British Isles 10th century

Many thanks for all your work on this. I seem to remember that with your original map clicking on 2000px blew it up so as to make the names more legible. Am I correct on this and would it be possible to provide a facility to blow the map up and put instructions how to do this in the 'description'? Thanks again. I have no idea how to do this. There are two rectangles in the right bottom of the picture in the article that are supposed to enlarge it. It links to the Commons' page of the picture and than you have to click once again on the 2000px link. Many thanks once again. I find now that clicking on the map blows it up, so maybe it was a problem with my computer that it did not work before.

Yes, sorry, See should be Sea. Corrected. Please let me know if you want me to changes the colours. I have chosen the swamp/alluvium colour without any relation to the adopted colour conventions in Wikipedia. One other point is that I have used another map to present the coastline as it was in the 10th century but I have to consult some experts on this point. New map

Hi Ikonact. You very kindly said that you could help with a new map. If this is convenient, I have a further request. I have been working on w:Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, and I have amended the map which is currently on the article and created a new one at [1]. I am not sure how legible my writing is, but places I have added are Conwy, Much Wenlock, Buttington, Tettenhall, Gloucester, Berkeley, Risborough, Pyrton, Thorney. Hi Dudley Miles, I will check what I can do. I think the best will be to recreate the map in the article and make it in vector format. Then I will add your modifications. I will keep you informed. Topographic map of Austria available?

Hello, I noticed you created some nice topographical SVG maps such as this. I am looking for a pure SVG topographical map of Austria (actually interwar Austria but I do not think there have been any border changes since the 1920's) but I did not find any yet. I wondered if you would know of such a map or if you could point me to a good tutorial that would let me create something like the Guatemalan map you drew but for Austria (I am afraid I do not know how those maps are drawn). Hi, you do not bother me :) Your message reminds me that I have not finished the Guatemala map yet :) Regarding the requested map - have you checked the maps in Commons? There should be a map that you can use. If not, there are tutorials how to create maps. You can check here but it will take you a little bit of time. If you want to make it yourself read this page. Hello, I tried looking for it in Commons but all I got so far is a bitmap map (this one though there are other similar ones, all non-vector). And when it comes to maps, I would rather use vector ones. I will check the link and see if I can try to create it myself (it would be interesting learning). If I see it is too complex for me I will try your suggestion and ask for it in the workshop. There is no real hurry yet. It looks fantastic. If possible, it would be nice to have the provincial boundaries and the provincial capitals added as well (if feasible and easy, if not this version is more than enough for what I want). My goal is to have a map that shows the geography of the new country (new in 1918) and, if possible, the basic administrative boundaries (the provincial borders) and main cities (the provincial capital cities and towns). If the interwar borders of the neighbouring countries were available (they are different from the current ones), that would be nice to have too, but I doubt that can be readily extracted from any source.

On the other hand if you do not mind my asking, I started reading this tutorial but it seems it is written for Windows users and I use linux. It seems some applications (3dem at least) are not available for linux. Do you know if there exists an alternative tutorial for linux or if the same procedure can be performed under linux too? I saw Grass GIS is available under linux (my version's interface is different from the one in the document though) but I am not sure if the 3dem steps can be skipped or carried out under Grass GIS...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 06:07, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

@Rowanwindwhistler: I have no problem to add any kind of modern boundaries and cities. I will do it later today or tomorrow and let you know. For the interwar borders I do not know if there is digital geographical data. I may try to find some data or try by hand but I never did it and do not guarantee anything. Regarding the tutorial, you have to ask some experienced users. I have never used it. Thank you! I am not sure about the interwar borders either, I would say they will not be available with any digital source but internet may surprise me... Anyhow, if the provincial boundaries and capital cities can be added, that should be ok. No, that should be easy enough. I will create the Spanish version for the Spanish Wikipedia once the map is available in Commons and I will create an additional version with no borders for the neighbouring countries for the interwar period (as borders then were different, mainly the Italian-Yugoslavian one) but that should be easy too if the map has layers. thanks for the offer, I am currently working to update and combine language and dialect maps, for example Alemanic Languages update versus current version. The aim would be to identify areas with a population of less than 1 person per km² or 3 persons per sqmi, and topographical maps are one way to do so. I have Austria, Switzerland and Russia mostly finished but I would appreciate svgs with obviously inhospitable areas of Bulgaria, British Isles and Cyprus of your maps, if you have time and willing to isolate those.--Alternative Transport (talk) 13:43, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

High elevations, and steep elevation increases, as paths in a svg. Also Rivers and lakes, coastlines and borders would be great. By the Swiss and Austrian maps I had a populated areas map, which I then drew into a svg and split into languages and dialects. By other similar countries, I start with a full map and then subtract obviously inhospitable areas, national parks, mountains, swamps, if I cannot find a good population density map.

