Message

Hi Jeff, you let me a message, but I don't understant what is the reason. The last time I had problems regarding copyright was a month ago, since that time I have done all my effort to check carefully what file I upload, the result is none of my upload was marked as copyright violation. Jjrt (talk) 21:39, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

@Jjrt: Your upload File:Chimu Ciquic.jpg on 9 January 2021 was a copyvio because the source had license restrictions -nc- (noncommercial) and -nd- (no derivatives), which are not usable by themselves for Wikimedia Commons. For the reasons, please see Commons:Licensing/Justifications.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:50, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
It happened near a month ago, as a consequence of confusion made myself when I uploaded that file. As soon as I noticed the mistake (few minutes, less than 1 hour) I classified it to be eliminated as a mistake made myself, finally it was eliminated a few hours later. You can notice it checking the history of the image:
----->06:13, 9 January 2021 Túrelio talk contribs deleted page File:Chimu Ciquic.jpg (Author or uploader requested deletion of recently created, unused content (G7): CSD G1 (test page, accidental creation, or page containing nonsense or no valid content))
So, I don't understand why you left me a message.Jjrt (talk) 02:26, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

I gently ask you to revert or delete your message, because it doesn't fit in this case. Thank you in advance.Jjrt (talk) 23:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Google image search links

Hey Jeff G., I've noticed that you've been tagging images with {{Copyvio}} and including a Google search-by-image link. Those links aren't very stable, and can break over a short period of time. It would be better to include a direct link to the page where the image likely came from. Thanks, AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 19:17, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

@AntiCompositeNumber: When there is one likely source, I do link to that. As long as the image is still publicly visible, you should be able to repeat the Google Images search by image and get a fresh result using MediaWiki:Gadget-GoogleImagesTineye, or search via Tineye (which I usually can't do).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@AntiCompositeNumber: I think I fixed the problem with this edit, please see the first result here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:44, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I am a contributor of the Stroke Order Project, and I have a problem:

In 2015 this user VulpesVulpes42, uploaded 8 images(All from the page chunom.org) some as new versions and some as new files. Those should be deleted because that site do not specifies if their characters have a license compatible with wiki-commons.

Hypertext

The hypertext I want to edit is on the "Ethical Culture Fieldston School" Wikileaks page and concerns the notable alumnus Eli Zabar. (Jeff, I didn't quite know how to take or ping you, as you requested. So I am using this method, which I hope is good.) Jimneub — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimneub (talk • contribs) 13:48, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

@Jimneub: I see, this is about COM:HD#Hypertext, and eventually about en:Ethical Culture Fieldston School#Notable alumni and former students, where the spelling "restaurateur" in "Eli Zabar – New York City restaurateur" was introduced in this edit 21:01, 21 May 2011 (UTC). I fixed it in this edit. Please read Template:Ping.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:14, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Not true. I wanted to edit Eli Zabar's hypertext, but not about spelling. I still don't know how to edit hypertext. Can you help? Nor apparently do I know how to sign my entry. (This is all getting a bit confusing and difficult.) Jimneub — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimneub (talk • contribs) 23:46, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Translation

How can you translate a page written in another language but it's creator did not provide it in other languages. How can you translate it in oder to read, or should you request an authorised/permitted person to do it for you? Melinda Robins (talk) 23:40, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@Melinda Robins: I use Google Translate frequently. My favorite URL there is this one, which translates up to 5000 characters automatically to English. It can translate pasted text, pasted URLs, or uploaded documents. There are drop downs for other languages, and you can swap languages for replying. I write replies in English, and then translate to the other language.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:56, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Ok thanks I'll be sure to use it.But does it apply here on Wikimedia commons'URL address instead of its web address?Melinda Robins (talk) 00:05, 18 February 2021 (UTC)Melinda Robins

@Melinda Robins: I do a lot of copying and pasting. Whether that is with text or URL depends on the situation and proximity to the 5000 character limit. Also, my Google Chrome browsers are configured to automatically translate to English for me. Sometimes, I have to convince them to translate a page a certain way; for instance, when my normal language is English but I want to read COM:Café (our Spanish language Village pump), I may have to add "?uselang=es" to the URL.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:19, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Ben Edmonds

Hi Jeff,

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I'm still a little unsure what the best (and polite) way is to communicate with community members - hopefully this is ok? As I'm sure you've guessed I'm a real novice when it comes to Wikipedia editing.. but I am learning! :-)

This is regarding my query about Reference sections versus Further Reading questions - in this case for the Peter Edmonds Wikipedia page.

