Question

Hi, I have a question about copyrighted images. I am writing an entry about the magazine I work for, because of his historical relevance for Spanish journalism. It´s my own iniciative, but I have asked permission to my chief editor for using copyrighted material, which has been granted to me. How can I use this materials in my entry without violating any rule or being banned?

Again?

Because the autor of the photo sent the e-mail, this is unfair, delete 3 times my pictures want to know that this violation was! You have broken the picture after deleting it. I demand the return of the picture because it is vandalism. I know the photographer and he told me the damn e-mail to the Brazil Commons. Some issues

You seem to be a pretty active admin here, so I will ask you to help me out with a few things. I have nominated some images for deletion but they are lying around for quite a while with no action. That seems normal here while the en wiki seems more active in this aspect.

Anything you can do to get these off my watchlist would be great.

Script suggestion

Hello Julian, I've seen that you've written a script to easily move files. It looks kinda good, though I'd like to make a suggestion. Currently, the summary always is "Performing semi-automated file move request". Sometimes the rename template contains a reason for the move, for example: {{rename|Foo.jpg|Misspelling}} or {{rename|Bar.jpg|eexplanation why the name is wrong}}. I don't know if that's possible, but it would be great if the script could check for the second parameter and if something is given, to change the summary to "Performing semi-automated file move request: Reason goes here". The reason for the move is than more understandable for the people. Also, maybe you want to link the script at the end of the summary like with Twinkle ("using AJAX script") or something like this. --The Evil IP address (talk) 08:45, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the note. I think that's a very good suggestion, actually, but unfortunately I'm not sure how to implement it. The script is mainly written by en:User:Splarka, and I worked with him to make the necessary changes so it would work on Commons. I'll ask him next time I speak to him. Stamp deletion

Excuse me bothering you but you might advise me on this deletion issue in particular. I recently noticed that Kameraad Pjotr, who had deleted File:Stamp Italy 1917airmailC1.png which was undeleted following this undeletion request, also deleted File:Flugpost 1918-1.jpg on the basis of {{PD-old}} being invalid. As this was an image that had been around since 2006 though I did not upload it, I would need to go look at it to see what other copyright claim can be made if {{PD-old}} does not apply.

Please review the last template statement on Commons:Stamps/Public domain templates where this template is stated to be good. Was he correct that the {{PD-old}} copyright template is invalid for this stamp and do you know, or can you see, what other stamps did he delete based on this claim? It may be possible to rescue them all.

I presumed the PD-old template was proper but strictly speaking this stamp File:Flugpost 1918-1.jpg is not Austrian. It was issued in March 1918 by the Austro-Hungarian Empire and not by the state of Austria that was established in December 1918. Either way, I would like to get hold of the image and the details because if it is not free, I may be able to upload it to the en wiki under a fair-use claim. Can you help one way or the other? Copyright question concerning the Little Mermaid statue

I note that you deleted the image of the Little Mermaid statue: Commons:Deletion requests/File:The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen.jpg. There is another image on the English-language Wikipedia -- w:File:Littlemermaid207.jpg -- which warns that it should not be moved to Commons. My question is whether that image can be used in the article on w:The Little Mermaid (statue) even if it can't be used in Commons or on other Wikimedia projects. Well, there are a couple issues here. The image at the English Wikipedia is very different than the one I've deleted at Commons, and en.wiki does sometimes have different standards for files and copyrights. Edit War

There is not an edit war, he is deleting a picture that I own and uploaded appropriately and will not give me an explanation other than he thinks I 'stole it' and will not tell me how to go about proving ownership. I offered to do what is needed and he refuses to tell me what to do. Since he is the deletor of the photo, that is his responsibility or the photo needs to be reinstated. --Jongoblue (talk) 21:27, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

How different does the image have to be before copyright is not infringed? You can see a number of different one on google image [1] Is every image that claims to be a ROCF under copyright? Was it the creator of the image who wrote in to complain about infringement or a psychologist following their ethical guidelines to keep all information pertaining to psychological tests from being available to the general public?

