Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Ciao, premetto che io sono sempre a caccia di immagini di chiese ed oratori (sono la mia passione, se non addirittura una mania, commonara). Dunque, in Commons non esistono moltissime sfumature di policy ma una in particolare prevede che le categorie non siano composte da una sola immagine (anche se io credo sia un'estensione dell'affermazione, più corretta e logica, che una galleria non debba contenere una sola immagine), tuttavia non si fa alcuna menzione sulla quantità di categorie possano essere abbinate ad un'immagine.

Condivido ora una riflessione: cos'è Commons? UN progetto che riunisce contenuti multimediali a licenza libera. OK, quindi dire che Commons è un contenitore di immagini che possono servire sui progetti Wikimedia è riduttivo in quanto un'immagine da me caricata cc-by-sa può essere anche utilizzata senza alcuna violazione sul copyright anche dal sito di un0associazione culturale che si propone di affiancare gli uffici turistici istituzionale nel promuovere la visita di un territorio, o un bollettino parrocchiale che trova già bell e pronta la foto della propria chiesa, o una tesina scolastica, o una brochure di una piccola azienda, o o o o...

Bene, noterai che i possibili fruitori di un'immagine commonara sono potenzialmente molti ma... se qualcuno cercasse non l'altare maggiore della chiesa della beata Vergine Maria di PincoPalla ma un generico altare che abbia come decorazione delle calle? O se a qualcuno invece di cercare un dipinto barocco situato in uno specifico museo cercasse un volto con una parrucca stile veneziano per utilizzarlo come logo del bar che sta per aprire? Se si riesce, nel limite della fantasia e, ovviamente, del buon senso, a dare ad un'immagine più categorie gli si da anche una potenziale maggiore visibilità evitando che si perda nei meandri di una megacategoria di un migliaio di immagini o semplicemente venga trovata solamente se la si cerca per una sola delle sue possibili categorie.

Esempio pratico: io carico una foto di un affresco tardomedioevale che si trova sulle pareti interne di una chiesa che si trova in una frazione di un comune di 3 000 anime... chi si sognerebbe di andare a cercare quella specifica chiesa se non coloro che sanno che questa esiste? Se però unisco una cat "artistica" è più facile che navigando tra le categorie si possa andare a scovarlo anche per caso.

Questa lezione mi è stata confermata da alcuni utenti che da anni collaborano in un più efficace metodo di categorizzazione che possa dare visibilità all'immenso patrimonio culturale italiano, superiore in quantità alla stragrande maggioranza di qualsiasi altra nazione mondiale e vincolato, nella quantità commonara, solo dalle leggi attualmente vigenti in Italia e che ogni tanto stimolano campane di cancellazione per un'interpretazione talebana delle stesse.

Nel merito sono venuto ad inserire e spostare alcune delle tue foto in categorie derivate proprio per aumentarne la visibilità in caso di ricerca, in particolare io utilizzo la categoria di classificazione per territorio "ecclesiastico" in modo diverso da quello laico anche per evitare delle discussioni sull'opportunità di lasciare una categoria doppione. Nel caso delle cat per diocesi forse avrai notato che io inserisco la chiesa indicizzandola per santo patrono e non per luogo, cosa che già fa quella per comune, provincia e regione, un metodo alternativo che mi ha fatto scoprire ad esempio la tendenza statistica di dedicare le chiese ad un santo piuttosto che un altro in particolari zone d'Italia, o perché ci sia un santo più popolare di un altro (San Rocco ad esempio per motivi che oramai sfuggono nell'odierna cultura popolare ma che erano ben noti ai tempi solo dei nostri nonni e bisnonni...).

Porta pazienza del pippone... magari sono cose che condividi, altre che non condividi o altre che scopri solo ora come io lo scoprii in corso d'opera o su suggerimento dei miei mentori. Ed ora vedo di concludere con le risposte (o un tentativo) ai tuoi quesiti:

