It looks as though the local version of {{Oldffdfull}} is now broken since "files for deletion" was changed to "files for discussion" - for instance, see File talk:Azerbaijan Army 6.jpg. Do you have any ideas for fixing this for new discussions without breaking old ones? Kelly (talk) 08:33, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

@Kelly: yeah but it will be a pain. Feel free to ask around at VPT if you don't want to wait for me. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:53, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
Oh, there's no rush, obviously. I was thinking maybe it could somehow use the date in the template (I don't remember exactly what date it changed from "deletion" to "discussion"). But I'm afraid my template-coding knowledge is basically nil. Kelly (talk) 04:11, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
@Kelly: I believe I've caught most or all of the inclusions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:00, 26 June 2016 (UTC)

User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users

How necessary are these galleries? Could they be made into categories instead, so that every new pic isn't on a gallery page? This makes renaming the all-too-commonly badly-named files a complete pain, as it necessitates opening the OgreBot gallery first to rename the pic there, before one can rename the actual file, without cluttering up with a redirect. And when one opens the OgreBot gallery, it is always so large that it freezes or crashes ones' computer due: Script: https://commons.wikimedia.org/…skin=monobook&version=4cZqzpE0:12 being overloaded. Ideas for solutions, please? As a minimum, please make the galleries far smaller (about a tenth of the size) so things don't crash every time one of the galleries is opened. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 09:40, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

FWIW, I strongly disagree, and think the galleries are extremely useful, since they have such a high concentration of copyright violations and out-of-scope files... I don't often go down below users with 3 edits, but the majority of the files on the page are usually above that anyway. I suggest not renaming the file on the gallery if your computer crashes when trying to do so (therefore leaving either a redirect or a redlink). Categories would not work anywhere nearly as well. Storkk (talk) 09:57, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
@MPF: thanks for bringing these to my attention. A lot of users find the galleries helpful, so I believe the proper solution is to fix the script rather than remove the galleries. Which one are you using to perform moves? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:38, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! Yep, I guess I could live with it if the computer didn't freeze every time I opened one. Would also be nice though if one could instruct the Commons Delinker "Delete old filename after completing the rename" rather than leaving a redirect permanently cluttering the place up. No idea what the script is, it is I presume something internal within the wiki software, which I have no access to. But going to any large gallery page (more than around 250-300 pics?) makes things freeze or crash. - MPF (talk) 07:23, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
@MPF: what is your system configuration? That really shouldn't happen and points to something wrong with your browser. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:09, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
Ooof, not sure what you mean by "system configuration"! But it's been a long-standing problem, and on two different computers. - MPF (talk) 22:33, 1 July 2016 (UTC)
@MPF: it seems Commons got a lot more popular than I had realized, and the number of uploads has doubled in the last year. I've halved the gallery sizes since May 1. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:15, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! But it's also galleries from within the last few days where I've been having problems! Here's an example - MPF (talk) 21:58, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
Another problem gargantuan gallery: User:BRUTE/new uploads/2016 June - could it be split into sections, one day per gallery, please? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 22:18, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
@MPF: I just halved the gallery size in the past few hours. As for BRUTE/new uploads, I've deleted and deactivated that gallery altogether. User:BRUTE needs to monitor his galleries more closely, and it seems I need to write additional code to handle galleries which misbehave, lest I get my privileges revoked by the WMF. He was focusing pretty heavily on Herby for a while, but looks to have moved on now that Herby is on a long break. He seems to like mimicking other sockmasters. He also likes to create templates with images and insults that he then places on various talkpages and noticeboards. When I had to fight him a few months back, I was sorely missing the tools. He's an LTA, and may even be an old sockmaster with a new gimmick, though he's only in the nuisance category when it really comes to it. If you're around and he comes with a sock or two, he'll be hard to miss. INeverCry 03:57, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

Still capture from movie on The Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb)

Hello Magog the Ogre. I used a still capture photo of a film that is on the Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb) and it was removed (by you}. I am trying to understand the rules of copyright infringement. The website The Internet Movie Database can post a photo of the film like http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTMzMTkzOTY1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNjkxMTU4Mw@@._V1_SY1000_CR0,0,1306,1000_AL_.jpg, but it is still copyright infringement for anyone else to use that exact photo?--Mark v1.0 (talk) 12:40, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

My first example link to a copyright photo online doesn't seem to work. This one might http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050212/mediaviewer/rm2123202816 --Mark v1.0 (talk) 12:43, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

