Portal link

Hi Jeff, sorry to be a bit dense, but I’ve looked and can’t work out what a portal link is. I’m wondering if I’m looking in the wrong place, or perhaps my permissions are a bit too low. I recently uploaded three sets of streets and completely messed up the naming - so I was hoping to fix the issue myself without having to go through every image individually! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 14:28, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

@Chris.sherlock2: You are not yet a filemover+, so you can't use it yet. Please read more carefully, and try the RenameLink gadget, or tell me exactly what to change from/to.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:05, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, that was what I had asked before - I can move files, so wasn’t sure if I had that permission or not. I need to move all the files in Category:Dun Road, Austral to the correct spelling. Also, I messed up Category:Winterhead Street, Austral. Furthermore all the wrongly named files in Category:Sixth Avenue, Austral need moving.
Apologies for the error, I usually don’t make these sorts of mistakes - at least I try not to. It would be nice to be able to correct my own errors, how does one apply for filemover+ permissions? Understand if this is not possible, of course.
Thank you for providing the tool, by the way :-) and also any assistance you can give me! FWIW, I’m trying to take extensive photographs of South West Sydney, an area experiencing massive growth and thus change. Also an area overlooked by many Sydney-siders! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 15:29, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chris.sherlock2: You may make rename requests using {{Rename}} or our RenameLink gadget, but you may not actually rename files. Ok, I'll bite. What's the right spelling of Category:Dun Road, Austral? How is Category:Winterhead Street, Austral messed up? What are the right and wrong names of files in Category:Sixth Avenue, Austral? Is it just your files that need renaming? I need specifics, regexes if you have them. I live half a world away.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 01:35, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
It's OK, I have the rights now so I can fix this :-) Thanks anyway. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 04:49, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
P.S. no need to bite, I don't imagine I taste all that nice. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 04:50, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chris.sherlock2: I was biting the vague bait you put above. :) Congrats on the autopatroller right, but it's not filemover.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:00, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
I’m not sure what baiting you are referring to, if it appeared that was what I was doing then I apologise for any confusion I may have caused. I genuinely wasn’t sure what rights I had, I guess it should have been obvious in retrospect but at the time it wasn’t to me. I have FileMover+ rights now. Peace :-) and genuinely, thank you for creating the mass mover tool - it’s really useful and I am really thankful for it! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 19:29, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chris.sherlock2: Congrats on being an autopatroller and filemover now. See Special:ListGroupRights in general and Special:UserRights/Chris.sherlock2 in particular. I did not write this script, I copied it from the work of Legoktm and Perhelion at User:Perhelion/massrename.js and documented it and my uses of it at User:Jeff G./massrename. Sadly, m:User:Perhelion/userstatus.js does not show that you have filemover group membership; hence my confusion above at 11:00, 2 January 2024 (UTC). I wish Perhelion would come back, I miss him.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks :-) what happened to Perhelion? I know how it feels to have someone leave a project, when I discovered SlimVirgin had died on Wikipedia my heart was broken. I hope you are OK. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 12:42, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
@Chris.sherlock2: I don't know. He went on holiday 09:16, 17 October 2019 (UTC). I am OK, thanks.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:59, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Why are you not an admin on commons?

Hi Jeff G., why don't you run for admin? Is there some issue I am not aware of? I believe you'd make it easily.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 00:54, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@Paradise Chronicle There have been previous RfAs. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:35, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

About my Newly Upload File

Hi, Mr. JEFF G., I want to know if the file I used to upload as I undergone a lot through exchanging emails with Wikipedia Commons and the Organization owner of logo and with that being said the organization that I exchange emails with they agreed to used their organization's logo in Wikipedia article the File:Miss Intercontinental logo.jpg and have tickets of wht the Wikipedia Commons volunteer and they said that I will wait what's the next step?? Do I need just to wait to the file to be uploaded here on Wikipedia? Or what?? Thank you and your response are highly appreciated. Take care ❤️ ~Rc ramz. Rc ramz (talk) 14:07, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

@Rc ramz: First of all, please read the first paragraph of en:H:PIC#Linking without displaying; I don't want to have to defang your addition of that file a third time. Secondly, VRT Agents need permission communicated directly from the copyright holder for each file (in this case from MIO); forwards without RFC822 full internet headers are not trustworthy. Thirdly, in the Licensing section, you have "{{self|cc-by-4.0}}", indicating that YOU are the copyright holder; from your posts, I doubt that - "{{cc-by-4.0}}" would be more believable. If you are not the one communicating with a VRT Agent via email, who is, and do you get carbon copies of the messages? Also, this site is "Wikimedia Commons" (with an "m" in the middle of the first name). We serve files for Wikipedias in 326 languages, plus hundreds of other projects. In addition, from a logo design perspective, why do they need all that whitespace around the content (20% horizontally and 35% vertically; in other words, only 52% content)?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:36, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi, the organization send me their pictures logo and yes I have carbon copy of their approval on via email. They said that I have their approval and attached the photos of their logo. Thank you Rc ramz (talk) 15:42, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
@Rc ramz: Thanks. What did the Agent last write?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 17:50, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Off the record