@Alternative Transport: I can make a try with high elevation for the map of Bulgaria. I do not have the steep elevation increase because this requires to work out a little bit my algorithms. I can put rivers and lakes, coastlines and borders. If this is OK for you I will make a try map but generally you have all this already on the existing maps. SVG shades

Hello @Giorgi Balakhadze: , happy to see that you like what I do :). I do not use any graphic tool to create my maps. I use a script of mine that I have developed to generate the maps from raw data. It works with Octave. I use Inkscape to finalise them. If you need some specific maps I can create them for you. I know that there is also a way to create svg shadows in Inkscape but I've never tried. If you have raster shadows you can vectorise them in Inkscape in the menu Path > Trace Bitmap in the section Multiple scans: Creates a group of paths select Scans: 8, check the option Greys and check the option Remove backgrounds. Thank you @Ralph Corderoy: I made a small script on Matlab/Octave to generate the maps. Unfortunately, I have some issues with Octave, in particular with the limitations of the size of the matrix for the DEM data. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

@MacedonianBoy: They are in Category:SVG topographic maps of Bulgaria Most of them are about Bulgaria, but those I mentioned are on the border with Macedonia. @Furfur: Hi Furfur. There is a problem when downloading the file. It stops in the middle. Than the browser displays an error because the svg is incomplete. When I try to display it in a browser there is an error, but every time the error is on different line... may be you can try to download it later. I was unable to download anything. I thought that you might have the original file locally on your computer and might be able to fix the error. I assume that some kind of expresion, like " or > might be missing. @Furfur: I have exactly the same issue. But this comes from the fact that the file is not fully downloaded. Download stops on Line Nr 34337 in your case and that's why the path is not closed. If you try to download it again you will see that the error is not on the same line. I think this is a problem with the download in Commons. The file is quite big for an svg but not exceptional. Hello Ikonact, I don't think that it is a Commons problem. I have uploaded SVG files that were up to 20 MB in size in the past but experienced never any problems with downloads. I think there must be some kind of syntax error in the file. Did you try to validate the file by uploading it to the validator? --Furfur ^{⁂ Diskussion} 20:01, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

You mean that the Validator said that the SVG syntax is ok? Hmm, ... it still doesn't work. Maybe it is really a problem with the renderer ... I realized some lines are double-tracked and some are in under construction, do you think we can perhaps display that in your map? I would love to know your input on this. I'm actually fan of the topographic background, I think makes it look much more interesting, also the city of پارس آباد which is on the tip of the map (on the tip of North East) is not related to railways map and is not too important city. I also discussed your work in Wikifa's Village pump (here) and asked if anyone has any suggestions or see mistakes, one user was asking if we you could possibly add under construction projects, but we have already discussed it. --Gnosis (talk) 02:55, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

@Gnosis: I removed the city. I added a version in English. I will not try to include under construction projects as I do not have reliable geographical data. If you need to do so, you can derive another map from this one, simplify it and add project lines. Hope this is OK. If yes, I consider the map as finished. Also one more thing, I was looking at this map and realized in how many different languages used this very low quality topographic map, I think now that you've made this railway map, with some moderate modifications, maybe we could replace. @Gnosis: This map you mentioned is quite convenient for a quick look of the relief. Of course, I can make another map but it will be more sophisticated not just relief... like the one I did for Corsica or you can see some other examples on my user page. However, this requires a bit more than adapting the previous one and some more time because I draw relief, neighboring countries, hydrology and transport networks. I need also reliable information. Thanks for looking into it, I think it would be a great asset to a ton of articles related to Iran. If you need any help with that regard (eg. finding info) I'll be more than happy to help. Just one last thing, in fawiki's village pump (here) someone requested a font change for the infobox, he requested a font like This font for the purpose of readability, I asked the creator of that file and he said he used a font named "Gandom-Font" at https://github.com/rastikerdar/gandom-font and it's a free license. --Gnosis (talk) 21:24, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

@Gnosis: I changed the font, but "Gandom" is not among the installed fonts in Wikimedia. I think when I use this font a substitution is applied. Could you check and let me know if this is OK. @Gnosis: I started the translation of the file here. This is a multi language version. You can display the file in Persian by using [[File:Corsica-geographic map.svg|thumb|Corsica-geographic map|lang=fa]]. The translation is partial but you can finish it using the SVG translation tool. Just choose Farsi in the right menu and continue with the translation. Once finished you can download the file and upload it in Commons by replacing the current one. Just know that the tool cannot display the map and a pop up message with an error appears from time to time. Do not pay attention. unlabelled physical map of SK + HU + HR

Hi Iconact,

for showing the distribution of Gothic brick architecture in the countries of the former Hungarian crown, see de:Liste der Backsteinbauwerke der Gotik in Ungarn, der Slowakei und Kroatien, up to now, I use a derivate of the map of Danube basin, which in the present state mostly is my work

(I am not lucky with the resolution of that Danube map taken from the source of my extensive revision. With an 1.5-fold resolution, the bitmap could have much better a graphical quality. But there are more important works than drawing this map once more.)

