Mixing content categories with user categories[edit]

Hi, can you please not mix categories like Category:New Orleans 2002 by Kaihsu Tai into main tree? If you want to make a category out of that based of the subject, and not the non-notable creator (which is irrelevant), please do so. Rocket000 (talk) 11:56, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi. The category is a collection of photographs of New Orleans in 2002 by a single photographer. I don't see any problem with the category, and think it is reasonably useful. However if there is some prohibition against this sort of thing, I'd suggest adding "Category:2002 in New Orleans" to all the individual photos in the category before removing the category from the "main tree". Thanks fo ryour attention. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 22:38, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Canal by country[edit]

But who searches for a canal by country, should also know in which continent it's situated. So you can first choose the continent, next the country. It's the same thing, only with one stap between. Do you realy want that I put all countries in the whole world in only one category? If you really want, I will do it, but I just don't understand where the problem is.

Sorry, I dont speak English (only portuguese).

File:MuleCreekStatePrison.jpg[edit]

Hi, wanted to upload this file... and saw that you already deleted it in the past although this is clearly written on the web site "In general, information presented on this web site, unless otherwise indicated, is considered in the public domain." and for this picture, nothing additional is written. So why? Kelson (talk) 20:57, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

1)Front page [1] says "Copyright © 2010 State of California" as does the "Visitors" sub page where your photo apparently came from [2]. 2) Please note the wording you quote in context: [3] says "In general, information presented on this web site, unless otherwise indicated, is considered in the public domain. It may be distributed or copied as permitted by law. However, the State does make use of copyrighted data (e.g., photographs) which may require additional permissions prior to your use." You were taking a photograph from the site, which seems differentiated from "information" described as being "considered in the public domain". Your image gave no authorship information nor any link to a description on the site where it was found, leaving no way to determine authorship or license. 3) You tagged the photograph as licensed under the GFDL; I could find zero evidence of that license. Hope this helps. Infrogmation (talk) 00:05, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

CommonsHelper files[edit]

Why have you been removing information on the files transferred from other wikis via CommonsHelper, adding your own opinion that original upload logs are "trivia", and removing actual information on the source as here? Sure, the CommonsHelper description is sometimes not that good, but the information in it is often important as I've noticed to find out about the actual source, and opinions should surely never be inserted in this matter. And if you see problems with CommonsHelper, why not take them to Magnus Manske? —innotata 00:06, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please take another look at the link you provide above, which I think is a good example. I have removed no valid information; I have corrected a good deal of misinformation. If my rewording some transwiki details as "trivia" is opinion, describing it as the "original upload" is an outright lie. Better wording in the interest of accuracy is welcome.
Bots are by nature dumb, and at best will only do exactly what you tell them to do. In my opinion whoever operates them in transferring files should take responsibility to check the bot's work and clean up as necessary. Thanks. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 10:28, 13 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I basically agree with what you just said (especially about what toolserver bot users should do—I try to do this, but nobody else seems to), but I'd mostly now like to take issue with one thing: at least unless something else can be agreed upon, I'd think it is right to use the template {{Original upload log}}: I simply can't see anything wrong with what is said, and considering internationalisation. Here you didn't really make anything false, just a little confusing, hence my annoyance at your actions, and thinking they were simple vandalism before I saw your user page—here changing Wikibooks to Wikipedia. —innotata 23:52, 14 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Small categories[edit]

Hello, could you explain me the sense of small categories like this one? I really don't understand it; I had just thought that the other categories of the Louisiana Representatives with only one image in it should be deleted. Regards, --Scooter (talk) 13:09, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that categories with just one image are usually not very useful. In short, it's a category I was planning to add more to but haven't yet gotten around to doing so. I created that while working with a few other early 20th century Louisiana politicians I was adding some images for. There's another photo of him on en:W I've put a note should be moved to Commons. There are usually more PD photos of pre-1920s US Senators around that can be gathered with a little hunting, so I expect the category will become more populous. Thanks for your feedback. -- Infrogmation (talk) 13:42, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion of my photograph[edit]

Hi, you recently deleted my photo via http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Donkeykongcountry&diff=0&oldid=16085249

I am an actual representative of the musician, and not only had the permission to use the image, but actually owned the image (and was giving permission for the image to be free). You seem to have moved very quickly on this, without asking for comments, which feels a bit hasty. Can you please revert the deletion?