  • perché gli affreschi (Frescos_in_the_province_of_Cuneo) vanno per provincia e altari e interni per regione (Altars_in_Piedmont e Church_interiors_in_Piedmont)?
Sostanzialmente sono categorie nuove e poco usate (almeno per ora, così che piuttosto che riempirle con pochissime foto si creano categorie di un livello superiore; in effetti io sono un po' borderline ma quando sono convinto che vi siano potenzialmente molte foto di affreschi in una provincia, anche non inseriti in una cat specifica come i "frescos in "comune italiano"", sia più fruibile inserirli in una provincia che in una regione. Non è detto, anzi è auspicabile e in linea con le poche policy commonare, che quando le immagini inserite in church interiors ed altars in Piedmont siano molte la cosa più logica sia categorizzare per un livello territoriale più basso, per provincia appunto.
  • perché ci sono categorie espressamente per città (es. Buildings_in_Piedmont_by_city) e altre no (es. Altars_in_Piedmont)?
anche qui si tratta di categorie più giovani (gli altars) che non quelle per territorio (più logiche e quindi inserite prima per togliere immagini in megacategorie poco fruibili). Poi una riflessione (che vale anche per quanto detto sopra): qual'è il motivo che scpinge un utente a cercare un altare piuttosto che un altro? IMHO stile e santo patrono, eventualmente per artista, quindi farle scivolare in una sottocat per provincia e comune è, sempre IMHO, meno necessario che altre. In un ipotetico tour virtuale a scopo culturale è più probabile vada a cercarmi i frescos per provincia che gli altars, poi essendo inseriti (quelli religiosi) in chiese ed oratori arriverò eventualmente agli altars attraverso la chiesa che li contiene come nelle scatole cinesi.
  • dove non indicato si ordina comunque per città?
diciamo che è la categorizzazione base per territorio e che sarebbe "bizzarro" non dare la possibilità, stavolta ai colleghi wikimediani, di sfruttare magari l'unica immagine per "abbellire" la voce del comune su wp.
  • non sono sovra categorizzazioni le categorie Architecture_of_Italy_by_city e Architecture_in_Piedmont_by_city?
Sì però è una cosa che tempo fa si discusse con uno dei miei mentori, User:DenghiùComm: per un curioso che voglia farsi un tour fotografico per regione avere in quella cat già tutti i comuni gli facilita la cosa mentre se fosse una semplice sottocat si dovrebbe fare un salto in più, così se è vero (com'è vero) che una megacat con tutti gli ottomilaerotti comuni italiani potrebbe apparire poco gestibile (ma solo per immagini sciolte con chisaà quale diavolo ed incomprensibile nomefile) in pratica, per i non wikimediani, risulta più fruibile per andare alla ricerca di un dato comune (che non ci si ricorda dove sia per provincia, al massimo per regione, ma se ci sono tutti lo trovo per ordine alfabetico...). Morale, è una sovracategorizzazione ma se il gioco vale la candela...

Ok, megapippone, scusami ma la sintesi non è tra le mie virtù, spero solo di non averti annoiato anzi di aver condiviso le mie riflessioni per poter avere una mano nelle cat e sottocat italiane: essendo io di Rovigo vedrai le eventuali "sperimentazioni" nelle categorie relative al Veneto per la quantità industriale di immagini dei dintorni dove abito che sto cercando di condividere con il mondo. :-)--Threecharlie (talk) 09:53, 22 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

Strumento immagini[edit]

Ho visto la tua richiesta al bar di wiki. Spero di sentire Alessio il 5 agosto, credo (pensando positivo) che sia un effetto di ultimi update. Sta lavorando molto sulle innovazioni del tool ed era ora che le inserisse. Se mi permetti, ti contatto su wikidata e ti do altri strumenti non proprio equivalenti ma altrettanto utili. Lo sto facendo con decine di utenti per informarli dove andar nelle loro zone e non solo in vacanza a scattare foto, prima o poi l'avrei fatto anche con te. anche io le ritagliavo in locale p.e. con Adobe Photoshop. Solo che con croop tool non devo nemmeno scaricare, è molto meno dispersivo. Se fossero le mie le taglierei ancora prima di caricarli perché comunque si aprono, selezionano, cambiano i contrasti. Ma con le foto di altri che avrei potuto sistemare ogni tanto è una bella scorciatoia.--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:20, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
è proprio questo il punto, per me. Quando carichi foto anche tue, finisce che devi definire nuove categorie, da lì alle volte capiterebbe anche di "manutenere" foto simili. Per anni ho provato a girare intorno questa manutenzione e a ignorarla, è normale. Ora mesi fa ho acquisito il diritto di mover quindi almeno rinominare mi è rapido. e questo tool mi permette di fare qualche altra modifica migliorativa en passant. Non è tanto ma il mostruoso lavoro arretrato di commons ne trarrà un minimo beneficio.--Alexmar983 (talk) 12:28, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
