Translation efforts

Hiya Lar!

Just figured I'd drop you a little link. In between tv shows, I've been doing a little translating of the message templates, and was getting...annoyed...trying to recall which one needed what, so I whipped up User:Kylu/templates real quick to keep track of my efforts. Anyway, if you and anyone else feel like joining me in translating various messages, please feel free.

Oh, I was going to do Arabic also, but it's such a pain to try to wikilink to English links in Arabic script, I'm just going to let someone smarter than me do that. :(

It's just for me to keep track of things, since I'm only putting down the languages I feel okay translating to. I cheat somewhat, since I use automated translation heavily and just tweak the results, though once I'm dealing with wikilinks it gets a bit more difficult, and that's where it takes a bit more knowledge of the language. c.c

Anyway, if you want to put a link to it on the talkpage there, that's fine, or if you don't, that's fine too. If you wouldn't mind, poke Bastique and Shanel too, I bet they'd both be willing to help. I'd say Hoopydink, but I think she mostly knows Gaelic languages, and ... well, to be honest, there's very little use for warning templates in Gaelic on commons, since it's mostly just for people to be able to get an idea across, not actual language-specific content. Wikimedia logo mosaic

I'm not quite 100% sure what you mean. (but I think I do) This mosaic is highly templatised, there may be some bug in how it was generated or the templates implemented. (I have already found more than one in the spreadsheet) Are you referring, to stuff like this for example (at the end of row 3): 29=Cumulus clounds.jpg| 30=Zwijndrecht3.jpg| =Zellengewölbe Albrechtsburg.JPG| rownum=3}} ?? I confess I don't know... but in looking at recent versions of the generating spreadsheet, they are introducing that for no reason I can see (I hvae one too many columns in the cells)... that needs to go away. Privacy and U.S. law

Please note that there is no such U.S. (or state) law that protects private people from having their images published for editorial (or social commentary) purposes. Rklawton 03:45, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

I believe you're incorrect. The image was not taken in a public place, the person is a minor, and you previously stated you had consent. Also I'm not sure that editorial or social commentary apply. ++Lar: t/c 11:34, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Do you usually go around suggesting we delete stuff because you're not sure about something? McDonalds is a public place in that it is open to the public. The minority of the subject is irrelevant except for their inability to form a contract themselves. Given the image's use "editorial" applies as it is within an article. And it's indisputable that childhood obesity is a matter of significant social concern. Rklawton 13:38, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Do you usually get this defensive? I AM pretty sure about this, actually. But if I wasn't, given precedent here at commons, I'd err on the side of caution anyway, not risk taking. McDonalds is NOT a public place, unless you have written permission from them to photograph, you're on shaky legal ground to even be TAKING pics there. But no matter, I've referred this to Brad for his counsel and whatever he says, you and I will have to abide by. Again, I find it terrifically interesting that you asserted you had permission, then changed tack. I hate to burst your bubble but your fair use arguments (editorial, etc) don't apply. I don't like it when people get their facts wrong and don't do their research. It's sloppy and counterproductive to any wiki. You are wrong about McDonalds. See Krages Chapter 2. The place is open to the public, and if they wanted to restrict its use, they'd have to provide fair notice. The image is provided under ShareAlike 2.5, so you are mistaken about that as well. Vandal edits

Thanks for your help. I must confess I don't feel confortable with this, but I believe it is incorrect, and sometimes unfair (like in the present case), to delete entries from a discussion, even if they are our own. Best regards, Alvesgaspar 00:23, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Kylu

Hiya Lar!

Sorry to disappoint, but while perhaps I disagree with Tarawneh's characterizations (She doesn't mention that I do a lot of "sandbox" work in my userspace instead of dumping things into the "live" wiki, same as I do on enwiki) she still has a point that I don't meet the minimum requirements for adminship on Commons. While I'm quite flattered that you nominated me and I got so much community support so quickly, I really feel that I should do the Right Thing and not accept the nomination. If I were an admin, I'd expect others to follow our policies here, so I can't very well be exempt to them myself. Perhaps later I'll be more useful to the community in this role?

Tool2 editcounter use

The localized versions of Tool2 (both on here and enwiki) rely on being loaded into the user monobook.js of the user performing the editcounts and they have to use the loaded version of the tool.

In English: Let's say that both you and I converted Tool2 for frwiki use, I load my version and you load yours. I click on my tool2 link on my page (pointing at Utilisateur:Kylu/tool2.js) and it'll work fine, since I'm using my loaded version. If I went to your page to view your counts, I'd still need to go to my Tool2 page (not yours), since your version isn't loaded into my monobook...

