CANCELLAZIONE

@Blackcat: could you please describe to this user in Italian why I nominated it for deletion (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Selfie in Black and White.jpg)? I am trying to think of any educational use for the photo, but I cannot at the moment. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 18:39, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
-- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 22:18, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
(For Magog: what follows is the English translation of what I just wrote: Dear Dezatnav, here's Sergio, an Italian-speaking administrator on Commons. The issue is simple: Commons warmly welcomes users' free media, which must adhere to the Project's policies though: said shortly, not necessarily a media can stay here just because it has been released with a legitimate licence. In your case is very hard to find any educational scope to the photograph you just uploaded. Of course another photograph, provided it's in scope, is welcome and we would thank you for that. Hope that I was clear enough. Best regards.

Zambia has FOP

Doubting the unsourced wording of COM:FOP#Zambia, I looked up the law, and it's quite clear that Zambia does have FOP. I suggest you withdraw your deletion request for my image, along with any others you may have pending, and file undeletion requests for all Zambian images you have mistakenly caused to be deleted. Jpatokal (talk) 23:21, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

@Jpatokal: let's wait for the DR to finish out. You might consider adding a note to Commons talk:Freedom of panorama to see if there is consensus to make a change. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:08, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Please do not leave!

Hi Magog the Ogre, I regret to see you leaving and hope very much that you change your mind. Apparently you were quite upset about a thread at COM:AN/U. Such things happen. And perhaps, in a moment of rage, we do things we shouldn't have done. In this regard, I ask you to unblock Fastily. Best, AFBorchert (talk) 07:25, 19 May 2015 (UTC)

+1 I know Commons is sometimes (often?) anarchy, but we must improve it not leave it!? I mean you are fully right in your reasons and I would say thanks to all you doing on Commons. Best wishesUser: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  08:27, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Magog, thank you for standing up against Fastily but please come back. I hate to see you leave. Perhaps you have some time to drop by at IRC later this day? Natuur12 (talk) 10:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Magog, please reconsider. I know that the current discussions at COM:AN/U are a bit heated, but instead of leaving, try to cool down a bit and then return to Commons. Most discussions on Commons are more pleasant than these recent ones. --Stefan4 (talk) 13:42, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Like the above, I hope you do return quickly after a wikibreak; it would be very sad if this was permanent. Green Giant (talk) 15:03, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Please don’t leave. In spite of the trolls you rightly mention, people like you are necessary to keep them in check and to curb their prenicious influence in the project, at all levels. And I’m sure you feel that the project is worth a few annoyances — for a greater good, and for its own (so many) pleasant aspects. Please reconsider, or make this a very short wikibreak. -- Tuválkin 15:34, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Like the above. Please don’t leave. I really appreciate your efforts to make Commons better place. -- Geagea (talk) 05:41, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Can you show me how to run the OgreBot thing for new uploads with users less than 150 edits? I feel like I can't do my job without it and it stopped when you quit. Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:15, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
@Ellin Beltz: I will attempt to run OgreBot while I decide what to do from here on out. As someone pointed out by email, this punishes the innocent for the sins of the guilty, assuming that such a perspective is valid to begin with. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:42, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
Oh thank you so much! All we need is the stocking compartment to realize it's not working and we might as well all give up. If you want to show me how to run it, my offer stands. I write various arcane computer languages, I've just never done one on Wiki projects. I thank you immensely for all you have done and all that you choose to do from here on out. That page is amazing amount of help and you're such a solid administrator. Please know that you're very appreciated no matter what choices you make in future. Cheers!! Ellin Beltz (talk) 00:38, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

@Everyone: Yikes. I'm sorry I acted more like a toddler and diva than an adult with responsibility over the past 24 hours. Nothing else to say or do at this point (IRL anger management???).

I do not plan to talk about any sort of remediation/rights removal/etc. until my block has expired. But if the community/WMF/etc. feels it is important to act beforehand, I will not oppose this; it is warranted. If anyone feels that the self-imposed block is hindering said conversation, please let me know so we can discuss an alternative.

@Ellin Beltz: I will maintain my bots for now. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:38, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

I have to say I can't be bothered with the crap anymore either, I'm just here to occasionally curate railway images. I delete something every few weeks to avoid loss of admin rights. I hope you find what you're looking for on your break. -mattbuck (Talk) 13:59, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

¿Violan los derechos de autor?

Hola, Magog.