Hello Jeff, wondering if you could help me with this word ...boys beg a stickl of gum... Is that a typo of gum stick? I possitive, I could correct it. Thank you ever so much. Cheers. Lotje (talk) 04:13, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

@Lotje: That is a typo, it should read "stick".   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:41, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

how to handle E-Mail-undeletion-requests of possible blocked sockpuppetry

I received an undeletion-request of File:Portrat_císaře_Františka_I_Štěpán.png per E-Mail and I checked and the PD-old-100-license seems to be valid since the person died in 1765, so I undeleted the image.

However after some thinking and some research, if that was correct, I found a comment of you of another image "{{Vd}} as an upload of A3cb1 while blocked."

We can't distinguish between

  • someone asking me, because they need the image for a Wikipedia-Page (however they did not mention something like that)
  • User:A3cb1 not accepting his block and try to bypass the rules as much as possible

Now I think if someone asks public at Commons:Undeletion_requests or at someones talk-page, that might be okay, but possible spamming so many admins till one agrees might be problematic (Maybe they looked for an unexperienced admin or they just took someone who is from Austria as the picture.).

Therefore I suggest

  • Deleting this image
  • I reply them (per Mail) and link to this discussion here (that they know why such a request per mail has to be rejected)

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

PS:I found it strange that I received it on my E-Mail-Address, which I nearly only use for Wikimedia, however it was not sent via Special:EmailUser/JoKalliauer, and I never received an E-Mail from this address before. (If you google me you can find several E-Mail-addresses [@tuwien.ac.at, @mit.edu, @wikipedia.at, @gmail.com, other gmx.at] but imho not this gmx-Address.) Maybe I just oversee something, not so important how they received my address.

 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 19:42, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@JoKalliauer: Hi, and thanks for writing. Checkusers like Krd and Stewards can distinguish between actions of A3cb1 and actions of innocents, I suggest you consult with him in private, with RFC822 full internet headers. I just alerted him to this discussion via Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/A3cb1 in special:diff/839640339. You may also want to report the source IP Address to the Stewards via m:srg for global lock evasion. Yes, I would lean towards redeletion.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:00, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Flickr review

Hi Jeff. If you have time, are you able to help review this Flickr image: File:Luke Williams in 2022 cropped.jpg? The bot couldn't do it for some reason, and it says a human should do it. Many Thanks. Doogooder (talk) 10:34, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

@Doogooder: ✓ Done. The bot doesn't like crops.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:41, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
Ah, thank you Jeff. Doogooder (talk) 10:52, 9 January 2024 (UTC)

Mass deletion request

Hi Jeff G., Happy New Year! I spotted many, almost the same or controversial, maps about 9th(-11th) century Serbia. While trying to verify their accuracy in the sources it became evident all of them are of suspicious or blatantly unscientific sourcing, scientifically outdated, fringe or fantastic, many of them being derivatives/duplicates/redundant of the same original file/idea (partly also original research and synthesis), some possible copyright violations for the background and so on. Some of them aren't used on any Wikipedia. Ultimately they don't have educational purpose because are misleading (some totally wrong), actually, out of them would keep one file which is directly based on a reliably sourced map (as an example of exaggerated borders, presumably the file could be placed at en:Časlav of Serbia#State borders, but where's already more accurate map). For the topic already exist much better and accurate maps on Commons. Can you tell me whether I've correctly made the mass deletion request? What would be your opinion about it? All the best! Miki Filigranski (talk) 02:28, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

@Miki Filigranski: It appears that you did, people are discussing.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:21, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Could you please review the license of this file? Thanks, Yann (talk) 23:14, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

@Yann: Already done by 1989 23 minutes before you posted in special:diff/840348895.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 23:19, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Descriptions

Hello Jeff, since no corner of commons seems unknown to you , I would like to put the following questions forward to you.