An IP user, sadly, can't use Tool2 at all, since it relies on it being resident in the user js. That's why I provide both T2 and external editcount links when possible. ~Kylu (u|t) 05:09, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

It's doable, if it's put into MediaWiki:Common.js (blank on commons, btw) it'll load for every user on startup. Catch is, having Tool2 loaded that way on a large community site like enwiki is going to be nigh impossible, I think. If you want to do it on ETI, wordforge, or other smaller site that I'm admin/crat/whatever on, though, let me know. I think it may be an interesting exercise to see if a minimal set of "neat functions" (popups, a few counters, I dunno, what else might be nifty?) can be easily packaged up and brought to a non MW hosted wiki and gotten to work. I had tried it a long time ago on BrickWiki but failed. Would that be an interesting thing to work on together? let me know. The problem with that is the most "neat" scripts (I'm glaring at you, popups!) is that they're absolutely bloody huge. Go check the size of user:kylu/popups.js and user:kylu/navpop.css for instance. Okay, so load that into either your monobook or into the site common.js, and it'll link to Interiot's editcounter tool. Obviously it won't work on English Wikipedia (since its database is held elsewhere), but I've included a short howto on porting the tool to Enwiki if anyone cares. Stephen Harper Copyright

Hi, I noticed your comments on the image:OfficialPhoto.jpg. I'm new to these copyright disputes and I would appreciate your feedback. I would like to state upfront that the mess over this image has resulted from two users trying to revert the flagging of the image as a possible copyright violation. I was not the initial person who identified this problem, but a late comer who wanted to see a formal resolution. At this time my dispute is based on the fact that there exists 3 copyright notices for this image, Herman Chung, House of Commons and now the Prime Minister's Office was just discovered today. In a case like this, how do we know who to contact and how do we know we have received a sufficient release from the proper holder? If we subsequently find that the person who released the copyright is still posting the image with a non-free license, do we assume the e-mail permission is false? Your guidance on this issue is greatly appreciated. Alan.ca 05:28, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, with the provisos that 1) this probably would better be discussed on the copyright/license discussion page, 2) I am no copyright expert and not a lawyer, and 3) I am new to Commons adminiship and may not be completely versed in how things are done....

It is my view that in the general case of conflicting assertions of copyright, the safe thing to do (and what I think we do) is to assume the more restrictive (and thus safer) course, assume temporarily that the material isn't licensed, and seek a stronger confirmation of the true state. That holds where both assertions are approximately equal. If we can't get such in a reasonable time, remove the image to be on the safe side (we need to be able to show reasonable care and prudence if we need to legally defend our actions... again IANAL, that's just my thinking). In this particular case, though, the conflicting assertions are not from reasonably equivalent sources. A private party is asserting one thing, and a government is asserting another. (remember, the copyright state that is asserted for the image by the government is present on the page where the image is, as well as in emails that have been sent)... so there is no need for playing it safe. Any reasonable person (again, IANAL) would agree that we acted reasonably in assuming that the government is competent to assert rights and has done so. If we let a private party's assertion stand in the way of a government assertion in as clear a case as this, we could be hamstrung by anyone asserting "I own the satellite that NASA said produced the image they released" no matter how crazy that assertion is. So I see no reason to pursue this further, the rights are clear enough, regardless of any assertions by private parties. Hope that helps. ++Lar: t/c 11:26, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

The Herman Chung copyright notices is on two separate pages of the Government of Canada. Every publically displayed version of this image has a copyright notice, yet ViriiK is asserting that the Prime Minister's Office has released the image into the public domain under a free license. I would like to know what free license they released it under and have the e-mail sent to a commons verification e-mail address vs being posted by some user hell bent on keeping the image. In the mean time, I think the image should be deleted. Keep in mind, due dilligence is not accepting the word of an anonymous user, as we are all anonymous on here. If after some conjolling we are able to resolve the status, it could be re-uploaded at that time. There is a substitution in place for this image and I don't see the compelling benefit of keeping it. Yes. There was a spate of this vandalism a few days back, I don't off hand recall the users doing it (the stuff has all been deleted now) but it got propagated to a large number of new user pages... ask me on IRC sometime maybe, or ask on en-admins. en-admins found it in the first place. ++Lar: t/c 03:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

that was a while ago and I had to refresh my memory... I think it works fine, I did some hacking on it and I use it in a lot of my descriptions, for example Image:Irving Dam Thornapple River DSCN0164.JPG. So I'd say keep using it. IIRC the problem I was having was a math conversion problem but as it turns out if you give DMS as (decimal value for degrees) M(0) S(0) it has the same effect as if you gave D(whole number value for degrees) M(M equivalent to decimal part of degrees) S(S equivalent to decimal part of degrees after taking M out) I think I fixed it that way...