@Mark v1.0: no problem. It gets a little complicated, so bare with me here:
  • IMDb uses those video stills under a provision of law called fair use. That means they don't own the copyright, but they can use it anyway.
  • Commons as a matter of principle does not accept fair use media, even though legally we could. The reasons are complicated but have to do with the free and open nature of our copyright culture.
  • English Wikipedia, not Commons, does accept fair use, but only under fairly strict circumstances. In this case, you would only be able to upload a video still from the movie in order to illustrate the movie itself, or perhaps a character in the movie. If you are interested in uploading as fair use to English Wikipedia, let me know which article and I'll work on that for you.
Is this clear? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:05, 7 July 2016 (UTC)
Yes, a very clear answer. Thank you. I have some experience on Wikipedia, so I won't trouble you there.--Mark v1.0 (talk) 14:48, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

OgreBot

Hello.

I 'm very surprised, finding some pictures take by your bot to strange galleries. Look at File:ORP Mewa 2016 A 109.jpg for example. This is minesweeping device, and is used in four galleries. Let's agree, it's on war-ship, so maybe in watercrafts, but it is not in Łódź (city in Poland, 300 km from sea), never been in Paris and show no bridge (ship's or over river).

I'm not complaing, no harm for me or files, but it shows something is not correct, I suppose. Regards. Ciacho5 (talk) 21:05, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

@Ciacho5: thanks for the note. This is due to poor categorization on Commons in combination with users not watching their galleries. I think I am going to attach a warning to the top of each gallery because this causes too much confusion. I may also start removing galleries more often of users who aren't being vigilant. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:59, 11 July 2016 (UTC)
Also, I already have plans for a technical change that will catch misbehaving galleries in more situations. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:03, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

your deletion request

If you HAD bothered to check the image description you would have seen that the file was a derivative of another one that IS in the public domain. I had no idea how to properly tag it (and I didn't even see the usual wizard, what seems strange in retrospect), so please exchange the current tag {{De DZfG|1891|06|016|018}} with the proper one. Hi Magog,

I noticed that you have marked the file 'Pressefoto-Bernd-Sahner.jpg' with a having unclear license statement and that it will be deleted by next Sunday. However, today it has been deleted already. Maybe I didn't clearly state the copyright status in the license tag? Could you please help me to do so:

The copyright of the image is at the Universitätsklinik in Freiburg (engl. : University Medical Center Freiburg), which is offering the download and usage for reports about Bernd Sahner (see website: https://www.uniklinik-freiburg.de/nc/presse/pressemitteilungen/detailansicht/presse/317.html).

"Pressefoto" means image for journalism. The usage of the file is explicitly permitted.

How to state this correctly?

If you please could help me as fast as possible - I feel ashamed for not having understood the licensing...

Best regards, Schmidan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schmidan (talk • contribs) 14:47, August 12, 2016 (UTC)

@Schmidan: it's quite OK. We don't expect our new users to get everything right the first time, especially with something as complex as copyrights.
In this case, it doesn't look like the ‎university explicitly provided a license for that image, so it probably isn't yet suitable for Commons. However, many organizations are OK with licensing their press photos as free; we just have to ask them politely. I see a contact email: kommunikation@uniklinik-freiburg.de. Could you please follow the instructions at Commons:E-Mail-Vorlagen? Let me know if you get a positive response. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:49, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

File:Sam Lord's Castle Barbadoes 1949. by Ted Hill.jpg.

Thank you for contacting me about this old photo. You say I need to provide more information about it but I am not clear exactly what extra information is needed. I have expanded the note I had written under "Licensing" so that it now reads: "I, John Hill, am the eldest son of Dr. A. E. (Ted) Hill and inherited his photos after his death in 2004 and so I am now the copyright holder for this photo. I hereby release the photo under GNU Free Documentation License. John E. Hill (talk) 08:39, 28 August 2016 (UTC)" Is this enough? If not, please tell me clearly what else I need to do. Apologies for the nuisance. Thanks so much for your help. Sincerely, John E. Hill (talk) 08:39, 28 August 2016 (UTC)

@John Hill: every file should have a license template on its description page. You can see this in the top paragraph of Commons:Licensing where it says, "The license that applies to an image or media file must be indicated clearly on the file description page using a copyright tag."
So in this case, you could add a copyright tag like this:
{{GFDL-self|migration=not-eligible}}
We definitely prefer a dual cc license nowadays, so this would be even better:
{{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-4.0}}

