, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
His official photo as the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affair is this image. This image was his acting sercretary photo - two different images. Basically, the new official image I've linked would be uploaded under "Robert L. Wilkie official photo.jpg"... I can create a different name for the new version if that is preferred, but I'd like to stick with the standard naming for the Trump Administration photos if possible. Hope that helps! Corky 01:18, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
I decided to use portrait instead. Thanks, Corky 05:19, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: sorry I was mulling over how I wanted to handle that. I guess it shouldn't be a problem if you decide to use the title you asked. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 10:08, 8 August 2018 (UTC)
No worries! I had got to thinking and realized that his middle initial isn't used in the article title, so I went ahead and uploaded it under File:Robert Wilkie official portrait.jpg which still falls under tbe standard naming for Trump Administration personnel. Corky 15:53, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Give your feedback about changes to Special:Block

Hello,

You are receiving this message because you are a top user of Special:Block on this wiki. Thank you for the important work that you do. There is a discussion happening about plans to improve Special:Block with the ability to set new types of blocks. To get the best design and new functions added, it is essential that people who use the tool join the discussion and share their opinions about these changes.

Instead of a full site wide block, you would be able to set a Partial Block. A user could be blocked from a single page, multiple pages, one or more namespaces, from uploading files, etc. There are several different ways to add this feature to Special:Block. Right now Important decisions are being made about the design and function.

Please review the page on Meta and share your feedback on the discussion page. Or you can reach me by email Also, share this message with anyone else who might be interested in participating in the discussion.

I appreciate any time that you can give to assist with making improvements to this feature. Cheers, SPoore (WMF) (talk) , Trust and Safety Specialist, Community health initiative (talk) 02:00, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

OgreBot 2 broke a license

Crime scene - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:38, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: it actually seems like one of the templates is broken. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:27, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
I don't get it. {{LangSwitch|en=''{{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}''}} works, {{Original text/i18n|text|text={{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}}} doesn't. Other templates with tables like {{Notice}} have the same problem. The answer is probably somewhere in the escape room. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:54, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
File:Rita5dayqpf.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

stained glass windows copyright

Hi Magog,

I am still trying to figure out copyright/stained glass art. I have included my question for Alexis Jazz after I got your message. She had recently explained the panorama tag/copyright stained glass issue to me. I plan on changing the copyright tag for the Flickr photos of stained glass to "PD-art|PD-1923". If you still see a problem with this tag, please let me know. My question for Alexis is below, and her response. MauraWen (talk) 19:02, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Extended content

Hi Alexis, I thought I understood (now) the copyright/PD issue for stained glass in England. I am using the panorama copyright UK for stained glass windows, both on Flickr images and one photo I scanned from a book. Is that not correct? My St. Elizabeth of Hungary image is being flagged for deletion. Please advise. thx MauraWen (talk) 18:08, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@MauraWen: FoP itself is not a license. It gives permission for what is depicted (the stained glass, or a statue, etc) but not for its depiction (the photograph). Which is interesting, I can't recall running into this before. What if the thing depicted is covered by FoP and the photograph is a slavish copy? I don't know. The stained glass that was installed before 1923 can be tagged {{PD-art|PD-1923}}, those where the author of the stained glass died more than 70 years ago {{PD-art|PD-old-auto|deathyear=1900}} or a combination: {{PD-art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1900}}. But if they didn't? It's still covered by FoP and Bridgeman v. Corel, but I wouldn't know how to license it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 18:31, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: I have nominated all files uploaded by User:Ramsky78 for deletion in the past two days as obvious screengrabs of Google Street View imagery, but it has been caught in the backlog and should be deleted immediately. Can you delete those (or speedily delete them) and warn the user, though the account has been dormant since March 2018.--TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 03:19, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: Can you please reply? It has been three days. Thanks. TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 01:19, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

@TagaSanPedroAko: sorry. In my opinion, this isn't time critical so it can wait the standard discussion time. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:31, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Since the mass deletion requests involve obvious copyvios (i.e. crops of Google Street View screen grabs), is it possible to have the files deleted immediately? It may take even a week or so, but for very obvious violations, we can delete them immediately. --TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 01:35, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
@TagaSanPedroAko: It is obvious in a few instances but I would prefer to wait for community consensus. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:40, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: We may wait for any other users, especially those involved in photos of places in the Philippines, but how can we invite others to that discussion? That part is something I don't know. Since the copyvios are spotted too late, I would agree on having community consensus first, but there are only a few users working of images of the Philippines who may be looking on any relevant discussions.--TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 01:49, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
@TagaSanPedroAko: we normally don't for a routine request like this one. An administrator will give everyone a few weeks to respond, and then make a decision. If the uploader provides no coherent explanation, it will usually resolve in a delete. The system isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:15, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: It has been three weeks since the DR was created, but no action has been taken. We couldn't just invite someone working with Philippines-related imagery to the DR, but should this be prioritized. We may consider a delete or a speedy delete, whichever depending on consensus.--TagaSanPedroAkoTalk -> 23:07, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
@TagaSanPedroAko: sorry we move as fast as we can. I've deleted this one. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:48, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

About a picture deleted...

