Hello, Jeff G.! I got your ping from my split-request thread; since it was already marked resolved I thought I’d reply here. Did I miss something WRT cleanup? I did edit the description & cats on the new 2012 file page and replace the image in the enWP article (as I presume was intended by the overwriting uploader). But it was my first split request, and I’d welcome any advice you may have on doing it better: the last thing I want to do is create more work for others.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:39, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

@Odysseus1479: Hi. What you did looks fine. I pinged you as a courtesy because Sreejithk2000 didn't ping you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:48, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
Ah, thanks for the thought then! As it happened I was watching the file and the request page; since I’d already reacted by the time I got your alert, I thought I must have neglected something. Maybe a lot of fuss over such a crappy little image, but it bugged me to see a file with a clearly ‘dated’ name being overwritten like that … anyway, all good now.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:49, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. We don't have pages on such topics here on Commons per COM:NOT; we call such pages articles and keep them on appropriate projects such as English Wikipedia, specifically en:Depression.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:47, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Could you please undelete the file File:Attraction club logo.jpg?. I have contacted the owner (Attraction Club) and they have sent an email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org in order to allow by written consent, the usage of the file. Thank you!Solicromania —Preceding undated comment was added at 12:41, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

@Solicromania: No. If a free license has been sent to OTRS, then the file will be restored automatically when and if the email is received, processed, and approved. Note that OTRS, like Commons, is entirely staffed by volunteers, and, also like Commons, is shorthanded, so it may be close to 7 days before the email is processed and the file is restored.
If the message was sent to the English language version of OTRS and the email has been properly received there the sender will receive an automatic reply with the ticket number. If the sender has not had a reply, please check that it was sent correctly and try again. Other language versions may or may not provide the automatic reply.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:50, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Could you delete all my uploded images please. The have been uploaded incorrectly. I need them gone asap as well as Harro Ranter is not happy. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 14:12, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Thx Jeff!!! Say I got the image of N1217A on the 23rd of Feb, same day it went down, dont worry the template and email sent to Commons has been done so im awaiting verification on that, and my lion air image. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 13:34, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: You're welcome. Your png photos may look fuzzy when scaled down, so you may want to upload a jpg version of each, too.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:51, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

I’d rather keep the PNG version s as I don’t like jpeg for obvious reasons.OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 18:33, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

Meh I’ll do it when I can, but again I don’t see a difference in the quality OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 21:13, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) That's good advice Jeff gave you. Unless/until Mediawiki fixes png thumbnailing you will always run the risk that png files containing photographic data will generate noticeably 'blurry'/suboptimal thumbnails, as evidenced in the links. -- Begoon 09:41, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Stalker? Erm well the photos are not useless as they’re being used as of to his date. But when I can do another version of them I might, bear in mind I’ll have to do another email template another email to commons and and email to the photographer. Yer maybe. 09:45, 15 March 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by OrbitalEnd48401 (talk • contribs) 09:45, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
You don't need to do any of that - the jpeg thumbnailing versions would be derivatives of the png files and thus under the same license. Either Jeff or I could easily take care of creating the files, correctly tagging them and replacing their article usage for you if you liked. Just ask and it shall be done. (a list of the filenames would be appreciated, in that case, to save sifting through upload history).

If, instead, you think it's all 'just too hard' then that's fine too. I'm sorry if you feel like people keep asking you to jump through hoops - templated messages can often feel impersonal and overwhelming, and I see you've had a lot of them on your talkpage. I wish Commons used them less, or more thoughtfully - but we do appreciate your uploads and we would like to help. -- Begoon 11:18, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

Yes please, I’d appreciate you’re help with that. Thanks OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 14:45, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

A Question

Hi, Jeff I have a question about public domain, I have a historical document which was written in 1875 in Jordan, but it has never been published before on the internet. So my question is Can I publish it here on Commons ? الرشيد (talk) 11:57, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, Jeff, Two questions, What gave you the assumption that I was attempting to take credit for David Livingston's work because that was not my intention at all, What photos would you suggest I use of the actor? Also I noticed you mentioned Notoriety, I thought my Draft followed all the requirements of Notoriety. The actor is a numerous high profile productions, has a large social media following, and more. Replacing MaxPixel with Pixabay versions

Ha, Jeff, for File:Carnival Masquerade Mask.png I got an error on file uploading because this time we caught the same version on Pixabay. — Speravir – 02:25, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@Speravir: Sorry. I was going for the low-hanging fruit (filenames with numbers before the dots) first, then I started grabbing numbers from before the dots at the ends of the MaxPixel URLs, then I got stuck on that png file because my iPad can't upload such files. Now I'm going back through my uploads in order from Windows to replace the EXIF metadata my iPad stripped (and I guess remove some jpg thumbnails or other invisible crap it added), then I will go back to the list, bottom to top so you can stay with top to bottom. Ok?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:33, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
No problem on my side, all fine. — Speravir – 02:47, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Possible assistance