Peter Edmonds is my late father but I also have my own separate interest in history, particularly around Royal and crime related stories - and I like to do solid research across the related subjects.

I guess what I'm looking to do is just to strip out any of the citation hyperlinks within the existing Reference section and just have a new, cleaner, more straight forward Further Reading section which just contains a list of links for people to visit, should they wish to learn about the history in more detail or a different context.

Is that something you might be able to help me with?

I just want the page to be nice and clean with no errors and no dead-end links.

Any assistance you can offer will be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Ben (Edmonds), UK. Bedmonds2017 (talk) 15:42, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@Bedmonds2017: Please read https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-investiture-princess-anne-kidnap-attempt-heroes-awarded-buckingham-108149884.html closely. You wrote at File:Licensed Image of Princess Anne Kidnap Attempt.jpg that you purchased an "Editorial website" license. That is not good enough for Wikimedia Commons because it is time-limited and it doesn't allow commercial use. You would need to "Get in touch [with Alamy] for commercial uses". If an Alamy representative told you that you were legally allowed to use it for commercial purposes in perpetuity, I would want to see that in writing via OTRS; otherwise, they can sue you, us, and our reusers for copyright infringement. I suggest you nominate that file for deletion immediately. I did what you wanted in this edit, but you really should have footnotes.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:06, 17 February 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.:

Thanks so much for this Jeff!

It's such a big help. That would have taken me days to work out for myself I'm sure. The page already looks a lot neater, I really appreciate it. I will read up on how best to link/construct the corresponding Foot-notes that you mention, so that the page is further improved.

Following your tidy up, does that now mean I can now delete the References section (because it's no longer needed)? and am I also able to delete the error/alert message at the top? REF. This article includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations.

I'd love to get the page to the point where it has no error messages.

And thanks for your advice on the photo. I will contact Alamy again because I did pay them full price for the photo and they told me I could use it for a Wikipedia page. Also, the original of this actual photo was gifted to my father by the Royal Family and has been in our family's possession for 50 years now (first my father's possession and now mine), it's still hanging on my wall today :-) Also, it's a photo that was taken as a direct result of the kidnap attempt outlined in the Wikipedia page. But either way I will check again with Alamy, because it's a photo which means a lot and it would be a real shame to have to remove it.

Thanks again Jeff, really. I want this page to be as good as possible and you've been a great help. I was really impressed with how quickly you responded and how quickly you were able to make the edits.

No rush on the response, at your convenience.

Best wishes, Ben. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bedmonds2017 (talk • contribs) 13:38, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

Bedmonds2017 (talk) 13:54, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

@Bedmonds2017: The References section should stay, so that there is a place for footnotes to be displayed. You may remove the alert once inline citations are displayed as footnotes there. You may consult en:WP:REFB to help you with the inline citations. You may also upload the photo to enwiki in compliance with en:WP:F.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:38, 18 February 2021 (UTC)

VT Halter Marine edits help please

I am the communications manager at Halter Marine. Our Wikipedia page has been neglected for eons, so I set out today to add content. I fully understand the rules that content must be neutral and citable. I believe that is what I did -- I added content and cited it back to press releases we have published with links to our website. I added photos that I took myself, so zero copyright issues. The images I added are all mine.

I do not understand why my content was flagged. Nothing was puffery, exaggerated or glowing. As Joe Friday said, "just the facts."

Can someone please work with me to get my content re-published? I received notices from Jeff G but for the life of me I cannot find where to reply to those notices.

Our company page needs new information on the page, and I want to do the right thing.

Many thanks,

Liz Johnson

VT Halter Marine, Inc. editing questions

We are trying to edit our Wikipedia Page for the company to update information on certain pertinent events. In the process Liz was locked out from what appears to be a copyright concern, but all images used were taken by her. Now there is a lock on the main page. What do we do to unlock the company's wikipedia page, as well as her account her account? Once unlocked she will add the following to her User Page so as to indicate that she is part of VT Halter Marine, Inc.

Thanks,
