I only placed it in the correct category. It was placed in Liguus, but the genus Liguus comprises a lot of species an subspecies. So I placed it together with the other pictures of this species in the species-category. --Llez (talk) 06:12, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Known bug

Hi Jmabel, in answer at the Commons Help Desk about images not updating, you said that it was a known bug. Any idea how long we have to wait, it's been over a week now since I uploaded a higher res version of File:USGS Balanced Section.png? Thanks, Mikenorton (talk) 23:14, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Hey Jmabel, I'm Ling.Nut from a billion years ago. I saw your sig when I went to the help Desk; I'm happy to see you active. Alas, I have a request. I have no idea who does what on Commons. Hi again ! I am sorry that Ottava upset you, I wrote a note on his talkpage, and I think that if he doesn't change what he said, that you should march yourself over there and poke out your tongue at him thus 8^P and if you get in any trouble, tell them I put you up to it and it was ALL my idea ok? please have a read of the comment I have written there first though. Penyulap 01:35, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
  • Nope, sorry, I'm done talking to Ottava Rima. I don't really care whether he insulted me based because of a refusal to assume good faith on my part, misreading what I said, or what. The point of my remarks was that the change proposed ("active curation" at the level of individual photos) would drive away some good contributors, and I used myself as an example. He chose to read umpteen things into that, and ignored my categorical denials, and even used the AN:U about his conduct to keep insulting me. - Jmabel ! talk 03:19, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, I understand and don't blame you. But I'll keep trying to settle things down, and although you feel bad about it, and rightly so today, I do hope that will fade, I know you can't see the day, but I hope you'll feel different on another day. Everyone has a 'thing' or two about them, and it's not always their fault. I hope later on you can be dismissive of it if nothing else. I best not talk anymore, and let you settle. If you want my help with anything, art, whatever, do let me know. Penyulap 03:56, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Hola

Salud. --Javier ME (talk) 16:36, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

  • Bastante bién. No importa mucho. Creo que yo estaba allí (en la misma Infoshop) en 1996, y no no era obvio que era una okupa. Debe haber sido un okupa para mucho tiempo para mirar tanto como una tienda de libros tan normal (aunque anarquista). - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

File:Walker on portable style of treadmill desk.jpg

This image file was originally tagged as a copyvio from http://drmcbabe.com/product-detail/ on on Mar 17th (likely uploaded by the owner, but has they have never provided evidence through permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). Shortly after being taggeed, someone else changed the tag to a missing permissions tag ... which you then removed today, I am assuming because of the existing tagging in the image file claiming it to be under both the GNU Free Documentation License, and the CC-BY-SA-3.0. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to resolve the original copyvio issue as I can't find anything on the source page explicitly releasing it, so I've retagged it - as the original uploader doesn't appear to have yet emailed the require evidence of it being released. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 16:46, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

It appears it has been deleted again, although the user has since also uploaded it to File:Walker on portable walking - treadmill desk.jpg. OK. Deleter didn't indicate that problem at all in the deletion log. And all it had on it at time of deletion was a "no permissions since" tag and a permissions tag, so I just assumed someone had deleted without looking. - Jmabel ! talk 17:29, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

One more favor?

Hi Jmabel. Thanks for the advice earlier this month regarding pUblic domain for photos from the Missouri House of Representatives website. Could I ask one more small favor? Would you take a peek at how I set up the licensing and description for File:RepNateWalker.JPG and/or File:RepCraigRedmon.JPG to make sure I've done it properly enough? I'd hate to upload more licensed in that manner only to have them deleted later. You said i could use microsoft paint to alter this image. But M paint won't allow me to alter the written text box on the bottom-left. Do you have an alternative? Pass a Method (talk) 09:40, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

  • Paint will let you alter the text box, but you do have to know how to use it pretty well. The easiest approach to do this with Paint is probably to remove the text box & completely rebuild it. It may be that you can build that box more easily in some other application (e.g. Word) and then save a screen shot, crop it, and paste it into paint. Sorry I don't have something more concrete, I have done this sort of thing but not often. - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Actually I thought there were more images of that topic. But then I realized I was wrong. Anyhow I reverted my edits. And about the meta-categories: I insert images in this type of categories because sometimes is convenient. For example here Category:Graffiti by language. I don't know the language of some of this images or I wait to find other images in the same language so, in the meantime, I put them here because I hope someone would recognise it and create a new specific category. You deleted Category:Bridges over the North Sasketchewan River in favour of Category:Bridges over the North Saskatchewan River. Isn't it counter-policy to delete long-standing categories, even if someone figures out they were misnamed? The deleting administrator can have no idea how many external sites link to the category under its old name -- correct? So, since deletion can break links and cause chaos, doesn't policy call for a redirection, not deletion? Geo Swan (talk) 07:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

