Hound Tor[edit]

Not totally satisfied with File:Hound Tor stitch.jpg but it will do. Reason for the ping is File:Dartmoor Hound Tor.jpg, you weren't sure on ID - I am now :)--Nilfanion (talk) 23:42, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Re-reviewing my pano noticed something. The granite at Hound is very different to the stuff I'm more used to in SW portion (clearly visible feldspar megacrysts at Hound). I think it would be good if we got snaps of the granite from different parts of the moors showing the differing composition (with scale).--Nilfanion (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why not? Of course, I'm no geologist so I'm not sure what's actually useful :) Personal priority is still to try and get the tors done though.--Nilfanion (talk) 11:10, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree - I'd imagine judicious use of coins/rulers would work. Bigger issue is getting a decent surface so the structure is visible. Either way, something else to try to remember on walks.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Put it in "landslides", that's definitely not optimal (cat is bloated) but... Question is if its a rockfall or a w:rockslide. I'm inclined to say that latter, in which case there's an obvious WP article to use it in :)--Nilfanion (talk) 11:12, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Check the en article? "The Quiraing is a landslip on the eastern face..." That said it does look odd, and I imagine many images not directly related to the slip are included :)

question[edit]

You responded to a deletion request from [1] and deleted File:Nabiscocup.jpg. 80.187.106.77 nominated five other images for deletion today: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Those five other nominations are identical -- cut and paste. Those nominations left me with doubts about the anonymous IP's judgment. Can I ask what evidence they provided it was a {{Copyvio}}? Geo Swan (talk) 23:51, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was more than happy that this was not any form of own work or validly licensed. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:41, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Plus - this is the same file (re-uploaded) and I would imagine will get deleted too. --Herby talk thyme 08:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about derivatives of non-free content[edit]

Hi,

Thanks for deleting two of the recent images I uploaded (File:Hubba Bubba Ouch! package retouched.jpg & File:Hubba Bubba Ouch! package.jpg). I wasn't aware that they would fall under derivatives of non-free content. I've got a question regarding this: one of the reasons I went ahead and uploaded those photos was that I noticed several other files of similar products that were uploaded (e.g. File:Pepsi 2009.jpg, File:Dr perpper 75 2.jpg, & File:Eclipse-mints-orange-and-cinnamon-flavours.JPG), so I am wondering - what is the difference between my image and those that I linked to in terms of being derivatives of non-free content? Wouldn't the logos and designs on those other products also qualify as being non-free? Or do those more simplistic designs not fall under the threshold of originality? Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 18:14, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Point well made and taken - undeleted for now. I still think they probably should go but not with the certainty of a speedy anyway. Let's see what other think shall we. Regards --Herby talk thyme 18:17, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense. Looking at the images, it could probably be argued that my photos of the gum package could qualify as being more original than the other images, as the little green bandage blowing a bubble could qualify as a copyrighted character. Then again, there's this. I really don't know. My guess is that it will still end up being deleted, but we'll see how it goes. Thanks, ~Kevin Payravi (Talk) 18:30, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback[edit]

I have a fair idea of how to use it :) I appreciate it, though I may not use it often, it is much easier than popups and the undo function. Thank you again and I will use it with discretion.--Sandahl (talk) 15:47, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem - if I can help you know where I am :) --Herby talk thyme 17:52, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No copyright violation[edit]

file:LOGO_wooddesign_mittel.jpg‎ can be used, as there is nothing to be protected. I understand that you have not warned the uploader. Please upload this file in DE, where it was used. --Eingangskontrolle (talk) 18:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly a copyrighted logo so without specific permission this cannot be hosted here. As to informing the uploaded it is something that should be done but it really should be done by the tagger of the image. I would maybe delete 100+ items a day - I cannot check than all. I am unable to upload the image anywhere. --Herby talk thyme 08:01, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quality Image Promotion[edit]

Your image has been reviewed and promoted

Congratulations! Smeatons tower - Plymouth Hoe.jpg, which was produced by you, was reviewed and has now been promoted to Quality Image status.

If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Quality images candidates.

