World Cup Map

Kosovo is recognized by FIFA as belonging to Serbia still, so it should not be included in its own right on the map.

Request

Greetings.

Turkey and Northern Cyprus have abolished daylight saving and are permanently fixed on en:UTC+3 (en:Further-eastern European Time). (Also Crimea has not been updated in some of these files which is also permanently fixed on UTC+3.) See the news and sources. Can you change these files accordingly?

Update for the File:Standard time zones of the world.svg

Hello.

Could you update the File:Standard time zones of the world.svg by taking the changes in Crimea, Abkhazia, South Ossetia, North Korea, Turkey and Northern Cyprus into account, by copying the latest updates from the File:Standard World Time Zones.png? I requested this because I don't know how to create and upload SVG files myself.

Update hungary on individual taxation system png

This article is from 2012, and I had already added it as a reference in international taxation. As the references explain, Hungary adopts citizenship-based taxation in principle but grants two very broad exceptions: it doesn't tax foreign income of its nonresident citizens who also have another nationality or who reside in a country that has a tax treaty with Hungary. The overwhelming majority of nonresident Hungarians satisfy one of these exceptions. There are also other countries that tax based on citizenship in limited situations, as listed in international taxation, but these situations are so rare that it would be misleading to mark them in pink on the map, as opposed to the countries that really impose citizenship-based taxation without exceptions. Nice map

Hey just wanted to say I like the improvements you made to File:Blank USA, w territories.svg... I think it's a lot better with the territories moved closer to their true locations. A few other changes you made improved the map as well so I'm glad that you did that. One thing I wanted to mention is that whatever you were trying to say in the comment for Puerto Rico got cut off, but it doesn't affect how the map is displayed so I don't know if it's worth bothering to correct. Also, I went ahead and uploaded a stripped-down version (no territories) to File:Blank US Map (states only).svg since your map fixes a few of that map's flaws. I'm glad you like it! Thanks for finding the mistake in the comment for Puerto Rico, it should have been just the first sentence as all its islands are shown. I corrected it. Are you referring to moving Alaska slightly to the left as you did on File:Blank USA, w territories.svg, or moving it even more to the left to cut off some of the archipelago islands? On the old version of File:Blank US Map (states only).svg Alaska was definitely more to the left, but the reason for that may be that the map didn't have enough resolution to show all the islands. I was just going to move Alaska slightly to incorporate the latest change you made to File:Blank USA, w territories.svg.--Jamesy0627144 (talk) 01:37, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

I meant slightly to the left, but a little more than in the map with territories. My thought is that since the Rat Islands and Near Islands are not drawn, there shouldn't be any blank space on the map corresponding to their location. In the map with territories, these islands are "covered" by the rectangle containing American Samoa. In the map with states only, there is more blank space, so the rest of Alaska should be pushed to the left as much as possible to make these non-drawn islands "outside" the map, but without cutting off the drawn Andreanof Islands. But this is a very minor detail and not really necessary, it's up to you. If you want to do it, use numbers 16.1 190 705 inside the rotate function for Alaska. Got it, thanks for clarifying. For the sake of simplicity though I went ahead and uploaded a new version of File:Blank US Map (states only).svg with the most recent change that you made to File:Blank USA, w territories.svg incorporated. Not only was this easier but I also find it slightly appealing to have stuff on the territory map and non-territory map in the exact same position. Really doesn't matter to me though; if you feel the need to adjust Alaska in the future please go ahead. • Heitordp, I didn't realize before that you gave me the new numbers in your post; I must've assumed those were the numbers that needed to be changed. Anyways, I went ahead and uploaded the states-only map as a new file (similar to how Kaldari did for the territories map) and used the new numbers for Alaska. Source of "World map configurable.svg"?

