Sujets représentés

Salut,

Merci Pyb (talk) 14:08, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Dealing with the URAA

Hi, I see from your posts at Commons talk:URAA-restored copyrights that you are interested in tackling the problems that the URAA causes us here on Commons. I've started a new policy that might help, at Commons:Hosting of content released to the public domain globally. Could you have a look, and also add your thoughts to the talk page? I hope you will support it! --MichaelMaggs (talk) 10:43, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Source says: © Nationaal Archief 2010-2014

If rights are reserved, therefore image is not a CC-licensed, I think.

I cannot read Dutch, so I could read the whole page.

Not sure where you see an "All rights reserved" mention. Source states « Auteursrechthebbende Nationaal Archief, CC-BY-SA ». See Commons:Nationaal Archief for background. Jean-Fred (talk) 21:26, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

I think it is better to remove the translation request now since we get some "oppose" and so the wordings need to be refined further. :( Jee 03:13, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Yes, sounds like the discussion will go on for a while. The translation was discouraged already, but I disabled it altogether. Thanks for the notif Jee, and good luck with the following discussion :) Jean-Fred (talk) 09:06, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
It seems the discussion is now almost ended with an acceptable wording. See V 10 last edit by Avenue 03:59, 1 March 2014 (UTC). So you may try again at Template:Personality rights/i18n. :) Jee 05:51, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
@Jkadavoor: I have updated the i18n page. @Jean-Frédéric: I would appreciated if you can make a quick review to see if I did it right. whym (talk) 02:59, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

???

Hi, Pleas stop doing such things. Thanks. --Steinsplitter (talk) 09:55, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Well, see above section − it appears the current wording will not survive the debate, and will not be ready to fly before a while (as in, it will take at least one RFC, five VP threads and three months of discussion before going anywhere :-þ), so I thought a good idea to unmark the page for translation. To do so, one must remove all translate tags from the page.
Do you disagree on removing the page from translation, or the way I did it (I’m not aware of any other)? Either way, I am fine with any outcome here − I already had discouraged translation the page, so this was just an extra-measure to make sure translators would not lose their time.
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 10:10, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
Oh, i dos not have seen the discussion. I suggest you to remove the Watchlist notice too. ;) --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:14, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
And "bah", is in is in discussion. :). All okay. Sorry for pinging you :D --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:19, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
Nope, I meant to do it but forgot − I repurposed the Notice on your ping :) Thanks! Jean-Fred (talk) 10:42, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

0/1 templates etc

I don't think the empty-link edit you made to those templates is legal. Both stars are GFDL/CC licensed which requires the link for attribution. If they were placed into public domain then we'd be fine. Is that right? -- Colin (talk) 08:37, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

GWToolset rights

Hey Jean-Fred,

Since there doesn't seem to be any process, do you think you could make me a GWToolset user, so I can test the tool out? Thanks! Dominic (talk) 21:05, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey Dominic,
Following a current discussion on Bureaucrats'_noticeboard, GWToolset user right is to be handed by bureaucrats − please ask them, there should not be much problem for you.
I can hand you the right on the Beta Cluster − if you are planning to try and break stuff, it’s probably the best place :)
Jean-Fred (talk) 18:32, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
Oh, I had no idea about that discussion. It makes sense. The Beta Cluster is actually fine, though. I don't have any specific upload project in mind at the moment, but I wanted to get familiar with the tool. I just created User:Dominic over there. Dominic (talk) 20:51, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
And you now have the GWToolset super powers over there :) Jean-Fred (talk) 21:32, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Command line tool info suppressed!

You deleted all the command line tool info! Please fix. --Elvey (talk) 01:35, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

No, I moved it to Commons:Command-line upload − I think the page makes more sense as a general overview, where users can pick up what tool makes sense for them. Do you think the link to the CLI help page should be more proeminent?