I have discussed this issue with Mike Godwin Wikipedia's lawyer and he states "Mike: i frankly don't think any of the patient drawings is creative enough to qualify as copyrighted. i also think that way about the original figure Sent at 22:56 on Wednesday" Some ROCF could be just a square with a circle inside of it. Weird rational on deletion request

You've recently closed this deletion request, even though there was only one vote, under the rational "In use at multiple projects". Can this really be a reason to close a request?? It seems very strange. It means anybody can create an incorrect or POV-pushing image then put it in multiple articles, and they'll be sure it will never be deleted. I hope you can reconsider your decision and perhaps relist the request so that we can gather more feedback. WikiLaurent (talk) 10:35, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

It's not up to Commons to decide what other projects use as part of their content, except in extreme cases, such as those that infringe upon copyright. (Note that Commons is explicitly not trying to be neutral, so generally POV-pushing images are not inherently problematic.) That there was only one vote isn't an issue, as the main Commons:Deletion requests page explains: "The debates are not votes, and the closing admin will apply copyright law and Commons policy to the best of his or her ability in determining whether the file should be deleted or kept. Any expressed consensus will be taken into account so far as possible, but consensus can never trump copyright law nor can it override Commons Policy." Cwbm may I suggest you leave a link so Juliancolton (and others) can see which file you are talking about? Most admins make a lot of edits so it can be hard to find out what file you mean. First one. You might want to look at this discussion Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2009Oct#Suggested_rename_of_some_COA. I might have forgotten to inform you of this discussion. Sorry if I did. But it seems that Juliancolton forgot to remove your notice after the rename.
Second one. The rename is ok. It was not from 1915 but 1898.

Cwbm: there's no need to be sarcastic; it doesn't help anything. That said, I'm using a semi-automated script to preform the moves, so if the proposed target makes sense and there's no reason to believe it's inaccurate, I'll go ahead and complete the move. If you object to a proposed rename, please remove the tag on the file and start a discussion on the talk page. I check all the files, but I don't examine its page history and the talk pages of all users who edited it. File renames are uncontroversial except in rare circumstances. Rename request

Please rename File:En-Christmas tree.ogg, if this is to be kept. The name implies it is a standard English pronunciation, but it is not, and bots have been adding it to Wiktionary entries as a result. All word pronunciation files on Wiktionary (both English and French) follow a standard naming structure. This should be renamed File:En-it-Christmas tree.ogg, to indicate that it is English spoken by an Italian. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:24, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Judging by the discussion at the deletion request, I don't think that would be appropriate. The overall consensus is that is is pronounced correctly in English, albeit with an Italian accent. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:15, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
But it isn't correct for mainstream English, which is what the current name implies. The stress and tone are incorrect. I can pronounce words correctly while shouting them, giving them a rising tone as for a question, in a robotic voice, etc., but none of these would reflect the standard means of pronouncing the words. In any case, ALL English word sound files should have a country code for the speaker. --EncycloPetey (talk) 03:58, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
Either way, "En-it" would be even less appropriate, as it's obviously not in two different languages. Perhaps you could start a discussion somewhere as to the file's validity, but deletion or renaming isn't necessary. –Juliancolton | Talk 04:35, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
The "it" is a country code, not a language code, and it follows the same construction as File:En-uk-abject.ogg and File:En-us-lobster.ogg. The first code idnetifies the language, but the second code identifies the nationality of the speaker, which is critical for sorting pronunciation files on the Wiktionary projects. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:17, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Most participating contributors agreed that the sources provided were sufficient to allay any possible concerns. I would not have expected you to like this. If you look closer into these discussions you can see that there are basically two contributors that share the same arguments concerning sources on Commons. According to COM:L a valid source must be stated and this is not the case right now. Unfortunately, this frequently stated "Witness report" contains no images. We do not know where they are from. An evidence for these images being in the public domain ist still not adduced. Accordingly I'd like to see a comment of you why these image were kept. Just because those two users happen to agree on the issue doesn't mean their votes should be discounted. Several of the discussions received input from multiple editors, all of whom unanimously agreed that the source provided was adequate. Consensus regarding the situation seemed thorough, so I saw no reason to doubt it and delete those files. Hi - to me the house may well be ok but the sea looks tilted (:)) and that is the one time I'm sure I've got it wrong. It may be that it will make the house look weird tho. Cyclone tracks

I think we should get started on re-categorising: Start with the Atlantic and Category:Atlantic hurricane tracks? I'm thinking if I dump a list of file names somewhere (my user space perhaps) we can do it in a systematic fashion. Catscan is probably the ideal tool here. If you use this Query, you can reformat it and enter into AWB (if you filter it to File: only). Incidentally the AWB run for the Atlantic wasn't ideal, you added the Category:Atlantic hurricane tracks but didn't remove Category:Tropical cyclone tracks (even though the edit summary says replace.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:09, 20 December 2009 (UTC)
Oh yeah damn forgot about that. Best thing then is to add all the new cats and then remove it from the template. I'm going to try and figure out why AWB isn't working for me (It won't runs ok but won't log me in).--Nilfanion (talk)

That leaves Category:North Indian Ocean tropical cyclone tracks and Category:Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone tracks (that's to match the by-season cats on Commons).