Did you make this map based on the CIA map directly, as you claimed in the "Source" field, or based on File:BlankMap-World.svg? I suggest you fix the "Source" field if the latter is the case here. Cherkash (talk) 03:30, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

I made it from the CIA map directly. File:BlankMap-World.svg was originally made from the map of 2005 and uses curves. I used the map of 2015 to incorporate some recent changes, and straight segments to reduce the file size. Heitordp (talk) 09:43, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Can you tell me which countries or political groupings like states you added stripes to? I want to verify that stripes are needed and if so to add the sources to the references, but if you have sources adding them would be appreciated. Anyway, thanks for adding to the file. @Manabimasu: I added stripes to all countries/territories/states that have notes in the tables of article abortion law. The main source is the UN source linked at the top of the first table, but some notes have their own sources. Heitordp (talk) 12:02, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

Hey, thx. Louisiana (LA) is not really within the margin of error in the poll table, but you show it purple on your map. Please change. I would also advise you to use a 1-month timeframe for polls on your map and then drop them and go back to 2016 election results. For example, there's a really old poll from AR from the beginning of the year, a clear outlier with Biden+2, when the 2016 result was almost Trump+30 in the state. No election expert or model has AR close. Therefore, please only use polls that are not older than 1 month and otherwise use the 2016 result in a state. I used the most recent poll for each state listed in the article. The most recent poll for Louisiana shows Trump 48%, Biden 42%, margin ±4%, so they overlap. The most recent poll for Arkansas is from June 2020 and shows Trump+2%.

I agree with your idea, but instead of a limit of 1 month, which would be a moving date and thus require daily updates, I was thinking of following the same approach as the map in the previous election, considering only polls since the fixed date of September 1. States with older polls would be in a dark color based on the previous election, as you suggest. What do you think? Also, I encourage you to try updating the map yourself, it's really not difficult as the states are all listed in the beginning of the file with one line per color. Hey, yes, Sept. 1 is ok. Could you then insert a mention on your map that polls older than that are not used ? PS: I don’t get the margin of error thing: If the 4% margin of error applies to both candidates in each direction, not just the margin between them in Louisiana, then other states like Michigan must also be purple on the map ! The margin is supposed to apply in both directions. I marked Michigan blue because I used the most recent poll at that time, which was outside the margin, but since then other polls have been added. It seems that using only the most recent poll requires many frequent changes, so I'll propose some different criteria for a more stable map. Hi, could you please update the map again ? There have been numerous new polls and many states are now within the margin of error, such as NV, MN, MO, WI, PA etc. - Question: how do you apply the criteria for colouring a state ? You said you use 2x the margin of error, so for example 2x 4.0 = 8%. If only one poll since September 1 is for example below that, is the state automatically grey ? Or do you use an average of all polls since September 1 ? I think using an average of ALL polls since September 1 would be better because it smooths out outliers. What do you think ? World Map

Hi there! I'm Canuckguy (I don't have a Commons account, just a Wikipedia one, and even then I rarely use it anymore), and I was taking a look at the World Map file that I helped create many years ago and I see that you've made some incredible changes (as well as catching some mistakes I didn't notice, like Uelen for example). I just want to say that I'm really pleased with the changes, I probably would have done something like them myself if I was better at svg - I'd even go so far as to say that you've done as much important work to the map than I did with the initial svg grouping, if not more so! I'm glad seeing someone who Wikipedias more than I do and is better with svg than I am to have a passion for this as well. European Single Market integration : Northern Ireland

Thank you for updating this map but I'm afraid it needs another small update: Northern Ireland has "access with exceptions" like EFTA but not as generous. It wouldn't be terrible to use the same colour and just extend the caption, but if you insist you could use a paler blue. (Whatever you do, don't use orange or green!). Thank you. Unfortunately the colour is just a bit too close to the one used for Ukraine. Can you distinguish them more?

I should mention that there is still a continuing debate at en.wiki on how best (or even whether) the status of NI should be shown, since the politicians have made it deliberately vague. Glentamara is working on the same problem and the last thing we want is to offer editors a choice of map according to their political perspective. I'm beginning to appreciate why this aspect of the withdrawal agreement was so difficult to negotiate! Hi! I think the pink color looks good. Other colors might work as well, but it should be clearly distinguishable from the color for the EFTA/EEA states. The situation for NI is very different from the EEA states Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein since the latters are really integrated in the single market (with some exceptions, like for agricultural goods), which is not the case for NI. On the other hand, NI has a much closer relationship than Turkey or Ukraine, since it has access for agricultural as well as other goods. For more detail, see enwikipedia:European Single Market#But we have to reflect it somehow, but it is volatile situation - we have yet to see in writing the result of the negotiations just a couple of weeks ago on implementing the WA. Green would have gotten us back into the football colours problem again. Strangely, when displayed full size there is no problem to distinguish between the colours so it must be some kind of optical effect? Maybe you could increase the red element a bit more?