  • I believe that what you are describing is the policy for individual images (or other media items), but not for categories. There has been a pretty strong consensus on Commons to remove misspelled categories. When I first became an admin, I wasn't doing that, but I found that other admins always came in behind me and did it, and told me I should have, so I started doing it as well. - Jmabel ! talk 15:55, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
    • I agree, some administrators are extremely aggressive about removing empty categories. Some administrators even take the high-handed step of first emptying all the content from categories they don't like, into newly created categories -- and then deleting the original category, because it was then empty.
My personal opinion is that the category feature, as it exists today, is an unsatisfactory tool for contributors to use for organizing pictures, or articles.
  1. It does not keep track of what elements have been in a category, when they were added or when they were deleted. Hence, an administrator can come across an empty category, that had been full of content until recently emptied by a vandal, kook, or simply by someone overly-hasty.
  2. The current category system provides no mechanism for those who add an element to a category, or remove an element from a category, to leave an explanation for their action in a log associated with the category.
There are other serious weaknesses in using categories for organization. Unfortunately, until the wikimedia software is updated with a superior organization feature that supercedes categories, we are going to have to continue using them. However, I suggest it is absolutely essential that we use them in a discipline manner, to keep the chaos to a minimum. The same arguments apply for not deleting categories, but turning them into redirections as for turning redundant images into redirections.
Another factor deleting adminstrators may be overlooking is attribution. Most categories have no content of their own, beyond metadata, like the pointers to the parent categories. But when a category has even a single sentence of explanatory text, I suggest it has passed the bar and its contents is no longer de minimus, and that content should not be cut and paste into a new replacement category. Doing so violates the creative commons license under which that sentence of explanatory text was contributed.
In my opinion, so long as contributors are using categories to organize content, every category should have at least one sentence of explanatory text. We are using our category system like a database, and, in a properly managed database, there is a database schema -- something that says what goes where. We have no schema now -- instead we rely on guesswork.
categories creep when there is no schema
When I went away to University, several decades ago, I joined a food coop near the University. During the fifteen years I lived in that small college town I held several offices in the food coop, including the guy who met the truck from our central distributor. I'd meet the driver, help unload the shipment, and sign off that we received everything on the shipping list, which, for various reasons, could diverge from our invoice. We kept track of our inventory on a rolodex, one card per item. And it was my job to update the card for each item we received, with an entry that included the date, the amount, and the price.
I shared that rolodex with the treasurer and the purchaser, and with every other coop member who wanted to look up a product that seemed to be out of stock. No one person had responsibility for enforcing the organization scheme those cards were organized.
When I first took on the responsibility of meeting the shipments we mainly received dry bulk items, including raw grains of millet, wheat, barley, and the rolodex had a section for "cereals". If one wanted to be high-falutin, those grains were all cereals. The cereals section also included rolled oats. Well, I went away for a while, and when I returned we were carrying bulk, organic, crunchy granola, which had also been shoehorned into the cereals section. I went away a second time, and when I returned, we had had a buyer who had experimented with buying a range of prepackaged boxes of organic equivalents to cheerios and other similar breakfast foods. These shortlived product lines had been shoehorned into the cereals category. Someone who realized this was a mistake had started a new category entitled "breakfast foods", and someone else had started a new category for "grains and nuts", and had moved all the cards for raw grains of millet, wheat, barley and oats out of the cereal category into grains and nuts.
If you are looking for it, we experience the same kind of chaotic reorganizations here -- they are a complete wast of time, and might be at least partially avoidable if every time someone started a category we expected them to leave at least one sentence of explanatory text describing what should be put in the category, and perhaps what should be left out. Geo Swan (talk) 17:32, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
  • I don't really have an opinion on that, and my talk page is probably not the place to try to hammer out a change in policy. When operating in my capacity as an admin rather than just a contributor, I try to work in accord with what appears to be the prevailing policy, whether formal or informal. As I said, earlier I was not making deletions like this, but it became clear that they would happen anyway in my wake, so I decided I might as well do this myself instead of leaving it for someone else to clean up after me. - Jmabel ! talk 19:12, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
  • I accept at face value that the feedback more experienced administrators gave you may have looked like them educating you about a policy, or a policy-like unwritten consensus, based on meaningful, substantive discussion.
If I were an administrator I too would "work in accord with what appears to be the prevailing policy, whether formal or informal". I suggest this is not what we have in the long tradition of administrators deleting empty categories. I am not aware of any passages in policy that recommend deleting empty categories. More importantly, I have not heard of any meaningful, substantive discussions that ever arrived at a well-thought-out conclusion that empty categories should be deleted rather than redirected. I very strongly suspect that if anyone were to make a concerted attempt to track down discussion that reached those conclusion all they would find would be a series of assertions that we should keep deleting empty categories because we have always deleted empty categories in the past.
If I didn't think the practice of deleting empty categories wasn't a wasteful, chaotic, counter-productive practice, I would let sleeping dogs lie, and ignore it.
I think I have offered strong arguments as to why this practice should be deprecated. I think I have meaningfully challenged your suggestion that it is a policy, even if an informal one. I think your options include restoring the deleted category, and changing it to a redirect; doing nothing, waiting for me to initiate a central discussion, staying neutral there; or waiting for a central discussion, and voicing an opinion there. Geo Swan (talk) 19:46, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