Different from GeoHack and similar software, in my maps of the distribution of architecture, the names of all architectural sites are visible at the same time.

This quality I consider important for understanting architectural history and perhaps learning the localizations by heart.

I'd prefer to use an unlabelled background map such as in de:Backsteinbauwerke der Gotik/Verteilung in Südostpolen, de:Backsteinbauwerke der Gotik/Verteilung in Italien and the oher maps of de:Atlas der Backsteingotik. I have recoloured the borders from dark grey to (pale) pink or lilac colours and made also rivers a bit pale to keep lables readble if they cross these lines.

Are you able to provide such a map?

• A map whithout cities is what I had imagined. But the borders of the countries should be visible, preferably in a colour similar to that I've used in the provisional map., between lilac and pink and a bit pale so that crossing labels can be read.
• For more general and different applications, the extend of your map is better than mine, Therefore ist should be kept either in the present state or with borders.

Bathymetry Map of the Mediterranean

There is a project I am working on offsite, and it involves hypothesizing what the Mediterranean would be like at different depths, environmental effects and the like. It's heavily influenced by the Atlantropa Project that thankfully never amounted to anything, but we were curious what the follow-on effects would be at varying levels of sea drainage. Unfortunately for me, I have been assigned the task of drawing up the land maps for the various scenarios under consideration. Now I realize that you worked on the Bathymetric Map of the Mediterranean Sea about five and a half years ago at this point, but I haven't had even the remotest success elsewhere, and I'm at a loss as to how you made that map; while I use Inkscape quite a bit I am still not really well versed in its use, and I'm assuming/hoping that you didn't eyeball the contour lines for your map. Could you please tell me how you drew it up, what program(s) I might need to use to trace over the data on ETOPO1? --Ariostos (talk) 00:32, 10 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Ariostos: It's a bit difficult to explain how I made my maps. I created some scripts to be used with Octave or Matlab and they are published on my fr.wiki. However, if you wish I can create a map for you that you can parametrize. Just give me the different depths you need and I will do it. Manipulated Map of Iran

Recently, Some groups have been trying to publish the wrong map of Iran (Map without the Persian Gulf, Caspian sea, Oman Sea is not a map of Iran). It is a national concern. I am wondering how Wikipedia can help to return those maps to the original map of Iran. I keep the Eastern border different as this is not an internationally recognized border and put the names of the Somalia regions on the East instead of Somalia. I assume the map is finalised. @Siirski: I finalised the map. Regarding the border I prefer to focus on the geographical aspects and avoid any political claims. From what I understand the border is not internationally recognised and therefore I would keep it as it is. You are free to adapt the map in accordance with the license. Map of state-mandated "In God we Trust" display

Dear Ikonact,

thank you for your effort in making the map of states by their laws of display of "In God we Trust". I would like to note that it's not entirely accurate. 1. UPD: Gov. Abbott of Texas has signed the obligatory display of donated examples of the national motto into law. 2. Correction: Idaho does not mandate any school to display "In God we Trust" - it only concerns the chambers of the Legislature. 3. I believe the map could be better if made with a richer legend:

• States mandating display in schools;
• States mandating display in schools if donated (Texas, Ohio);
• States mandating display in at least some state/local govt agencies (Kentucky, Idaho, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi) - explanation that Fla., Ga. and Miss. do so because the motto is on their official state symbols;
• States allowing display in schools;
• States allowing display in state/local govt buildings.

I have no problem to update it with more categories but I will be grateful if you can indicate the states per category. Once I have this information it will be easy to update the map. • add country names: Serbia, Bulgaria, (Romania)
• add the names of the highest mountains (Botev, Midzor - the highest mountain in Serbia; maybe other mountains)
• the map is "glued" down a lot; add a bottom edge
• add the names of the three main parts of the mountains: Западна Стара планина, Средна Стара планина, Източна Стара планина
• add the name of the river Danube.