  1. Is there some place where thoughts about description of files is discussed right now?
  2. example. As you will notice from the history, in an effort to get as much information as possible on the description of the file, both George E. Koronaios and myself are trying to figure out what is the best way to proceed. I thought, maybe the layout (like I did, trying to come as close as possible to the original spelling in combination with the description in nowadays English, like George did, would be ideal. Only, how to proceed to have them both on the same page, without having too many information? Or does thee TLDNR does not apply for these kind of edits? Thank you so much for your time Jeff. Lotje (talk) 05:58, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
@Lotje: Evidently, the original text suffers from a common feature of English language documents of the time, the Long s, which was not compensated for in the machine transcription. I prefer what you did (except the newlines, which confuse the diff engine); you could just refer to the Internet Archive version, the Flickr version, or the upload diff for the original.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:12, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Help needed for filing SPI

Hi, I am much more active on the English Wikipedia, where I have filed plenty of SPIs, but it appears that here the way they are started is technically different, so I might have messed up big time when filing Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/TCfanssos, because it has not been transcluded on Commons:Requests for checkuser properly. Could you help me redo the report, because I'm not sure what I have done wrong? Thank you, Aintabli (talk) 18:24, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

@Aintabli: You signed the rfcu box and you left the noinclude at the top. I fixed those in these edits and purged Commons:Requests for checkuser, so now your report shows up. Next time, please make a new section on top with a header like Commons:Requests for checkuser/Inputbox/Header and a body like Commons:Requests for checkuser/Inputbox/Sample above noinclude (if any).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:27, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Help

H @Jeff G.. I hope you are doing well. Since you are a template editor, you might have a better idea: ur-5, and kas-n, when used in the babel box, produce fine results as can be seen from this archive of my userpage. However, when used as User ur-5, and User kas-n, I only get redlinks. Any ideas why this happens? ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:32, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

@TheAafi: Hi, and congratulations on the promotion! If you look at special:prefixindex/template:user ur and special:prefixindex/template:user ks, you will find a lack of the templates you seek, although you may make them (or copy them from other projects). Urdu only goes up to level 4 here (template:user ur seems to be native), and ks has no levels here. It seems that the babel module does not use them per se.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:08, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G., thanks, I was wondering what was making both of these work previously. I will take a look to find what source was the text coming from, or create the templates. ─ The Aafī (talk) 11:26, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Copyright violations

Hello, @Jeff G., I would like to make it clear at this point that I cannot be held responsible for all the copyright infringements committed, because in the cases in question it is always a matter of shortcuts of files that other users had uploaded and were later deleted cause of Copyright violation. You will see this if you look into the summaries of the files and find all the time that it's a link to an uploaded wikimedia file by other users.

iTunes chart

Hello @Jeff G.. I need to cite that a song was first on iTunes top chart but I only have the screenshot. I would like to know how best to upload the image for Wikipedia cite purpose Princeisrael2728 (talk) 10:17, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

@Princeisrael2728: I already answered you at Commons:Help desk#iTunes screenshot upload. iTunes is a primary source, you need a citation to significant coverage in a verifiable reliable secondary source. See en:WP:42.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:24, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

No idea why, but this bot appears to have created Category:Communes Documentation Project (Shatta) with no parent categories. Since as if 05:13, 26 January 2024 (UTC)~ it also has no members, I'm deleting it. Just letting you know in case the creation of a category with no parents indicates a malfunctioning bot. - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Sorry about that. I had a delay between scanning Category:Incomplete deletion requests - missing subpage and prepending of {{subst:Void}} to provide better-than-purge touching, during which the cat was deleted. I will avoid such delays using the AWB setting to skip processing if the page does not exist. Same for Category:Showroom Fundermax, St. Veit an der Glan).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 10:42, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Concerns regarding uploads from a user

I have some concerns regarding some uploads for another user, User:Bigguy637. I've just reached out to them with a message regarding their incorrect use of the 'own work' for author/source, but I'm unsure how to discuss and advise on the use of the correct content license; as they've also been using "self|cc-zero" (Creative Commons 0, with that extra "I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby publish it..." box around it.), which wouldn't be correct as they're all safety symbols, from years old design standards and legal acts.

I also have some concerns that some of their uploads are not-free works and prohibited on the Commons. I've nominated a batch for deletion here Commons:Deletion requests/Portal 2 Safety Signs that I'm very confident on.-- The Navigators (talk) 06:47, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

@The Navigators: Hi. Why are you telling me, rather than posting to an Admin noticeboard like COM:ANU where Admins like Эlcobbola might notice it?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 12:17, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Apologies, thought you were one (I recalled your username from some prior discussions over the years); and thought about going directly to you since you'd spoken with them recently about another policy matter.
I'll take this to the admin noticeboard; you can archive this discussion.
Have a good one. The Navigators (talk) 12:43, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
