Deletion of the post

Hi Jeff,

In your revision "(rv all entries after the end of 31 May UTC)" of May 2021 photo challenges, you have deleted one of my submission:

Ants communicating over coffee plant

. However, this image was submitted on 30th May at 22:43. {{Ashwin Geet Dsa (talk) 22:56, 6 June 2021 (UTC)}}

I was away during Easter holidays. On my return I saw a number of communications from you. I will shortly try to respond to them. Meanwhile, I express my deepest and sincerest apologies if I have in any way or form wronged and violated Wikipedia policies. I am 88 and not very savvy on technical matters (old dog learning new tricks!). I was being a good Samaritan in trying to help tell the world that Bhupinder Singh Mahal is held in high esteem in his community for community services and writings on ethos of Sikhism. Reː Violaciones de los derechos de autor

Hi Jeff G. Today, I just checked my discussion page and noticed that on April 16, 2021 you left me a message that corresponds to a warning under the heading "Violaciones de los derechos de autor" with the probability of blocking my account. Since March I have not uploaded files to Commons, except for electoral maps and infographics, which in principle are self-made and are elements that do not reach the threshold to prove authorship. And even since last October, excluding these contributions, I have not uploaded other files to Commons. If you are referring to an open case of September 17, 2020, it was strange that a message of this type reached me when it is not yet fully proven whether they reach the authorship threshold or not, since I still know is under discussion, so if it is with respect to this situation, a warning of this type would not proceed when it is not yet fully demonstrated (leaving aside your position that you evidently demonstrated in the removal request [1]), and in addition to being a warning more than 7 months apart. If this is not the case, I would ask you for a clarification, that I would be very lost. Thanks! Greetings.--P Cesar Maldonado | Tapuykuna? Quellqayǃ 00:31, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

@P Cesar Maldonado: 01:28, 15 September 2020 (UTC) your files were first subject to discussion in Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by P Cesar Maldonado#Files uploaded by P Cesar Maldonado (talk · contribs) and deleted, and then 20:29, 16 September 2020 (UTC) your conduct in that section was subject to a discussion now archived at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems/Archive 88#Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by P Cesar Maldonado. I warned you not to upload copyright violations in this edit 23:19, 16 September 2020 (UTC). Discussion continues at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by P Cesar Maldonado#Files uploaded by P Cesar Maldonado (talk · contribs) 2. 22:32, 22 October 2020‎ (UTC), 6d13m later, you uploaded File:Mapa Electoral de Bolivia por municipios 2020.svg, and only revealed the source in this edit 15:53, 23 October 2020 (UTC), 17h21m later, after a post on your user talk page. That is unacceptable.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:15, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Dear Jeff G. I understand where you are going with the explanation you just gave me. I cannot contradict the cases already closed like the one of September 16, 2020. First of all, I would perfectly understand the warning you put on my discussion page on April 16 if the case of September 17, 2020 would already be closed definitively, Not for now, because it is still open and there is no definitive solution because the opinions are different and diverse, from objective and subjective views. But it is not correct or acceptable to warn me to block when it is not shown that my contribution is evidently a copyright violation when there are Commons reasons such as others that specify that there are contributions that do not meet the copyright protection threshold because they are simply texts or simple geometric figures. Secondly, although I do not walk with the time available to add the link of the conversation, for which I apologize, but the case of the map of October 23, by the way, I am impressed by the details of the hours you use, but in those 17 hours that you specify, evidently there was a previous conversation with which I left the message and approved the process carried out to justify and withdraw the blocking request. I do not ask you to review those details because it is not your responsibility, but something cannot be assumed subjectively.

I do not come in a fight, I only ask that if a warning is given, as in the real world, it is done responsibly and not moving things forward when they are not yet finished. I have made contributions of all kinds to Commons, several were deleted, others are still valid, others under observation, and I'm sorry, but it is unfortunate that we continue with the thought of seeing only the bad, the errors and not valuing the real contributions and dedication that one puts Commons, and especially when they are original and own works. This is not against you, rest assured, but as I told you, I am not going to oppose or contradict what is written, but what is not yet, please not, and I reiterate, leaving aside your own position expressed in the case of September 17, 2020, which sadly was due to a tantrum from another user who previously treated me badly and threw hints against me and one requested the deletion of all my recent contributions to Wikipedia, as a form of harassment. To deal with other users you have to be patient, and I remain calm in what I write to you and with anyone I do, but it is not fair to receive the opposite from other users. Thanks and regards!--P Cesar Maldonado | Tapuykuna? Quellqayǃ 01:55, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

AutoWikiBrowser

Hello,

Does AutoWikiBrowser help in categorizing images that are not categorized? I've notice that some editors are able to do many at once, while I have to do them one by one since Cat-a-lot does not work for that. I've looked into AutoWikiBrowser before but never understood its advantages. Krok6kola (talk) 19:26, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

