User talk:Lycaon/Archive2

From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries) or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 21:58, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

QI discussion

There is an important discussion going on here which might result in a snowball with unwanted results. Although I agree that the actual QI guidelines should be tuned up, I can't support a considerable degrading of the existing criteria, towards some "poor man's QI" model. - Alvesgaspar 14:45, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

  •  Comment e.g. I see the chain twice, but the guy only once. that is not possible... ;-) Lycaon 12:53, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
  •  Info You got tricked by the perspective, if you are talking about the two feet I removed in the lower left, this is a 3rd person, which doesn't appear in the upper right reflections! It was a friend of mine standing near by. The guy you see in the upper right part next to the chain was pretty far away. Round-shapes reflect things in a very strange way, you should try this next time you see a motorcycle of this type. --Atoma 01:13, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Reflections still look real after the digital processing, hope you didn't oppose for the reason you mentioned ( Oppose fake reflections Lycaon 09:54, 20 January 2007 (UTC))

Polychaeta

I'm trying to translate your great svg scheme of general organisation of polychaeta : Image:Polychaeta_anatomy_nl.svg. But I think there is a problem: for me, the nerve (ventrale zenuw) is more ventral than the blood vessel (ventraal bloedvat). But it's just what I remember from my dissections... POTY archief

-- Bryan (talk to me) 21:20, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

General layout of a malacostracan

I have taken the great liberty of uploading a slightly modified version of Image:General malacostracan en.svg in place of your original. The changes were entirely cosmetic and I don't think I have disrupted any labels. I made the thorax and head slightly rounded and changed the antennula slightly. I also made the transparent part a little less transparent so that the background does not show through the head. I hope you approve :-) --Tony

Erik the Dead

In passing I notice you had the pleasure of the vandal's company. I had the same on Wikibooks (& we use cascading protection on their favourite pages now). No idea if you use Checkuser on Species but on books it was the third vandal account on the same IP and a vandal on the same IP was on Meta that day too. If you want more info let me know - regards --Herby talk thyme 12:31, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Given that shumate was not registered on that website[2] until 10 Jan 07[3] (and hence hadn't created a portfolio there until then), and those images were uploaded here in 18 Nov 06 do you agree that that website could not be the source of those images and therefore there is no evidence of copyright-violation, and no reason to dispute the license ? --Tony Wills 13:44, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

QICbot stealing images :-)

I think QICbot stole your image because of this edit [4] which accidently removed the space between 2007 and (UTC), I expect the bot probably parsed "2007(UTC)" as year 0 and thought it was 2007 years old :-), I'll go and put a space back in :-) --Tony Wills 12:33, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

The Hooverfly on jeans

what do you think about Eupeodes corollae ? --Makro Freak 19:02, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

That ****ard has been around too much lately - I'll get CU later - assume he hit Wikispecies? I have an IP you may wish to block from last time? --Herby talk thyme 07:17, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

would be great, thanks! (at least uploading images to wikispecies has been blocked) Lycaon 07:19, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Firstly I had already protected one of those against recreation so is it working on Species? I know there was a bug a while ago but I thought it was sorted. As to blocks you could take a look at [5] - they are recent ones I've worked on - one I'm sure is the bottle guy tho I will check. I am trying to get some work on cross wiki anti vandal action by sharing stuff like this - would you be part of it (probably Meta based)? Using info from Wikipedia blocks, blacklists, CU data etc --Herby talk thyme 07:39, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Blocked & sp'd your user page, Ok? --Herby talk thyme 07:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
thanks Lycaon 07:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
Fine - let me know about the block suggestions will you & the cross wiki vandal action idea? I'm sort of hoping for people from all the smaller projects to work together (not really referring to Commons but Wikibooks which is still my "home"!) --Herby talk thyme 08:03, 21 May 2007 (UTC)
No problem at all - have a really great time, sounds wonderful. There is a message on your talk page on Meta about it anyway and I'll catch up with you when you are back (I'm in the Italian hills for a week over that time). Regards --Herby talk thyme 09:37, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I understand your problem. Though, replacing the file on Commons will change it everywhere except where you want it to be changed, that is the main logo in the top left corner of every page of wikispecies (if I have understood your request correctly). Enabling local upload will take time (you'll have to bug the developers, wait for their answer, etc.). So the best advice I can give is: upload your temporary aniversary logo on Commons, add a message in your local site notice (wikispecies:MediaWiki:Sitenotice) announcing this anniversary and linking to a page where you will write a little text and display your modified logo. guillom 12:31, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Category:Commons photographers

Hi, what's the go with this category, do you add yourself or get someone to evaluate you? It also seems to vague, wouldn't it be usefull to have more specific categorys, eg, the countries you photograph in and your preferred subjects. I think it would make it easier to request an image of another user if you you could just look up category:Australian nature PH or something. --Benjamint444 09:34, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Image:Hoverfly12.jpg

Thanks again, Hans. The nicest thing about this place is what we learn, both with our and other nominations. And not only about Photography. When I came here a year ago, I hadn't the slightest idea what a hoverfly was (for me they were all biting ox-flies...) and that there were hundreds of species of marigolds. Now, I'm thinking seriously of buying a good botanic catalogue... That's why I believe it is just nonsense the idea that COM:FPC is a waste of time. Alvesgaspar 10:50, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Categories on images

Hi Lycaon - saw your comment here "It doesn't need a category when it is on the species page" - can you confirm this is now the case? I've been lambasted a couple of times (see my talk page!) for removing categories from images so they are not cluttering up genus categories and/or splitting images between a species page and a species cat (see here). If images indexed on species pages 'officially' now no longer require a category, I'd like to remove the cats again to tidy things up. What is the current dogma? Thanks - MPF 11:30, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