Por favor, investiga si todas las imágenes de esta página en Flickr violan los derechos de autor. Para mí sí, porque busqué en Google y aparecieron un montón de fotos similares. --C.Jonel [contact me] 18:29, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

@C.Jonel: Dos cosas: esa cuenta pertenece a Disney/ABC.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:09, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
En resumen, se pueden o no se pueden subir? jejeje -C.Jonel [contact me] 02:16, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

Problems with OgreBot 2's cleanup script

I run into some problems with OgreBot 2's cleanup script. category:Language templates with no text displayed is full of images with broken syntax due to edits like this. This must be due to some recent RegEx changes. Could you look into it and either fix it or disable the tool for time being? Thanks and sorry to interrupt your "personal break". --Jarekt (talk) 14:57, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

@Jarekt: I had never seen that one! I will look into it ASAP. Thanks for the heads up. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:38, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
I fixed all the files in thet category, but there is another one. Please notice that there always is an extra "}}" on the outside of the Information template. --Jarekt (talk) 01:09, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, the code that's handling that part is not well written at all. I haven't touched it in years; I'll take a look ASAP. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:42, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
@Jarekt: I've committed a fix. However, it was complicated, so I'll need to keep an eye on it. Could you do me a favor and keep an eye on it as well? Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:32, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Dear Magog,

I am not sure how to preceed with this request. Is this correct:

If not could you please advice me how to proceed :).

Regards, Natuur12 (talk) 11:36, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

@Natuur12: nope. It would be * :Category:Agricultural chemistry | User:Kopiersperre/Agrochem | DAYS_PER_GALLERY(31) | :Category:Dry toilets | :Category:Milk processing.
Where did you get the compost, fertilizers, etc. from? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:25, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Those are the subcats of Agricultural chemistry. I will apply this change. Thank you. Natuur12 (talk) 15:38, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you both. Next time I will be more patient.--Kopiersperre (talk) 18:28, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi Magog the Ogre. I noticed that your bot added the header twice. --Leyo 21:48, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

@Leyo: thanks! I've fixed it, although it looks like I accidentally triggered the bot in live mode and made a minor mess.[1] Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:29, 1 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I cleaned the file page and the file history. --Leyo 00:05, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject Aviation new uploads

Hi there, it's Scott (Russavia). I noticed that the new aviation files haven't been updated since 3 July 2015. I noticed also this. Is there any way that when such limitations are met that galleries are split into several pages? It might mean having 4 or 5 galleries for those days. Is that possible? Cheers 1.122.32.120 02:13, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

@1.122.32.120, Gyrostat, El Grafo: it is my recommendation that you exclude Category:Kites from the gallery. In the meantime, I'm going to increase the gallery size to 2000 files, as several galleries have hit numbers between 1500-2000 recently, while the problematic ones are usually way above that (e.g., >10,000). Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:43, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi Magog the Ogre, excluding Category:Kites is totally fine with me, as that's not really within the core scope of the project. I haven't found out yet how configuring the bot works – can we do things like that ourselves? A bunch of thanks for still caring about this, hope to see you fully return some day! --El Grafo (talk) 07:34, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
@El Grafo: add the following text to the end of the aviation gallery (the first one) at User:OgreBot/gallery: | :Category:Kites Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:12, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Aaah, there it is. Not being an admin, I can't edit this page, but at least now I know where to put requests → User_talk:OgreBot/gallery#Aviation. Thanks again! --El Grafo (talk) 08:13, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Statistics for mass cleanup tool

Hi Magog. It would be useful to have a statistics appearing at the end of a run, i.e. the number of pages changed of the number processed. I don't know whether or not this is easily feasible. --Leyo 03:18, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

@Leyo: could you tell me what sort of things you're referring to? The bot already has a few pages it hits when it encounters a problem: User:OgreBot/Pages moved to Commons with missing information, User:OgreBot/Pages moved to Commons with missing OTRS templates, User:OgreBot/Pages moved to Commons with possible licensing issues. Admittedly, they're not very well organized. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:47, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
I meant the do_cleanup_multi.php output, where x files found... Loading file information... is shown at the top and Complete! at the end. The statistics (one short sentence) may be added there. --Leyo 07:26, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

@Stefan4: Seems to be a glitch in the template parsing algorithm caused by the ref tag. Will work on it ASAP. Thanks for the note. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:45, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

