Question from Freddywaigwa

Hi Magog, I have seen your message about the copyright violation and would like to know more about it. Those pictures belongs to Adam Cushing and he provided links where i should download them. What am i supposed to do to avoid violation? *Not sure if i should reply via this are* — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freddywaigwa (talk • contribs) 05:00, December 14, 2017‎ (UTC)

@Freddywaigwa: Sure. When uploading someone else's work, things get a lot more complex. Could you please follow the instructions here: Commons:Email templates? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:22, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Magog. You left me a message that the above file could be deleted. Could you explain to me what the problem is, and maybe advise me how I might solve it? It's a translated version of the original file File:CaldwellStarChart.svg, which was released under CC-SA 3.0 (and later edited under the same terms by a second user). So I uploaded my translated version, copied over the license and other details from the original file, and added in my own name as the translator. So all three users involved have released their work under CC-SA 3.0 ... I think. If I should have done it differently, I'd be glad to know. Thank you! Andrew Dalby (talk) 20:00, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

... I've translated a couple of other svg maps in the same way, so, if I've omitted a necessary step, I can correct them all at the same time. Andrew Dalby (talk) 20:16, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Andrew Dalby:I left you that message over 6 months ago, and you already fixed it. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:25, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
How right you are! Very sorry to have troubled you Andrew Dalby (talk) 20:37, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

90%-100% County Win Color for Democrats?

I was just looking at various maps you have created over time (e.g. Gubernatorial, Senatorial etc.) and notice that there's no map where Democratic candidate has garnered over 90%-100% in any county, while there are Republicans who did so. But my question is about the color, does the color that reflects this 90%-100% vote win (a county one) for the Democrat exists? or it wasn't just created? Or maybe I missed some maps and maybe there is one? (I'm talking about those in the style of 2008 U.S. Senate election type not presidential ones). I hope you can answer me, thank you very much for your patience. P.S. Can it be created? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Go6thGA (talk • contribs) 15:47, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Go6thGA: it seems I do not have a color for it. Do you have one proposed? I might need to recreate a few maps. I created the colors from scratch. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:34, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunately no I don't have one proposed I need this color to create Virginia Senate maps from Harry Byrd Sr. who ran unopposed in the 60's and late 50's. But could you create one? I mean color not map. Actually scratch that one I have one I accidentally created in app called paint.net but how long it would take to create this one color?. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Go6thGA (talk • contribs) 16:59, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@Go6thGA: it doesn't seem to happen too often anymore, but here is an example: File:Virginia Senate Election Results by County, 2008.svg. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:24, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

2020 Senate map

Can you update this map for the seats up in 2018 to reflect a Democratic incumbent in Alabama, as Democrat Doug Jones won that Senate race today, and change Minnesota to an unknown incumbent as its Senator Al Franken will resign over his sexual misconduct scandal and a special election will be held in 2018? Also, could you make a map like you did for the Virginia governor races for the Alabama Senate race? Here is a link to the results as reported by The New York Times: nytimes.com/elections/results/alabama-senate-special-election-roy-moore-doug-jones. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 04:09, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

@Count Awesome: Someone already did both of these things: File:2017 United States Senate special election in Alabama results map by county.svg. Is that good enough? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:33, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Could you change the map to reflect an unknown incumbent for Minnesota? There will be a special election held in November of next year to determine a new incumbent due to the resignation of Senator Franken. It's really rare for these Senate seats to change hands but last night in Alabama demonstrated that it can happen. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 02:44, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
@Count Awesome: at the risk of sounding flippant: editing a png file is one of the easiest things to do on here. Download the file, right click, edit (opens MS Paint), fill the section in question. If you use a Mac, there are ways on there too. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:19, 14 December 2017 (UTC)

The computer I use is an HP laptop and it had me use some kind of different built in thing. I managed to manually shade in Minnesota on there but I was blocked from uploading it due to it being a zip file. If you or someone you know could fill in the map, it would really be appreciated. I'm really sorry about this because I really did try to upload a new map but I'm just not that savy on uploading images to Wikipedia. Count Awesome (talk) 04:35, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

Invitation to Blocking tools consultation

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team is inviting all Wikimedians to discuss new blocking tools and improvements to existing blocking tools in December 2017 for development work in early 2018.