Abortion map Update (India)

@Addie293: The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 2020 did not legalize abortion on request.[2] It only increased the gestational period during which abortion is allowed depending on the circumstances, and expanded abortion for failure of contraception also for unmarried women. But the law still requires a doctor's opinion that the abortion is done to prevent harm to physical or mental health of the woman or fetal abnormality. The interpretation of mental health is very broad and includes circumstances such as failure of contraception or rape, but for example abortion based on the sex of the fetus is not allowed. So India should remain shown in the same category as the UK, which allows abortion for broad reasons but not merely on request. Heitordp (talk) 04:30, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

I agree with you so some extend but in that case, a lot of other countries can be categorised in the same way such as France (where I am from) as it requires the opinion of one doctor up to 12 weeks while it requires the opinion of two doctors thereafter. I honestly don't see that much of a difference between abortion laws in India and several European countries to be honest. And fetal sex determination by itself is banned in India because of an imbalanced sex ratio.

Up to 12 weeks, French law doesn't require the opinion of a doctor, it says that the woman has the right to request an abortion for any reason.[3] Only after 12 weeks it's necessary for the doctors to make an opinion that the pregnancy poses a risk to her health or fetal impairment. I also prefer to follow the UN classification, which is used as the main source for the tables in the abortion law article and the map. The UN classifies India and the UK under social/economic reasons but not on request. But I agree that in practice the situation is almost the same in these countries, so maybe we should merge the categories social/economic (green) and on request (blue). Don't you (have to) add the program used to make the map?

I'm on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Visa_policy_of_the_Schengen_Area.svg and wanted to learn how to make such a world map showing a selection of maps. I kind of expected it would be some open source map engine already incorporated in the wikipedia, with a selection of types of frequently used types maps in the wikipedia. @SvenAERTS: I took this map in PDF, converted it to SVG, and opened the SVG file in Inkscape. Then for each country, I took the sequence of numbers representing the shape in Inkscape, reduced them to two decimals using a spreadsheet, and copied it back to Inkscape. After that, I adjusted the borders of all countries to match each other exactly. Then I started a blank SVG file in a text editor, manually typed a code to start the shape of each country, and copied the sequence of numbers from the other SVG file in Inkscape for the respective country. I also repeated the borders to allow coloring them separately, added circles for small jurisdictions, and added options to configure how various disputed areas and circles are shown. The result was this file, which I've been using as a template to create other maps. I also added instructions in the file for other people to use it.

It took a long time to create the template, but after it was finished it was pretty easy to create other maps from it. I just selected the options to configure the disputed areas and circles, added a few lines to color certain countries, and saved it as a new file. Heitordp (talk) 08:34, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

Since Mississippi's abortion trigger law went into effect yesterday that would ban nearly all abortions except in cases of rape or life of the mother, could you please change the color on Mississippi from Dark Blue (<17 weeks) to Brown (Risk to woman's life, to her health, or rape) on the map below? Transgender Medicaid Coverage Map Change Request

Hello,

Could you please update the Transgender Medicaid Coverage Map on WikiMedia Commons when you can? Since there are some state colors that need to be changed on the map since it hasn't been updated in a long time.

Along with the state colors that need to be changed below, I included some sources.