Two months later

I bought you some time back in May by convincing Fry1989 to back away (at least for the time being). You were probably using these two months to think things over. You have returned to sysop duties (blockings and deletions), so I'm assumung that you came to the conclusion that you should retain your sysop status. I've been thinking it over as well, and I'm not sure that it's appropriate or fair for Fastily to lose his or her sysop rights while you retain yours. Seems like the community is playing favorites instead of playing fair. What are your thoughts? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 01:48, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Actually, I see that Fry1989 has already renewed community discussion about the future of your sysop rights. He or she forgot to leave a message here for you. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 01:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
That is quite within his rights. I expected nothing less. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:07, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
I had assumed that the personal notification when pinging a user-name would be sufficient considering it would be best Magog the Ogre and I maintain minimal personal contact, as I am sure Magog the Ogre did receive a ping. I apologise if any negative intention was inferred in not making an official notification. Fry1989 eh? 03:09, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
I'm not implying that you had malicious intentions. I'm just saying that people posting to this talk page (e.g. me) or watching it wouldn't know about the AN/U discussion merely by looking at this page previously. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 11:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of File:Image thumb8.jpg

Magog, you nominated File:Image thumb8.jpg for deletion, but that page is a redirect. I think you wanted to nominate File:2011 photo of Fidel Urbina.jpg. —RP88 (talk) 01:47, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you. It is a defect in the mass deletion tool that I have already notified Rillke about.[2] I have pinged him again in this statement; if you believe it's a problem, perhaps you could say something yourself. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:10, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately that has been a known bug in VFC for at least a a year. Personally, in order to avoid this bug, I do a quick audit of the images after posting a mass delete. —RP88 (talk) 03:29, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
@RP88: Good idea. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:57, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
I regret the inconvenience. Patches to VFC are welcome; currently my spare time is too limited to allow me updating the script myself. -- Rillke(q?) 10:23, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
@Rillke: where would I go about making the change? Also, is there any way to run the script locally in test mode? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:11, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

What's wrong with this?

Hi, i was looking for some photos, and I saw that you deleted this.

I think this deletion is a mistake. There is a lot of files from Acrofan, and none of them were deleted. See: 1 2 3

Thank you. JewELFish (talk) 22:47, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

@JewELFish: I've restored it. If you upload photographs from there in the future, please use the license template , as it has an OTRS template attached to it which the original upload lacked (thus meaning that anyone looking at the image was unaware that the license was correct). Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 17:01, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

It was not updated for a week. Please take a look. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:12, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

I think will be great to add number of updates in these pages. It will be indirect indicator of how much reviews were performed. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:16, 19 July 2015 (UTC)

@EugeneZelenko: I will try to add that, although not right away. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:22, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre at the picture's down page, there's a message:

cc-by-sa-4.0
Well, that didn't mean I had already said the license and I am a producer or photographer? Any way, this picture I had filled the license right now. Thanks for your asking for that. --Cjackh (talk) 14:10, 8 August 2015 (UTC)
@Cjackh: no, there was not a license when I originally tagged the image. Pinging Jianhui67, I think there might be a language issue here and I'd appreciate a Chinese speaker. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:32, 8 August 2015 (UTC)

User rights

Are you able to change them for me? I have no plans to become active here again, so basically all I need is to be able to use Flickr Upload Bot to help someone at en:WP with various projects, to change a license or template information (as needed to be done recently), and to upload a file that someone leaves half of behind at en:WP. Potential harrassment

Hello, as an administrator I'd like to take this up with you. The User:William S. Saturn is presently engaged in a concerted attack on my contributions to the Commons. He has nominated for deletion every political logo and image I have uploaded, with regard to the 2016 U.S. POTUS election, as well as three generic political mascots, all clearly free-use files. He placed them on the Administrators' noticeboard, in a non-fair use manner, before lashing out against me when I pointed out he didn't notify me of his intentions to delete my files. He has gone after edits in Wikipedia (EN) as well. I don't know what to do, or what can be done, but I find it unprofessional and a personal affront. Thanks. Spartan7W (talk) 22:54, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

@Spartan7W: I don't think he's harassing you. He was correct that you didn't source the latest three images, which is required, both on Commons and as a matter of law. He is absolutely correct that File:Santorum for President 2016.png and File:Right to Rise PAC.png are beyond the threshold of originality and should be uploaded to English Wikipedia as fair use, not Commons as a free image. Most of the others were questionable, but it is not beyond the pale to think that they are above the threshold of originality (i.e., he likely made the nominations in good faith). As for placing the image on administrator noticeboards, he is free to do so, as the license you provided clearly forgoes any copyright claims for third party usage, as long as you are credited as the creator (which you were with the image link). Wow! A found an image purported to be of my father...