National Action Symbol

Hey Magog, Ive added in the National Action Logo onto this site so I could put it into the wiki page for the organization. Why was it taken down? from the source I found I couldn't find who made it and when, only when it was uploaded to the archive. If you could please tell me why the .png file was removed that would be helpful, because I plan on re-adding it to the commons if you dont get back to me.

Thanks, Scu_ba — Preceding unsigned comment added by Scu ba (talk • contribs) 02:21, December 19, 2017‎ (UTC)

@Scu ba: I believe the message on your talk page gives the answer to these questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:35, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: It only says that it was a copyright violation, However the image in question falls into public domaine.
@Scu ba: no, it doesn't. Please read the message more carefully. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:47, 20 December 2017 (UTC)

Редактиране описанието на файл Gotco Mitov.jpg

Possible pictures brought from Google

Hi, Magog. I found these pictures, and I put them a speedy deletion templates because they don't look created by the uploader, and some of them I think they were scanned from a magazine, or even brought from internet and shrunk to avoid any violation:

Most of them doesn't provide an aproppiate link. My regards.--VictorPines (talk) 05:13, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

1990 and 1994 Tennessee gubernatorial election map requests

Over the past couple of days, I have worked on developing pages for the Tennessee gubernatorial elections of 1990 and 1994. 2011 West Virginia gubernatorial election map request

Could you make a map for the special gubernatorial election held in West Virginia in 2011? It would be interesting to see on a map because Logan County was carried by the Democratic candidate Earl Ray Tomblin by a percentage of 91.61%, with the election being contested by a Republican as well. It is exceptionally rare for a Democratic candidate to claim such a large percentage of the vote in an election. I would really appreciate it if you could make this map. Thanks! PD ineligible

I noticed that you've added a couple of images I made, File:Ecosia-globe.jpg and File:Ecosia-globe.png, to User:Magog the Ogre/PD ineligible/2018 January 1-3, but you've left no reply to my message at Template talk:PD-textlogo#Ecosia globe or posted anything on my talk page here or at the English Wikipedia. May I ask what your intentions are? Do you consider the images to be above the threshold of originality? And do you intend to delete them? If so I'd like to make a case for keeping them. Please keep me apprised. nagualdesign 18:58, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

[Messages removed]
I see now that you weren't responsible for adding the images to that page; they were placed there by OgreBot. Sorry for the confusion. I'm sure you understand. nagualdesign 19:43, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
@Nagualdesign: additionally, if you want to send someone a message, you'll need to include a link to their userpage, so that they get a notification - just as I have done with you in this response. I had no way of knowing you left me a message. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:47, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre: Sorry but I don't understand. This is your user page, isn't it? I thought that simply leaving a message here would have alerted you. And the message I left at Template talk:PD-textlogo#Ecosia globe wasn't for you specifically. I'd never heard of you until OgreBot added those images to one of your user pages. I also didn't receive a notification about this, even though you included a link! Anyhoo.. Are the images PD eligible? nagualdesign 03:52, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
@Nagualdesign: On my talk page I will see the message regardless. I was referring to other pages. You're literally the one who marked the images ineligible. My bot only reported this information. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:09, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Wait.. what?! Could you please explain how I did that? I genuinely had no idea until you told me just now. I reported the image at Template talk:PD-textlogo#Ecosia globe as I thought that full disclosure was probably a good idea. Did I inadvertently copy/paste a template to the file description page or something? I'll remove it now if I can. Also, I'm still on tenterhooks as to whether you think the images should be deleted. nagualdesign 02:38, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
...Okay, I think I see it now. I copy/pasted {{PD-textlogo}} and {{Trademark}} when I uploaded the images, and have since delete the {{Trademark}} templates. What a knob! Hehe.. nagualdesign 02:47, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
@Nagualdesign: I'm thinking probably not, honestly. We have a gallery of what constitutes "too simple for copyright" at COM:TOO. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:32, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for that. Sorry for all the confusion. We live and learn. nagualdesign 19:35, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick, but I said "I'm still on tenterhooks as to whether you think the images should be deleted" and then you wrote "I'm thinking probably not, honestly." I thought you meant that they would probably not be deleted, but now I see that you've deleted them. Having looked at COM:TOO I would have thought that Ecosia-globe.jpg was at least less of a copyright infringement than File:Subway restaurant.svg, for example. I would have thought a small map of the Earth cannot be copyrighted, and a circle certainly can't. What about it did you think was PD-ineligible? And would it be okay to upload something broadly similar? nagualdesign 02:23, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