If you need some sort of proof of ownership, let me know.

Thanks! Donkeykongcountry (talk) 14:57, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According to the description you placed on the photo, the copyright holder of the photo said "I give my permission for this file to be posted on Wikimedia commons and for the file to be used for non-commercial purposes". Non-Commercial use is not considered free licensed for Wikimedia. See Commons:Licensing. That alone is sufficent for speedy deletion. Additionally, you tagged the photo as your own creation and public domain, which directly contradict the description text as to source and license. If you have permission from the copyright holder to share the photo under a free license (not just "non-commercial"), you should email a confirmation from them to Commons OTRS, as is the usual procedure for images which are not the uploader's own work used by specific permissions from third party copyright holders; see Commons:OTRS for details. If there is confirmation of a free license from the copyright holder, the image can be undeleted or re-uploaded. Hope this helps. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 15:08, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fountains?[edit]

[5]: I would tend to think that an indoor drinking fountain isn't really a "fountain" even though that word is in the name. In UK English, they don't even use that term, it's a "bubbler". - Jmabel ! talk 20:11, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thats how they seem to be categorized by country at present. If you have a better idea, suggest it. Maybe something in the Category:Water supply infrastructure by country. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 21:33, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just Category:Plumbing, which is where we put sinks? - Jmabel ! talk 01:45, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Plumbing" sounds reasonable enough to me. Note however that the Water supply infrastructure already has subcats by country. We need some cat in "Drinking fountains in the United States" to denote that it is in the United States. Do you think we should start "Plumbing by country" categories? I think I have to beg out of making a final determination here, as a must admit I'm not familiar enough with terminology to know the precise dividing line between "plumbing" and "water supply infrastructure"; you might wish to get feedback from User:Ingolfson for feedback, as I notice he created the latter cat and some associated cats. Thanks, Infrogmation (talk) 01:55, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
"Plumbing by country" categories sound fine to me. Normally "infrastructure" means the big stuff: dams, pipelines, treatment plants, etc. - Jmabel ! talk 04:37, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi folks - my gut reaction to reading this was that "drinking fountains", whether indoor or outdoor, probably belong both in "water supply infrastructure" and the general "fountains" cat. After that, I looked up the Wikipedia article, and it says the same right in the header too - fountains include drinking water fountains. Now if you think about it, that actually makes sense, because while we today see fountains mainly as decorative items, their historical use was often around providing drinking water in a town/place that had no private plumbing (whether or not that fountain was also an elaborate artwork).
Of course the Commons / modern understanding of fountains assumes that you don't drink the water, so the current Commons structure of fountains should not be changed into "drinking fountains" (nobody seems to have suggested that, just thinking about it in the historical context). Regarding the original question, I think placing the discussed files in a "drinking fountain" (i.e. the modern sense of a drinking fountain) and then placing that in both "fountains" and "water supply infrastructure" is the way to go. "Plumbing" probably would only apply on individual files, especially indoor ones. So much for my thoughts - happy editing. Ingolfson (talk) 20:25, 5 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing that for me; I've no idea how I missed the subcat! Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:07, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with a couple uploads[edit]

Hey! Sorry to keep dumping my mistakes upon you. I've uploaded some photos but either made mistakes assigning names to the new files, or duplicates of the same photo (mostly a long time ago). I still don't know my way around Commons, despite some help from another user at times. When I began uploading and placing all my musician photos, there was an upload bot thing from User:Magnus Manske. Worked like a charm, till one day, it crashed I guess. I looked for other upload-from-Flickr-bot things, but I never could find one that didn't want an ORTS ID or something.-BTW, am I in any way a "trusted" person to be able to qualify to upload using ORTS? I only use Wikimedia Commons to upload photos for Wikipedia that I have already checked to see if they are needed. More recently, I've also placed them in more Categories here. Do you know of an upload bot one? What can I do? I've uploaded more than 1,200 photos, placing all but maybe 10 of them, maybe 80% of them are manual uploads, where I have to email and then re-email possible photographers to find the photos and explain Creative Commons, too. An incomplete LONG list has a link on my en.Wikipedia userpage!! I know it's ironic that I'm asking to be trusted after messing up, (but, I could fix them too-- and those mistakes of others... Anyway, there are three photos here requiring help.

