Hello, Hindustanilanguage!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

re: Afghanistan map

It's not really within my ability or desire to make an accurate map of the provinces, only to create a baseline locator map. If you need a more detailed map, there are many other sources for them. --Golbez (talk) 20:55, 29 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting Commons File

when you are linking to an image on Commons, this form is shorter and easier to read:

Note "[[:" at the beginning, which produces a link rather than the image.

File:Punjabi Maseet.jpg

Hi Hindustanilanguage !

You requested to rename tihs file but there is a problem : I'm not sure the reason matches our criteria.

Could you please be more accurate and edit your request ? Thanks ! Papatt (talk) 18:27, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. : the problem must be the same with File:RubyLalitKolhe's Hindi Marriage Certificate.jpg since no filemover dealt with it.

That's OK then. Best, Papatt (talk) 07:31, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Hindustanilanguage, today I came across your message for renaming File:Punjabi_Maseet.jpg into Urdu. It is really a funny idea. Tomorrow you can request for renaming all mosques in Spain and Germany into Urdu with the same logic. And the next week you can ask for translating all names into Urdu......--Khalid Mahmood (talk) 11:24, 17 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Elfriede_Jelinek_Autograph.jpg

Bonjour Papatt. Qu'est que vous fait?

I see some strange categories marked for my upload cited above. Normally, for all the hundreds of autographs which I've uploaded I placed under the "Autographs" category. Other Commons users have categorised further, in some cases. The strange categories marked are: "Media needing category review in use at en.wikipedia", "Media needing category review as of 5 August 2011", "Media needing category review with 2 suggested categories". Can you please help me in overcoming these special remarks. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:52, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hindustanilanguage !
I first noticed that bots (non-human processes) tagged this file. The first time it was because you misspelled the category, you corrected it. The second time it added the category:Elfriede Jelinek and asked to check if it was relevant. That's the purpose of its tag, I'd say you may delete it now.
However, the category:Autographs contains now 400 files and should be more sub-categorized than it is now (maybe by the initial of the person's sirname or more relevant).
Best, Papatt (talk) 15:23, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Hindustanilanguage !
Well, your both categories are orphans : they need to be categorized too. Also, their names are somewhat misleading.
While Category:Shaz Tamkanat should be Category:Autographs of Shaz Tamkanat like other categories in Category:Autographs, Category:Khushwant Singh, which includes other things that autographs, should be splitted into more relevant ones (e. g. Category:Works of Khushwant Singh and Category:Autographs of Khushwant Singh), the existing one staying as their mother-category (to be categorized within certain people) and appropriate to include photos of the person and other relevant.
HTH, Papatt (talk) 23:41, 22 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In fact I'm not an admin but a filemover. That all I can do on Commons (but suggestions ;).
Renaming a category is not that easy since files still stay linked to the unrenamed one. A bot can be resquested but it has to be discussed, thus recategorizing few files may be the fastest way to proceed.
First recategorize a single file with the wished category name. The link will be red, you can use this link to create your new category. Then recategorize the last files, the link should be blue. If relevant you can also ask for the emptied category to be deleted by including the moved to <new category> template where <new category> should be explicited.
Since my proposals were only examples, please feel free to use names you think relevant.
Best, Papatt (talk) 09:06, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I saw a little problem in the categories you created : when you add a bar "|" after the name of a mother-cat', wiki sorts them according to what is after this bar. I. e., your categories stayed in the first sub-list, according to the <space>-initial you specified.
Typically, a person's category should include the template to clarify how Wiki should sort the categories in each mother-cat' but if you wrote them it that order it's mostly useless.
HTH, Papatt (talk) 11:43, 24 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I wasn't clear enough, sorry.
First, when you categorize a file, close the blackets without adding something after the name : it alters the way files (and categories) are sorted (ordered) in the category you specified.
Second, to alter the way files are sorted in every category (useful for person's categories which name is written like "<Given Names> <Surname>"), add before every category the tag , thus this file will be listed by surname instead of given name.
Maybe you should have a look at this typical example.