@Nagualdesign: Very well. I have restored it and brought it to DR in order to get community consensus. Feel free to make your case there. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:28, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you. nagualdesign 02:29, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Help not that the logo is in violation of copyright

Hello, I would like to know how to make sure that the logo is not in violation of the copyright? Which license do I have to choose for a logo? thank you--Bilal-elha (talk) 06:54, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

@Bilal-elha: You will need to upload the file to your each local wiki as fair use. An example for your latest upload is here: fr:Fichier:Aston-martin-red-bull-logo.jpg. Some wikis don't accept fair use; for these, you cannot upload the logo at all, unfortunately. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:56, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

Help Restore my User

Hello administrator Magog the Ogre, it's a real pleasure to meet you, I'm writing to tell you that my users have been locked in infinite time, on June 28th 2017 at 06:36; for the accusation of abusing multiple accounts, which is not true because I have been mistaken for an a3cb1 sockpuppet that this would also be a vandal with which I have no connection whatsoever. and of course the administrator User: Krd, based on this assumption completely emptied me the use of all his files which I had that my users were mainly composed of portraits of the Italian and European nobility, cardinal roman church, as well as many paintings by European and American painters, and in the proper descriptions I have always tried to put the right license in place if the author of the work no longer held the copyrights. so I ask her if she can restore the user and all her priceless content, which for me was a source of great pride. Thank you and have a good day, and may you make the rumor that I'm not the well-known vandal I've been exchanged for. Link of my blocked file: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/L%C3%BBgn%C3%BBg --87.0.97.151 12:27, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

