Xylem

Kelvin, your graphic for plant cell types is fabulous! I noticed that there is a mistake in labeling primary and secondary cell walls in the xylem image (they're switched). Ah but the problem is that a lot of the gas in Saturn isn't "gaseous", it's actually some strange state between a liquid and a gas. The hydrogen is more gas-like near the top of the atmosphere and becomes more liquid-y as you go down. So "Gaseous hydrogen" & "Liquid hydrogen" a little misleading since it implies that you splash from air into an ocean of hydrogen when you go below the Frenkel line—Love, Kelvinsong talk 02:45, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

I understand the unusual state of the matter in question. What do planetary astronomers call it? Can we use that term rather than "liquidier"? I think that making up a word is probably more confusing than using a word that doesn't quite apply but is nevertheless close. KDS4444 (talk) 09:05, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

I just did a quick look at some literature on hydrogen and Saturn. It looks like planetary astronomers just use the terms "liquid hydrogen", "hydrogen gas", "solid hydrogen", and "metallic hydrogen liquid", and "metallic hydrogen solid" when discussing Saturn's hydrogen states, even as they acknowledge that the hypothetical reaction path of hydrogen is continuous and circular. If these are the terms used in the scientific literature, doesn't it seem like we should be using them here? (although I agree that the "splashdown" concept is to be avoided if at all possible). I contacted an astronomer at UCLA regarding this question. Here is his response: "This is far from my area of expertise, but my feeling is that the best phrase might just be “denser” as it doesn’t imply anything wrong. I consulted a colleague in planetary sciences and he confirmed this: 'Denser sounds about right to me. There are most definitely phase changes in Saturn, and therefore stratification, even though there may be vertical mixing as well.' I hope that helps! Preconceived Notions Regarding the Structure of Mitochondria

Greetings Kelvin, I have recently come to discover that graphical depictions of mitochondria are from single-celled organisms. Most images incorrectly depict the mitochondria found in mutlicellular eukaryotes, as elegantly demonstrated in this paper. I was wondering if you would be willing to edit or have someone edit "Animal Cell.svg"? I feel that it is important to show how many cells, (especially those found in differentiated tissues), have networks of mitochondria. Even during my undergraduate degree in biology, not a single professor, TA or textbook ever mentioned the concept of mitochondrial networks/fusion! — Preceding unsigned comment added by StereoTypo (talk • contribs)

Hi Kelvin, I have added, to the FP nomination page, several links to examples of similar photographs taken by professionals. The dark lighting style is popular for glossy brochures and adverts. Nikon's class-leading new camera has a publicity photograph (http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikon-d810/images/shuttercutaway.jpg) that is very similar to the FP candidate. I also gave links to a couple of websites that help calibrate your monitor to ensure it is capable of displaying and distinguishing the full range of dark to light. I changed my vote to support. Though in that picture from your link, it's much easier to see the edge of the camera—it's a very dark gray rather than blending into the background. but anyway. Yeah, i'm just tried to edit your english hidden texts and there was some troubles for me, don't remember, transparency was permanent or unselectable/uneditable text (because of Inkscape or my skill :) so i decide to not left any new Cyryllic glitched or bugged layers in this files :)

I see typos in new Ganymede version: "Полаярна шапка" instead of "Полярна" and "у позрізі" instead of "у розрізі"

Also there is no numbering of ices in ukrainian wikipedia, they just called "tetra-, hexa-, mono- etc., so лід (1h) or (6) will be confusing for pupils

Typos in new Saturn: "Полаярне сяйво" instead of "полярне" and "Полярній шестикутник" instead of "Полярний"

MicroRNA illustration

Dear Kelvinsong,

First of all, I would like to thank you for your beautiful and informative scientific images.

I am writing to suggest some corrections to the image you previously created for the microRNA page, which would make it even better.

1. It is the pre-miRNA (not the pri-miRNA) hairpin that exits the nucleus. Also, most pre-miRNAs have a 2 nucleotide 3’ overhang (rather than the 3 nucleotide 5’ overhang shown.

2. Dicer removes the hairpin loop as you have nicely shown. However, Dicer typically does not also trim off nucleotides at the base of the hairpin. I see that your reference 3 might be interpreted as saying otherwise, but that paper was studying a hairpin with a 3 nucleotide 5’ overhang, which the authors say is not typical of a pre-miRNA hairpin. The base of the typical pre-miRNA hairpin is not trimmed (see Figure 1 of PMID: 17381280).

3. In plant cells the microRNA is usually not perfectly complementary to the to the mRNA. There is usually at least one mismatch. Instead of “perfectly complementary to” you could say that it is “nearly perfectly complementary to”. (I’ve also corrected this wording in the text of the article.)

4. Each miRNA is associated with only one Argonaute protein.

5. The presence of the microRNA does not “block” translation, but you could say that it “reduces” translation. (What actually seems to be reduced is translation initiation, without any blocking/slowing of ribosomes that are translocating along the associated mRNA.)

6. With regard to the pairing to targets usually observed in animals, you might consider dropping the preference for an A or U across from nucleotide 9, since this is a weak preference compared to the other preferences that you illustrate. Although it would be good the keep the supplementary pairing to nucleotides 13-16, the text could say something like “Nucleotides 13-16: Perfect base pairing to this region can supplement pairing to the seed region but is not observed for most targets.” (see Figure 1 of PMID: 19167326).

Font distribution platform

After reading your PDF and the typographyforlawyers blog post, I must say Wikimedia is never "democratic" but semi-meritocracy. It straightly denies democracy in "What Wikipedia Is Not" policy. Surprise surprise (actually you should have known that), Wikimedia Foundation does hire and pay employees like Google does, the only difference is that Google is for-profit but not Wikimedia. I have no problem with this system, but when it comes to type distribution, Commons is not an ideal platform for that because its management of resources is not meritocratic. I always have problem with the many low quality unusable sexual media files on Commons but no admins dare to wipe them out, ever. The sole reason I use Commons is entirely because other sister projects rely on Commons for copyleft media files. I think it make more sense to apply for a new wiki project like "Wikitype" for that very purpose. -- Sameboat - 同舟 (talk · contri.) 06:54, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

@User:Sameboat Yea Ik wikip/media is not a democracy; I meant that top-down approaches don't go well around here (cough Media Viewer). If I went to the WMF first I’m sure without community support I’d be brushed off, && even if it did approve it people would accuse them of being all unilateral or whatever & “wasting” resources. Important to keep the community in the loop. && I thought there was a “no new wiki projects” thing? Dear Kelvinsong, First, I enjoy your illustrations and have been known to borrow a couple for my (free) website for my students (docpelletier.com). Second, I have been contacted by what I believe to be a for-profit company, called "Learnerator." (http://www.learnerator.com). in a recent email from them offering help for AP Biology, they included an illustration I recognized as from the wikipedia page on RNA transcription, created by you. Of course, it is possible they have an agreement with you to use your work. However, I wanted to make sure you were aware.

You could try getting in touch with them and letting them know they're engaged in a copyright violation, and that all they have to do to fix that is credit you. If they refuse, a DMCA claim is always an option. Hello dude! I saw your tutorial on how to make the SVG Globe, i tried to make it but failed i've never done any coding before so i had no clue what to do or what all the numbers meant :(. I just really want a picture like https://gyazo.com/87c98777ff8406db6ea191dcfff78773 exactly like that with out the background, but i want the photo to have a much larger resolution. If you could help me out with a render of a globe with a larger resolution i'd be happy to transfer you $10 for you time. BTW the larger the resolution the better.