The former certainly appears to be higher resolution in terms of number of pixels, but I think the latter is either a better scan of the underlying photo. If you look at them at equal resolution, the latter looks better. Which is to say that the apparent precision of the former exceeds its accuracy. I'd go for the latter (the nara.gov one). - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

  • I think I've always done this with just a screen grab, occasionally stitching together a couple of screen grabs with GIMP. RfC on the scope of file renaming criterion 2

Pursuant to the closing of the RFC "Proposed overhaul of the "Which files should be renamed?" section", a second RfC has been opened at Commons:Requests for comment/File renaming criterion 2 specifically to address the scope of criterion 2, which currently reads "To change from a completely meaningless name to a name that describes what the image displays." Since you participated in the initial discussion, I am notifying you of the follow-up RfC.

Please note that I fully anticipate that the first few days will see a number of additional options proposed, so it may be a good idea to check back periodically on the RfC.

Thank you for your quick answer on the Help Desk. What license can you put on photos you took yourself ? Thank-you, Prune123 (talk) 17:40, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

  • I personally use {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}. Basically, this license means that anyone can reuse your photos (including making derivative works) but they must credit you (if you want to be credited as something other than "Prune123" you'd have to indicate that) and their derivative works must be similarly licensed. - Jmabel ! talk 17:44, 11 October 2014 (UTC)

Adding an "other photo"

Thank you for your help last week with my question at the help desk. I'd like to crop this photo, and then add it to the Akron, Iowa article. While I've added many "new versions" of photos, I'm not quite sure how or where to add an "other version". There doesn't seem to be a link to that. Any help you can give would be appreciated! Magnolia677 (talk) 14:18, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

That's what I don't understand. I did some editing to the TIF file, and now I want to add it as an "other photo". To get the new edited photo onto the Commons server, I need to upload it as a new file. This means adding all the information about it, such as the date and photographer. Essentially, this creates an entirely new photo file. This isn't like adding a "new version", where the new photo gets merged into the existing photo file. But this is what I'm trying to do. I see this done with Library of Congress photos all the time. I'm not sure I explained my concern, but if I'm going to add a new photo, with all new information, why don't I just use that one (which creates two unique photo files, containing identical photo information, but two versions of the same photo, one edited and one raw)? I hope you can figure out my concern. Thanks again. Magnolia677 (talk) 00:03, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Assuming that by "that one" you mean "the 'upload new version' button", once you add it as a "new version" of the photo (rather than a separately loaded "other version"), (1) the old version is no longer accessible for inclusion in articles and (2) there is no way to give any different information in the description (e.g. "cropped by..."). - Jmabel ! talk 01:35, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

My edit to this photo seems to have worked. Thanks for your help. Magnolia677 (talk) 12:51, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

