About this page

This page is a work in process with two objectives

1. To collect all template that are used as messages on user talk pages. This objective is pretty much achieved.
2. To discuss and improve templates that are used or could be used on user talk pages. This includes suggesting new templates but also getting rid off unnecesssary templates, renaming templates, merging or splitting templates etc. As you can see from the red links, there is a lot to do in this field.

Merging some message templates

Hi there,
I'd suggest the following:

• as I wrote on talk pages of {{No tag message}} and {{Please tag images}}: let's merge these two in {{Please tag images}}
• maybe {{Image source}} should be renamed as {{Please source images}}. Are the differences with {{Please tag images}} so great that we need separate templates? I'm not sure.
• is it really necessary to distinguish {{Dont remove delete}} from {{Dont remove speedy}}? I think not, they'd better be merged into {{Dont remove delete}}

1. I agree with the first suggestion.

2. {{Image source}} a) has a bad name (see the talk page) and b) is used specifically with reference to an image that is either lacking source information or a license. I don't think it should be merged to a general "Please tag images" message.

3. I think these two problems deserve separate templates. That's probably because I'm an extremely lazy typist.

No, as {{No source}} is intended to be put directly on images although {{No tag message}} is intended to be put on user talk pages.

I'd really appreciate it if someone who has, even if just a little, eye for beatiful things, could come up with a nice colour scheme und such for different categories of templates. -Samulili 19:34, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

{{Be civil}}

I've added this one, in english (it was a red link in the chart) by basically a straight copy from w:template:civil1 with a little recategorization and removing of the noincluded usage note (since others don't have them but maybe they should??) . I added the multilang stuff (the ../lang subpage) even though I don't have any other langs, just to have it in there for later. Was that a good thing to do? Should {{Be civil final}} be a final warning or a "you have been blocked for..." ?? I did not see another example to crib the level from so wasn't sure. the ++Lar: t/c 01:21, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

also added {{Be civil/de}} and {{Be civil final}} and {{Please describe images}}. Eloquence was kind enough to reedit the {{Be civil/de}} one to make it flow in german better... if I am on the rigth track, I will do some more ++Lar: t/c 03:16, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

attackpage and attackimage templates

dont recreate and provide better quality

I've added these two templates: {{Dont recreate}} and {{Provide better quality}} I did not have explicit en:wp templates to model after (and I bet there are some breathing a sigh of relief now! :) ) so I just made up wording based on my understanding of policy and some IRC discussion with other commons folks. These are the last two templates that were redlinked as of when I checked. Again, comments, corrections, etc would be greatly appreciated. ++Lar: t/c 14:45, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Template:Lang linker

I've another small project in mind, there seem an awful lot of the .../lang navigation templates. I want to see if I can get them to all go away by using #ifeq and magic words for pagenames... we'll see. By having just one, and keying off the existance of lang subpages (.../de and the like) the maintenance when a new lang is added might be a lot simpler. I've generated a quick matrix of the various templates and the languages available for the perusal of anyone interested in doing template translating.

Please be aware that it's written in QuickBasic and, therefore, will get you laughed at if you study it for any length of time. Best to point, guffaw, and move on to something more important if you'd like to continue being respectable. Feel free to phear my leet BASIC skillz. :)

Translations to German - Du or Sie

There is quite a set of German translations of the messages already, but there is one major inconsistency in the translation of you. In German, there are two ways to translate that, namely du, which is colloquial and Sie, which is formal. Also, young people, pretty much everyone younger than 18, are always addressed with du. Both du and Sie are used in messages, sometimes in the same message even. The German Wikipedia, at least all message templates that I could find, use du. I was wondering whether it makes sense to harmonize the messages in that regard. If so, I would prefer using du, but I'd like to have some more input first. I don't think it looks very good on a talk page if different levels of warning messages address the user in a different way. --rimshot^talk 13:20, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Other warnings from en wikipedia

Does anyone object to me copying the major warning templates from en wikipedia? In particular, I'd like the {{test#-n}} templates. Superm401 - Talk 22:59, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I do...if people are just doing simple testing I don't think it's necessary to warn them. Are there any particular users you wish you could use it for? (so we can get an idea of how you would like to use it) cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:52, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, thats overkill. We don't need the multi-layered warnings here like en.wikipedia does: Commons is lower visibility than en.wp so has much lower drive-by vandalism. Second, it is hard to make good faith but bad edits needing reverting. That is because we have so little text in our content pages of course.--Nilfanion 20:54, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

“Other” section seems broken

The “Other” section at the bottom is not expanding/transcluding properly. In a quick look over the wikitext and that of the /templates subpage I didn’t see any obvious anomaly. Could the page be exceeding some kind of template limit?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:31, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. So I suppose that for the time being the only solution is to split the page. Offhand my first thought is to put the block templates on a sub-page, if that would amount to enough ‘relief’ to let the rest of the page work, because most users have no need for them anyway. (A note could be left at the AN to alert any admins that may be in the habit of browsing here for block templates.) I tried to fix it (without noticing that it was already being talked about here).

As indicated in the previous answer the problem in this page is the Post-expand include size (see Expand limits) parameter because it's value (read following this guideline that at the time of replying is 2,094,217) has almost reached the limit (the maximum is 2 MiB or 2,097,152 byte).