Big problem: an image of some guy in a soldier's uniform standing in front of dead bodies in a concentration camp somehow found it's way onto the web through wikicommons. Now, the picture is being used on Holocaust denial sites, Arab sites and this is really offensive to a lot; I mean a lot of people. I am being forced to file a Federal complaint as long as and anywhere this image exists. Please help. I know you are not bad people, but this is indecent communication, at least, and possibly defamatory. @Prc90: you might want to read this: Commons:Categorie. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:09, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

LokomotorasTutorial

I have a question for you about Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/LokomotorasTutorial. Why did you block all of LokomotorasTutorial sockpuppet accounts but not LokomotorasTutorial itself. Did I not put together the Requests for checkuser correctly?--ARTEST4ECHO talk 18:05, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Not that it matters even one bit, but to answer you comment, I got the IP address from User:Taichi as I noted in the checkuser. I opened the checkuser for LokomotorasTutorial after I put a number of LokomotorasTutorial images up for deletion and Taichi mentioned all his sockpuppets (including the IPs) and User:MarcoAurelio suggested someone needed to open a checkuser. I just don't want you to think I pull those IP address out of thin air. Anyway, I await you response to my original question about LokomotorasTutorial not being block.--ARTEST4ECHO talk 18:37, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
@ARTEST4ECHO: I was not entirely sure that the sockpuppetry was intentionally malicious. I was 99% sure. Still, I am a big believer in the "give 'em enough rope" method of handling borderline cases, especially as the user in question almost always avails themselves of said rope. The chances that this guy will return to his original account and edit constructively are quite low, but it's worth a try. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:06, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Updated Copyright Info

Hey there!

Thanks for giving me a heads up on the logo and screenshot. I'm still not sure if the wiki markup I used is correct. Thanks!

Crystal — Preceding unsigned comment added by Crystal7174 (talk • contribs) 13:41, August 20, 2015‎ (UTC)

@Crystal7174: no. On Commons, we do not host material published by other parties unless they formally agree to release most of their copyrights. Making something publicly available is different than allowing other people to use it. This is different from most sites on the internet, and it also different than some Wikipedias, which allow for fair use.
However, in this circumstance, because it is an extremely simple logo made up of plain letters and shapes, we can keep it around.[4] We can only do that with this type of logo. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

@Frutti-mytti: because the author died in 1999, the images are not public domain in the EU or Russia until 2070. You will therefore need to contact the heirs of the author and ask for their permission to release the images under a free license. See Commons:Email templates (English), Commons:E-Mail-Vorlagen (German), Commons:OTRS/ru (Russian).
I realize that is probably a lot more than you were hoping for. But if you are willing to go through with the communication, a lot people are knowledge lovers and are surprisingly willing to give up most of their rights. If you are willing, I will help you through the process, although it may actually involve physical mail.
I also thank you for being honest about the source of these images. Sometimes users are not honest, and Commons therefore hosts material illegally, which causes problems for users. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 20:36, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Please add it to list of valid templates. User:PomologicalBot will upload a lot of images from this source. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:41, 26 August 2015 (UTC)

@EugeneZelenko: ✓ Done. For future reference, if you add a hidden category that starts with PD- or PD[space], then the bot will automatically recognize it as licensed. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:12, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

"Unless someone asks me otherwise"

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Administrators%27_noticeboard/User_problems&diff=166847109&oldid=166841561

I asking you, but since you have doubts of some sort, I'm asking in the context of a friendly talk page discussion. Look at the following:

How does this community reconcile the fact the same bureaucrat who advocated desysopping INeverCry is adamantly defending Russavia at every opportunity? Russavia made INeverCry miserable at every opportunity, yet Odder never advocates any action against Russavia, only against Russavia's opponent. I see favoritism in this community, even in its highest echelons in the form of bureaucrat Odder.