UW Bothell erratic

Hey Joe, I noticed you put up some pictures of UW Bothell campus from 2009. I'm looking for any images of a glacial erratic that was there, where the ballfields are now. I uploaded some pictures today of the remnants (Category:Cascadia College erratic), but am really keen on getting an image of what it looked like before it was jackhammered into pieces. Thought you might have gotten some. I think your trip preceded the construction. -- Brianhe (talk) 00:17, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

  • Nope, sorry, wasn't something I was looking for; I was up there mostly in the context of getting a couple of NRHP-listed buildings. - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
  • By the way, there is a small erratic at NE 82nd & 31st NE in Seattle, sort of a little brother to the Wedgwood Rock half a mile away. I could get you a photo of that, if you like. - Jmabel ! talk 01:42, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Yes please! We can probably add it to Draft:Glacial erratic boulders in King County, Washington. Do you happen to know if it's been talked about in print or online? Any other contributions to the draft are also welcome, of course. We have a parallel one going for Sno County as well. -- Brianhe (talk) 17:07, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
Local Wedgwood historian Valarie Bunn might have mentioned it some time; it's not that big (smaller than a car), so it's not quite into the range where it's likely to have been much written about. - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

- Jmabel ! talk 02:54, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

6x6 again

Thanks for your answer at help desk, but I'm still a bit up in the air. The problem seems to be with the first two, Kyarra and St Ives. When I click on them, I get a blank screen, instead of the large image. What problem did you see with the last two?

  1. File:(1)Kyarra_Hunters_Hill.jpg
  2. File:(1)St_Ives_Hunters_Hill.jpg
  3. File:(1)Vailele_in_Hunters_Hill_(1892).jpg
  4. File:(1)Waiwera_in_Hunters_Hill.jpg

Sardaka (talk) 07:50, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

The first two appear roughly square (1,133 × 1,024 pixels and 1,021 × 1,024 pixels, respectively). They look fine.
File:(1)Vailele_in_Hunters_Hill_(1892).jpg is 1,280 × 859 pixels. If this started out square, then part of it was lost.
Similarly, File:(1)Waiwera_in_Hunters_Hill.jpg is 601 × 1,024 pixels. If this started out square, then part of it was lost.
Have you cleared your cache? If you are getting a blank screen, I can't think of any other reason. - Jmabel ! talk 15:15, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Yes, paying someone to take administrative action would violate the rules.
  • It looks like on my recommendation, User:Denniss decided to close this and delete at an earlier date than the process would normally take.

I noticed that you just edited Category:Bell's theorem. It's my first category. Is there anything I should do now? See also my post at Bell's theorem talk page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guy vandegrift (talk • contribs)

Hi, as an active colleague on upload projects, I thought I'd drop you a personal heads-up for my request for adminship, today being the last day for views. Quong Tuck Company safe

Hi Joe, I didn't notice this safe in the museum; where does it stand there? You wouldn't have a sharper image; the duilian is hardly readable. SebastianHelm (talk) 18:41, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

  • Not currently on display. I took that years ago with a pretty primitive digital camera back when the museum was in its prior location. You will notice on that page, however, that there are two linked shots showing just the duilan in detail. - Jmabel ! talk 22:19, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Request for metadata help

Joe, I realized after uploading that File:Teddy's blue raspberry soda.jpg has location metadata on it that probably should be redacted. Is that relatively straightforward to do? Thanks in advance - Brianhe (talk) 05:32, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Use any standard editing tool to remove that data from the EXIF (on your machine), upload the new version over the old ("Upload new version"), delete the old version (which I can do for you if you don't have the privileges, just let me know). - Jmabel ! talk 14:50, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Joe. Your instructions were helpful; I uploaded a new revision w/o the location metadata. Appreciate your offer to delete the original, could you do that for me now? -- Brian

I need an advice.

Hello, Jmabel!
I want to ask you two questions, if you have time to answer them.
I want to erase some works of my own, some are useless, some have uncertain sources(sources exist, but when i got to primary source, it was a dead end) and are used in community, regardless of this, and it is a bad thing.
If you can give me a code, or a page where i can post them to be erased i would be very happy. There is such page or code?
And if i uploaded versions, can i erase some of them, to to not fill commons with surplus data?
Viuser (talk) 18:08, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Once you've uploaded a photo and granted a license, you can't revoke that (unless these are very recent, accidental uploads). You can, however, nominate them for deletion just like anyone else's photos. There should be a "nominate for deletion" link on every file page. (If you can't find that, there is a procedure explained at Commons:Deletion requests, but it's more complicated than using the button.) When you do so, explain that you were the uploader.
  • Removing files or versions from public display does not save Commons any space: they are permanently on our servers. The only difference is whether they are publicly visible. - Jmabel ! talk 18:59, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok, Jmabel, thank you very muck for your answers and time, i find that in tools section. It will be a good thing to put the button where is Download/Use this file/Email a link.