@Krok6kola: AWB was built for working with text on English Wikipedia pages. For me, it has done things VFC and Cat-a-lot couldn't do. It can operate on any type of page, not just categories or files. It can do many things relatively fast in semiautomatic mode (requiring operator approval for every edit) and has much more flexibility in choosing lists of what to work on and manipulating those lists (such as with copy & paste). It can also do things fully automatically in bot mode for approved bots. But, it is just one of the tools on my belt, as: it doesn't show thumbnails; it is nowhere near as fast as Cat-a-lot at adding, changing, or removing categories for lots of pages; it can't automatically nominate files for regular deletion like VFC; it can't automatically do custom tagging and notifying with AjaxDeleteExtraButtons like those I have in User:Jeff G./common.js that inform AjaxQuickDelete; and it requires installation in Windows. JWB has the same limitations and no bot mode, except that doesn't require installation in Windows. See also W:H:AWB.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:58, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for answering. I have Windows 7, so that part wouldn't be a problem, but it does not sound like it would help with anything I do. (Maybe removing the uncategorized template from images already in a category, but probably not.) You sound very technically sophisticated. I guess I am mostly a do-it-by-hand type of editor and do not do all the stuff you do. "Mass renaming", for example, is not something I would want to do, though I see how helpful that is overall. You said before, I think, that you are not on a regular computer (with a mouse) like I am! On Wikipedia I see many editors using AutoWikiBrowser, but all that came into being after I left there years ago. I appreciate all that you do! Krok6kola (talk) 16:24, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
p.s. Probably A.Savin uses something like that to follow me around! Or some type of technical method. Krok6kola (talk) 16:27, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
@Krok6kola: My Windows 7 computer died some years ago. Then my Windows Vista laptop died. Now I am sometimes on my Windows 10 laptop with a trackpad that takes much less space than a mouse's roaming area, and I am sometimes on my iPad 3. That laptop doesn't hit the road except for vacations, while my iPad goes on most trips so I can use it while riding or during downtime around work. I can type faster on that laptop, but it has limited battery life and takes too much room for such trips. It didn't run Huggle until a week and a half ago. I take my phone, too, but it's best contribution to my editing is as a portable hotspot for one of the other two devices (the screen is relatively tiny, but it's filesystem doesn't destroy image metadata and supports more than just jpg files, so I have used it for transfers). Anyone can bookmark Special:Contributions/Krok6kola and check it as often as they wish; what matters is what they do with what they find there.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:34, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
Considering I have 510,593 edits on the Commons in five years and that person just fiddled with a new category I made 9 minutes after I made it just now, I doubt he learns that by looking constantly at my contributions! Krok6kola (talk) 12:25, 10 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the information! My Windows 7 is a patchwork of "modifications". When I was trying to use Zoom I looked at Windows 10 (at the beginning of the pandemic). The only kind with cameras at that time was a desktop that did not need a tower, but I ended up doing nothing. I'm waiting for this to crash: I just hope I have my password for Wikipedia written down somewhere besides on the computer. You have been extremely helpful and I know Jmabel (who made it clear to A.Savin that he could not block me himself) has a very high opinion of you. Maybe the latter goes through my contributions but why does he bother? He has a joke about me on his user page, implying that I am an idiot and always running to COM:ANU. Actually the whole thing seems funny to me now but not at the time, especially when he got Steinsplitter to block me. Krok6kola (talk) 17:17, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

@Naledi Mathatho: Let me put it simply for you. You have behaved immaturely in violation of our policies, guidelines, or procedures. You have been warned, refused to stop, and been blocked. You have repeated this behavior on several WMF wikis. You have registered at least four more accounts (THE GIRL MOLLY, Mollytheone, Molly Mathatho, and Nale Mathatho AKA voy:User:Nale Mathatho) to avoid those blocks and continue behaving immaturely, in violation of our policies. One of your accounts, Naledi Mathatho, has been globally locked by one of our Stewards, Matanya. That indicates that, based on your behavior here on WMF wikis, Matanya does not want you editing here on any WMF wikis until you are more mature, no matter what account or IP Address you use. copyright issue

Hello The following pic has been uploaded for more then 100 years . the top right picture also contains the picture of my great great great grandfather Maharaja Prabhu Narayan Singh and we also had the book . I had no option as on the BHU page they removed his name and if i had added it without any reference then they would have again removed it so i had no other option and i also have the copyright as it has the picture of my grandfather and the photographer does not have the copyright permission and he has then kindly share it . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaurav 3894 (talk • contribs) 03:45, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

@Gaurav 3894: File:The founder members of BHU.jpg is a composite image which contains seven photos by up to seven different photographers. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept that image, and for each photo have the photographer or their heir post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Link from commons to wikidata