We also invite you to take part in the categorization of recently promoted quality images.
Comments QI anyway, but perhaps even a bit better if you selectively denoise the sky a little bit and carefully correct the distortion of the lighthouse. Picture good enough to invest a little time. --Mbdortmund 16:21, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comments Good and useful.--Ankara 14:48, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would take a look at this, please? I just New Page Patrolled it. I hung {{Delete}} or {{Copyvio}} on several of the images, but I'm uncertain about the gallery itself. On the one hand, it's a gallery -- lots of images on a single subject. On the other hand, it's very political and has, particularly in the lead, more text than is usual in a gallery. Also, the creator, User:Mfi.media, plainly is an arm of the subject. I know that NPOV and COI are not issues on Commons, but I don't know how we feel about Galleries that have a definite POV. Thanks, . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 13:07, 19 May 2010 (UTC) (I should add that I ignored copyright issues in most of the photos of posters on the grounds that the posters were probably made by this same organization. While the tags may be technically wrong, as a practical matter there is probably no copyvio since the photographer, the uploader, and the poster maker appear to be the same organization.)[reply]

Don't you hate the awkward ones :) I looked at it earlier (only quickly) and felt pretty much the same as you but edged on the side of leaving it. I'm out for a bit now but will look some more when I get back. You are basically correct in what you are saying btw - it would be an issue on en wp (name, pov etc) and that is not the same here (took me a while to get used to it!). There is maybe an issue of the images requiring OTRS verification at the least. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:13, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right - all the "cite" nonsense is not applicable to Commons and is removed - that is not the way galleries work here. I guess it could do with some more "neutralising" and I'll maybe drop a note on the admin board to see if anyone else has views (I see it was deleted last year as "out of scope" for example) but I see there is a legit en wp page. --Herby talk thyme 15:23, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The awkward ones are why we're paid so much for our work here. Seriously, if they were all cut and dried, it wouldn't be interesting. BTW, I'm not ignoring your comment about an RfA, just thinking. . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 11:34, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Wait till you see the admin payslip...:) Otherwise - agreed! Think it through - bear in mind you do have to put up with junk too but frankly it is easily to deal with some of the maintenance issues with the extra buttons. I'll certainly nominate you happily but bear in mind I've got to go get some lighthouse images in a couple of days time --Herby talk thyme 12:04, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of lighthouses, aren't you glad I talked you into uploading your latest quality image, File:Smeatons tower - Plymouth Hoe.jpg.
Again, seriously, if you'll nominate me, let's do it. If it takes your being around to shepherd it through, then it shouldn't happen. Thanks, . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talkcontribs) 13:02, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have a question[edit]

Herby, I uploaded a photo of one of the Ramones (punk rock band) and I gave it the name of the wrong band member. It is here as Joey Ramone dot jpg but should be Dee Dee Ramone. Is there any way you can fix the name? Those Wikipedia punk rocker editors are waaay to intense and territorial! Heeelp! :( --Leahtwosaints (talk) 02:43, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done but one of the name you wanted was already there so yours is called Dee Dee Ramone (2) & is here. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 08:25, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

Hello. Sorry to bother you but is there a list of less commonly used deletion templates, such as uploads that may contain malware somewhere? --Sandahl (talk) 15:41, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I sympathise :) One of the hardest things for me when I got here was how to find the templates and what to use! This is where to start. Tag anything odd with a speedy anyway but if you point me I'll delete (& probably take a close look at the user). I'm away for a bit shortly but here should get attention or one of the sub boards - most folk are quite friendly ;) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 15:52, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery locations[edit]

Created another user page at User:Nilfanion/Unidentified, listing the ones that I can't locate precisely enough for my liking as I come across them. I realise it will take a minor miracle to geolocate File:A Dartmoor Mother And Youngster.jpg more precisely than "Dartmoor", but we can try.