Hi Jeff, I was wondering if you handle things on the main Wikipedia side as well? There been a lot of beef between me and some other editors that think my autism is making me incompetent editing here etc. Now I could explain it to you but I mean if you do some digging in my contributions you’ll find it somewhere. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 23:00, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: Hi again. Sorry for the length of this answer. I get all you wrote, that you are new here and on English Wikipedia, that there is a steep learning curve, and that everyone wants you to be perfect immediately and doesn't want to wait. I was new once, too. If someone is reverting your whole big edit, try dividing it up into smaller pieces, perhaps by section (or subsection or area), and explaining what you are doing and why in edit summaries (and if reverted again on talk pages); this is in essence en:WP:BRD. If someone tells you something has always been done a certain way that you disagree with, ask when and where that was decided, read the response and the decision, and if appropriate consider trying to change the consensus (or establish a consensus if it was originally decided by fiat). If you change your mind and decide they were right (or decide to abide by established consensus), tell them so, and thank them for giving you the information you needed to change your mind. Also, removing text that doesn't violate policy from your user talk page is considered antisocial (but archiving it is considered mere maintenance). In addition, it is ok to express that you are frustrated in general, but please don't personally attack anyone per en:WP:NPA (however, venting or using other stress-reduction techniques off-wiki can be very helpful). Beyond those specifics, please read en:WP:DR and practice what it preaches. The concepts are similar here on Commons, but we don't have (or want) an ArbCom, Bureaucrats here can't desysop, and our administrative and deletion related pages are divided differently between the projects. You are welcome to email me privately if you don't want to get more specific on-wiki.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:03, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Yes please Jeff, if I have to say a mere issue I have is with the way some things are worded here, like dates, if you say out loud 8 August 2017 it doesn’t sound right whereas if you say August 8th 2017 it makes sense, because beforehand if I read it I have to add that extra word for it to make sense. And what annoys me is if I bring up a discussion all I get is read the policy bla bla bla. The thing is why should people be bothered if things are worded to make sense, because then Wikipedia doesn’t look sloppy or male it appear children have wrote nearly everything on here. I’ve used Wikipedia a lot, especially at college and heck even they struggle at times to word things out of it. And when I have corrected those issues (before I join Wikipedia) I got a lot of crap thrown at me disruptive edotong and could be banned etc. This is what I saw. From my perspective I feel like some things should be changed because A) they make no sense when you read it out loud. B) dates, again they make no sense you don’t put ‘th’ in after the number so you say August eight 2018. It’s bloody frustrating when I get criticised for making things more understandable for others. Now no adding ‘th’ isn’t from my mind I learnt to add that in the old school days. The thing is it’s not like people that translate the English pages into French when they’re tanslated pages already available. Yer I’d rather discuss privately. 194.207.74.71 13:08, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: Please login to email me. I, too, learned "August 8th" in elementary school, then "August 8th" in typing class, both in the US. "Do not use ordinals (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)" is entrenched in the Wikipedia culture as per en:MOS:DATESNO (part of en:MOS:DATE), as it has been since I started reading Wikipedia some 13 years ago, and you must follow it until you can get it changed. Signatures also do not use ordinals and have the day of month first, as in "8 August". That is also entrenched, and self-reinforcing. I suppose both owe their origins to European typographic conventions, mainly UK and German, such as those we had as the original 13 British colonies in North America in 1776 (there are no ordinals in "July 4, 1776" on the United States Declaration of Independence at File:United States Declaration of Independence.jpg). I accept these in a spirit of compromise, and I hope you do, too. Please remember, you are using English Wikipedia, not American Wikipedia. On the other hand, you can change the date format you see on the rendered page in some circumstances to "August 8" format via en:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering and see signatures in your local time zone via a "Change UTC-based times and dates, such as those used in signatures, to be relative to local time" gadget enabled at en:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:16, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Okay that’s fine, I think I get that. But again what about when it comes to summairs, when you look at Ethiopian air 409 the summary has no desicrption stating why it crashed on landing. I feel like somaires should have at least a cause. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 20:05, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: Removing others' text that doesn't violate policy from any talk page is disrespectful to both editors and passing readers, please don't do it. So what do you think we should report as the summary of the cause of the crash of en:Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409 into the sea, as opposed to "Crashed shortly after take-off"? CRM, explosion, mechanical failure, something else? What evidence do you have to make your claim? If nothing else, I'd like to add "into the sea"   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:48, 24 March 2019 (UTC)

Well I spoke to my father a retired British aerospace engineer and after having a discussion, the aircraft according to a video made by the NTSB, shows the crew stalled the plane and Crahsed into the sea. So how about this ‘Entered aerodynamic stall; crashed into sea’.

Also could we collaborate together? OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 09:01, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: You could propose that at en:Talk:Ethiopian Airlines Flight 409.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:23, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Have done, could you leave your own comment slash opinion on their? Thanks OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 16:59, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Help with image

Hi Jeff, I’m really stuck. I’m replacing an image of aerosucre 4544 overrunning the runway. I’m resolving the image with a better resized version. Could you help? The detail I.e the summary is the same but I’ve realised the image. All that needs doing is replacing the image but keeping the same details. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 17:03, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

@OrbitalEnd48401: Why are you crosswiki uploading a fair use file and deleting warnings? Have you reviewed en:WP:F?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:08, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Reviewed the use of fair use on the image yes. There are countless videos of the aircraft on YouTube and other social media platforms. According to one video description the author wanted the video public, once I have gold of the video I’ll have the link filed here immediately. Also I don’t want the wanting on my talk page as the person in question said it wasn’t fair use. It is as I am using a screenshot from the video and it’s going to something educations. Here, I mean you’d only come here to learn about a particular accident so it would fall under that. If it’s wrong and I’ve done it incorrectly, if you could delete it then I’ll try to reupload it again with the missing details. OrbitalEnd48401 (talk) 22:57, 29 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Jeff,

In January you kindly blocked a couple of users from Beta Commons for testing purposes for me (discussion in your archives). I was doing some more work on the Android app's continuous integration system and have realised actually it'd now be useful to unblock them.