I saw this in my watch list that was deleted. The veredict said that was a picture not blurred, but I remember that the picture was already blurred. It's possible to restore the picture from the link? If there's not blur areas, i'll modify it to make it fair.

Also, about this category, I remember that the category had the number exactly of 274 or 275 pictures, but, today I went there to check, and was surprised that there's only 245 images in this category. I don't know if a bunch of pictures were deleted, or the category "bemani" was removed. Can you help me with that? My reagards.--VictorPines (talk) 20:30, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Bonjour,

India national team at Olympics pic removal

May I know the reason of your recent activity in India national football team of removal a pic of India_national_team_at_Olympics_1948.jpg from the page and removal of the pic from User:Dey subrata wikimedia commons page. I am a responsible editor here, and when I am doing something I do it with responsiblity. That pic was taken in 1948, and since then its in Public domain.http://blog.cpdfootball.de/2013/03/23/exclusive-indias-1948-europe-tour-the-first-international-match/ , https://www.sbs.com.au/yourlanguage/punjabi/en/article/2018/06/15/indias-forgotten-soccer-glory , https://www.sportskeeda.com/football/almost-famous-first-indian-international-football-team-1948-olympics The copy righst laws say:

For photographs taken before before 50 years, that is 16 September 1957, copyright for the image or pictures expires after 50 years of its creation. All such photographs are therefore in the public domain.
This is a Indian football page, not USA soccer page, please respect the origin of the page and don't do any edits without counsulting with the editors of a page. Here we follow 50 years rule in Indian, like the Crown prerogative copyrighty, it may be different in USA.

I hope you understand, and undo your work, and reinstate the pic in the India National football team page. Thank you. --- Dey subrata (talk) 08:03, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

I uploaded all of these because they had been reviewed years ago and passed the inspection way back when. I did miss the cc-by-sa-4.0 when they're cc-by-2.0, but I think the licenses may have changed over the years. Evrik (talk) 22:04, 28 September 2018 (UTC)

OgreBot 2 "own" tagging

Good morning Magog, please see [4]. OgreBot 2 tagged it as {{Own}} when in reality it was something I transferred from :en. I'm assuming it read the "I ... created this work entirely by myself", but it missed that it was a transfer, not me actually saying that. --B (talk) 11:34, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

@B: thanks for the note. In general, we have used the own template on Commons also to refer to the original uploader. I did make a template to clear up the confusion: {{Own work by original uploader}}. However, the template isn't as widely used. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:54, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

User uploading the same image even after Copy-right violations

Hi, can you please have a look at User:DJ Kamal Mustafa. He has uploaded three versions File:Lieutenant Asim Munir.jpg under different names, first falsely claiming it be his own work then claiming it to be from the news outlet. None of these images are released under any license and the user either does not understand our policies or his deliberately violating them. Thanks. Adamgerber80 (talk) 18:43, 10 October 2018 (UTC)

@Adamgerber80: roughly speaking, the user should receive warnings twice after copyright violations, then a final notice ({{subst:end of copyvios}}), and then you can report at COM:ANU. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:06, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks.I gave them a first warning. Adamgerber80 (talk) 15:31, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

Hola, Magog. ¿Cómo estás?

Tengo una duda, con esta foto. ¿Cumple con las políticas? --C. Jonel [talk] 19:39, 17 October 2018 (UTC)

@C. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:02, 17 October 2018 (UTC)
Sí, pareciera que lo representara. Gracias, Magog. --C. Jonel [talk] 00:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Problems with an user and a IP (looks like the same person)

Hi, Magog. Can you block this user? This is that guy who hates pop'n music media stuff for strange reasons again... He created that account just for vandalism (See his contributions here) Thanks.--VictorPines (talk) 00:57, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi again, I was cheking the user contributions from the user mentioned before, and found this strange picture. Then I checked the user who uploaded that and saw his User page... Um, well, I have a question: Is this user real? He even puts an URL of a personal Wikipedia possibly created by him, I'm not sure. Maybe you should take a look...--VictorPines (talk) 01:16, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
@VictorPines: I'm not sure what you mean by "is he real?" The user has 6000 edits on English Wikipedia, if that means anything. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:30, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