Request for feedback on my GSoC'14 proposal

Hi Jean-Frédéric,

I am planning to work on the project titled "Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content" this summer under Google Summer of Code. I have drafted a proposal for the same over the past few weeks. This project is going to help the translation adminstrators like you in a great way, as it would completely automate the tedious manual task of preparing a page for translation and then importing the translations into the Translate extension. You can check the proposal page for detailed information on how I plan to accomplish this.

As you would be an end user of this tool, it would be great if you could go through the proposal and provide feedback/suggestions. Your feedback would definitely help me improve the proposal as well help in creating an even better tool. You can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal or reply here, whichever is convenient for you. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

P.S: I need to submit the proposal to Google by March 19, 2014.

BPositive (talk) 13:46, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Jean-Fréd, could you explain in French to the uploader of this file why was his file deleted. He is trying to contribute and communicate, so I hate to just delete the file-page (now without file) without explaining what is going on. --Jarekt (talk) 12:12, 19 March 2014 (UTC)

You changed license, but still {{Wikimedia trademark}} should be there. Revicomplaint? 13:32, 20 March 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, that occurred to me afterwards too − I just added {{Wikimedia trademark}} to all the files I edited yesterday. Thanks for the ping, it prompted to do it quickly. Jean-Fred (talk) 23:27, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
Category discussion warning

Files from Blendo Games has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Salut ! Merci. Cordialement Floflo62 (talk) 11:28, 30 March 2014 (UTC)

New Video Template for metadata

Hi Jean-Frederic,

Maarten Zijnstra suggested you, so I am taking the liberty to ask a few question, but let me know if it is too much for you! I'm currently working at a large audio visual archive and we're wanting to donate more content to Wikimedia Commons. We are the providers of Open Images, Sounds from the Netherlands and a few other small sets. At present we are using the information template, but a lot of our meta-data is lost in the process. We have tried to put together a video-template. Would you be willing to look at it and provide us with some feedback before we create it? We are hoping that this template will be accepted by the community. See below. Video

|creator
|contributor
|title
|description
|language
|date
|medium
|institution
|place of creation
|notes
|permission
|attribution
|source
|accession number

A further question would be: once we've got this template in place we would like to change the information template on the current video's from Open Images to this new Video-template. I don't know how to do this. Is this something you could do for us or could you suggest someone who could? Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. GLAMwiki toolset

Hi Jean-Frédéric,

Congratulations on becoming a user of the GLAMwiki Toolset. You can find some frequently asked questions and helpful links for using the tool at GLAMwiki Toolset. As your first step, please add yourself to the list of users at GWToolset users and follow the good practice of creating pages explaining your new projects, as these can help create a focus for our wider community of volunteers. A standard place to set up a project page is at Batch uploading, though long term GLAM programmes may fall under GLAM. To discuss the tool with fellow users, please join the email list GLAMtools or try chatting at #wikimedia-commons webchat. SteinsplitterBot (talk) 11:24, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Template:Copyheart has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this template, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

RTA

Bonjour,

Merci. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:30, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi there! Recently I came across http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Palais_de_Chaillot. Could you help me here? If I understand the French copyright laws correctly, most of the files in this category (and possibly also in some of the subcategories) should be deleted. I saw you contributed to the Commons copyright info, so I thought to ask you. Thanks for your time. --Judithcomm (talk) 09:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jean-Frédéric,
I saw that you did some of the translations for the Commons:Photo challenge page to French and wanted to ask if you are still interested in translating texts for this project. If you are, there are several things that should be checked or translated: a) I tried to actualise the page itself (but I make many mistakes when writing French), b) I just posted translations to French and English for the watchlist notice (MediaWiki talk:WatchlistNotice - the last entry), and c) we started to translate the challenge descriptions themselves (so far only with langswitch to German).
Best wishes, --Anna reg (talk) 12:35, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Bonne-Garde, Abbaye (ancienne) - Ensemble ouest - Longpont-sur-Orge - Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine - APMH00016344.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

And also:

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 13:32, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Pyb (talk) 22:27, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