FAQ? -- Geagea (talk) 23:46, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Sorry Magog. Don't see the point. The source is ok but still the file deleted. -- Geagea (talk) 00:19, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
"Transferred from en.wikipedia" is not a source. Again, I explained this in the FAQ. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:27, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
But the original upload log contain the details about the source. Probably an old transfer tool moved it that way without the source detail in the correct place. That might be happen in more then this file. "Transferred from en.wikipedia" is a source if more detail might be in the upload log. -- Geagea (talk) 04:35, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
That's the other bot's problem. My bot removed nothing about the actual source. It removed only irrelevant details. If you have an issue with the no source tagging and subsequent deletion, which have literally nothing to do with the edit my bot made a year beforehand, please talk to User:Jcb. images of Queen Philippa of Hainault and her family

Hi Magog- Did you (or your bot?) happen to notice any issues with the other images uploaded by Historynerd99 on Sept 3? See my post here for more info: en:User_talk:DrKay#cross-wiki_sockpuppetry.3F. Thanks in advance for taking a look. --Eric my en.wp talk page 17:37, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

@EricM: what are you asking about?
If it is the images, you can tag any images with a poor source with {{subst:nsd}} (manually), just like on English Wikipedia. You can also click the link on the left which says "no source." If you want to do that in batch, you can install VisualFileChange.js.
If you are asking about sockpuppetry, can you give more information? FYI, you will usually get faster results for that by filing at COM:RFCU. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:06, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
On second thought, it doesn't strike me as malicious sockpuppetry if the user failed to register at English Wikipedia (w:WP:LOGOUT). The only way it would rise to malicious on English Wikipedia would be if the user edit warred across multiple IPs. I would decline that request unless you could link it to an existing user. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:11, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi Magog- Thanks for the info, and for your posts on the user's talkpage. I wasn't sure if the behavior would be considered sockpuppetry or not, but erred on the side of thinking it might be now that we have unified logins. I was pretty sure you would know right away how to proceed, whereas it would take me a while to do so. Thanks for the help! --Eric my en.wp talk page 21:43, 4 September 2016 (UTC)

New Uploads

The original photo is actually from our town website, you may check it out in adoormunicipality.in This is the original location of these photos, and I am uploading them again. Regards (Saatvik.Jacob (talk) 09:02, 1 September 2016 (UTC))

@Saatvik.Jacob: OK, you got me, I was definitely not expecting that. Could you kindly explain why the those photographs are distributed among two Flickr accounts and a Youtube upload? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:17, 2 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi @Magog the Ogre, the photos you mentioned you saw in YouTube & Flickr's both belongs to the municipal worker's of Adoor, I am sure, but as you are not convinced I myself could take photos of: Adoor Central Junction, Adoor K.S.R.T.C Stand & Adoor MC Road (SH-1), today was a national strike in India so I can't do it today, perhaps tomorrow if I am not busy, and I will show them to you, you may check the internet too, I will provide photos genuinely taken by me, I am waiting for your opinion.
Regards (Saatvik.Jacob (talk) 15:34, 2 September 2016 (UTC) )
What's your opinion you didn't tell me yet @Magog the Ogre, tell me soon please.
Regards ( Saatvik.Jacob (talk) 15:44, 3 September 2016 (UTC) )
Well, something seems a little fishy, honestly. Those photos were uploaded years ago. But I guess if a government municipality is saying they own the work, it's hard for me to disagree with that. I'll just assume you all know what you're doing. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:57, 3 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks @Magog the Ogre, nothing is fishy, don't worry, I am not uploading those photos, yesterday was the temple festival and was a rainy day too, at the Lunch break and in the morning when I was going to work, I took a few photos with my iPhone 6S camera, you may check the internet too, these are genuine photos taken by me.
Regards ( Saatvik.Jacob (talk) 06:40, 4 September 2016 (UTC) )
@Saatvik.Jacob: everything looks good to me. The only thing to note: if you take an image from another website, please attach the following template to the page: {{LicenseReview}}. This will notify trusted reviewers to make sure the site has the required license; then, the copyright will not be in doubt in the future if the site changes. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:22, 4 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice @Magog the Ogre, I will remember it, as I understand WikiMedia is not a place for uploading photos from the internet, we ourselves have to upload photos genuinely taken by us, our MLA has asked us to do so because our town is not too very popular on the internet that's why, to popularize our town we are doing so.
Regards ( Saatvik.Jacob (talk) 14:17, 5 September 2016 (UTC) )

Pissing in my cheerio's

Dear Magog the Ogre,

You asked who pissed in my cheerio’s this morning. The answer is you did. When I nominate a logo for deletion and it is undeleted by an involved admin who already stated his opinion up front after an undeletion request by a blocked user at the English Wikipedia I have every right to be pissed. Our request for undeletion page is located at Commons, not the English Wikipedia.