File:Autograph_of_Maulana_Abul_Kalam_Azad.jpg

Hi, this file was used in Urdu and Farsi (Persian) versions of Wikipedia. Now it is not used in any Wiki Project. How can I know the project pages and reuse or ask an editor to do the same after renaming? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:56, 4 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hindustanilanguage !
I first checked if your file has been normally renamed : yes it has.
That means that all usages of the previous name will be replaced across all Wikimedia projects ; you can find this in the relevant page (a search for "Maulanaazad" in it is helpful). However I don't know when it will be done.
If you don't want to wait for it, the shortest way would be to edit the pages where you know you saw your file.
Best, Papatt (talk) 10:09, 7 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Papatt. I think I'll have to wait because I don't know the pages on which this file was referred to. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:20, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bonjour monsieur, can you help me in knowing when all usages of the previous file name will be replaced across all Wikimedia projects, merci beaucoup.Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:30, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it will be done when the relative line in the relevant page will disapear. The easiest way could be to check if your file is still linked to this page. HTH, Papatt (talk) 12:41, 15 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indian Navy

hey man what is the encyclopedic significance of that video you have uploaded on Indian Navy page please let me know.--Vyom25 (talk) 14:06, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well man, first I suggest you create a userpage. Coming to your concern about the video - it aims to highlight a tradition in India - Defense personnel train their kids to be recruited to serve the country just like them. This video is just intended to highlight that same - that a father is seeing his son being trained to shoot- even if it is just a toy gun. Perhaps, the son is just predestined, or perhaps, is being trained for future. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:39, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I use Wikipedia commons rarely so that explains my blank user page. You can visit my user page in English Wikipedia. By the way someone has already removed that video so no further discussion is needed.--Vyom25 (talk) 13:40, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, Dear Filemover!

Hi Hindustanilanguage/Archive 1, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
 • Please do not tag redirects as Speedy. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

You're posting a message as if I uploaded the file. If you disagree with the naming, suggest a better name. similarly, suggest an appropriate Category. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:33, 15 April 2012 (UTC).[reply]
I posted the message to you because YOU removed the 'rename' tag and YOU added a silly category. As far as the half-completed 'rename' tag, I was hoping the uploader would suggest a rename along the lines of who was in the image (because neither you or I have any idea who it is). As far as categories, I would think no category is better than a nonsensical one. I will revert your changes since you're not really sure what you were doing. Hopefully you won't toddle by again and do the same silly thing twice. – JBarta (talk) 01:12, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IP reverts

[3] and [4]?!?! "Unknown IP address holder - request could be wrong". Those are easily the strangest revert reasons I have seen on any wiki. You should consider reading EN:WP:BITE, or for that matter check the identification yourself. The two species are completely different and there are several photos of both on wiki. Or you could check the flickr source for the two photos, which both have the correct identification. But you didn't bother. You just reverted because the change was by an IP. I have reverted your edits. 212.10.73.34 18:29, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Renaming File:sąd rejonowy.jpg to File:Nysa, sąd rejonowy.jpg

You've adhered to a rename request from an IP to rename File:sąd rejonowy.jpg to File:Nysa, sąd rejonowy.jpg. There are some two to three cities in the world named as Nysa including one in Poland. The normal renaming is done as Taj Mahal, Agra and not the other way round - Agra, Taj Mahal - So is the renaming correct? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:27, 18 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

I don't think there is ever a "correct name" - short ones are incomplete and detailed ones are unwieldy (and prone to errors). Admittedly, I often miss to correct the awkward suggestions by the requesting editors. While you have a good point to add Poland here, en:Nysa suggests that Polish Nysa is the dominant destination for cities, and the Polish language in the name gives a hint. Cheers. File:INTERIOR STAIRS VIEW , OLD HIGH COURT.JPG

Its fascinating what can be done with google when you play detective now. As you say at AN there are lots of High courts so the place to start is with the uploader. Click on his history and you will find that he has only one edit here which is not very promising. So I googled his name, the first hit was this page aha, its about a high court in Dhaka. Lets try googling "High Court, Dhaka", this came up with en:Old High Court Building, Dhaka. Comparing the text and looking at the edit history of that page, I am pretty sure that the uploader of the image was interested in this particular high court and that this stair case belongs to Category:Old High Court Building, Dhaka. Sometimes playing detective with a file will take me days, this one was easy as the uploader only worked on one article, but for those of us who like to play detective it is very rewarding, and it is not neccessary to delete a file because it does not seem immediately useable. We have the category Category:Unidentified subjects in which any unidentified subject can find a home.--KTo288 (talk) 11:58, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. for this insightful information. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 13:30, 21 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