Of more immediate concern (to you) are File:Dartmoor pony 1.jpg, File:Dartmoor pony 2.jpg and File:Drystone walling 2.jpg. The pony ones have dodgy {{Location}} tags. I guessed it was on the E side of Hameldon (hence the Widecombe tag), but that's a guess. As for the wall, I don't have a clue! :)--Nilfanion (talk) 19:57, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think Mila did the locations for the pony pics (to satisfy the VI requirements), and as she was guessing obviously got it a bit wrong. Some of the others should be doable, particularly if additional detective work is done. Eg File:Devon England stream and cottage.png is from Flickr, and was taken 4 minutes before this and 16 min after this. The church indicates the approximate area, so I'm thinking that one can be located... (Incidentally the mystery pony snap I sent first time says on Flickr it was taken at Postbridge).--Nilfanion (talk) 10:48, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bait[edit]

I didn't expect this from you Nigel, but I won't take the bait. Lycaon (talk) 19:08, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I ceased to contribute to QI (with one exception) quite a while back and decided to assist again with the tools. The reason - my concern that the poor quality of some images going through devalued the significance of the "seal" (FP & particularly VI are fairly mad for different reasons). I have a batch of images I will upload soon that - regardless of my views on their quality - will not appear there.
Generally I'd like to think my editing had remained pretty even handed over the years and I would accept that that comments was made in irritation and was wrong.
So - my question to you.
Given your standard as a photographer (far higher than mine) and your concerns on quality - the standard you set for others is beyond high - how can you feel it is acceptable to put an out of focus image in the QI and protest when people point it out? Personally when an unfixable issue is pointed out to me I withdraw the image. Your answer will interest me (& maybe others who have found your standards for yourself different from those for others). --Herby talk thyme 08:16, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can you point out where I protested? Lycaon (talk) 09:28, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Once again I am wrong in this case. However the fact that you see it as acceptable to leave an out of focus image in QI does not set a good example to others about the standards for such images. You set a very high standard for other people's images (most of your edits on such pages show that clearly) - why should these standards not be applied in exactly the same way by you to to your work? --Herby talk thyme 09:54, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cornish pics[edit]

Ok :)

Info on the mine works: Its the Towanroath engine house at Wheal Coates mine. I have some pics of same area in late August when the heathland was in full bloom, so will be interesting contrast if I ever get round to it! Billy Richardson[edit]

I viewed the Project scope and feel this page fits within Wikipedia's guidelines:

Deen-e-Ilahi Collection Deletion[edit]

Hi, I'm just messaging to inquire regarding how the picture mentioned above is 'out of scope'. - MFI Media/Correspond 19:30, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Let's put it the other way around - what makes you think that a collection of books - the same title in various languages - on a table with barely one of the covers readable is actually educational material?
I can see it is promotional but not educational. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 07:59, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I, personally don't think that the covers aren't readable. The book on the left hand-side (most-prominent) is very much readable, and the reason I put it up was not promote anything or anyone, but to show that the book is printed in different languages and sizes, and this is to let anyone reading the article know that they have many options. I don't think its really promoting either the book, the writer or the distributor anyhow. Above all, it seems educational to me. - MFI Media/Correspond 00:00, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
To me it is not educational but promotional of your point of view. Feel free to request undeletion. --Herby talk thyme 07:36, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think its promotional. Because, the reason for which I uploaded it was to just depict that the book has different versions. I've seen quite a few images on Wikipedia which have images as such. If it is about the clarity of the image, then it's not much of a problem, as there are more images on the web. I'm sorry, but how do can I request undeletion? I'm not quite sure about how to. - MFI Media/Correspond 21:38, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bear in mind that the fact that other things exist is not a rationale for anything on any wiki. The page you want is here. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 12:50, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User removes warning from talk page. What to do?[edit]

85Raditia has uploaded many images as "own work" or "edited on my computer" when they were actually taken from other sites. He or she has at least twice claimed

"This picture take by my own camera"

when in one case it was very unlikely and in the other case provably not true. I left a message warning that this was not acceptable, which he has removed, see [the comparison here].

Do we have a policy on removing warnings from your own talk page? If not, should we? While they are always accessible from the history, it is very useful for admins and others to be able to see a user's history in one place on the talk page.