  • OK, the three current problems first BTW, all of these photos are placed in the right articles on en.Wiki, but the file name needs changing if only for Commons.
  1. File:Rickenbacher 360-12-001 by Hal Hawkins.jpg (The guitar is spelled wrong) Should be Rickenbacker, with a "K".
  2. Next- a photographer provided a photo that he thought was of Mark Knopfler with David Knopfler (of Dire Straits- until David Knopfler himself emailed us both to say they were of Mark and Hal Lindes, (who was David Knopfler's replacement upon quitting the band). Thus, this one:File:David-Knopfler by Rik Walton.jpg The file name should say "Mark Knopfler and Hal Lindes by Rik Walton".
  3. Unfortunately, that photo listed above was also cropped, to place on the personal website for David Knopfler, too- of Hal Lindes, as mentioned, but still not David: File:David-Knopfler by Rik Walton.jpg It should say "Hal Lindes by Rik Walton" instead. David Knopfler chose to upload his own personal photo, which IS placed on most Wikipedias with a page on him now.

More thoughts- about the photographers' rights to attribution. I don't know more than 12 editors anywhere, don't know how I should go about accessing the "Village Pump" or whatever equal might be here. I think:

    • As the occurance of "Wikibooks" are taking off, those photographers are genuinely concerned about the photos they allow me to upload- CC-BY-SA. As you know, the best they can expect with Creative Commons (even now) is a non-visable link from the actual reading page in Wikipedia to their names and Flickr photo streams here in Commons. I mentioned it to a couple other Admins. (of en.Wikimedia only)- this is a new practice I'm adapting-- when manually uploading photos, making sure that the photographer's name be part of the "File name", so there is some smaller chance of separating their name from the photos.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 01:41, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Assistance requested with copyvio issues[edit]

Hi,

I'm a non-admin Wikipedia volunteer who has a solid history of uploading pictures, usually without problems. People have emailed me pictures, and given me explicit permission to use them in Wikipedia. What I'm finding is that many of my pictures are being put up for deletion on what I consider dubious grounds -- that is, I feel I'm being picked on in connection with a brouhaha over the Paul Revere-Sarah Palin controversy by another user named User:CutOffTies. And I'm being asked to cross every t and dot every i. So, I'm wondering, can you please help me understand how to do the OTRS system? Must I have every person who took a photo, or if they're a person in in the photo, email explicit permission, one at a time? Or is there a way to streamline this process? Please note that I'm a volunteer who has given his time freely to help raise serious $$$ for Wikimedia Foundation (by doing an editing for donations project in which WMF got a serious check from an indie music label); it is unlikely I will keep volunteering if I am treated unfairly. Please help me understand what I should do to keep the pictures. And which persons or which forum can I turn to for help?----Tomwsulcer (talk) 02:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for your work. I'm not familiar with the case; I'll try to look in to it later today or tomorrow; only on line briefly now. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 17:05, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'm getting help, and (I think) have figured out how to do the OTRS emails and such. I guess it's difficult for all of us when we have to deal with rather nebulous issues such as copyrights, permissions, emailed requests, templates, and it can get rather trying, can't it?--Tomwsulcer (talk) 20:14, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ambulances in Louisiana[edit]

Did you mean to address your message to this person instead, as I didn't create this category.  ;) BrokenSphere (Talk) 15:15, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, I probably noticed your name as creating Category:Ambulances in California (which had the same problem), and incorrectly assumed you'd done the whole batch. Thanks for your time. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 17:11, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