Bug in a category name

Hi Jean-Frédéric,

Thank you for the several pictures you uploaded with Commons:GLAMwiki Toolset Project in Category:Montfort-l'Amaury. I tried to change the category of those pictures but I ran into a bug. I used the Gadget-Cat-a-lot and it did not work because the name of the category had a special HTML sign ' in it for the accent. For exemple the File:Cimetière - Cloître - Montfort-l'Amaury - Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine - APMH00006537.jpg had category Category:Montfort-l'Amaury instead of Category:Montfort-l'Amaury . I made the change by hand for this picture but it would be easier to have the correct name of the category. I dont know if you can do something about it but I just wanted to warn you.

Regards. Lionel Allorge (talk) 17:29, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

I stumbled across your User:Jean-Frédéric/DatabaseQueries page via google, and tried to run the "Top uploaders of a given category" to find out how many users have uploaded media to Category:Wikimania 2014 (or a subcat) - see [2]. However it doesn't seem to have worked and I don't understand enough about either the query or the database to understand why. Can you offer advice please? Chris McKenna (WMUK) (talk) 15:58, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Hey @Chris McKenna (WMUK):
There are two problems with your query:
 • For Quarry to work you must tell it which wiki you are working on, using (in our case) use commonswiki_p; − see 413
 • This query is not recursive. Recursive category queries are quite complex.
Another solution is to use CatScan2 which will list all images in the category and subcats. Exporting the file as JSON, and using some quick Python, here is the result:

Hi Jean-Frédéric, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

 1. You edited User:Jean-Frédéric/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
 2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new jshint issue — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
 3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!
 1. ISSUE: line 2 character 91: Script URL. - Evidence: mw.util.addPortletLink('p-tb', 'javascript:importScript("MediaWiki:VisualFileChange.js");', 'Perform batch task', 't-AjaxQuickDeleteOnDemand');
 2. ISSUE: line 7 character 55: Missing semicolon. - Evidence: importScript( 'User:MarkTraceur/editDescriptions.js' )

Salut Jean-Fred. Me suis retrouvée ici ou .

Aurais-tu des personnes à me suggérer ? Anthere (talk) 11:04, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

Bon. Anthere (talk)

Thanks for uploading File:Abbaye Notre-Dame-de-la-Roche - Levis-Saint-Nom - Médiathèque de l'architecture et du patrimoine - APMH00035987.jpg.jpg.

Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 13:53, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Verser

Bonjour,

Cordialement. Thibaut120094 (talk) 15:44, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Bonjour Thibaut120094 !

Category:Photographs of Paris by Séraphin-Médéric Mieusement

Bien à toi, --Le Passant (talk) 16:42, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

Bonsoir Paris 16,

Bien à toi --Le Passant (talk) 21:54, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

I see you edited a page. But it breaks the page (that I fixed); so there should be some error in the script. :) Jee 16:20, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the catch − reported it on User_talk:MarkTraceur/editDescriptions.js#bug:_incorrect_template_insertion :) Jean-Fred (talk) 11:47, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