You're welcome.--KTo288 (talk) 13:54, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I took an even easier path, I just looked at the global contributions of the uploader, and saw straight away that he created the page en:THE OLD HIGH COURT BUILDING, which was moved to en:Old High Court Building, Dhaka. But the interesting thing is looking at the edit history of en:THE OLD HIGH COURT BUILDING and we see he continued to edit the old page even after the rename/move and he added lots of photos - perhaps some lost material there that can be added into the en:Old High Court Building, Dhaka version. He also edited under two usernames. It appears that he didn't put a license on the other photos so they were deleted, and perhaps he was upset/confused by the article rename and deletion nominations, but he never fixed the licensing - we lost a genuine contributor. --Tony Wills (talk) 12:31, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File renaming criterion #3: Correct misleading names into accurate ones. There are more than one photo of Lorne Greene in different years.

Hi,

I noticed you moved File:Lorne Greene.jpg to File:Lorne Greene 1942.jpg.

There isn't really anything misleading about pictures not being dated. Please be more careful when processing rename requests. --  Docu  at 17:31, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Its not me to request renaming the files. As regards to confusion of files named after Lorne Greene, please refer to this page before saying anything. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]
I agree with User:Docu, that was a totally unnecessary file move. It is *not* necessary to rename files to distinguish them from other similar files. Please read the guidelines again, and the discussion on the guidelines talk page. Reserve the use of file move/rename to correct gross errors - the examples are quite specific. People do not search for files by filename, they either select them visually from a category etc, or use "search" which searches the descriptions. Yes, there is always a "better" name for a file, but that is not a good enough reason. "Lorne Greene" was not a misleading filename, in fact it is a quite accurate file name. Details of when/where/why etc can go in the file description (in multiple languages). A file name is *not* the file description. I hope I don't sound too abrupt, I'm just tying to help a little :-) --Tony Wills (talk) 11:58, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with User:Docu too. --Sreejith K (talk) 12:45, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Right or wrong, this renaming is only part of many renames on Commons which can disputed, and perhaps, people like you can do remedy. Take the case of this discussion with Materialscientist or my discussion with Hoo man in connection with renaming a file which contradicted the description in the file itself. Is this an attempt to incriminate me overlooking a few good things I keep doing for Commons? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 13:47, 23 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Sorry, we are not making complaints against you :-), keep up the concientous work :-). But we have a system where people request renames with Rename and other trusted users check to see whether there is sufficient reason to move the file (those trusted users are granted the "renaming rights"). This project (Commons) is not like other wikipedia projects where it is just their own wiki use that they need to consider, moving files here often just creates other more subtle problems elsewhere that are often not immediately obvious. We are just pointing out that your interpretation of the renaming rules is too broad. The renames will not be reversed by anyone, but just keep in mind people often request (or insist on) unneeded renames. --Tony Wills (talk) 20:50, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's what even I am trying to say - in the two examples I cited above, my Commons friends exercised their powers in good faith - although somebody - including my humble self can dispute their moves. You can dispute my action in one file move, but you may kindly note I was careful in the other two file moves. Caution is precisely the only thing we can exercise in such cases. Regards, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:05, 24 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Good to hear. In this case, the reasoning of the requester didn't match our policy on file renames. Possibly this somewhat slipped through when you attempted to check it.
If we start to rename files to distinguish them from other images of the same subject, not only would most files on Commons be renamed, but we would keep renaming them when we get more files of the same subject.
Adding information to the description field is generally a better choice when attempting to distinguish several images of the same.
Sorry that the fact that two other users agreed with my comment gave you the impression is is some sort of attempt of [whatever], but I suppose they just happened to come across your talk page for some other reason.
BTW, I should have started my comment by thanking you for processing some of my rename requests. --  Docu  at 06:30, 26 May 2012 (UTC
You are always welcome. I will extend all my cooperation for any constructive help I can offer to you as a friendly fellow Commons User. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:35, 26 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]
File:Commons Logo in Marathi.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hindustanilanguage (talk) 18:21, 1 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Nobody doubts your Hindi skills or your willingness to contribute to the project. Just that a few edits of yours were not seen the same way you intended it to be. I think that can be forgotten now since you have already said that you have learned what went wrong. The reason why I withdrew the block on you was that I see a good contributor in you. I believe there are a lot of things in this project where you could be of great help. Otherwise, why would I even point you to a template which is awaiting translation. --Sreejith K (talk) 16:09, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as mentioned before, please use useful categories and don't over-categorize images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Temples in India +
Category:Tamil culture +

You'll help to save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu or much more specific

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). Do not add - in addition - the categories of the "parent category", among them cities, states and countries etc.