Alaska -- Explicitly includes health care coverage related to gender transition (Red to Blue) [1]

Delaware -- Explicitly includes health care coverage related to gender transition (Gray to Blue) [2]

@Squazyzilla: Instead of updating the file, I'll explain how you can do it yourself. First, download the file to your computer and open it with a text editor like Notepad. In the top section of the file there are two lines with codes representing the states:

#WA, #OR, #CA, #NV, #CO, #MT, #MN, #HI, #IL, #MI, #VT, #NY, #MA, #RI, #CT, #NJ, #MD, #DC, #PA, #IA, #NH, #WI, #ME {fill:#0000FF;}

#AK, #WY, #NE, #MO, #OH, #TN, #GA, #WV, #TX, #AZ {fill:#FF0016;}

The first line is for blue states, and the second line is for red states. Gray states are not listed in either line. For example, to change Alaska from red to blue, remove the code #AK, from the second line and add it to the first line; to change Delaware from gray to blue, add the code #DE, to the first line; to change Florida from gray to red, add the code #FL, to the second line; etc. Then save the file, go to the Commons page of the file, click on "Upload a new version of this file", and upload the file. File:World_DST.svg and File:World_time_zones.svg

Hello, I found the two time zone maps and Commons says, they would be under public domain. But because I consider to use these maps for own maps, I´m curious, what your sources are, because I can´t find another public domain map that shows the different daylight daving time rules in Mexico or the areas of Canada they have daylight saving time. And the map that is mentioned as a source (File:BlankMap-Equirectangular.svg) hasn´t that information (or I can´t see them). @Journalismusmädchen: BlankMap-Equirectangular.svg is only the source for the shapes of countries. The daylight saving time rules are obtained from a variety of sources. Comprehensive sources compiling the rules for every location are Time and Date and IANA Time Zone Database. In Mexico, all rules are specified by a single decree. In Canada the rules are specified by each location, but a compilation is available from the National Research Council and from an old but still mostly valid article on Canadian Geographic. Details are also available from governments of subdivisions such as Quebec. This map also has a very comprehensive and detailed list. @Yak mov: People pay taxes to the institution that actually governs the area where they live, regardless of international recognition. For example, people living in Transnistria pay taxes to the government of Transnistria, not of Moldova; people living in Crimea pay taxes to the government of Russia, not of Ukraine, etc. So in this map, I find it better to show the areas where each tax system exists in practice. I was wondering if you have a vector graphic version of this map, or another format that can be edited (Photoshop, GIMP, etc) and if you could give me access to it. The Bloomberg article and many others concluded incorrectly. The new law repeals the previous law on DST but it also says that the government can set rules for DST. The government clarified that the repeal of the previous law was simply to consolidate it into one new law, and that Greenland intends to continue observing DST as long as the EU does:

The first map seems to have been made from another file, probably SVG, and I don't have the original file to properly update it. It also needs some other updates and corrections to parts of Canada, Northern Cyprus and South Sudan. It's also an inconveniently large file. The second map also needs some other updates besides Egypt and Greenland. Since these maps are not used on any pages, I don't intend to update them. I keep these files updated: World DST.svg, DST Countries Map.png, DaylightSaving-World-Subdivisions.png.

However, it seems that the decision only invalidates the federal law prohibiting abortion, so abortion can be provided by federal health facilities located anywhere in the country, but the state laws prohibiting abortion remain in force, so abortion still cannot be provided there by state or private health facilities.[6] Due to this limitation, I think that the map should remain unchanged. @Aurelio de Sandoval: The article Abortion in Mexico does not say that abortion is decriminalized in all of Mexico. The Supreme Court decision of 2021 did not automatically invalidate the abortion laws of all Mexican states. The decision formed a precedent for other judges to follow and for people to request amparo, but people can still be prosecuted. And the Supreme Court decision of 2023 only invalidated the federal law, so abortion can be provided in federal facilities, but the state laws still prohibit it in other facilities. @Theklan: I have an SVG version that I use to update portions of the PNG version each time, but this SVG version by itself doesn't contain all updates, and its file size is huge. A huge SVG is better than trying to edit from another PNG, but if you can do it lighter, that also would be great. The one I have uploaded is 14,25 MB, but the PNG that Commons make is way lighter, and still we have the option to edit the SVG. @Theklan: You can see my current draft here.

I need to fix a few bugs and add the remaining labels. After it's finished, you can use it to make maps of each time zone by simply changing the color codes defined at the top of the file with a text editor. I recommend not saving the file with Inkscape because it disrupts this structure and adds a lot of unnecessary code.