Hi Jmabel, help me, my Category problem

Hello, Jmabel! Please help me, the Category does not include the uploaded images; Yesterday, almost all my uploaded images were fixed and the Categories included my images after some hours; but now, I have upladed many images, but not even 1 has been put into the categories: Category:Santo Cristo Parish Church (Cupang, Balanga City, Bataan); Category:Cupang North, Cupang Proper, Cupang West and Central, Balanga City, Bataan ; Category:Cataning, Balanga City, Bataan; Category:Poblacion, Balanga City, Bataan; Category:Bagumbayan, Balanga City, Bataan, even if I use this debug in uploading; please help me, thanks and best regards --Judgefloro (talk) --Judgefloro 16:37, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Again: they are in the categories. If you click on the file page for the image, you will see the categories correctly listed. The problem is strictly with the display of the categories, it's some sort of caching issue, and I presume it will be fixed sooner or later. Yes, it's annoying, but only the techs can do anything about it; as an admin, I have no more ability to change this than you do. - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much for your reply and explanation; unlike yesterday night, when the display in the Categories came to have appeared in 2 hours, until almost all of them were there after about 12 hours, when I woke up, but now, tonight, here in Philippines, it seems that my Created Categories never show even 1 image I uploaded, despite all the files display the blue link categories, advance Merry Christmas and best wishes --Judgefloro (talk) --Judgefloro 17:11, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

There are quite a lot of FOP problems on Commons I'm afraid. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 19:00, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Joe. Do you think it's feasible to blur (or grey) the painting here? The image might be relevant for more than one article, as one can see both the building the HQ of Pegas. Thanks--Strainu (talk) 22:20, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Romanian FOP

One night, in 2009, I uploaded several dozen images from Romania, unaware of FOP. Like many contributors I find FOP counter-intuitive.

When one of them was nominated for deletion, and someone tried to explain Romanian FOP to me, I put those images into a list: User:Geo Swan/Romanian buildings. I think some of them don't measure up to the Romanian FOP restrictions, while others are OK. I link to the list every time one of the images is nominated for deletion. Geo Swan (talk) 14:35, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

Quite a few of those (e.g. File:A Bucuresti street scene -c.jpg should be no problem. The emphasis is clearly on Biserica Nașterea Maicii Domnului; the modern building is just inevitable background. I guess is someone had an issue with it, it could be cropped. On the other hand, I hope you won't take offense that File:Bucuresti flats -c -- Victoriei Square, Bucharest, Romania.jpg almost certainly should be deleted.
I guess I'll run through the list at some point and see what I'm pretty sure should be deleted. I'm not really going after, say, 1920s buildings that might be in copyright, just stuff 1950 and later that almost certainly is. Thanks for pointing these out. - Jmabel ! talk 17:37, 8 November 2015 (UTC)
I took a pass through and nominated the ones that looked most problematic to me. I guess we should see how those go. If some of those are deemed OK, then the others should be safe. Some of these are certainly OK: for example, the Filaret bus station is a former train station and goes back to the 19th century. - Jmabel ! talk 18:07, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

VFC?