I am inclined to put the warning back and strengthen it, but thought I'd ask your advice first. Thanks,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 11:20, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good one - obvious serial copyvio uploader.
Talk page warnings - as with most things on Commons no policy! My policy is that they should stay if they are ignoring warnings so that anyone else following it up can see the history as you say. So put the message back would be my idea and slep an "end copyvios" template on (which is a "I will block you next" warning too). In this case skipping the warning and blocking for 24hours/3days wouldn't bother me - i doubt it will change the behaviour much either way. Let me know if I can help - cheers --Herby talk thyme 15:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Done (no block). It's nice when my beginners intuition is similar to the old pro's thoughts. Now we'll see.

Little help[edit]

Hi! I often moving images from the Serbian and the English Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons. I mainly use CommonsHelper. Even though I am administrator on the Serbian Wikipedia , I am a little confused with a licenses here. I read a few instructions, but my English is not excellent, and also the instructions are not so understandable. I like to do things well, so the other people don't have to clean after me. In addition, people often ask me for advice, because they are confused with the same thing. So I would be grateful if you could explain to me this. When I transfer the image with {{GFDL}} license, which license should I put here? Just {{cc-by-3.0}} or some dual licence? The same question applies to the following licenses: {{GFDL-self}}, {{GFDL-user}}, {{GFDL-user-w}}, and pictures with dual licence on Wikipedia ({{GFDL}} and {{cc-by-3.0}}). CommonsHelper don't do this things, so I have to manually fix the licenses. For example: this and this picture, and also this picture (these are just examples). Thanks in advance. All the best! mickiτ 16:43, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to say that I totally respect your time so you do not have to answer me immediately. Pictures will not escape anywhere. I often get the same questions again and again, so I know how it can be tiresome to constantly answer the same questions. mickiτ 08:01, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Real apologies - I have a pile of stuff on at the moment. I've never used CommonsHelper I'm afraid so I'm not sure I can be as much help as some others can be. Try the help board or another admin if you want anything in the next few days. Sorry --Herby talk thyme 19:49, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed and blocked. I'm not sure about some of the remaining uploads either but not enough time to check now. I away for a few days but if you need help the admin board is a good place to ask. Regards --Herby talk thyme 08:02, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

photo help[edit]

Hi, You left a message regarding the photos I have tried to upload. I am not too sure where I am going wrong with the license tags. I thought it would be simple to say that I own these photos and can put them up, releasing them into the public domain and helping with various articles on Wikipedia. The last photo I uploaded I copied the tags that someone else had applied to their photo, as I couldn't understand what went wrong the last time, and this still seems to get them 'up for deletion'. Some help would be appreciated, thanks.

Sorry - I haven't noticed this detail. Thanks for correcting. Can those original edits outside my userspace be removed ? Wmigda (talk) 16:19, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Problem[edit]

Still don't quite get what is going wrong with the uploading of my pictures. The photos I upload seem to get deleted before I have a chance to say anything, but then it seems confirming that I am the copyright holder is not enough. I have not ignored the messages about 'commons policies & copyright violations' as each time they say there is something wrong with the license, violating my own copyright (?), so I try to use another or exactly the same license as someone else has used to put up pictures taken by themselves, but still they are deleted. It would be good to know if someone else is claiming copyright ownership of the images I upload and what other grounds you think my images are violating my own copyright, if that is possible? There is no EXIF data with print film but thank you for saying how professional they look. I take it I'll have to provide a 'Declaration of consent' for each picture I try to upload whereas those not taking professional looking photos don't? I will try again.

A bit of help?[edit]

Since my last... 10 or so FPCs have failed miserably much to my surprise, could you take a look at this and let me know if you think it has any chance in the world of not failing? I'm quite fond of it, but FPC are a tough crowd. Thanks, as always. –Juliancolton | Talk 22:55, 5 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well firstly I don't participate in that area at all now. Too many folk with frankly daft views :(.
I like the image but I have doubts it will make it to FP. It might benefit from cropping a little (a bit off the foreground and a bit off the sky just to tighten it). Pity you didn't get the angle so that the top of the child's head was just clear of the land across the lake - a little space there would have made the image of the child clearer.
The only way you will find out tho is put it in :). Hope it goes well - regards --Herby talk thyme 10:35, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