@Pavouk: I agree that there is visually less space on the lower part but I tried to leave similar space at the bottom from the most southern point as at the top from the most northern point. Unfortunately the shape of the mountain is such that it is difficult to leave the same visual space and keep the mountain as the main object on the map. Hi @Newman039 Nice that you like my maps! I would like to have a bit more time to work more on them but I try to do my best. Regarding my scripts they are such a mess that it is better not to present :-) But the principle is simple: read the data, find the countours, print in svg file. No Problem. I will do it. I made something similar in the past here. Few points:

• It will be nice if you give me an approximative idea for the frame in geographical coordinates. If not I will make a draft based on your request. I can use this or this as frame. If you wish I can extend a bit north/south/east/west. Let me know!
• I may struggle a little bit with the old settlements names. I will let you know once I have a map. I will probably first put the actual names and then change.
• If you wish to include settlements that are not existing anymore you shoudl tell me. I did some maps (like this one) with historical settlements but this requires some knowledge that I do not have.

Thank you so much Ikonact! You can use something like this for the frame, but showing the administrative borders like in this. Can you make the fonts, border styles, and roads in a similar style like this map. I can certainly help you with the settlement names. If you like you can produce the map with modern names and then either change the names yourself with my assistance, or send me an editable version where I can edit the names myself. Whatever you prefer. Settlements that are not existing is not necessary. The higher resolution the better (I'm planning to print it and hang it on my wall perhaps 18 inches by 24 inches :) ). Thank you so much @Ikonact, for a first try this is amazing! You are very talented. The things I would want different are: (1) can you change the colors of the elevations so we can use more green for the valleys, instead of the whole map being different shades of brown, like in this map. (2) Can you make the borders a thicker transparent line and can you add the municipal borders like here also with a thick transparent line. When I say thick transparent line I mean like in this map. (3) Also can you place the 2 legends in the bottom left corner. Those are the only changes I would request. (4) Can you add railway line if possible? (5)Edit: I think I can change the settlement names myself (I have PDF editor so I will try with that). @Extratall, I have uploaded a new version trying to address your comments. I changed the colours of the roads but if you prefer the old way I can revert. Let me know if this is OK and once we agree on the map I will see how we can translate the names. This should not be difficult as the file is text file and you can open it yourself and modify. Amazing @Ikonact! (1) Yes please revert colors of the roads (2) I really like how you show the shape of each settlement! Is it possible to add a small black circle on the settlements for the villages? The circle for the city is perfect you don't need to change it. (3) Does the legend colors need to be updated to reflect the new colors you chose for the elevations? Also, is it possible to add a legend for the other symbols (city, village, roads, railways, borders)? (4) can we make all the borders thicker, maybe double the current size? (5) For some reason the railway line is missing from Florina to the border. If its possible to add it that's great if not that's ok too. @Extratall: I will ask you to provide few clarificaitons:

• (3) Does the legend colors need to be updated to reflect the new colors you chose for the elevations? - In fact it takes already into account the elevation. If you see all between 0 and 400 is green. Then the other colours are correct in the legend. I think it can stay like this, do you agree?
• (5) For some reason the railway line is missing from Florina to the border - My understanding is that this railway is disused. See OpenStreetmap. Could you clarify?

One more question. Would you like me to change some of the limits of the map? I see that I can put for example a little bit more on the south to inlcude Kastoria in the map. (3) I agree no change needed. If you can make it larger that would be great. (5) Yes it is currently disused due to politics, however it was completely reconstructed about 15 years ago so it's only a matter of time before they decide to use it again. It shows up on Google Maps. If you cannot add it to the map that's ok. Also good idea, you can extend the map south just enough to show the name Kastoria and extend the map north just enough to show the name Bitola. Thanks @Ikonact!! Everything looks good @Ikonact, the only thing is half of the minor roads seemed to have disappeared from the previous versions (the ones around the villages), and for some reason the main road that goes west from Florina is cut and missing a section. @Extratall I updated the map as requested. I hope I did not miss anything. I have extended a little bit on the west as the border was touching the edge of the map. I added also settlements and roads in Albania. Could you please let me now if this is OK in terms of elements. OK, I will leave the map as it is. You can translate the names using the tool. Please note that this creates a multi-language file that you need to upload in Wikipedia and choose the language. Once you create a multi-language file let me know and I can turn it in normal if you prefer. Check if this will work...if not we will find another way to translate! I'm not sur ethe tool is working for me. I tried to enter a translation for the first village it didn't change it and it automatically uploaded a new file. @Extratall I made this page. It looks horrible but when you open for edit you will see it is well arranged and easy to find the names. You can edit the names directly. @Extratall I added the Bulgarian names. Go to the file, select Bulgarian from the box "Render this image in" and click Go. You will see the image in Bulgarian. I think the geographical map of the balkans map is great because of the high resolution and detail, but theres just nothing available with that quality and that much detail like cities, populated areas, mountains and everything like that.