Can you also not see how favoritism was created for you? You took a more more popular approach to sysopship than Fastily did. You became a prolific bot operator, while Fasily became a prolific deleter. People saw you as helping their uploaded files, while people saw Fasily as destroying their work. This made you a community favorite and Fasily a menace in the community's eyes. I believe that your popularity and Fasily's unpopularity had much to do with the outcome of the dispute between Fasily and you. A vote under these circumstances would always swing towards popularity contest rather than justice. Do you believe otherwise? --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 18:13, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

I will respond to this, but it will take me a bit to form a fully competent answer. I will give you the TL;DR beforehand:
  • Yes, I do believe the community shows favoritism, as do many communities. I don't like it either.
  • Fastily had a lot of complaints. Some were unfair ("he deleted my photo", "oh c'mon, stop being such a square with this precautionary principle nonsense!"). However, others were quite fair and accurate. It's worthwhile to note that he was entirely unrepentant and unwilling to change his future behavior, as expounded by his final statement. Anyway, because you asked, I will soon provide a list of concrete examples, rather than just accusations.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:18, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
@Michaeldsuarez: First off, I'm sorry about the belated response. I've procrastinated, which was rude of me.
Second off, I have to be completely honest. Yes, I do see how there might be favoritism. What would you propose that I or the community do at this situation? I am open to suggestions.
Third off, regarding Fastily: I don't like it very much either when people get upset that their images are being deleted when they should be deleted. And yes, some of that caused Fastily to be unfairly disliked. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:19, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry about it. I got over it. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 23:19, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello, dear 'Magog the Ogre': I'm sorry this means trouble to you as for being an 'ogre' you certainly would want to avoid issues like this. If someone wants to delete my file then please only for giving a substantiated evidence-based reason, please. There has been some serious 'trial fixing' going on in Sarajevo just after the Archduke's + Queen of Bohemia's assassination on 28 June 1914. His shirt that been slashed with blood stains around the center does and lack of bloodstains to his collar nor shoulder regions does NOT MATCH the diagnosis 'bullet wound to the neck'. This comes from me - a medically and forensically trained professional (please request my real details confidentially and you may look me up on European medical register.) Online there is a 'death certificate' on the Oesterreichisches Staatsarchiv issued one month AFTER funeral by the local Parish in Vienna. That cannot be right, as no 'Dr of theology' may issue a death certificate. The issuing of death certificates lies SOLELY in the hands of medical doctors, that are trained to certify death and its correct diagnosis. We have nothing of that sort available by the local medics in 1914 based in Sarajevo who must have taken medical care of both, Archduke's and Queen's treatment. Plus the trial itself in Sarajevo includes flogging of several members of the 'Black Hand', which was against Austrian law at that time (Empress Maria Theresa's 'Constitutio Criminalis Theresiana, 1768) - meaning: there had NOT been a fair trial. Nor had been other witnesses been heard, aport from Count von Harrach's written statement, not translated by a professional - no other witness, not from the 6-car convoy nor from the locals - this looks to me like a serious trail fixing. Also the clothes of the Duchess are missing, including here jewellery. There is a lot of more evidence that the dealings with the assassination were utterly 'wrong' - so it is a matter of world-wide public interest to conclude 100 years on by whom. Charles I's 'coronotion' being the offspring of a 'morganatic' marriage and 'Zita's von Bourbon-Parma' being the offspring of a 'morganatic marriage' and then the ensuing aftermath of the wrong lineage of 'Habsburg' in line for the throne - Charles' coronation shows exactly who was pulling the strings for him being a 'puppet monarch'. This is of PUBLIC INTEREST - this needs to be given a re-trial. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DougieLionheart (talk • contribs) 18:24, August 31, 2015‎ (UTC)

@DougieLionheart: I think that you may have brought up an interesting point. However, I don't think that Wikimedia Commons is really the right place to publish this. See Commons:Scope#PDF and DjVu formats. You probably would be better off publishing in an academic setting. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:06, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
Thank you for uploading "File: Letter about Rear Admiral Richard R. McNulty" to wiki commons. I replaced my original description of the letter in the Wikipedia article United States Merchant Marine Academy, where the letter appears, with the much improved description of the letter that you provided when you uploaded it to commons. Much thanks. Albiet (talk) 01:36, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Image "time capsules"/undelete in some future year

Hello Magog the Ogre. We have recently come into contact regarding one image from North Korea. Thank you for your insights. I would like to seek your advice on a more general topic. I have long been frustrated that I may be aware of valuable images and other media that I can't upload now because they are under copyright, but decades from now when they become part of the PD, then nobody may think to upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Now we are more aware of our contemporary popular culture, and decades from now many of the works worthy of being in Wikimedia may fall into oblivion. That is why it caught my attention that you included a tag to one image "Category:Undelete in 2019", which seems to be some sort of solution to the problem I was outlining.