Hello Jeff, thanks for giving an answer here. How did you do this edit. I want to do the same for the Category:Giovanni Tocci (en.WP), but I cannot create the "links / commonswiki / name" entry. I have the feeling that this is a problem with missing user rights, because the "publish button" is not available for me. Can you explain this? --Kallichore (talk) 22:05, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

@Kallichore: Please see the following steps I did:
  1. Noted the lack of info on Wikidata at Category:Giovanni Tocci.
  2. Located the photo File:Giovanni Tocci.jpg in the infobox on en:Giovanni Tocci.
  3. From the photo's file description page, located the usage in Wikidata at d:Q20872346.
  4. At the bottom of d:Q20872346, next to "Multilingual sites", clicked "Edit".
  5. Clicked "wiki".
  6. Typed "commons" where "wiki" was.
  7. Clicked autosuggestion "Commons (commons)".
  8. Clicked "page".
  9. Pasted "Category:Giovanni Tocci" where "page" was.
  10. Clicked autosuggestion "Category:Giovanni Tocci".
  11. Clicked "Publish", resulting in this edit.
  12. Went back to Category:Giovanni Tocci and refreshed.
  13. Noted that info from Wikidata had shown up. If it hadn't shown up, I would have followed COM:PURGE.
  14. Went back to en:Giovanni Tocci.
  15. Edited the last section, "External links".
  16. Placed "{{Commons category|Giovanni Tocci}}" in a new line at the top of that section and saved, resulting in this second edit.
  17. Made sure that the "Wikimedia Commons has media related to Giovanni Tocci." box showed up in the bottom right corner.
On Wikidata, I am a member of group "Autoconfirmed users", and you are not (despite registration 518 days ago). You may ask for "Confirmed" permission at d:WD:RFP, or just ask why you couldn't publish at d:WD:PC.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:59, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the detailed answer. I could do all steps for the example Si Yajie (en.WP). So it appears that I have all necessary user rights. What I don't understand: why does the easy way (using the add links button in commons, like on Wikipedia) not work? Is this a bug or a feature? --Kallichore (talk) 03:27, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
@Kallichore: You're welcome. I'd call it a bug, though some programmer might call it an "undocumented feature".   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:37, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

Did you really check the files before you started this DR?

In this DR Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Necrocancer you nominated all the uploads for deletion and User:Fitindia deleted all files. I really doubt that either of you checked all the files before nomination and deletion.

Let me give you an example: File:Arashi Ryūzō I trong vai Ishibe Kinkichi, vở Hana Ayame Bunroku Soga.jpg. That files show this image: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/37330

Author is Tōshūsai Sharaku (1770-1825) and the date of the work is 1794. Other versions of the file can be seen in Category:Hana Ayame Bunroku Soga by Tōshūsai Sharaku.

Can you provide a case where a photo/scan of a 2D work like that can be copyrighted in 2021? --MGA73 (talk) 16:21, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

@MGA73: No, sorry, I did not check, I just questioned the judgement of the uploader. Fitindia decided to delete. See also User:Alexis Jazz/Assuming worst case copyright.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:25, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Okay. But if we delete all uploads by a user because of one deleted file then we have to mass delete millions of file. Take Fæ for example. I bet you can find at least one bad file from IA among the uploads. The upload had all the relevant information it was just not out of copyright. I think we should treat users that falsify information different from users that give correct information. If the judgement of the uploader is bad then why not leave a note at the talk page explaining how copyright works and then delete the bad files? If you check 20 files and they are all bad I can understand why you do not bother to check the rest. --MGA73 (talk) 17:37, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
I can also add that I and other bot users also moved many files from other wikis to Commons and some of them get deleted. So we are many users that have a few deleted files :-) --MGA73 (talk) 17:45, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Question

Hello Jeff G,

I would like to ask regarding this license on Commons: This image is a work of (entity) (or predecessor organization) employee, taken or made as part of that person's official duties. As a work of (entity), the image is in the public domain.

When can it be used and how? I see it under many official photos.

Thank you :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by TodrusMR (talk • contribs) 07:57, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

@TodrusMR: Hi, and welcome. Such templates generally mean that each file is in the public domain, such that you may use it however you wish, although we recommend that you attribute it as a matter of courtesy. For reuse of any file outside of WMF projects, please see COM:REUSE. Such templates are generally applied because work prepared by an officer or employee of the United States Government as part of that person’s official duties is excepted from copyright by Title 17, Chapter 1, Section 105 of the US Code. Some other countries may have similar provisions. See also Template:PD-USGov, Category:PD-USGov license tags, COM:US#Works by the US Government, and COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:56, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind response. Does this mean that public individuals or public organizations can post photos of themselves as part of their duties in Commons? Is this accepted or one of the options by Commons licensing? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TodrusMR (talk • contribs) 08:31, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