File:Radical Party Ukraine.png

Hello, I see that this file was deleted, in March 2018, after you nominated it for discussion in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Radical Party Ukraine.png, with the rationale "Unclear if this falls under the threshold of originality in Ukraine." However, the copyright law of Ukraine states: "The following items shall not be objects of copyright: [...] symbols and signs of enterprises, institutions and organizations" (cf. Template:PD-UA-exempt and article 10 of the law). Then, the threshold of originality in Ukraine would not matter for images that are not copyrightable. So, the question on Commons should be if it falls under the threshold of originality in the United States. I see that you did not address this aspect in the discussion, and I don't know if that implicitly suggests that you thought that it is PD-ineligible in the United States. What do you think? (While we're on this topic, what would be your opinion about File:Agrarnaya-partiya-logo.png? Those two logos seem simple enough, to the difference of several other logos in Category:Logos of organizations of Ukraine that seem above the threshold of originality in the United States.) -- Asclepias (talk) 16:40, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

@Asclepias: the file itself was uploaded as PD-textlogo, which it probably isn't. However, it appears to be PD-UA-exempt. You can contact the deleting admin and ask for restoration. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:07, 5 November 2018 (UTC)

Uploads through Persian Wikipedia

Hi. I use User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users on a regular basis and I believe it is very helpful. I have also noticed the existence of User:-revi/kowiki whose galleries are updated by your bot. I am here to ask if the same idea can be implemented for Persian (fa) Wikipedia? If so, what should I do? Thank you. 4nn1l2 (talk) 21:16, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@4nn1l2: is there a tracking category? If so then yes. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:05, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I created Category:Uploaded from Persian Wikipedia using UploadWizard. It is empty now because it was created just a few minutes ago. Once I advertise for Campaign:fa at Persian Wikipedia and have associated links on sidebar fixed at fawiki, it will get inflow. I think the same configuration as kowiki is just fine for fawiki as well. Thank you. 4nn1l2 (talk) 16:51, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: How many files are you expecting per day? Where do you want the gallery? Any other options I should know? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:48, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
I think around 15 images per day. However, we can wait until Friday (weekend in Iran) to have a more accurate estimate. I prefer the galleries to be created in a subpage of your bot such as User:OgreBot/fawiki, but any other page is equally good. Regarding the configuration, creating galleries with colored tags and links to Google search just like User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users is superb. However, simple galleries like those listed at User:-revi/kowiki will also do the job. Thanks. 4nn1l2 (talk) 11:34, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Maybe Category:Uploaded via Campaign:fa is a better tracking category. Please take a look at this edit: Special:diff/326789852. When {{Uploaded from Persian Wikipedia}} is removed from the file page, Category:Uploaded from Persian Wikipedia using UploadWizard is also removed, but Category:Uploaded via Campaign:fa still remains. 4nn1l2 (talk) 23:43, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Can you please, eleborate why did you remove information about the original author (which seems to be inactive enwiki user)? Have you any reasonable doubt about authorship of this photo? Ankry (talk) 19:12, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

@Ankry: could you elaborate why you, a sysop, think it's acceptable to add false sourcing information? You can't just make up an author and a source because you wish it were so. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:41, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
Simply, because I cannot find clear information that explicite marking uploads as "own" was required there in 2006. Even Commons {{Own}} template is from 2008. In my understanding "reasonable doubt" is more towards to "serious doubt" than to "any doubt". Feel free to request to revoke my admin bit if you think that what I am doing is wrong for Wikimedia Commons. Ankry (talk) 20:02, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Rebirth10 (talk) 02:13, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Rebirth10 (talk) 02:16, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Rebirth10 (talk) 02:27, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

--Y.haruo (talk) 14:09, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Help with duplicates

Hello, I don't know quite how to deal with this. I usually don't like to get involved with other users, I just do my own thing. The files in question are File:Coat of Arms of Richard II of England (1377-1399).svg (originally uploaded in 2010) and File:Coat of Arms of Richard II of England (1377-1399) A.svg (a derivative). Should a user be allowed to upload duplicates of existing files only because of a disagreement about the documentation and templates on the file? Sodacan (talk) 15:01, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Note that no attempt to discuss is evident, neither before reverting Sarang in File:Coat of Arms of Richard II of England (1377-1399).svg #filehistory nor now. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:11, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
The duplicate file File:Coat of Arms of Richard II of England (1377-1399) A.svg has been deleted. Sodacan (talk) 15:31, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Sodacan: we encourage users to upload alternatives, as this keeps disagreements on content off of Commons, and on local wikis. This is explicitly allowed by the license you provided on your upload. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:42, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