I have tried to look for information about it, but not much seems to be out there. I just found a person sharing the same interest in this page. The advice posted there by some other user was to:

Is that the best way to go about uploading media for the benefit of future generations?

I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice on policies and best practices on this. Thank you. (talk) Al83tito 13:08, 01 Sep 2015 (UTC)

@Al83tito: Commons doesn't have any such system at the moment. It is an interesting idea, but one I think you'd probably need to coordinate with the Wikimedia Foundation. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:37, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

need help

Hello,

I uploaded this material https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Angela_Craciun,_Pr%C3%A9sidente_de_la_Fondation_Andr%C3%A9_Malraux_avec_Florence_Malraux,_fille_d%27Andr%C3%A9_Malraux.jpg, but when I google it, I cannot find it. Another user suggested that maybe you know why this is happening and maybe you can help. I asked it on Village pump also, but I got only one answer and when I search the article by the same key words that user suggested, I still cannot find it. Not even on the third page, although the user that responded me on Village pump said he sees it as the fifth result.

I hope you can give me a helping hand. Thank you. --Fondation André Malraux (talk) 15:49, 7 September 2015 (UTC)

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum@wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

PD ineligible?

I noticed a few of my uploads being (I assume automatically) added to the PD ineligible page. What exactly does this mean? Is it simply a list of uploads you or some other experienced Wikimedian (please tell me that's a word) wants to check up on? Maplestrip (talk) 12:20, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

@Maplestrip: it means that you or another user added a template which adds the file to Category:PD ineligible. For example, PD-textlogo. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:58, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
Oh, haha. I was worried because I thought the title meant "public domain ineligible," as in ineligible to put into the public domain. Thanks for the reply :) Maplestrip (talk) 05:38, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

red highlight area on wikimedia map does not match description on wikipedia page

Hello, Page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sursum_Corda,_Washington,_D.C. describes the geographic boundaries of Sursum Corda, while the red highlight area on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Map_sursum_corda.jpg does not match. If the wikipedia boundary explanation is correct then the red highlight area needs expanded to the west to touch New Jersey Avenue. If the existing red highlight area which is bounded on the west by 1st st NW is correct, then the wikipedia boundary explanation is incorrect. Thank you for your attention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jezebelithaca (talk • contribs) 02:43, September 22, 2015‎ (UTC)

Hi, please be so kind as to explain the nature of the machine readable license you added to this linked image. Is there somewhere where I can read it? Saffron Blaze (talk) 23:29, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

@Saffron Blaze: there are bots which try to determine which files do not have a license. This is important because unlicensed files should be deleted. See Category:Files with no machine-readable license and also User:OgreBot/Notable uploads/2015 September 20. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:34, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, that was helpful. Does the template tell anything about the license itself? I noted the code mentioned "attribution". Saffron Blaze (talk) 04:06, 21 September 2015 (UTC)
@Saffron Blaze: the files you've uploaded are automatically added to the hidden category Attribution. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:50, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
I read the description of the category and it speaks of only one restriction, whereas the license I applied actually references several restrictions and/or expectations. Could it not be misconstrued that this is either dual licensed or indeed only has the one restriction? Saffron Blaze (talk) 16:41, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
@Saffron Blaze: maybe you could create your own like Category:Copyrighted by Saffron Blaze? Or maybe just pickup on Category:Copyrighted free use provided that? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:34, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Template:PD-NYCGov

I have commented on the closure of the Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PD-NYCGov at User talk:Yann#Opinions are not facts. You may be interested. Secondarywaltz (talk) 13:59, 23 September 2015 (UTC)

@Secondarywaltz: I disagreed with Yann and I told him that (see Special:PermanentLink/173035277#Template:PD-NYCGov). He said I needed to mark all the images, which I did (although I forgot to include them on the page, which was definitely my fault). He told me that DR was the wrong venue, which is wrong in my opinion (neither of the two of the three people in favor of keep who asked me to bring it to VP did so themselves). I plan to renominate and post a note linking to the DR at COM:VPC, which I feel is a fair solution to all. But feel free to do so yourself first. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:04, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
The reason I am posting here is because I do not know the process required - and it is so obviously incorrect. Thanks. Secondarywaltz (talk) 00:08, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