@Guanaco, Krd: pardon if I'm feeding the troll here, but can you explain this one to me? I see it came up confirmed as sockpuppet in a RFCU. However, I note that the uploader was actually using the correct licensing and sourcing, which is probably what got A3 blocked in the first place. So this block and deletions may have been counterproductive. And is there any chance of a false positive? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
At one point I gave this person the standard offer: stay away for six months, and I'll advocate for their unblock. But based on what they've said and done since, they're driven to edit and won't stop. In the past there were many copyvios, miscategorizations, and other problems. Krd and I decided to roll back everything from some of the accounts because it was at least as much bad as good.
They've shown incompetence and stubbornness, but not the destructive intent of other long-term block evaders. I've noticed that the more recent uploads and edits are generally fine. It might be pragmatic to allow them a single account and try working with them now. If it works, we have one more productive editor. If not, we can go back to sock-hunting. Guanaco (talk) 03:28, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
They user obviously appeared in the CU request. They have the same edit pattern, uploading files of which most could really be pd-old (or pd-italia), but some are not, and the information provided is not exact in many cases. See their talk page. I personally don't see any room for unblock. If you think I'm mistaken, please advise. --Krd 06:34, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
A1cb3 was very young at first block and he still is. In years I didn't see any improvement in his attitude to lie, canvass, insult and try doing the biggest mess to hide himself. I did a series of attempt to catalyze, all of them resulted in anything but a series of insults and weird excuses. At the very beginning he also inserted false info to "exalt the House of Savoy", now he seems to stopped doing this but his genuine ignorance drives his to a pile of factual mistakes which he suddenly propagates to dozens of wikis. For a fair amount of years I'm not going to accept requests for unlock (if any, he never made one) about him, hoping he'll eventually reach a decent level of maturity and accountability. --Vituzzu (talk) 14:07, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
@Guanaco, Krd, Vituzzu: guys I'm conflicted on this. I trust all of your opinions, and yet this user was exhibiting no disruption and contributing well to the project. On the other hand, s/he doesn't see to have any edits on another project, which is suspicious. I also can't really speak to the likelihood of a false positive, since I didn't perform the CU; but I remain open to any possibilities, with a skeptical eye. Also, what is your connection to the singer? The article has been repeatedly recreated by "meatpuppets" at a PR firm, and the article you wrote sounds like a bit like an advertisement. Ping User:RHaworth as a courtesy. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:24, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
@Magog the Ogre User:RHaworth: Firstly, accept my appology for replying late, because i went to buy few books today. I must confess, i love reggae music so much that i decided to follow various singers making airwaves and reading about them from newspapers and other on discography websites to enable listen on spotify. In this case of veteran singer Winning Jah, i don't have any affiliation with him not even his fan but i listen to his music on youtube for two months now, i was shocked when a page i created recently got deleted by veteran editors and Admins on Wikipedia, without me knowing about the previous meatpuppets, who wrote the articles, like a promotional material. Recently, i would plead both of you to help edit it wherever you found a slight word that seems to be a bit advertisement, i would sincerely appreciate corrections, i never welcome any rude behaviour, am also here to learn, helping me to edit any contribution will also be a credit on my part of wikipedia, so i could merit a good award here, thanks. As for that of notability, i saw his releases, where he featured Steven Marley, in various notable newspaper, Which also called him Nigeria reggae icon, inside me, for someone to have created a religion of over 1 thousand persons at initial stage is awesome, if also his music got on Famous mainstream NGO'S like UNICEF and Amnesty International, i think that is also notable, let's also think about his first album in the 1990 on discog and notable news papers cited it, firstly i translated this from italian to english, i couldn't use it because it was't in English (
https://www.obiettivonews.it/2017/11/07/reggae-il-24-novembre-in-uscita-il-nuovo-album-di-winning-jah-africa-inside-me/ ), Premiumtimes is also a national newspaper, (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/entertainment/music/248390-reggae-star-winning-jah-announces-release-new-album.html) Vanguard is also a reliable newspaper, (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/11/winning-jah-bounces-back-africa-inside-album/) (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/11/stop-arresting-marijuana-smokers-winning-jah-advices/) Dailytimes news also (https://dailytimes.ng/winning-jah-appologised-ministry-justice-religious-entity/) this are just few, and many more i saw online, amazing thing, his coverages were mostly on national newspapers and not paid blogs, for the blogs i could get online were also Nigeria reliable entertainment blogs like (Jaguda) and this positive review about his music video (https://www.ukfilmreview.co.uk/single-post/2017/11/14/Winning-Jah-C-Krit-music-video) Voce pinerolose is also a printed newspaper in Italy, i translated from Italian language to english, the article was huge with a complete coverage also (http://www.vocepinerolese.it/articoli/2017-11-21/re-del-reggae-esce-con-nuovo-album-13163) with the few i just demonstrated in good faith, i kindly request the unblock and revert of the singer's article i wrote, if possible help, writing it more better, so i shouldn't be label with unknown hoodlums that earlier wrote promotional article , which is forbiden in wikipedia, thanks. @Vanjagenije: this is starting to look like a case of mistaken identity to me. There may have been sockpuppetry at first, but the notability is real, and this latest account is acting unlike the originals. I have been feeling uneasy about this for a while, actually. I'm inclined to restore the article and unblock this user. I am open to other opinions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:18, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

There's no way this isn't the same person. It's not just the recreation of this one article, but repeated recreation under varying titles. There are also stylistic similarities in their writing. Compare this to the wall of text above, for example. Sir Sputnik (talk) 22:42, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Regarding User:Hedning

Hello!! I see that your bot has marked User:Hedning as a new user with fewer than 150 edits on Commons. I personally know Hedning well (we have contributed on the project: Category:Images from Akademiska Föreningens arkiv) and can hereby confirm that he is certainly no newbie since he's identical with User:Hedning~commonswiki who has uploaded hundreds of pictures over the years. The original name of that account was also User:Hedning, but for reasons unknown to me it was a couple of years ago automatically changed to User:Hedning~commonswiki. For some reason Hedning has now somehow (and perhaps unaware of it) managed to regain his old username; thus the false impression that he is a new user. /FredrikT (talk) 10:29, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