I suggest that you wait until I finish this file, because it will make your task much easier. Also, the template that you have been using needs many updates, so I recommend not making more maps based on it.

I should also say that maintaining maps of individual time zones requires updating all 40 files every few months when some part of the world changes its time zone or DST. I find it too much effort for little benefit. Heitordp (talk) 03:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

@Theklan: I finally finished my SVG version of the map, here. I made several changes compared to the CIA map, such as adding stripes for areas that observe DST, and using intermediate colors instead of stripes for areas that observe half hour offsets. To make maps of each time zone, you can simply change the color codes of each time zone at the top of the file with a text editor. The file has less than 1 MB. Abortion map Aguascalientes

The local congress finally made the required changes to the local penal code, and abortion is not longer a crime (technically) before 12 weeks (after implantation, like the rest of Mexico). It should not have any framework (as suggested by the Supreme Court), but the legislators didn't comply with that.

Map Request

Hi again! I am working on a project related to Brazilian states and I need a map that is very detailed in the borders like yours is but at the same time one that uses the lambert projection instead of the mercator projection (the one you used) which ensures equal area of the states (I attached a link below of a less detailed one to show you) is there any way you can make 1 blank location map of the Brazilian states using this projection? If not it's totally fine I'd just thought I would ask.

@Aimmella12: The current location map of Brazilian states uses the equirectangular projection, which is not equal-area but it doesn't distort as much as Mercator. For example, Malta and Thailand also tax foreign income of residents only if it's remitted there, and they are also shown in dark blue. Question Regarding the World Time Zones map

I've been poking around with you world time zone map, and I've been unable to figure out how you chose the intermediate colors. Do you use a program for it, or do you just sorta eyeball it?

I chose the intermediate colors by eye, within the range of RGB values between the other two colors but not exactly in the middle. The middle values don't always give the best contrast or keep the same brightness, because the human eye is not equally sensitive to the 3 RGB components.

The green sliver in southeast Alaska is the town of Hyder, which uses the same time as the neighboring part of Canada (UTC-8, DST UTC-7). Heitordp (talk) 00:55, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

World Time Zones Map and the EEZ

As I was looking at the map, a thought occurred to me that it normally isn't the case that you change time immediately after you step off of land , so to speak. Time zones normally are effective acrosboth a a given regioandnd the EEZ associated with it, not only on land. I was wondering if it would be feasible to at some point update the World Time Zone map to at least in part reflect EEZ lines instead of only land borders? @Adioscorea: Time zone boundaries on water are arbitrary, they don't follow EEZs either. Ships just choose whatever time they prefer, and different ships in the same location may even use different times. For example, a ship traveling between two points on the UK coast in the English Channel may use UTC during the whole trip, even if it passes through the French EEZ, while a ship between two points on the French coast may use UTC+1 even if it passes through the UK EEZ.

In this SVG version of the map, I left a space between time zone boundaries and all coasts. It's not EEZ but I think it's better than in the PNG version, where some boundaries were right on the coasts. Heitordp (talk) 13:53, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

This time zone map has always been de facto. Before my edit on 2023-04-23, the map already showed Crimea, Donbas, Abkhazia and South Ossetia in UTC+3. My edit at that time was only to change the more recently occupied regions of Ukraine to UTC+3, because these regions also started observing it.

This issue has already been discussed several times (1, 2, 3, 4, 5), and each time the result was to keep these regions in UTC+3, because the map is de facto. Note that the map does not support the annexation, because it still shows these regions as part of Ukraine, with the border between Russia and Ukraine as internationally recognized (white line on the map). Only their time zone is different, like other countries with more than one time zone.

Thanks for mentioning UTC+7. Its boundary should indeed be adjusted, but not according to the nine-dash line, because China and Taiwan don't actually administer all those islands. The boundary should be according to which countries administer which islands, as shown here. I'll try to include this adjustment the next time I update the map. Kanye West's color

@TheOffShoot: There were too many minor candidates in that election, so some colors had to be repeated, although with different shades. Kanye West's color was just chosen randomly. Heitordp (talk) 20:19, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