You asked for a courtesy ping while you didn’t even contacted me after undeleting the logo knowing I used it is an example at the blocked users talk page to explain the Dutch threshold of originality. There is always a possibility that I am wrong but a note would have been appreciated. Therefor I didn’t feel like granting you a courtesy at that time.

I could always be wrong but I figure you read the discussion at the uploaders talk page and I am very disappointed that you ignored this. Also, Steinsplitter blocked the user for uploading copyright violations, I nominated the logo for deletion as a copyright violation, someone at the English Wikipedia stated some doubts regarding the copyright status off the logo. The deleting admin also believes that the logo is above TOO. Yann closed some of the related DR’s early but not this one. While we don’t know his exact reasoning we should take this into account. This leaves you and the uploader. As far as I see it your outnumbered. Only you and the uploader clearly stated that the file is not a copyright violation while the uploader has a really poor understanding of Dutch copyright law and the Dutch language making it impossible that he actually understood the verdicts I cited. Yet you decided to undelete the logo merely based on your opinion not motivating your closing while you could have reasonably known that it might be a controversial call.

Tell me, is this the kind of behaviour we expect from our admins? I know you acted in good faith but you acted poorly on several occasions. Oh and one of the IP’s you unblocked: it socked again.

Kind regards,

Natuur12 (talk) 12:49, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. You previously deleted this file along with three other similar ones for lack of permission (see User talk:Firemandave#File tagging File:PFD Patch.jpg for reference). All of the file's have been undeleted and tagged with OTRS permission ticket numbers. If that's good enough for Comons then fine with me. I am only asking because, as I posted at Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2016/08#File:PFD Logo Gold.png, the patch in particular was being sold at a number of different places online prior to it being originally uploaded to Commons, so I'm not sure if that has any effect on it being freely licensed. Is it common for a local governmental organization to send in an OTRS permissions email for something such as this? The City of Philidephia, for example, claims "all rights are reserved" and "distribution or republication in any other form or for any other purpose, including any commercial purpose or use, and any modification whatsoever, are strictly prohibited without the prior written permission of the City." regarding the content found on its official website. Police/fire departments tend to be owned/operated by their respective local governments, and the fire department's website says "(c) 2008 City of Philadelphia" and I'm wondering if that means the same "Terms of Use" for the city's official website also extends to the websites of its various departments. So, I'm just curious as to whether that means the en:Philadelphia Fire Department (which is listed as the patch/logo imagery) actually sent in the permission email and agreed to freely license the images. -- Marchjuly (talk) 15:21, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: I don't know if I can respond to the specifics for privacy reasons, but I double checked the OTRS ticket, and it absolutely appears to be valid, even in light of the information you provided above. If you would like a third opinion, you can ask at COM:OTRSN. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:10, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Completely understand the need for privacy and no need for a third opinion. If two OTRS volunteers verify it's OK, then an error seems unlikely. Thank you for checking. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:38, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

@Florian Forestier: when uploading files with permission, please affix the {{OTRS pending}} template to notify administrators that permission is incoming. Otherwise, we think you are just erroneously uploading someone else's work, a situation we see all too often. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:49, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

Bot removal of cross-wiki transfer information

Please take a look at this change by Ogrebot 2 using the 'mass cleanup tool'. Deletion of source information is damaging and is leading to administrators marking files for deletion, such as this public domain image, without making any effort to check the sources. FYI @Mike Peel and Leyo. If this has already been fixed, it would be great if either you would invest the time to housekeep old damaged files, or raise the problem on bots/work requests. -- (talk) 09:01, 12 September 2016 (UTC)

The information removed by the bot was either incorrect or redundant. The insignia was likely created around 1917. Hence, HiB2Bornot2B is not the creator. I amended the information in the file description page. --Leyo 14:05, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
This is handled in FAQ on the bot's userpage. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:13, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: Thanks. I read there that the rationale for deleting cross-wiki upload information is that "information about the original upload isn't relevant: so the bot has removed it". I find that bizarre and unhelpful. At the current time we have administrators being heavily criticised for notifying the wrong person about problems with a lack of sources, and attempts to delete public domain material which could be avoided if the original cross-wiki information was visible.