World War I batch upload

First of all, thank you for your uploads to Category:World War I, which really include some terrific photographs. It would be even more appreciated, however, if you had sorted the images beforehand and not uploaded them all to the main category. >1000 images is a lot of categorization work, you know? Also, many of the images have no obvious relation to World War I, but seem to show family life or arbitrary people in everyday situations. That's not what this category is about! It does not seem to me that you're completely new to batch uploads, having created templates for it and all that stuff. What I'm asking you is to be a bit more considerate in the future about which categories you mass upload into. Not all the images in one collection necessarily belong into the same category etc. That's all. Bye, --Prüm (talk) 03:59, 30 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi Prüm,
Thanks for the compliment. I performed this batch upload at the request of Léna but I’m nonetheless very happy to hear that there are useful images in there :)
I am indeed fairly familiar with batch uploading. Let me explain to you what are the constraints we have in the context of mass uploads and what is my approach to address it − I’m happy to hear criticism to improve my methods.
First, here are some general thoughts I wrote on my vision of a batch uploading, which explains a bit my method: User:Jean-Frédéric/Batch uploading vision
So, in order to infer proper categorisation, I index the metadata given by the archives, and have editors perform an alignment with Commons categories. Here it is: Commons:Batch uploading/Fonds Berthelé/Alignment. In our case, the most relevant are /subject and geoname.
At upload time, I harvest this mapping and add all the mapped categories to the images − in this case, 3672 categories (42 distinct ones) were added to the collection.
As you can see, this method allows to nail somes images in fairly precise categories like Category:Visits of military medical services in World War I or Category:Dieue-sur-Meuse in World War I. The downside is that some of the mapping is indeed fairly broad, like the 1572 files mapped to Category:World War I. That only reflects the metadata from the Archives.
An important aspect, though, is that if a file has both a very generic metadata and a very specific one, both mapped categories will be added. This is done that way because *there is no simple way* to algorithmically determine what is generic and what is not. I could have done something like "only add category WW1 if there is no other category" ; but then we would overlook all the ones that, say, were merely in Category:Portraits of Raoul Berthelé and not having it at all in the WW1 category tree.
So indeed 1572 images end up in the main WW1 category, but many of those also are in more specific category − because there is no easy way to do otherwise before upload.
After upload is another matter. Wikimedia Commons is equipped with very powerful tools to perform mass curation & categorisation (overview on Commons:Batch editing).
For example, it is trivial, using VisualFileChange.js, to recategorise all images containing "Vue aérienne" to Category:Aerial photographs of World War I. Or, using deep category intersection with CatScan (like this), to remove all files from the main WW1 category if there are present in a subcategory of WW1 by city (I just did that on ~600 files). Other fun stuff could be done using {{Intersect categories}} or Cat-a-lot
In summary: yes, I am aware of the constraints of mass uploads. The method I use is one that scales: when performing a batch upload one is not going to look at individual files to attach categories. There is stuff that can be more easily done before upload (for example, I used crazy regular expressions to identify date patterns in the description in order to add precise {{Other date}}, while the Archives metadata did not even had years) ; and other stuff that can more easily be done after, like cross-category curation. I do not think reasonable to expect mass uploads to be perfect − frankly, I am confident that, although clearly not perfect, the level of quality of my mass upload (both in categorisation and multilingual templates) is way above the average upload of even the most experimented Commons photographer).
To conclude: I hope you will not read this answer as patronizing − I certainly do not mean it that way. :-) I merely wanted to explain better the constraints of a mass upload, what is possible before upload and what is not, and what is simply more convenient to do after upload − although I understand this might annoy other Commons editors.
(Final thought: in this particular case, although I stand by the method I used, I recognise I have been a bit careless with my mapping − the mapping of subject metadata was way too broad and was mostly responsible, I believe, for the flooding of the main WW1 category. A tiny bit more of analysis of my categorisation insights would have tipped me off that this would better be ignored. Unfortunately, I was operating under very tight deadline because the requester wanted the upload done by Saturday (for an editing workshop), which left me very little time to polish things.
Thanks again for your enquiry, compliment, and criticism :-)
Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 19:56, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Oh, something else: Please do let me know if you have more ideas to mass diffuse further the files at the top of WW1 category. I do not see anything obvious − some might fit in Category:Life during World War I but not all. I’m happy to remove all of them from the main cat if that sounds better but that sounds a bit extreme IMO. Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 20:02, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi Prüm,
I spend a loooot of time subcategorizing files and I agree with you that it is better to avoid uploading pictures on general categories. But I also agree that, sometimes, like Jean-Frédéric pointed out, it is way easier to re-categorized after the upload. The tight deadline is entirely my fault, I should have worked on the mass upload earlier but obviously "I had time" so other Wikimedia and real-life events took precedence, and when I finally worked on it, I faced lot of technical issues, turnt to Jean-Frédéric for help and he faced even more issues :(
The issue is also that sometimes, metadata provided by GLAM are not THAT precise. For instance, File:(Crucifix) - Fonds Berthelé - 49Fi1453.jpg had a empty "subject" field. I agree it has nothing to do in Category:World War I : I'll work on it :) Léna (talk) 21:21, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Just remembered another interesting point ^^ The archives had mixed feelings about some pictures : on of the archivists only wanted to upload the most "useful" pictures, the other one said that it was not the role of the archives to anticipate what will or won't be considered useful. The agreement was thus that they gave all the pictures, and the Commons community will choose if some pictures are not useful. So really feel free to change categories or event propose for delation any "useless" picture : it will not lead to a diplomatic incident with the Archives :) Léna (talk) 21:33, 30 November 2014 (UTC)
Soo, after reading both of your replies I got an idea (Ok, it's not mine, but nevertheless I find it rather helpful for such cases). Why not create a category for a complete fonds (which can be further sub-categorized as needed, depending on size of the upload and possibility to sub-categorize), for example "Category:World War I images from Fonds Berthelé" and put that under the main category (here, "Category:World War I") or sub-categories under any sub-category thereof. For one thing, it takes a load both from your shoulders and the category maintainers'. And any sub-categories that have been utilized in the mass upload or been created afterwards can then be put under a fitting sub-category of the main category with ease. For example: "Category:World War I aerial photographs from Fonds Berthelé" could be put under "Category:Aerial photographs of World War I" and so on. The actual work of putting individual images in specific additional categories becomes then less of a "race against time". Also, you have the complete fonds all in one place for further analysis and refinement (ok, you did that already by using templates). One other category I thought of was "Category:World War I stereoscopic photographs from Fonds Berthelé", which would have quite a few members and which can go directly to "Category:Stereo cards of World War I". And you can name any number of further such categories, which can in the final result be kept in one place, fed into existing categories in one edit, analyzed and individually categorized into more specific categories by editors. So far, so good, I hope you were not too much offended by my initial post. I felt a bit let down with having to shift thousands of images. Keep up the good work and maybe give "my idea" some consideration in the future.