2004 Barack Obama Illinois Senate Map request

Hi Magog. I hope I am not bothering you with my requests, but I would really appreciate it if you could make a map for the 2004 Senate election in Illinois, which was won by future President Barack Obama. Thanks! Count Awesome (talk) 02:48, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@Count Awesome: ✓ Done File:Illinois Senate Election Results by County, 2004.svg. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:36, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Is there any way you could do maps for George W. Bush's gubernatorial runs in Texas for 1994 and 1998? Also, could you do maps for his brother Jeb in Florida? I would really appreciate it! Count Awesome (talk) 04:55, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Count Awesome: done for GWB. I need years for Jeb, though. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:06, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the George W. Bush maps! Jeb ran for Governor of Florida in 1994, but was narrowly defeated. He was elected governor in 1998 and reelected in 2002. It is these years I am requesting. Count Awesome (talk) 05:13, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

2017 Alabama Senate Map request

Could you change the formatting on the map for the 2017 special election map to be the same as the map for the 2016 Senate election? The boundaries of the counties in the 2016 map appear much more defined than the 2017 map. I would really appreciate if you could either fix the pre-existing map or develop a new map based of your previous Alabama Senate map. Thank you very much! @Count Awesome: this is done. Hopefully I don't get any pushback for overwriting. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:33, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Dear Magog the Ogre,

Can you mark these 2 images that I uploaded please?

I wanted to upload the full-resolution version of Geograph image 3101480 so that File:Garda Patrol Boat on the Liffey.jpg could be marked as a derivative of it (since it's quite a severe crop of the original). Uploads by Fhsig13

Hi Magog the Ogre. After looking at the post you left at User talk:Fhsig13#File:LS Badge.jpg last February, I am wondering if similar cleanup might need to be done for some of Fhsig13's other uploads, particularly the road sign files. It looks like a of Fhsig13's uploads are licensed as {{Self}}, which means he/she is claiming ownership over them and releasing them under certain conditions. Maybe in some of these cases this is OK, but he/she also seems to be under the impression that downloading a file from somewhere, altering it in some way, and then reuploading to Commons means that it is automatically makes it 100% his/her own work.

For example, File:TCH-1 (BC).svg was uploaded by a different editor as {{PD-Canada}}; the uploader is not claiming they created the original imagery, but rather that its not eligible for copyright protection under Canadian copyright law. Fhsig13 uploaded the similar File:TCH-401 (BC).png and File:TCH-401 (BC) 2.png, however, as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, which is not exactly the same as PD. Assuming that the licensing of the PD file is correct, then it seems that Fhsig13 uploads can and should be licensed in a similar manner. The cc-by-sa-4.0 license implies that file is still under copyright, and there are also requirements related to attribution and relicensing; the PD does not, however, imply any existing copyright ownership and there are no requirements related to attribution or relicensing.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but it seems I can use the PD THC-1 file to create a new file which is for the most part identical to Fhsig13's TCH-401 files simply by replacing the route number. Since my creation would be based upon a PD image and since I doubt simply changing the route number from "1" to "401" would be considered a "significant amount of additional creativity to establish a new copyright, my creation would most likely also need to be licensed as "PD-Canada". No attribution would be needed in this case. If, however, I try to do the reverse by using one of the THC-401 files to create a new THC-1 file, then I would (1) have to attribute Fhsig13 and (2) use a license equivalent to "cc-b-sa-4.0".

I have no idea where Fhsig13 gets the files he/she is uploading, but most of them such as File:MWO.jpg, File:4-MAJOR-GENERAL-W.A.-HOWARD-MEDAL.png, File:Canucks01.png and File:Canucks03.png (these last two might be related to Commons:Deletion requests/File:CanucksBySeason.png) are listed a "Cross-wiki upload from commons.wikimedia.org" and are not provided with any source other than "own work", and there's no EXIF data as well to show they are original photographs. The signs, medals, etc. shown in these files had to have been created by someone somewhere. If that person is Fhsig13, then fine; however, that seems unlikely to be the case for most of these. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:48, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: bluntly, the majority of users just aren't careful about copyright, for one reason or another. I suggest you nominate any suspicious files you find for deletion. If I get fed up with a user, I'll often nominate items that are probably free for another reason if the user gave the wrong license, since I don't want to waste my time on something the original uploader couldn't be arsed to do correctly.
If you think the issue is systematic and the user has ignored repeated warnings, please bring it to COM:ANU. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:17, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:08, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

OK, so my picture upload is listed on the bot page. Can someone link it to the page?