It would be good if you used COM:VFC for DRs like this one: File:Bucharest Day 4 - AFI Cotroceni (9434231871).jpg -- much faster for you and three times faster for the closing Admin. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 16:36, 12 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Ah. I've never used VFC for DRs, just for making mass changes (e.g. category moves). When you say "DRs like this one" (emphasis mine), what would characterize DRs where VFC is in order rather than the "Nominate for deletion" tool in the left nav? - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
    • Well, use your judgement -- I know that sometimes I'll be working along and I'll nominate one, then two, then three.... of a user's images before I realized that it was going to be more than one, so not those. But, if the user looks hinky, then I'd guess that copying the user name to the clipboard and pasting it into VFC probably takes as long as doing two nominations using the left column -- and that only if you've copied the DR comment to the clipboard so you don't have to type it twice. VFC gives you some of the information you need to add an image to a DR, so sometimes you can just click on the ones you want to DR without loading them, but you can also easily load them from VFC to look more closely. So for me, as soon as realize that the user looks like a problem, I'll go to VFC -- but you'll develop your own rhythm with it.
    • For the closing Admin using DelReqHandler, closing a single image DR takes (A) a click on "Delete (the image)", the an Enter to accept the default closing comment, and then (B) a click on Close Deleted, entry of a comment, and another Enter. Combining two or more with VFC allows you to do part B for the whole batch only once.
    • BTW, although I don't think you close many DRs, if you ever switch to that mode, note that Admins can also use VFC to delete images. That's helpful if the DR has many images -- 50 or more -- from the same user. .     Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 23:27, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
      • Ah, I see, you are assuming these were from a single user or constituted a large part of a single category. They might have been, but I ran across them one-by-one when going through a couple of thousand images in Category:Bucharest. Since they we scattered through there, VFC would not have been at all easy to use (would have had to let all of them load, go through and identify the ones at issue again, instead of just clicking through from the category page as I noticed these in and among other stuff). - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
File:Tina Majkowski 02.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Copyvios post "final warning"

  • The several copyvio corporate logos, mainly. -- Brianhe (talk) 09:33, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
    • Unless I'm mistaken (I looked on the 20th, and so did Denniss) they were all older uploads. The issue is if the user uploads new copyvios, not whether we determine that some additional older uploads were copyvios. Also, uploading something like a logo could be an entirely innocent mistake; the issue was passing off others' work as their own. - Jmabel ! talk 16:39, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

ANU

I saw your Ping on Fae's page but I won't respond there because Fae doesn't wish it. I agree you "included the possibility" of carelessness in your expanded explanation. But it wasn't in your initial comment that accused me of using "apophasis". I gave you, per Hanlon's razor, the benefit of the doubt in assuming you misunderstood the term, and meant something different that didn't require such a huge dollop of bad faith on your part. But your laboured expansion of your usage of that word made it quite clear you believed I was (to quote our favourite encyclopaedia), making a "subversive ad hominem attack". All these terrible crimes you expanded upon in words of absolute confidence, whereas the remote possibility that I was acting in good faith, if insensitively, was left as a questioned and unlikely option. Honestly, if you really still believe I was conducting a nasty homophobic attack on another editor, then I don't see how "knock it off" should rescue me. I don't think such an editor should be shown any tolerance on this project so just press the block button if that's your solid and confident assessment. But I rather hope that you now regret your bad faith comments and naivety in being swept up in Fae's ridiculous accusations. I have apologised for my misjudgement in the matter and that should be the end of it. -- Colin (talk) 19:57, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Regarding my close (that Fae questioned on my talk) I hope you don't mind my squashing that. There could be legitimate complaints about Colin's 'method of argumentation', but I really don't think the particular comment was illustrative of any 'raging homophobia' on his part... it was instead just a particular example of his debating style (which is, itself, IMO questionable, but a conversation about it based on the premise given by Fae was rather obviously not going anywhere useful). Colin rather specifically doesn't use actual 'ad hominem attacks', from what I have seen... he uses a rhetorical method that stays short of that, by stating his 'disappointment', etc... it's basically a method of ad hominem argument, while not actually being an attack. Any complaint about Colin should not be based on a particular comment (as any such block would be short and inherently punitive), but on his general level of discourse, and I would expect to see a 'very' broad consensus before he was blocked, because it would really be more of a 'cultural' thing. If there's any policy, it's one of the most obscure policies around here. See my edit summary here, but aside from Ohio, everything's so fractured that I would demand a link to policy before believing anyone who said that there was such a policy. Weird licensing

Joe, regarding File:USMC-05313.jpg. This looks like a family snapshot but is licensed as PD-DOD, which seems unlikely. The source link given by the uploader doesn't work. The uploader happens to be a bot that I'm not familiar with. Thought you might want to have a look at it. - Brianhe.public (talk) 01:19, 13 December 2015 (UTC)

Yes this image was imported from the given source with a bot. At this moment the image was published under PD-DOD. The source page was changed later, so the original source is no more accessible. If you think that this image is wrong, suggest it for deletion (please refer to this comment), but in the moment of the import all was fine and official published by DoD (and the bot did not check the content of the image). Maybe there are more affected images like this, see Category:Import by User:Slick-o-bot/Marines.mil images --Slick (talk) 08:34, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