Jean-Fred (talk) 11:07, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

-- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 16:02, 11 December 2014 (UTC)

I noticed your participation in Template:Cc-by-layout; so like to know whether interested to participate in new layout design. Jee 03:25, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Machine-readable markup for languages/language names in Commons i18n templates

Hi Jean-Fred! I am trying to come up with a machine-readable standard for i18n in Commons templates such as {{En}} or {{LangSwitch}} so that CommonsMetadata can parse them correctly (right now it returns something like English: <english text> in some cases). I would appreciate your input at Commons talk:Machine-readable data#Machine-readable markup for languages/language names. --Tgr (WMF) (talk) 00:26, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Hello Jean-Fred,

I wanted to thank you for offering to help with the File metadata cleanup drive on Commons. We now have numbers to measure the amount of Commons files missing machine-readable information. Most of the files here have a license template, but there still about 500,000 remaining files (out of 24 million) missing an {{Information}} template, and that's where your help would be invaluable.

We're currently trying to find groups of files whose description pages are alike, so that we can use bots to automatically take that information and put it into an information template. If you still want to help, it would be great if you could look at the list of files and see if you can find such groups. You can also use the no_information tool to limit the results by uploader, or the first characters of the file name; this can help identify batch uploads.

Once you find groups of files with information in the same order or format, you can add a section to the bot requests page, so that a bot can go through them and fix them all automatically (or you can do it yourself if you have a bot, or with VisualFileChange).

In 10 days, we've already managed to add information templates to over 10% of the 500,000 remaining files. I'm hoping you can help us keep this momentum and get through the rest so we can get rid of this backlog once and for all :)

Thank you, and I wish you happy end-of-year holidays if you celebrate them! Guillaume (WMF) (talk) 18:55, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Wikimedia Education events has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!