Can you revisit this please, and consider how the cross-wiki data should stay visible on the page? It is not reasonable to expect someone templating images as lacking sources to review file histories. Thanks -- (talk) 21:18, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

@: I've made my decision. The bot was approved by community process. The vast majority of people have been OK with this bot for years now. A small minority seems to have trouble understanding what the terms "source" and "author" actually mean. "Transferred from en.wikipedia" is not a source unless it was taken by the uploader, and the original uploader is not the author. As far as I am concerned, that is the end of the discussion. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:50, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
Such irrelevant source and author information often leads to incorrect credits by media etc.
What about adding {{unknown|author}} or similar to PD images such as incategory:PD_US_Government incategory:Media_lacking_author_information? --Leyo 07:22, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
That would be more helpful, though I believe it would be helpful to keep the name of the original uploader visible. When they are still active on the projects, at least this gives someone obvious to check if they remember where they got the image from and encourage them to add the source for their own uploads. I'm aware this is somewhere in the history, though not in the file history, it's just unlikely that housekeeping tasks are going to do this, whether manually or automatically. -- (talk) 09:15, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
We have the original upload log for that purpose. --Leyo 19:57, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
OK, I could have phrased my response more optimally (sorry). What Leyo said is correct: we are providing wrong information which is confusing users. And the upload log provides any information about who originally uploaded it, provided no one removed it (which people almost never do, especially if it has information that hasn't been moved into the current infobox). Logo copyvios

Hello Magog,

Apparently some of my recent uploads were deemed to be copyright violations, and I've now got a 'last warning'. I'm somewhat surprised, because I regarded all of them to be too simple to be "original/creative" and thus PD. I followed the rules outlined in Commons:Licensing#Simple design, namely: 'Commons accepts images of text in a general typeface and of simple geometric shapes, even if it happens to be a recent trademarked logo, on the grounds that such an image is not sufficiently creative to attract copyright protection.[1] Such images should be tagged with {{PD-ineligible}} or one of the list of more specific tags for this kind of works (e.g. {{PD-textlogo}} for simple logos).' I did all that. It was never my intention to violate any copyright; I know that too complex media require an OTRS request, which I've carried out for many files in the past. I've contacted people who represent the organisations of these logos, they've granted me permission, but if you want that certified, I'll try to OTRS all of them. This may take some more time though (quite often people don't understand why or how OTRS works, and I just upload the logo if I think it's probably PD). Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:09, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

@Nederlandse Leeuw: please take a look at what constitutes a simple logo and/or typeface at Commons:Threshold of originality. You will notice the standard differs quite a lot between country; you will also notice that the Netherlands has a low threshold.
Most of the logos you uploaded would be considered copyrightable in almost every country, save perhaps Germany, which has the highest threshold. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:12, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

License for file

Dear @Magog the Ogre. This is regarding my recent upload File:सरस्वतीकण्ठाभरणं‌(व्याकरणम्)-भागः-३.pdf. This is work is more than 70 years old and I believe I need to use PD-old-70 licensing tag. However, I was not sure where and how to include this tag. Your guidance in this regard will be helpful. Thanks and Regards, --Shivaram ac (talk) 03:42, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

@Shivaram ac: we don't know the author died 70 years ago for sure though, right? {{PD-old-70}} implies the author died 70 years ago, which we're not sure about. So the work isn't public domain in some countries which treat anonymous works differently. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:51, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

@Hekaheka: I have no idea why you're talking about this with me. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:33, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
It's because OgreBot seems to have uploaded the file into Wikimedia Commons [9]. As I'm unfamiliar with Commons, I assumed that you are the author. On the second look, it seems that the author is JNiemenmaa, but he has been inactive since 2009. I would edit the pic myself, but I'm lacking both the skills and tools. I guess I'll bring the issue to the Tea Room of Finnish Wikipedia to see if anyone there picks up the task. Another issue is that once the map has been edited, the erroneous version should be removed from Commons. What's the procedure for that? --Hekaheka (talk) 04:21, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
@Hekaheka: my bot only copied the images from Wikipedia. If you want help with an image, I recommend Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop or any of its Wikipedia equivalents. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:58, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