For further information on categories please read asap Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the commons:help desk.

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 20:16, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Krzyż

"Krzyż" is in polish language "cross". In Poland are many hundert thousand wayside crosses in many hundert thousand localities. Please rename this file "Krzyż" to "Dymitrów Mały, Krzyż" or "Wayside cross in Dymitrów Mały" 80.171.102.69 06:31, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please address the grievance of your compatriot. (s)he's terribly angry with me. I've no renaming problems if this is done on friendly terms. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:34, 19 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Hallo, Hindustanilanguage. See please: File:Krzyż przy drodze cross.jpg, File:Krzyż Jaszkowo.jpg, File:Krzyż1 Ciele.jpg, File:Lipków - krzyż.JPG, File:Krzyż Trzciniec.jpg. "Krzyż" is only "cross" without locality. cheers 80.171.102.69 06:50, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
With the Krzyż I do not have a problem moving it. The name is quite general (cross as 80.171.102.69 wrote) and very much true there are thousands ot these crosses all over Poland. Its not part of a series, it has no date. ...Sicherlich talk 07:33, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From Rillke's Discussion Page (Rolling Back File Moves)

Hallo Rillke, As you are aware, I am a humble user and filemover on Commons, which is why I try to exercise judiciously in the renaming the files on Commons. Recently, there was some problem when a German/Polish user asked for renaming a file terming it as meaningless. This was when the uploader asked me to rollback the file to its original name. Since I could not rollback, I renamed the file to the old name with .jpeg extension instead of .jpg (See User request problem.) I therefore request you to grant me rollback rights for helping other Commons users in situations such as these. Regards and best wishes, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:49, 21 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]

File moves can't be rolled back using the rollback right. This is a technical limitation. Sorry. -- RE rillke questions? 07:37, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. for the info. What is your solution for such situations? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:10, 21 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
You have to ask on COM:AN to move-over-redirect back to the original title. -- RE rillke questions? 08:24, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Persian (Farsi) version of the Categories has been deleted with message "Copy from Farsi Wikipedia instead of Commons". I request the restoration of the page to have active participation of Wikimedians from Iran and Persian speakers from across the globe. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 15:16, 19 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Wouldn't it be better to make an actual translation of Commons:Categories into Persian? Jafeluv (talk) 06:57, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I second that, seems the right way to do it.--Trex2001 (talk) 07:00, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in case of copies, the revision history should be imported or at least the users who contributed should be mentioned. The page contained many red links because it was just copied and therefore it may also contain misguiding suggestions. -- RE rillke questions? 07:23, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know Farsi - so can't be of help. But what's the problem in restoring a deleted file when the act seemed to be on flimsy grounds : "Copy from Farsi Wikipedia instead of Commons" - the same can be said for any language. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 11:02, 20 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Because it's a collection of red links with misguiding content that was made for Wikipedia, not for a media hoster like Commons and a possible copyright violation? Why don't you trust Mmxx, who is the deleter and a native speaker of Persian language or ask him directly and, instead come to this noticeboard? -- RE rillke questions? 14:15, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Politically, it is a bit tricky too as there are important "marketing" efforts to use everywhere "Persian" in stead of Iranian language, and to try to make farsi disappear, while technically, en:Persian language is a collection of old and current languages, Farsi becoming the 'modern Persian" or "Contemporary Persian" I guess. I have undone several "merges" related to Farsi. --Foroa (talk) 15:45, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Farsi and Persian are names for the same language, depending on whether the speaker wants to make the language seem new, modern and hip, or ancient, important and dignified. I suspect a large part of introduction of "Farsi" into English was the Shah's Iranian government, that changed the country's name from Persia to Iran. Yes, Persian can be used to refer to distinct older languages, as can Greek, English, German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, etc. Iranian is just wrong; there are many languages spoken in Iran, and none of them are uniquely identified by Iranian.--Prosfilaes (talk) 07:07, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to contact either one or two native Persian speakers on Commons or elsewhere and see what can be done. I posted a message on one Persian-speaking Commons admin's talk page a few days back, but I did not get any reply. Can any one of you at least paste the text of translation on my talk page. It can probably be of some help. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:23, 21 June 2012 (UTC).[reply]
Why?! It is this version just without files, the first template and language links. I compared this with a diff. You can pull it yourself if you need it. -- RE rillke questions? 08:43, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