I saw that the Wikipedia page about Kalapana, Hawaii does not offer a current photo, so I uploaded a picture that I snapped today to Wikipedia Commons. (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kalapana,_HI,_county_parking,_start_of_the_lava_trail_2018-Feb-3.jpg) Will this photo be linked to the Kalapana, Hawaii Wikipedia page by someone? Anyone?

While on the Kalapana, Hawaii Wikipedia page, I tried to press "Edit" to see if I can link the photo myself to the page, but I got a rocket science level code editing UI into my face that just boggled my mind. Hi, Alikhan090 has been consistently uploading copyright images on Wikimedia Commons and the English Wikipedia. Uploading image

So can you guide me whats the legal and simple way of uploading pics. How we can upload pics from general internet other than our own camera Alikhan090 (talk) 05:36, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Alikhan090: hello. In general, you can upload pictures that you have taken; most other pictures you cannot upload to Commons. There are some exceptions, but they are pretty complicated; here is an essay if you're interested: Commons:Copyright rules.
You can sometimes upload logos or pictures of dead people as "fair use" on English Wikipedia. Living people you cannot. If you want more guidance, I can provide you some examples. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:56, 10 February 2018 (UTC)

Can you review this please sir?Rudra Tenio Chakraborty (talk) 13:23, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

@Rudra Tenio Chakraborty: you did everything right by checking the license, but it looks like the person who uploaded it to Flickr was themselves doing so in violation of copyright. It doesn't happen often but it's usually pretty easy to spot; we call it Flickr washing. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:20, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

About a license file

Hi, recently you sent me a message that the file File:REM map.png will be deleted 7 days after if there's no permission from the author. I contacted the author by email yesterday, and I sent them the email link to send the permission, and you will probably receive the permission for this file this week. I think that there's will not have major problems to get a permission for this file. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bill Wong (talk • contribs) 17:13, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

@Bill Wong: Hi. When they send the email to OTRS, or you forward the response to OTRS, please replace the missing permission note with {{subst:op}}. This alerts administrators that they shouldn't delete your page immediately, as it is awaiting confirmation. Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:28, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
OK, but maybe I will not know when they will send the permission to OTRS, I don't know if they will respond to me by email to tell me about that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bill Wong (talk • contribs) 17:34, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
@Bill Wong: that's technically true, but it's unlikely. My experience is that creators almost always inform the petitioners when they send an email to OTRS. Even if that does happen, a volunteer will restore the image. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 21:23, 11 February 2018 (UTC)

I uploaded this photo because it has File:Cc-by new white.svg icon. But an editor deleted the file. Can you restore it? Please check yourself. I even used Google advanced search with filter "free to use and share" to be sure.

nl.wikipedia → de.wikipedia

How come? --Leyo 15:29, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

@Leyo: it removes the transferred nl.wikipedia.org from where it is redundant to the original upload log and there is another source present. Then the original description page got clobbered because the bot got confused by the unorthodox manner of local upload of another local upload. As far as I am concerned, this is an edge case and probably not worth spending much time on. Let me know if you see it again and what you think the fix should be. File without source (url)

Hello, I've notice a File, File:副總長執行官陳寶餘.jpg, does not have any source (url) for verification, only the name of publisher (Military News Agency in Taiwan) is given. Is it necessary to add a {{No source since}} to it? --Howard61313 (talk) 14 February 2018 (Wed) 04:03 (UTC)

@Howard61313: technically any image without a source should be marked no source, except obvious cases. That image, on the other hand, is a rather flagrant copyright violation, and someone correctly marked it as such. You can do so in the future. Marking Trainpix and LOC files for deletion

These need fixing due to WMF server failures. Putting deletion dates on them is excessive as the source can be deduced from the title. In both cases a url can be easily made from the unique ID.

While my access is mobile phone, I'm not going to fix the text, but in almost every LOC case there is a matching jpeg or TIFF to copy a description from, just search the ID. -- (talk) 05:50, 24 February 2018 (UTC)
